19. Fear Factor

I know Freddy, Jason, Chucky and IT aren't real... But murders are real, and I'm afraid!

So I'm a baby...

Someone enlighten me, what is the point of scary movies? The rush? The adrenaline? The boredom? The bragging rights to say after "that didn't scare me!"

These all could be a reason to watch a scary movie, but when someone says "I don't want to watch that because it's scary." Then the hate button is pressed and the judgment begins. That's its own kind of scary movie!

But.. it IS considered a scary movie for a reason, so isn't it natural to be scared of them... or is scary the new funny?

I get it, some people have dark humor, and maybe it's comical to watch someone get eaten by a T-Rex in the Jurassic Park movies. I mean dinosaurs are big and bad and have razor sharp claws....

But wait... Pause!

What makes a person getting eaten by a dino different than viewing someone get killed in a scary movie?

Well, I'm about to tell you!

Though when I was a child, I was literally scared of EVERYTHING, I can now say I like Jurassic Park (cause dinos are rad!) but as I got older I started to realize why I've adapted to watching and laughing at that kind of movie; Dinosaurs aren't real! (or not anymore)

I'm not going to wake up one day with a Stegosaurus breathing down on me, or take a selfie and have a T-Rex photobomb the picture! This makes the difference all more real and helps ease the mind in a more humorous direction.

But I'm rambling on about nothing. Back to the whole "scary movie" subject, you'll find that there are some scary movies that could fall under the "it's not real, so laugh!" category.

A perfect example is Resident Evil, (if that's considered a scary movie now) being that it's not only based off a game but has the bonus feature of containing non-realistic creatures. Not saying that it's lame to be terrified of these types of movies, but in this update I'm more focused on movies with more lifelike characteristics.

There are key elements that should cross out the whole "let's laugh at death" option out of people's brains, and I think they should be taken into consideration.

Take classic scary dude, Jason! This crazy man has died so many freaking times it's not even fun anymore, and it becomes super predictable that he's coming back from the dead. So what makes him so scary? The mask? The weapon choice? His invisible qualities to always come back from the dead to make more bucks in the theaters?

Nope! It's his drive for killing. Vengeance. Jason Voorhees wanted to avenge his mother from a terrible accident along with the people who hurt him... and isn't that will for blood something we see that in today's world? So is this story truly fiction? Could it be?

Let's take another oldie, and haunting classic. Freddy Krueger.

This guy gets you in your sleep, people! And might I remind you, we all have to sleep eventually? That already makes me shiver! Using a life necessity as a source of fear is ultimately going to get people's heads gearing and bring you a blockbuster hit, no doubt. But is the source of fear that Freddy uses the scary part about him? What is his motive? Does he want vengeance too?

To be honest, I was too scared to search for many details on this guy! He's been a nightmare for me for years (no pun intended!)

A clip I accidentally saw of the movie Nightmare on Elm Street is going to help me prove my next point;

As my friend held a phone in his hand and I glanced down at the screen out of pure curiosity, the burnt face with a black hat appeared. The boy in the room with him was screaming and hollering as Freddy approached him slowly. The kid was banging on the door and trying to open it but it was stuck, and he screamed for his parents to help him. The next thing I saw irked me more than anything. The parents were literally AT THE FRONT OF THE DOOR! They were there! Literally they were standing there not doing anything but watching the door. Freddy then clawed the kid against it, which sent three bloody gashes to the other side, and the parents horrified at the sight.

I don't know the full backstory of Freddy. Something about the ability to possess bodies too? If someone wants to enlighten me in the comments, feel free!

My guess was this poor kid was "dreaming" but not really?! I don't know, but witnessing that was enough for me to never want to watch that movie!

So what's his backstory? What does Freddy want? What I found out was that he also wanted revenge on the people who burnt his face. (but seriously dude, from what I read about you, you were a creep for luring kids with an ice cream truck and killing them..)

Oh, wait! Did my normally useless comments give away yet another answer? Unlike Jason (from what I know!) Freddy was a creep. He specifically killed children before the spark was set on his face (pun intended this time!)

So not only does this whacko have a revamped version of wolverine claws, drags himself into your dreams cause he has no life, and surely needs to borrow Jason's mask, he was more or less a pedophile.

And.... aren't those more relevant these days? Don't we, unfortunately, see those terrible cases more and more recurring on the news? So then what makes it okay to find a movie about it funny or enjoyable to watch?

"Because it's not real!"

Say that to the last child who was a victim of murder.... better yet, any murder. Did they think it was all fake?

Think about it, how do we know if a similar situation was done in real life before? How can you sit there and enjoy a movie when a person is literally screaming for dear life? I'm not saying "don't watch that movie!" but what I am saying is, be mindful of your reactions while watching something.

Let's discuss another set of thrilling movies that have a different spin on them.

What does IT, The Exorcist, and Chucky all have in common? Besides being absolutely disturbing!

Possession! And not just any sort of possession, but possession by the devil. (Yes, IT falls under this category because he is a demonic creature.)

Being possessed by the devil is real to some people because they know he's the creation of all evil and is powerful. So then why it is so great to watch on screen? What's the purpose of it? Why is a creepy, demonic clown cool? Why is Chucky everyone's favorite doll? And just because the Exorcist has old-school graphics doesn't make it NOT scary!

The purpose: Undefined. People just like to freak their socks off or see some kids bond together to stop a clown from eating people.

Right, so I'm going to get straight to the point here. The reason why a person is afraid of a scary movie is because in their minds, they find logic in it. And once there's logic, there's possibility which makes a mind run wild with belief that it's real or aspects of it are real.

For people who make fun of others who are scaredy cats, take a look at the world around us... do you think anything is funny now? Do you laugh or find joy in death? Is it something that may not make you laugh, but entertains you?  Would you watch someone be murdered in front of you and think it's okay?

For those who get scared, my only advice is to just stay away from all that! It's best to know your scare meter and adjust yourself accordingly. People are going to hate on you for your choices, but don't pay them any mind! You're saving yourself from being spooked and there's nothing wrong with staying clear of those sort of movies!

When in a pickle or the creepy crawly feelings start to soak in, Disney never fails! And I'll warn you, the only scares you need to worry about is credit at the end ;)

Yeah... that one wasn't funny.....

Thanks for reading, and I hope I didn't scare any of you too much! Comments are always welcome and so is sending me a star :) Got a burning idea that you would like me to discuss? Send it my way too. I'm always glad to help.

See ya later!
