Disappointment

Peter Parker is the purest human being on earth.

He is kind, helpful, smart and overall just a really happy kid.

Even though he had been through many tough times, he still manages to almost always have a smile on his face.

Well... except for today.

But let's start from the beginning...

{•••}

It was just a normal night. Peter was helping Steve clean up after dinner. Steve washed the dishes while Peter dried them. They were just talking about normal hero stuff.

"So are you going out tonight Peter?" Steve asked. Peter nodded.
"Yea, I didn't go out yet today so I figured I should leave after we're done here."

Steve nodded.
"You go ahead Pete, I'll finish up here."
Peter smiled widely.
"Thanks Uncle Steve!" He said and ran off.

He ran to his room and grabbed his phone. He had a few texts from Ned.
Guy in the chair: hey Peter!
Spidey: hey Ned! What's up?
Guy in the chair: nothin much dude, what are you up to
Spidey: just about to go on patrol.
Guy in the chair: okay have fun and don't die!
Spidey: thanks Ned. I'll do my best.

Peter clicked off his phone and shoved it in his suit pocket. He grabbed his mask and walked out to the common room. He saw most of the avengers lounging around. They turned and looked back when they saw him.

"Hi Peter." Natasha smiled. Peter smiled back.
"Hey Aunt Tasha."
Tony stood up and walked over to Peter. He looked at him sternly in the Dad way.

"Peter, I want you home by 11 tonight. It's 9 right now so that'll give you 2 hours of spidermanning." Tony said. Peter rolled his eyes and nodded.

"Okay. I'm gonna go now, bye everybody!" Peter said cheerfully. He left out the window and everyone smiled at how happy the young hero always was.

Peter swing around, looking for crime.
"Hey Karen, anything going on?" Peter asked. His AI responded.
"Hello Peter, there is a bank robbery just east of you."

Peter changed direction and swung over to the bank.
"Okay Karen, give me details." Peter asked.
"It appears that there are three men with guns, and five hostages. Police have surrounded the building but are unable to enter due to the hostages." She replied.

Peter took a deep breath and swung down. He burst through the door and smirked when all three criminals were shocked to see him.

"What? Did you really think you could rob a bank in my city without me noticing?" Peter asked. The gunmen growled and pointed their weapons at the hostages.

"Take one step Spiderman, and we'll kill them all." The biggest goon said with a thick accent. Peter rolled his eyes.
"Blah blah blah." He said sarcastically.

The robbers glared at him and tried to pull the trigger. Before they could, a web grenade sent them all flying to the back wall in the bank.

Peter rushed over to free the hostages.
"There ya go!" He said happily as he helped them all get outside. Everyone thanked him and he swung off.

He stopped a few more attempted robberies and even a few muggings. He was sitting on top of a rooftop.

"Hey Karen, what time is is?" Peter asked.
"It is 10:57." She replied. Peter was so shocked he almost fell off the building.

"Shoot! I gotta get back otherwise the team will kill me!" Peter exclaimed. He started swinging back to the tower, but stopped when he saw smoke close by.

"Karen?" Peter asked. Karen knew what he was asking.
"It's a fire at the local orphanage. Most children are still trapped inside. If you go you will be extremely late for curfew, but if you don't the children might die." She said grimly.

Peter quickly made up his mind. He swung over to the orphanage to see it completely engulfed in flames. He saw what was left of the sign laying on the ground.

"Mrs. Danielle's Orphanage."

Peter felt a sad tinge in his heart. This was the orphanage he was at for five years before Tony came and adopted him. This made him all the more set on saving these kids.

He ran over to the firemen.
"How many in there?" Peter asked. The fireman looked worried.
"At least 20. Most of them are trapped on the top floor by collapsed support beams." He explained.

Peter nodded and ran into the fiery building. He swung himself up carefully to the top floor.
"Hey! Where are you!" He shouted. He heard the muffled screams of small children and he ran to their voices.

He ignored the burns he was getting and shoved two large beams out of the way, sending sparks everywhere. A few kids screamed and the rest looked paralyzed in fear.

"Alright everybody. I'm gonna need you all to hold on to me okay? I'm gonna get you out of here." Peter said. The kids nodded and he scooped them up.

A few of them were dangling from his arms and neck, but he didn't care. He needed to get these kids out of here. He reached a window and shot a web on one of the kids.

"Okay I'm gonna lower you down alright?" Peter said. The young boy nodded. He had tears streaming down his face just like the other kids. Peter felt awful for these poor children who had to suffer through something so traumatic at such a young age.

Peter lowered down the first boy and he was grabbed by a paramedic. Peter repeated this 18 times before exiting the building himself.

The owner of the orphanage came over and counted the kids. She gasped and turned to Spiderman.

"Tom! Tom's not here!" She panicked. Peter looked at the building, it was about to collapse at any moment and he had already been here way too long. But he couldn't let that kid die.

"Where would he be?" Peter asked.
"In the main level bedrooms!" She said. Peter ran back into the building but stopped when he saw that his only exit was just covered by the whole front end of the building collapsing in.

Peter turned back around and ran through the fiery mess. He knew he was probably very hurt, but he needed to just get this last kid out. Before it was too late.

"Tom! Tom! Call out to me buddy!" Peter yelled. He heard small whimpers coming from the room to his left.

He ran in just before the doorway collapsed. He scooped Tom up into his arms.
"Don't worry buddy, it's gonna be okay."

Tom started having a coughing fit. It was from all the smoke he inhaled. If he inhaled any more he would die. Peter looked around but saw no exit.

Peter looked at the petrified boy in his arms that reminded him a lot of himself. Then he looked around at the room. There was a weak point in the walls he could probably break through. But he needed to stop Tom from inhaling all the smoke.

"Alright Tom, you're gonna wear my mask okay buddy? It'll help you breathe." Peter said. Tom nodded and Peter pulled off his mask. He slipped it onto Tom's head and he stopped coughing.

"Th-thank you." Tom said in a quiet voice. Peter nodded but then started coughing. The downside to giving up his mask, was that now he was inhaling all this smoke. Even with his powers, he couldn't handle much of this.

"Alright Tom, you need to hold on tight because I'm going to break through this wall." Peter said. Tom nodded and held on tightly to Peter's chest. Peter shielded Tom with his arms and ran through the wall.

Peter screamed in pain, but kept running thorough the fire. Tom was protected from the flames, but Peter most definitely was not. When they got to the entrance, Peter put his mask back on and ran through the wall of collapsed wood.

As soon as he ran out the whole building collapsed, sending him flying forward. Peter held on tightly to Tom as he smashed into the ground hard.

Peter slowly got up and took Tom over to the medics.
He- *cough*- he inhaled a lot of smoke." Peter said. He was coughing violently from the smoke now instead of Tom.

Suddenly he was wrapped in a tight hug by Mrs. Danielle with tears streaming down her face.
"Thank you Spiderman. Thank you so much." She cried. Peter nodded and swung off.

He was in so much pain and agony. He knew most of his suit was burnt onto his skin. All of a sudden Karen alerted him with even worse news.

"Peter, you are two hours late for curfew." She said. Peter sighed. He was surprised his dad hadn't sent out a search party yet.

He came in through the window and saw the the living room was completely dark. He didn't know why but all he could see was the outlines of his family.

(The lights were off so Peter couldn't see the avengers crying after they were so worried which means they also don't see how injured Peter is.)

"Peter." Tony said in a deadly tone. Peter hadn't heard this tone since he said hello Spiderman at the ferry.

"Dad, please, let me explain." Peter said. He coughed.
"You must have some good explanation for being two hours late." Tony hissed.

Peter sighed.
"There was a fire, and I wanted to help-" he started but Tony cut him off.

"Let me stop you right there kid, you know there are firemen that handle this sort of thing? I told you to be back by 11 and you completely disobeyed me. I'm so disappointed in you Peter." Tony said.

Peter's blood began to boil. He had never gotten angry in front of the avengers before. Boy were they in for a treat.

"You're disappointed, in me?" Peter asked coldly. He heard a few people shift in their seats from the harshness in his tone.

"You heard me." Tony said back. Peter tried to contain his anger but it was too much.

"20 kids! 20 kids were trapped in that fire with no way out. Tell me how's a fireman supposed to solve that?" Peter began.

"Peter-" Tony started but Peter cut him off angrily.

"No, don't Peter me. The orphanage that was on fire, Yea that was the orphanage I spent five years of my life in. I watched as my first home burned to the ground with young kids still inside. Do you really think I would just walk away from that because it's above an avenger 'pay-grade'? Sorry but I'm not IronMan. I help the little people. Those kids would have died if I didn't do anything. 19. I saved 19 of them. I ran out and was ready to take off and come back home, but then I realized that one kid was still trapped. He was slowly dying and so yes I chose to save his life, instead of trying to make curfew. We got trapped inside for, god knows how long, and the poor kid, Tom, was inhaling so much smoke. I gave him my mask so he could breathe. I ran through solid walls of wood and fire to save this kid. So I'm sorry if that makes me such a disappointment, Tony."

Peter said every single word with pure anger dripping from his voice. No one spoke as they were in too much shock. Peter was panting and then fell into another violent coughing fit.

When he stopped, the lights suddenly came on. Everyone gasped when they saw him. He had multiple burns everywhere and his suit was torn and burnt to shreds. His fade was black with ash and his eyes bloodshot from the smoke.

Peter looked at the avengers to see that they had all been crying. Even Natasha. She was the first to run over to Peter and help him.

"Come on, I'll patch you up." She said shakily. Tony made the move to come with, but a death glare from Nat made him change his mind.

They silently went down to the med bay. Peter hissed as he sat down on a bed. Natasha began cutting away his suit. Peter hissed in pain with every strip of fabric that peeled off his burnt skin.

It was an agonizing 30 minutes before Natasha was finally finished cutting away the suit and wrapping up all his burns. She grabbed a washcloth and gently removed the ash from his face. He had also been breathing into an oxygen machine to rid his lungs of all the smoke.

When she was done, they sat there for a minute before Nat spoke up.
"You know he's proud of you right?" She said. Peter scoffed.
"He was just so worried about you. You're all he's got." She said. Peter lowered his head.

"I'm sorry for snapping." He said. Natasha shook her head.
"No. Do not apologize for that. We've never seen you mad, and honestly even I was terrified. Tony deserved what he got."

Peter gave her a small sad smile.
"They can come down now if they want." Peter said. Nat nodded.
"Friday get the team down here." She said.

In less than a minute the whole avengers team ran through the med bay doors.
"Oh Peter thank goodness you're alright!" Steve exclaimed. Peter smiled slightly.

"Oh man kid, remind me to never get on your bad side." Clint whistled. Nat glared at him.

"Kid, I'm sorry for what I said. I completely deserved what you said." Tony apologized. Peter nodded.
"So you're not disappointed?" He asked.

Tony rolled his eyes.
"No! God no, kid. I just saw the news and what you did was incredible. I guarantee none of us would have the guts to run into a burning building as fast as you."

Peter smiled and chuckled a little, but then hissed in pain.
"We should let you rest Pete." Natasha said. Peter nodded.

"I love you kid." Tony said. Peter smiled.
"I love you too dad."

Woah this was so long! Almost 2500 words! I hope this was okay I kind of just wrote it off the top of my head. I didn't really have much of a plan for this other than Peter getting angry for the first time. Also we reached 30K!!! Thanks so much everyone!
