"Is Seyi my biological son?"
The sitting room mummed immediately. There was little or nothing to say after that. She slumped on one of the soft cream and crowned couch. Like she always do whenever he drops a bombshell since the boy was little.
She gently turned her tearful gaze at the flower vase and began to sob. Or sometimes hiss with her short heels on the black shining tiles. When he, Chief heard her sobs, he grunted and squeezed his face nonchalantly rather compassionately.
"I asked you a question! I... I never told you to cry!"
"You mean, after that question that questioned my faithfulness to you, I should smile?! You've got no sense David" she screeched in irritation and disgust.
Chief's fist clenched against his don't-get-old-fast staff tightly, digging his nails into his palm flesh. He held it so tight that he won't angrily crush it on his wife's head.
"Then why is that hell of a son not back by this ungodly hour" He roared, pointing to the exit door.
"You don't know probably he's stuck in the traffic or he's in danger right now. Or... Or he wants to spend the night somewhere else" she added lastly with an air of importance.
"Stuck in the traffic? In danger? He wants to spend the night somewhere else? Oh c'mon! Does what you're saying makes any sense to you. It..."
"It does! Chief. It does!! Because..."
A loud, rude bang on the door followed by crashing steps snatched the couple's attention as they were both jaw dropped to see Seyi, their only son dead drunk with such behaviour.
Recovering from the shock, Chief began to chuckle sarcastically. He turned to his wife who was visibly embarrassed by the out turn of things and smiled
"Truly, he was delayed by traffic... No! He was in danger. You must be telling the truth Yéwándé"
"He's our son! And we can't throw him away. We'll continue to endure him" she cried, scurrying to where he laid on the cold floor, laughing with himself.
"I forbid it!" He snapped back , his face red with anger. "You'll endure this..." He pointed at Seyi, who was watching his parent's hot exchange like a lost puppy. "Alone".
He hit his walking staff on the floor and turned to leave.
"Dad?" He called wearily. Still trying to carry his legs and arms which seemed heavy like a corpse.
"Why are you looking for me? Am I kid? Or am I those tiny legged ladies you chase after?" He laughed stupidly, his handsomely carved jaw tightening in amusement.
His father ran to hit the staff on his head but he was saved by his mother who ran into them, blocking him from scattering their son's brain.
Over angered and disgusted, Chief stormed out of the room to sleep. Yéwándé watched him leave while she held Seyi. She began to pull him up.
"Oluwaseyi! Why are you doing this to me?" She whimpered, feeling his cheek with her palm.
He gibberish some vain words then groaned painfully.
"Kafaya! Kafaya!!" She called the maid.
An average young lady in her early twenties appeared after. She jumped back when she saw an unconscious Seyi on the bare floor.
"Wetin happen to Oga?"
"Would you keep quiet!" Yéwándé scowled. "Let's take Seyi to his room".
They both pulled him up, holding him side by side to his room.
"Pẹlẹ oko mi"
His mum pet him till they reach his room entrance. He groaned again and turned his head to Kafaya
"Hey bitch! Come and sleep beside me"
"Eeh!" Kafaya blushed hard and hid her face childishly.
A cold rush of embarrassment ran down his mum's body and Kafaya scoffed.
"No. Goodnight baby" she said firmly, planting a kiss on his forehead. She then turned to the maid.
"Go to your room"
She slammed the door and left.
************
"Waky waky!"
From the series of sex, drinks and driving that occurred the previous night till he blacked out flashed through his brain following a murderous head pound that kept him groaning. Seyi flicked his eyes open to see a worried Yéwándé.
"Did you I disturb you honey?"
He chuckled and shook his head.
"Good morning mum"
"Good morning sweetheart"
Then he marvelled at how he disappeared from the hotel to his room.
"But wait! How did I get home yesterday?"
"You drunk drove yourself home. Your dad is still upset because your issue led to a serious exchange yesterday" she explained, finding herself a seat on the bed with him.
"Gosh!" He slapped his forehead with his palm.
"He wants to see you at his office this morning. That's what he instructed before leaving"
He hissed and pulled out of the sheets.
"I heard he's planning to retire soon"
Yéwándé was afraid to dive the matter so she ignored him. But he continued.
"So... Your husband must be serious about disowning me and handing over to a humble and honest fellow like he threatened"
He went into bathroom but she continued from the bathroom door. Seyi was perplexed about his mother insistence on convincing him that his father still possess love for him when they both knows he doesn't.
"It's not like that Seyi. He loves you. If he doesn't care about you he'd refuse you moving out of the house. He just wants the best for you"
"Hm!" He chuckled sadly. "Chief Akindele should be studied as a course in universities then"
What made Yéwándé more uncomfortable is the failure of Seyi not addressing his father as dad. She got defeated and decided to surrender.
"When you're done oko mi, meet me downstairs"
"Okay mum!" He called back with a voice that indicates he was brushing.
He finally completed his dressing. Black arrogance. His Louis Vuitton black shirt on a fitting black trouser. A diamond wristwatch and necklace. He ran his hands inside his soft curly hair. Then winked at his gorgeous self in the mirror.
"These girls will pant" he whispered and a devilish smirk crept to his lips, smoothing his hands on his fair, unblemished, spotless skin. His face then squeezed at his reflection.
"You gotta grow some beards Seyi. So that your old man will accord an accolade of respect" he touched his hairless chin to his jawline like that of a woman.
"Whatever" he groaned and left the room with his keys.
He stopped at the stairs when Kafaya blocked his way. The sheepish grin on her face confused the hell out of him.
"Oga... Good morning"
"Good morning"
The confusion frown on his face refused to disappear with her attitude.
"Oga... Should I come and sleep beside you this night? You said I should sleep with you yesterday but madam no gree"
"Me?? Sleep beside me? When?"
Then he remembered. He must have embarrassed himself longway with Kafaya and most especially, Chief.
Embarrassed and disgusted, he rushed the stairs down. Then his mind went to what she said again. He became enraged.
"Fuck you" he muttered under his breath.
