Forty three

"No fucking way. You're the wife." A human by the smell of it, leaned on our table. She clearly had more than a few drinks.

"Excuse me?"

She giggled. "You're married to the hot one right? The one in the suit?"

"Gods, no."

Marcel put a hand over his mouth, obviously trying to hide his amusement and not doing a very good job of it.

"Who are you?" I eyed the girl. She was dressed to party. I'd wager she was celebrating her twenty first birthday.

"Evelyn Fontaine."

Fontaine. I knew that from somewhere. "Your dad wouldn't happen to be Eddie Fontaine, would he?"

"The leader of the human faction?" Marcel leaned forward in interest.

"That's my dad." She slurred, slumping slightly. "Can you believe he was scared I'd get eaten by a vampire."

"Can't say it's that ridiculous a notion." Marcel shrugged. "Though given your father's status, it would be against the treaty to attack you."

Evelyn blinked slowly. "Does that mean I'll have your protection, handsome?"

I snorted.

Marcel rolled his eyes. "Where are your friends?"

She pouted. "They left me."

"Maybe we should walk you home." He stood.

Evelyn opened her mouth to protest, but puked instead. I barely moved out of the way in time.

"Get her home, I'll deal with this mess." Hopefully they had some rags behind the bar. "Then we can meet back here."

Marcel's eyes narrowed at me suspiciously.

"I'm not trying to escape. I'll even be sitting at this table when you get back." I didn't want to make the employees clean this shit up. "Just go, the faster you do, the faster you'll get back."

"I swear to god, if you're not here..."

"Yeah, yeah, I know. You'll hunt me down. I got it."

"You'll call me if anyone shows up, right?"

"Yes."

Marcel was apparently satisfied, because he took Evelyn's arm, gently guiding her toward the exit.

I moved to the bar, flagging down a worker. "Hey can I get some paper towels? Someone just puked over near my table."

Eyes were on me. I could feel them.

"We can get someone to clean that up." The bartender offered.

"No, it's alright. I can do it." I was having flashbacks to when all four of the kids had a stomach bug. There was so much vomit. "Just give me what I need."

They shrugged, handing me a roll of paper towels.

I gave them a smile, and walked back to the table, avoiding the puddle. It was already starting to smell. I tore off a wad of paper towel, and began cleaning the mess.

Gods, I hated my wolf senses sometimes.

I was well aware when someone crouched down beside me.

Please be Klaus, please be Klaus, please be Klaus.

"How noble."

"Lucien. What a surprise." Oddly enough, I was kind of relieved. At least it wasn't Mikael. "You know, the Mikaelsons weren't very pleased when you snuck away."

"I'm shocked." He muttered sarcastically.

"Are you going to help or are you just going to hover?"

"I'll hover, thank you."

I tore off another wad. "Why have you come out of hiding?"

"The last leg of my plan." Lucien brushed some hair behind my ear. "I want you to know that I did genuinely enjoy our time together."

"Oh, so it wasn't to get back at Klaus for something he did in the past?"

"Not all of it."

"Comforting." I deadpanned in turn. "So what? You're going to use me again?"

"This part isn't going to be fun for you."

"Can it wait until I'm done cleaning this up?"

"Unfortunately, dear, it can't. I have a very short window before you're surrounded by Mikaelsons. Luckily for me, they're quite distracted at the moment or you would've been stolen away already."

"You've been watching."

"Indeed. Now, would you rather walk out of here with dignity or do I have to drag you? Need I remind you that I am much older, and thus far stronger."

I let out a huff. "Dignity, I guess. Though I'm fully placing the blame on you for making me break my promise to Marcel."

"Shall we?" Lucien stood, offering his hand.

Didn't have a choice, did I? I allowed him to pull me to my feet. "I'm not walking toward certain death, am I?"
