After meeting with Elliot I returned to the A.I.F. On my way back I saw a young man and a school girl walking close to my left. They walked in silence, casting furtive glances around them, as though they were afraid of being caught by someone.

"This is where I come to hide when I need to get away," the schoolgirl told the young man. I saw them nod, then they disappeared from my sight. Thinking back they seemed to be headed towards Elliot's house. I followed the path I had taken many times before then walked the short distance back to the factory.

I was surprised to see the door slightly ajar, swinging on its hinge in the wind. The next sign of trouble was the lack of guards on the premises. A sense of unease washed over me as I scanned the room for trouble. Another door had been left slightly open. The door where the rejects were held. I had left 5, with another sitting dead in the chair. When I returned there were only 4 waiting. My heart was racing, dreading the day the story is released.

I then decided to take a quick inventory of what AIs we currently had in stock and which ones still needed to be developed. These AIs will eventually be sent out in the thousands but for now, they are issued in trials across London. We have 50 of each type out at any one time and they are tested in a practical setting for a month or two. When this time is up the AIs are developed and put aside for proper use next year when we intend to have 1000 of each type.

MAI390 is the one that is missing. I knew they were self-aware when I did the preliminary tests. They must have realised what was happening and escaped.

How could I have been so stupid? I let a self-aware defect escape. The news stories will be dreadful.
