#33 Final Countdown
(Vikk's POV)
"I've never been to the capital before", Mitch mumbles, looking around. "Me neither. Too risky", I reply. I'm wearing my blue sweater, Mitch having my cloak. He's too tall to be mistaken for me. Hopefully neither of us will be recognized. That's the last thing we need; royal guards coming for my head, or someone trying to turn Mitch in for a stack of cash.
The sun is just starting to set, and we've just created the hill in front of the capital. A small community surrounds the wall, and richer citizens and the castle were built inside. "We should get to the castle before sun down. They might not let us on after that", I explain to Mitch, nudging him forwards. "It's kinda weird to just walk in like this. I still don't know how we're going to explain this", Mitch sighs, starting to walk down the path. "All we have is the truth. Hopefully that's enough to at least get a search party going", I answer. We walk side by side, earning a few glances from the people still walking around. I'm sure that they see lots of interesting people heading into the city. We don't stand out from the general crowd as long as we don't show off our abilities.
I follow Mitch through several streets before we get to a giant gate. "Better let me do the talking", I mumble under my breath. Mitch only grunts and slows to let me in front of him. The armed guard at the gate is already watching us approach. I make sure to give him my most genuine smile. "Beautiful night, isn't it?", I greet him. The guard relaxes a little bit, resting the butt of his spear in the dirt. "Good night for the Queen's Moon festival. No clouds to cover the stars tonight. Is that where you two are heading?", he asks me. That's tonight? I've only heard of it on a few occasions. The Moon festival is a yearly holiday that the Queen created. I'm not sure why, though. "Yeah, we have some family inside the wall to visit. Even brought our little niece a new stuffed ocelot toy", Mitch buts in, seeming proud of himself. It is a good lie, I'll give him that.
"Have good night, then. Happy Moon festival", the guard nods, letting us through the gate. I feel bad deceiving people as nice as him. If we can get the King to listen to us, maybe I won't have to. I'm not sure if people like me could be accepted by the 'perfects', but I just don't want to be chased anymore. I could easily settle down and build my own home somewhere on the continent once the lab is off my back. It's strange to think that I might not have to hide in the shadows anymore. I could even go and live with Simon and the other five.
"Wow....." Mitch gasps. I look up, and I'm shocked by all the decorations around me. Banners and streamers are hung between the buildings in all the shades of blue and purple. Lit lanterns with star shaped holes light the streets. Mitch and I duck to the sides of the street jus a massive float moves past. It's a giant, paper-mache, crescent moon. The entire thing is pulled by a pair of black horses. Various groups of musicians line the streets, all playing the same song, but in different keys. You can see all the way to the castle from here. A long line of floats stretches across the long street.
"The King's probably at the front of the parade, we can catch him when he gets off!", I yell to Mitch. All noise makes it hard to hear anything. Mitch luckily understands what I said. He grabs my arm and starts working his way through the crowd, apologizing to anyone he bumps. We'll never get through like this! I look around, jerking Mitch over to a side alley. He makes a noise of confusions as I drag him onto the next street over. "Hang onto me!", I smirk. His face goes a little pale at that. I have to concentrate deeply, trying to block put the noise around me. It's been a few days since I last tried this. I can feel my energy draining, right before icy goosebumps break out on my skin. Mitch holds tightly to my arm as the world bends a distorts around us.
My feet land back on solid ground in an instant. The teleport worked! Mitch lets go of me then, shivering from the cold. "We should be right next to the castle now", I laugh. "I hate that! It's feels like I just fell into a frozen lake", Mitch growls at me. He leads the way this time, running down another alley with me on his heals. We burst back out into the street, just in time for the lead float to slow to a stop in front of us. Actually, it's not a float at all. A lush, golden carriage stands before us, a pair of white horses hooked up to it. "Um, Vikk? What's the games plan here?", Mitch nervously nudges me. I can't answer him before the carriage door swings open.
I'm frozen as a tall man steps down, already eyeing us with curiosity. He has kind, blue eyes and black hair. A crown sits on top of his head, and a long purple cloak hangs off his shoulders. A short woman with a similar crown steps out behind him. She has pale eyes and hair. The Prince steps out next, and he looks to be a few years older then us. He instantly gives me a feeling of deja vu. Mitch suddenly pulls me down with him. Wow, never thought that I'd have to kneel before anyone before. Kinda ticks me off.
"Your Majesty? We have something very urgent that we'd like to speak to you about", Mitch says, looking up at the King. "On the Moon Festival? I thought that I told all the generals to keep important business until tomorrow", the King raises an eyebrow at us. He thinks Mitch is a general? "No, we're not Generals. But we really need to-", I try to say, but I stop when movement catches me eyes. I lurch back, flicking my daggers into my hands. Mitch has drawn his sword almost at the same time as me. The GoldenEye Price unsheathes a longsword and moves in front of the King. But my attention isn't fixed on him.
Standing in front of the nearest float, uniform and all, is the person who started this all. I can remember his face smiling as he drew lines across my head. He sees Mitch and I, too. "To little, too late", he laughs, hitting a button on a remote in his hands. The float is instantly torn to shreds, releasing a horde of experiments into the plaza.
