LONGING TO BELONG / PETER

You hadn't ever experienced pain like the way you did when Peter broke up with you. It was gut wrenching, and it felt indefinite. Like there was no end to it.
No matter how hard you tried, your mind always wandered back to boy that stole a piece of your heart and hadn't the decency to return it.

You first met Peter at a coffee shop; and yeah, it was cliché that you met there, but that's where your moment happened. His bashfulness immediately attracted you.
Peter was shy and reserved. He was apprehensive. And you loved that about him.

When Peter broke up with you, your eyes were puffy and swollen; and it hurt to touch them. You were broken—the epitome of the word.
You felt defeated and rundown, not only because he was the only boy you had ever loved, but because you embarrassed yourself.
You had put yourself out there admitting that you loved Peter. Everyone knew it. From all of your classmates to your neighbors.
You were a fool for loving him. You knew it, and so did everyone else. You had been warned by your friends that he was always caught up in school, that he wouldn't have any time for you—but you couldn't bring yourself to believe that.
Peter was always so nice to you. Always so loving.
Until he broke up with you for someone who, when you were dating, was just his friend—Liz Allan.

Everything crumbled upon itself the day you asked him what was wrong.
Peter, being reserved, had replied with a "Nothing."
You didn't want to assume the worst, but when your boyfriend had been ignoring you—not speaking to you. Skipping the classes you had together so that he wouldn't have to see you, he was not being a boyfriend.
Peter had begun to treat your relationship as if you were acquaintances.
Your heart hurt. You held Peter's face in your hands for the first time in weeks and silently begged him to talk to you, "Peter, please don't lie to me."
He pulled away quickly.
"Peter... please, you've been gone emotionally for days, you don't bother to text me....to let me know what was going on."
Peter had quickly regained himself and shook his head, "I....I'm not lying to you. I didn't want to leave. I didn't want to leave y—"
You cut him off before he could lamely finish, "No Peter. No. You don't get to parade back in here talking about how you've done nothing wrong. It makes no sense"
You stopped talking for a second, you let out a shaky breath you didn't know you had been holding in.
Remorsefully, you continued, "Peter? Can yo— can you just please talk to me? What's happening?"

You hated to be that girl. The one who made assumptions about their relationship, but it had been so long since Peter seemed to care about you. He stopped putting effort into your relationship, and you had a hunch as to why it was happening.
