Crash
Please read before continuing!:
This is like an adaptation of what happened to me. This is basically just me typing out exactly what happened when I was 7 except changing the characters. This is who represents who:
Peter=Me
Tony and Steve=My parents (Tony acts as my mom and Steve acts as my dad)
Ned=My friend
Ned's mom (Sandra)=My friends mom
{•••}
It was the middle of February. The 7 year old Peter Stark and Ned Leeds played on the same sports team together. Tony, Steve and Peter drove over to Leeds home since they were going to follow one another to the arena.
"Ready for your game today Pete?" Tony asked the excited boy.
"Yea! I'm gonna score lots of goals!" Peter announced proudly.
"Just do your best Peter and we'll be proud." Steve smiled.
They pulled into the driveway and saw Ned and his mom standing by their car waiting. Ned waved at his best friend and Peter waved back. Everyone got out of the car and Tony and Steve talked with Sandra, while Peter and Ned talked about their game.
"Alright Pete, hop in the car okay?" Tony said to Peter.
"Can I ride with Ned! Please dad!" Peter begged. Tony looked at Steve who looked at Sandra.
"It's fine with me if you'd like to come with us Peter." She smiled. Peter and Ned cheered as they hopped into Sandra's light blue van. Her van had no snow tires, something uncommon for the winter weather.
Tony walked over and buckled Peter into the seat.
"Can I take my shoes off dad?" Peter asked. He was wearing little running shoes.
"Sure Peter." Tony said. Peter kicked off his shoes and they fell to the floor. Tony shut his son's door and walked over to Steve.
"I'll follow you two if that's alright?" Sandra suggested. Tony and Steve nodded and got into their suv. They pulled out of the driveway first with Sandra following right behind them.
"It's gonna be about a 45 minute drive boys." Sandra said to the two chatting kids in the back. Ned sat behind his mother's seat, while Peter sat behind the passenger side.
"You guys might want to take a nap so you have energy." She suggested. Peter and Ned nodded since they were actually fairly sleepy.
It took Peter only a few moments to doze off to sleep, with Ned dozing off shortly after. They were driving down a long country road. Sandra didn't happen to see it, but there was a thick layer of black ice on the road.
The car began to slide and Sandra panicked, pressing down on the breaks. The van spun around and around into the opposite lane she was screaming, Ned was screaming and Peter was screaming. The van collided with another car, before crashing into the snowy ditch.
Peter's POV during the crash
I woke up to screaming. I looked out the window and saw blurs flying by. I was terrified so I screamed too.
I felt myself jerk forward and got a sharp pain in my stomach from the seatbelt. Something flew up and hit me in the head. I felt dizzy and scared, but the spinning stopped.
I looked over at Ned who was sobbing. Half of his face was covered in blood, the other half covered in tears. I soon realized that Ned was crying blood. Ned seemed scared when he saw me too. We both cried and cried while we waited for help to arrive.
My whole head felt fuzzy. I remember crying and crying, until I saw my dad running up to me with Steve shortly behind.
Third Person POV
Tony and Steve were driving in front of the van the whole way. When they saw the van spin out of control and go into the ditch, they pulled over and ran out of their suv.
"I'll check them. You go make sure the guy in the car they hit is okay." Tony said. Steve ran over to check on the man in the car Sandra collided with. Tony was about to start running, when he saw Peter's little shoe laying in the middle of the road.
But he wouldn't believe his son was dead. He couldn't believe it. He knew he was still alive, he felt it. He ran faster than ever before to the van.
Tony arrived at the sight of the destroyed van. He gasped when he saw the wreckage. All the doors had come off due to impact, and there was parts of the car everywhere.
He ran over to where Peter was and was relived when he saw that both boys and Sandra were still alive and safely attached to the seats. He saw Peter and Ned crying.
He checked Peter over for any major injuries to which he had none that he could see. When he was sure his son was okay he ran over to help Ned. He had a fairly big gash in his head so Tony took off his scarf and pressed it to the boys head.
Tony looked over to Peter, who was as pale as a ghost and had the most expressionless face on.
"Hi dad."
"Hi Peter." Tony said worriedly. He wasn't so sure if Peter was alright but he just needed to wait for paramedics to arrive.
"Hi dad." Peter repeated.
"Hi Peter. Are you alright?" Tony asked even more worried.
"Hi dad." Peter said again.
When Tony was sure the two boys were okay, he went to check on Sandra. She was out of the car walking around and on the phone with someone. Her husband, Tony assumed. She must have been in shock because she was rambling.
"H-Hi honey, I-I need new glasses be-because mine broke. Okay. I need- I need new glasses." She rambled. Tony snatched the phone from her.
"Sandra! Your son and my son are hurt in that car. Steve called 911, and ambulances are on their way. You need to come help me with the boys." Tony said as he held onto Sandra.
The shock melted from Sandra's face. She nodded and they walked back over to the van. Paramedics had just started showing up. Their were two ambulances, a fire truck and two cop cars.
The firemen helped lift the kids onto two gurneys. Ned and his mom were sent to the closest hospital in an ambulance separate from Peter. Peter was in the ambulance with the other man from the car. The man was fine, paramedics just insisted on taking him to the hospital.
Tony was in the ambulance with his son, holding onto his hand. Steve had to drive to the hospital since there wasn't enough room. Peter had a respiratory mask on to give him more oxygen.
There was a paramedic standing over Peter and checking him out for injuries. After a few minutes he removed the mask and spoke to Peter.
"Can you tell me your name?" He asked.
"Peter." Peter responded weakly. Tony squeezed his sons hand and smiled at him.
"Good. Now can you tell me where you were going?" The paramedic asked.
Peter thought for a minute before answering.
"Umm... to my game." He answered. Tony smiled again.
"And do you know what day it is?" He asked.
"Umm February 12." Peter responded.
The paramedic nodded and explained to Peter what they were going to do.
"Alright. So I just checked you out to make sure you didn't have any memory issues which is good. Now we're gonna take you to the closest hospital and get a doctor to check you out alright?"
Peter nodded as much as he could. The ambulance pulled into the emergency station a few minutes later and Peter was taken to a room.
The doctor came in and checked Peter out. Steve had also arrived and was in the room with Peter and Tony.
"Alright, so he's good to go home now." The doctor said. Tony looked confused.
"Are you sure? My son was just in an accident and he looks so pale."
"Yes I'm sure." The doctor said as he left the room.
The drive back home was a complete blur. Peter had no idea what was going on as he was so out of it. Tony and Steve were worried sick about how pale and expressionless Peter was.
"Hey Pete, do you want to get some dinner?" Tony asked since it was around 8:00. Peter nodded and they pulled into a nearby McDonalds.
When they had gotten home, Steve left to go and pick up Peter's things from the wreckage scene. Tony and Peter were sitting on the couch when all of a sudden Peter stood up and ran down the hallway, trying to reach the bathroom.
He didn't make it and threw up all over the floor. When Tony heard, he ran down the hall and cleaned Peter up. He looked down at the puke and saw blood in it. That wasn't good.
He scooped Peter up and took him in his own car to the hospital. He then contacted Steve to let him know what was going on. They arrived at their hometown hospital, and Peter was taken in right away due to his condition.
Tony was explaining to the doctor the earlier events.
"He was in a bad accident this afternoon. He was taken to a nearby hospital but they just sent him home. We stopped for some food, but he threw it up and there was blood."
The doctor looked at Peter and back at Tony.
"Alright I'm going to run an IV, and see what tests I can do alright?" The doctor said. Tony nodded and thanked the doctor.
A few hours had passed and Peter was fast asleep. Tony and Steve were sitting beside their son, waiting for the doctor to return.
The doctor walked in at around 1 am. He looked really stressed, which worried Tony and Steve.
"Can I speak with you out here?" The doctor asked. Tony and Steve stepped out of the room and closed the curtain.
"What's wrong?" Tony asked nervously.
"Well, that's the problem. I'm not sure. I'm so sorry but I don't know how to check a boy that small. I want to send him to Sick Kids Hospital." The doctor explained.
Steve and Tony looked worried.
"How are you going to get him there?" They asked.
"We are going to take him by air ambulance, a helicopter. Unfortunately, only one of you can go with him. The other will have to drive down." The doctor added.
Tony and Steve decided that Tony would go in the helicopter with Peter. Some paramedics showed up and woke up Peter.
"Hey there, we're gonna go for a ride okay?" One of them said to try and calm Peter down. Peter looked confused.
"Around the hospital?" Peter said groggily. The doctors had also given him a bit of medicine for the pain he was in.
"No buddy. We're gonna go in a helicopter." Tony said.
The paramedics removed his IV and gave him a portable one. Peter hated needles and he had already been given so many. The paramedics put him on a gurney and into the ambulance where they drove over quickly to the small town airport.
They strapped Peter into the helicopter on his gurney and gave him and Tony a pair of headphones to block out the noise of the helicopter.
They took off and made their way over to the hospital. They passed the CN tower and the pilot tilted the helicopter over slightly for Peter to see the tower all lit up. It was beautiful.
They arrived at the hospital and Peter was rushed to a room where doctors checked him out. He looked over at Tony.
"Dad... I'm scared." He said quietly and shakily. Tony wanted to cry when he heard his boy say this, but he kept himself together.
"Don't worry Peter, it'll be okay." He said as he rubbed his boy's hair. He was taken down to the ICU (intensive care unit) and kept there for the night. Peter slept most of the time and watched cartoons on the small TV in the room.
A few people came to visit him but weren't allowed in the room with him. The next day, he went through tons and tons of tests. Blood work, CT scans, MRIs, dye scans, X-Rays and many more.
They sat in the ICU waiting for Peter's results. The doctor came back and talked to Steve and Tony.
"So it appears that when the crash happened, his seat belt jerked him in the stomach and caused a small bleed that healed itself. Thankfully we found no serious injuries that require surgery, but we did find an enlarged cell in the brain that we will scan every 5 years. I recommend he stay for a third night." The doctor smiled. Tony and Steve were relived.
Peter was moved from the ICU to a monitored room. He spent lots of time with the nurses. They played games with him and he even got to take one of the games home!
He was super happy when he got to leave. He felt better by the third day, so the doctors let him leave. They were reluctant however, because he would have nightmares about the crash and wake up screaming. He was afraid to go into a car but would eventually get over this fear.
As for Ned and Sharon, they were both alright. Ned had a small piece of glass in his eye, but it was easily removed with drops. Sharon had to go to physiotherapy for her back since it got strained in the accident. They both went home from the first hospital and didn't have to go back.
A few years had passed and Peter was back to normal. He still had to return to the hospital every five years, but other than that all memories of the crash were behind him.
Tony was so relieved when Peter's nightmares stopped and he could enter a car without starting to shake. There was still one thing though.
He could go in any vehicle except a van. To this day, Peter could not be inside of a van otherwise he would panic. But that situation was easily avoidable and Peter Stark would be okay.
Sorry for the rushed ending this was just getting really long. So all of this is true. I didn't make up one single detail. It felt good being able to write about this since it's something I overcame and I am so grateful that I did. Thank you all for reading.
