Chapter 5

Flamepaw was a little surprised when she saw the she-cat awake for the first time. She seemed curious and wanted to learn all about the clans even though she was a kittypet.

Flamepaw padded through the clan's tunnels to get food from the prey pile. I wonder how the kittypet is doing?

"Flamepaw!" a voice echoed, "Hey, Flamepaw!"

Flamepaw turned around to see Cedarpaw padding towards her.

"Flamepaw," Cedarpaw said again, "Do you mind getting some wet moss for the kittypet? She's extremely thirsty, though she won't admit it."

And very stubborn too. "Yeah, ok." Flamepaw answered, "But can I at least get some food?"

Cedarpaw seemed to notice the fresh-kill pile in the middle of the room. "Oh, right. Sorry"

Flamepaw nodded with a bemused expression and grabbed a plump mouse from the fresh-kill pile. She then turned around and asked her sister if she wanted to share. She agreed and sat down to eat.

"How's the kittypet?" Flamepaw asks after an awkward silence.

"She'll be alright. She didn't seem to surprised when I said there'll be scars."

"Where did she get clawed?"

"On her leg, torso, and her shoulders."

Flamepaw shivered when she pictured how the she-cat might've looked without the blood and poultice.

"She'll be alright," her sister said in a soothing tone, "She is a kittypet, but she's tough I'll tell you."

Finishing the mouse, Flamepaw stood up with the carcass and went outside to bury it. When she came back, she saw her mentor, Mothheart, waiting for her.

"Okay," she started, "Today we'll begin digging tunnels for food and learning a battle tactic underground."

"Okay!" Flamepaw chirped, "Can we start now?"

"Yes."

Flamepaw darted out of the tunnel excitedly and waited impatiently for Mothheart to pop out of the tunnel. When Mothheart finally came out, Flamepaw raced to the training area, only slowing down when she passed some moss, which was quite a lot.

What was about moss that I needed, Flamepaw asked herself every time she passed the moss, but she always shook the thought away and continued to the training tunnels.

"What are the rules to tunneling?" Mothheart asks once they reached the small clearing dotted with holes.

"Well," Flamepaw started hesitantly, "I think the first rule is don't tunnel alone, and the second rule is..."

"It is?" Mothheart asks.

"I think it's plan before you tunnel, or you'll go nowhere." Flamepaw finished.

"Good. What do you want to do, Flamepaw?"

"May I dig?" Flamepaw asked.

Mothheart nodded, "And I'll extract the extra dirt."

Ecstatic, Flamepaw darted down the hole and continued running in pitch black, only feeling using her whiskers until she stopped suddenly and started digging, creating a little pile for Mothheart to take back out.

Flamepaw didn't stop, even when her claws started to ache with overuse. The ginger tabby kept going until she heard her mentor call her. Flamepaw hesitated then turned around and trotted towards the shaded black she-cat.

Suddenly, she felt the tunnel shake and small chunks of dirt falling.

"Flamepaw!" Mothheart yowled seemingly quietly due to the distance.

The ginger tabby instantly started running through the tunnels, small pieces of dirt dropping on her head, until a large chunk of dirt fell in her way.

"Mothheart, help!" Flamepaw yowled as loudly as she could, "Mothheart! Can you help me?! Anyone, help!"
