#12 Race to Freedome
(Vikk's POV)
We all kick are feet on the water while Rob pulls it from underneath. I will literaly kill him if he swims off again. We all need to stick together. He really scared me when he left us. His glowing might get us caught, though. I'm actually surprise that we made it this far. Maybe the people here are just stupid.
Rob seems to know here to go, and leads all down the river a ways before coming to an area that widens out, with trees blocking us from view. Letting go of the log, I clumsily doggy paddle over to the shore. The other three follow, Rob being underwater still, Preston in his mouth. Ew.
Once my feet start hitting the sandy bottom, I pull myself up onto land and lay on the ground in a heap. We all pant heavily from our rapid swim. I notice Rob's still waist deep in the water, but I'm too tired to care at the moment. "Well, that was fun", Lachlan laughs. Jerome giggles from his spot on my other side. I can hear Mitch start to wake up and groan. "You ok, Biggums?", Jerome asks him. Mitch replies with a stream of noises before putting his thumb up. I laugh at him, all of soon laying together. "Are ya' goin to release Preston from his prison any time soon, Rob?", I ask him. His head turns towards my voice, and I feel bad that I forgot he can't see me.
"Are you all on the shore?", Rob asks. "Yep, all here and accounted for", Lachlan says. Jerome huffs before getting to his feet, stepping back into he water to help Rob. He stumbles over his own feet while trying to get out of the water. What did Lachlan say about Rob? That he wasn't ok!? Now I'm scared for him. Jerome halls Rob onto the shore where he instinctively half falls, half sits on the ground. His webbed spine, hands, and tail are quickly replaced by a blue hoodie. He then cups his hands before spitting out Preston.
"I'M ALIVE!", the tiny lava screeches. Most of his body is heated up to the point where we can see his lava skin shifting and moving. The rest of his body has regular skin. It's really cool how they made him, but I'm still glad to be away from that place. I shudder a little at the memory of needless going into my skin.
"You ok, Preston? I didn't hurt you did I?", Rob asks with a little fear in his voice. "Other then smelling your breath for he last twenty minutes, I'm fine", he mutters. "I think we better keep going before the bad guys figure out that we're gone", Mitch sighs before standing up. He sways a little bit, but quickly finds his balance. I get up with Lachlan soon following suit. Jerome pulls Rob with Preston still in his hands.
We all stand in a circle facing one another. "If we can find the road that I was brought here on, I can get us back to the nearest town", I offer. "It's the best idea I've heard all day! Let's go!", Lachlan cheers. "Race you!", Mitch shouts before tearing off into the trees. The rest of us quickly follow and chase after him. I frown when Lachlan jumps into the air and flies. Cheater. Mitch and Jerome are neck and neck, But I don't think Jerome is actually running full speed.
I stop running after hear a thump and yelp from beside me. "Rob, are you ok!?", I ask him. He lays sprawled on the ground, looking like he tripped over his own feet. He's starring at the ground in front of him and not answering my question. "Rob?", Lachlan asks, Lansing next to me with the other two walking up behind him.
"I think I just killed Preston", He mumbles, still staring at the spot on the ground. "WHAT!?", the rest of us shriek. "I-I tripped a-and I d-dropped h-him mad h-he just s-soaked into the g-ground!", Rob panics, tears starting to form in his eyes. We're all panicking at this point. Did Preston really just die!?
Just as Rob is about to start balling with Lachlan passing out, lava stats to bubble up from the dirt. Not like the little bit that Preston was made of, but at least ten times that amount. We all scramble back as to avoid getting burned. The lava quickly rises up and forms a shape standing up on two legs. We all stare as the lava cools and is replaced by skin and cloth. And then Preston is smiling wildly, now the same size as the rest of us.
"........ you guys all saw that too, right?", Mitch eventually asks. This sends us all into a fit of giggles. Preston must be able to move around through the ground and find lava sources to grow in size. There's still a lot to learn about our powers apparently. Preston pulls Rob up, being finally big enough to do so.
"Now let's get out of here. No one else disappear, ok?", Lachlan teases. This time we just walk instead of run. At least until we start to hear sirens go off. "RUN!", Mitch shrieks before dashing off into the trees. Jerome just picks up Rob to carry him so he doesn't trip. I yelp a little bit when a pair of hands slip underneath my arms and lift me off the ground. Preston and Mitch are good runners by themselves, but Jerome might have a bit of extra speed along with his strength. Neighs, barks and yelling is soon all around us. Mitch and Preston can't out run dogs! And we can't leave anyone behind either! I can feel Lachlan struggling to keep the fast pace with his clumsy wings, but he doesn't put me down. I'm partially thankful because I'm not a good runner, part worried that he's going to break a wing or something.
From the air, Lachlan and I can see that the trees are quickly ending. The road! It cuts the trees off right in front of us! We all burst out of the tress in one big dog pile. Lachlan's wings give out and he dropped us both right into the pile. My heart feels as if it's about to explode when the light of a lantern suddenly shine across us. It's too late to run with the carriage barreling towards us. I don't want to go back! I'm scared! It's not just me who's shaking at this point.
To my surprise and fear, an all too familiar vehicle grinds to a stop right in front of us. The carriage door flings open and just barely misses hitting Rob. "Get in!", the dark haired man yells, his sunglasses discarded on the floor. The ever trusting Lachlan tries to take a step forwards before I pul him back. "No! That's person who took me here! STAY AWAY!", I scream. A random branch flew and hit the side of the carriage in my rage. I pull Lachlan further away, Mitch and Jerome jumping back with Preston putting himself in front of Rob and grabbing his hand.
"P-Please trust me! I was forced to bring someone here, and I-I'm sorry! Just please come with me now", Danial begs. "I trust him", Lachlan decides, "and I really don't want to wait around for anyone else to get here". Everyone except Lachlan is still undecided, but an arrow shot from behind us makes up our minds. "Ok! In the car we go!", Preston shouts, trying to cool himself down enough to not burn the seats. Jerome opens the other door before we all pile in. Dogs run up just in time to get a face full of dust as the carriage lurches forward and speeds off. Horses pant and create a steady beat with their hooves. What have we gotten ourselves into?
