Chapter 17: Attacco
The bakery smells wonderful, the very atmosphere warm and inviting. The smell of the freshly baked loaves wafts through the air, and Leonardo checks his pouch for the correct amount of florins.
Ezio looks over the options, and something catches Speranza's attention from the corner of her eye.
A piece of paper, with her face on it and "WANTED" in big bold letters, pasted to the wall. There's a reward of 5000 florins, dead or alive. She tenses, glancing around slowly at the other patrons.
She moves to the wall briskly and tears the paper down, throwing it to the side after crumpling it up.
"Ezio," she whispers, moving closer to him. "We've got to go."
"We just got here," he replies, just as quiet.
"I just tore down a wanted poster of me. People will start to notice me."
Ezio stiffens, looking towards Leonardo as he puts his loaf of bread into the basket on his arm.
"Leo," he says as they leave the bakery. "We have to leave or go into hiding."
"Why is that?" Leo asks, confused.
"Speranza just tore down a wanted poster. The Templar guards are looking for her."
"Oh."
Ezio begins noticing the papers now. They're everywhere, Speranza's cold glare staring at him through the drawing. It's her, but it's not her at the same time. She looks too evil in the drawing.
"Assassino!"
Speranza takes off into the crowds, and Ezio pulls Leo after them as they hear the footfalls of Templar guards following in their wake.
Leo begins to tire, and Ezio pulls to the side, ducking in between two buildings. Speranza leaps up onto the rooftops and disappears from their view.
The artist places his hands on his knees, catching his breath. Ezio stays perfectly still, although any normal person would be fidgeting nervously.
"Mio amico," Leo says. "You need to help her. I'll head home."
"Sì, I'll follow her."
They give each other a quick hug before Ezio takes off down the road, the guards long gone and the Venetians distracted.
