Thirty eight

Where did I even begin? "I don't know what to do, Sam. We got married because it would protect Bennett." I paced in an abandoned parking lot. "But after what happened with... him, I'm not interested in being anyone's wife."

"He just sprang it on you?"

"Yeah, pretty much. I had to let Elijah hold Bennett, and that's a whole other can of worms." My hands still shook from the whole Dahlia encounter. How the fuck had that happened? And Marcel was working with her. "The biggest thing, is that his psycho aunt is making me help her. If she's anything like Freya described I don't want her anywhere near my kids or Hope."

"Is there any way around helping? Could you just tell Klaus?"

"If I do that, I expose Marcel, and Klaus doesn't take kindly to betrayals." They'd just gotten over their little macho show down too. "Telling Klaus is a horrible idea, not telling him, is also a horrible idea."

"Why don't we send Cas? You could let him hold Bennett while you figure everything out. It'll take at least one thing off your plate."

"I don't want him to be in danger because I'm caught in a rock and a hard place." It would be easier to fulfill Dahlia's wishes if I had somewhere safe for Bennett to be.

Angel wings fluttered, and I wasn't alone in the parking lot anymore.

"What did I just say?"

"He'll stay in the corner."

"Yeah or he'll get murdered." I wouldn't put it past Klaus to figure out how to kill Castiel.

The angel blinked at me.

"Cas, go home."

"No."

"Let him stay. He's going to protect you. It'll make us feel better."

He was just standing there, and it would be nice to have someone I genuinely trusted with me. "Fine."

"Dean and I have been researching. We're working on making both Bobby's and Jody's houses safer than even the bunker. Just so you have somewhere safe to run to."

"Shut up." I stopped. "You did not."

If Klaus found out...

Given the circumstances though, I was grateful.

"I know, I know, you don't think it's a good idea."

"No, you idiot, you're a genius. Thank you, by the way. My timeframe is a week, so take from that what you will."

"We'll be ready." Dean answered and for the first time in a while, I felt like maybe I could do this, for Bennett, and myself. Neither of us deserved to live in a house like the Mikaelson's.

Not with their level of danger and Klaus' temper.

"I love you guys."

"We love you too. Now, go seduce that bastard so we can get you out of there."

Klaus and Dahlia had their plans, but so did the Winchesters.

They hung up, and I refrained from celebrating. "Cas, we can so do this." I was practically beaming.

He stepped forward, eyes on Bennett, and I realized he hadn't seen him for a while, long before the Mikaelsons had caught up to me at the bunker.

"Do you want to hold him?"

Castiel nodded.

"He's less fragile than the last time you held him. Don't worry so much about holding his neck, and focus more on holding him close to your chest, like this." I demonstrated before unhooking the carrier. Castiel awkwardly did as told, and Bennett immediately reached for his tie, already intrigued by it.

Though I did stand nearby, just in case he needed help, Castiel was actually pretty good at holding Bennett steady.

"Such a small creature. Is it normal he seems to have grown twice his size?"

"Completely. His growth spurts won't slow down for a good long while, and he's not twice the size, he's very average for a five, almost six month old." I reached out, running my hand though my son's hair, he had the most adorable soft curls. They were blonde at first, but it was starting to darken. "You know this is going to be incredibly dangerous right? We're facing Originals. This isn't like the hunts you've been on with the boys, I have to trick Klaus Mikaelson." And I only made it more difficult by swearing off sex with him yesterday. "If something happens to me, I need you to swear that you'll take Bennett to one of the safe houses. Leave me behind."

Castiel's head tilted. "I understand."

"I don't want him being raised by the Mikaelsons and I definitely don't want him in some kind of pack." If this all went to hell, he had to be as far away as possible. "And thank you, for coming, I know you've probably got better things you could be doing."

"I do not. My friend needs help, so I came to do so." He swayed side to side slowly. "I won't leave you behind, Maverick."

If only he knew how much that meant to me.
