Fourteen
The Bunker.
It was an underground system. Had tunnels I hadn't explored yet, one my son would probably enjoy.
If he was ever going to be fucking born. I still had a month left.
When was this kid gonna be done baking?
I adjusted the blanket on his crib, it was all ready, had been for a while, in the room next to mine, the boys helped me put it together.
Nearly nothing was new, most was either stolen or thrifted, and the rocking chair smelled like an old folks home, but I loved every inch of this place.
His nursery.
Holy shit I was gonna have a kid.
A perfect little one.
No one could take him from me, I'd ensured it. As soon as he was born, I had a bracelet that'd fit his tiny little wrist. It was made of the same stuff my necklace was made out of, and it would protect him from his father's side of the family.
The metal was enchanted to grow with him and as long as he wore it, he'd be safe.
We'd be safe, for the first time in nearly a decade, I wouldn't have to worry.
Gods, I felt so tired.
My powers were dulled by the magic that pregnancy, but I still heard the clang of our metal door, and the steps of two hunters who didn't need to be careful of their volume.
They were back.
I took one last second to take it all in before closing the door quietly and making my way toward the kitchen where grocery bags spilled across the countertop.
Sam wasn't there, maybe he'd gone to his room?
"I take it the hunt was successful."
"We even got one of those blood suckers in the trunk. He's gonna tell us where his nest is." Dean grinned, grabbing a box of frozen food out of a bag and throwing it in the freezer. "He had a werewolf buddy though." He looked up, watching for my reaction.
"I'm not connected to every werewolf we meet." I couldn't help but roll my eyes. "We have separate packs, you know. Most of us can't tolerate the others. That's why we have disputes over territory."
"It's still weird."
"And part of our nature. Wolves hunt in groups, that's why the three of us make such a great team."
Dean's face screwed up. "Don't compare us to werewolves."
"Whatever."
He put the last of the food away and tucked the bags into an already overflowing stash. "You gonna help us with interrogation or what?"
"I thought I was benched?" My brow rose.
"Not for controlled environments like the bunker. It's the outside situations that has us worried, you're so focused on protecting your stomach, you're not defending yourself."
"I got hurt like one time." He gave me a look. "Okay but I healed-"
"Your healing isn't working like it should, you said so."
"I don't know how it all works, Dean. This is my first pregnancy, and I didn't exactly have role models growing up."
"Still benched."
"You're no fun."
"I'm trying to keep you and your kid alive. This ain't about having fun."
I crossed my arms. "I do appreciate everything you guys have done." More than he fucking knew. The wards on this place helped hide us.
This was just a different kind of trapped.
I could go into town whenever I wanted, and I'd taken to going on little walks outside the bunker, just enjoying the sun.
"Wait." I paused. "Did you say a werewolf was buddies with a vampire?" It wasn't a very common occurrence.
Dean shrugged. "Vampire said if we didn't kill the wolf, he'd tell us where the nest was, and only if it kept them both alive. We're gonna kill them as soon as we know what we want to know."
"Classy."
"Not all supernaturals are like you. Some of them kill for fun."
"And some of them do it for their survival."
He frowned.
"What, you thought the supernatural was disconnected? By the time a hunter rolls into town and starts slaughtering a nest, every wolf, witch, or vampire is out of the general vicinity until they're gone. That's why you bozos only find one pack or nest per town."
In the community at large we were at one another's throats, but any kind of supernatural helped with humans.
They were the worst of the worst sometimes.
"So they just leave those others to die?"
I crossed my arms. "They earned their death by being stupid. If you're gonna drain a bastard, at least stage the body. Vampires are the dumbest species."
He blinked. "Why didn't you tell us there was some kind of warning system?"
"Because it defeats the purpose of the warning system." Idiot.
"Hey. Sorry to interrupt..." Sam stood in the doorway. "But we've got a problem."
"What is it?"
The younger of the two glanced at me. "It's the vampire, says he knows Maverick. He heard her talking."
I felt the blood drain out of my face. There were only a handful of vampires I knew well enough for them to recognize my voice.
There was no way they caught an Original, much less one that cared about a wolf.
No way they'd be that stupid.
Though I wouldn't put it past the Winchesters to try.
"Alright, let's go see this fucker."
