Still shaking from her terrifying encounter in the forest, the girls listened to the man on the TV.
"Breaking news tonight as a local boy goes missing," the achor said, tossing to a reporter in the field. She had seen enough news broadcasts to know that stories like this always contained a grieving mother, begging for her child to return hom. Or a worried father, threatening anyone who might do harm to his child. But this was not most stories. Instead of a concerned parent being interviewed, the reporter stood with a stoic looking man in a suit who kept referring to the boy, not as 'my son', or 'my baby', but as The Subject.
Her heart sank as she realized the missing boy might be the same one who had been chasing her through the forest. She had only caught a glimpse of him, but something about him had seemed off, as if he were not quite human.
Her mind raced with questions. Was the boy really missing, or had he been taken by something else? And if he was the same figure from the forest, what did that mean for her safety?
Just as she was about to switch off the TV, the reporter interrupted his own broadcast with and update. Cupping his ear, he said, "We've just received word that a witness saw a figure matching the missing boy's description running into the woods near the the small town of Massacre Pines," he said.
The girl's heart raced as she realized that the danger was now even closer than she had feared. Had someone spotted her? And was the figure running after her... or to her? She switched off the TV, and the house sat silent. Mom and Dad were still at work and wouldn't be home for an hour. She was completely alone with only her thoughts. And those thoughts were racing. The image of the missing boy's strange, pale face stayed with her, haunting her every thought.
