The Pianist
Lukas swiped a blond strand of hair out of his face as he quickly walked through the streets of his new home city. He had recently moved to Denmark after being chosen as a male principal dancer in the Royal Danish Ballet. Lukas had worked his entire life waiting for his chance to become a lead dancer, so when the RDB contacted him in hopes of recruiting him, he packed up all of his belongings and headed straight for Copenhagen. He had trained at the Norwegian National Ballet School but was denied the chance of being a principal dancer because the director of the ballet found him cold and emotionless. Lukas personally thought the Norwegian director hated him because Lukas was top of his class and beat the director's son at the Prix de Lausanne.
After being denied at the Norwegian National Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet immediately contacted him. Lukas was a prodigy, a ballet perfectionist in the purest form, so for any ballet company to not want him was a huge mistake. The RDB's "Sleeping Beauty" was only a few days away from starting rehearsal when Lukas got the call. It had been a few days after being rejected from his home country's ballet company when he picked up the phone and got the good news. He was going to be casted as Prince Florimund, the male lead.
He had been at practice all day and had gone home for dinner before deciding to head back to the theatre for some private practice. Though labelled perfect by the director and all other dancers in the company, Lukas believed he needed more practice. Making his way through the streets of Copenhagen, Lukas clutched his bag in his hands and slipped into the alley behind the theatre, knowing the front entrance would be closed. Using the key the director had given him, Lukas opened the door of the theatre and made his way to the changing rooms.
Lukas always found it relaxing to be in the theatre all by himself, so when he flicked the lights on in the empty changing room he sighed happily. Sitting down on one of the couches, he slipped his booties off to reveal his new pointe shoes. The company had given him a new pair last week and he was still breaking them in, so his feet were littered with blisters and calluses.
After changing into black tights and white t-shirt, Lukas made his way backstage, where he heard piano music playing from the stage. Heading into the surprisingly lit-up opera house, he realized the music was the same music one of his scenes in Sleeping Beauty. Someone must've accidentally left the music on when they left the theatre. Not in the mood to change the music, he decided to practice his part of the dance.
"Jete, arabesque" he whispered to himself as he did the moves. Lukas made sure to straighten his posture, point his toes, and close his ribs as he continued into his set of pirouettes, gracefully turning as the beautiful sounds from the piano reached his ears. Continuing his perfect solo, he felt the air around him move as if to make room for his swanlike elegance.
Lukas continued until he heard the music stop, frowning slightly when he noticed his feet were pointed an inch too far in the wrong direction. He had a perfect final position, but in his mind it was filled with flaws. After taking a practice bow, Lukas nearly screamed as he heard clapping coming from the audience. Glaring into the audience, he was slightly spooked when he didn't see anyone there. Who was clapping?
"Hello?" Lukas called out.
"Down here!" he heard a voice say. Lukas moved closer towards the front of the stage and peered over the side to notice a figure sitting at the piano. Looking down at the pianist with his mouth slightly opened in surprise, Lukas saw a man with wild blond hair and oceanic eyes sitting on the piano bench. The man looked up at him with a grin and continued to clap, causing Lukas to turn a bit red in the face. He didn't think anyone had been watching him. Lukas was incredibly embarrassed.
"You're a beautiful dancer." the stranger spoke, looking up at Lukas as if he were a rose in a patch of dandelions.
"Thank you. You're not so bad at piano." Lukas responded nervously, still a bit shaken up that he wasn't the only one in the theatre. He was terrified of strangers.
"I'm Mathias. And you are?" the man asked, his white teeth beaming us he looked up at the dancer on the stage. Lukas swallowed for a second, uncomfortable with the attractive man's stare.
"I-I should go." Lukas stammered, suddenly turning around and running off stage. Jogging across the hallway into the changing room, Lukas quickly slipped his booties on his feet, wrapped his jacket around his shoulders, and ran out of the building with his bag in hand.
Making sure to avoid the front entrance of the theatre, Lukas started making his way back to his apartment. He was shaking a bit, still a little nervous at the sly expression of the pianist. Lukas was very bad at spontaneous social interaction. He really hoped he didn't have to see Mathias again. He hated embarrassing himself in front of cute people.
"You're an idiot." Lukas whispered to himself, clenching his fists as he made his way through the dark streets. He was cursed with a lack of articulation. He usually let his dancing speak for him. Little did he know, his dancing could only get him so far.
Okay so this story is the second story in a set of pilots that I'm putting up on my account. I posted the other pilot a few days ago and people seemed to enjoy it so I decided to continue the trend of "1 chapter for a bit". If you haven't read the other story or have no idea what I'm talking about, the basic idea is that I'm releasing a few new stories as "pilots" where they only have one chapter and if people like them, I'll continue writing them as soon as summer break begins. Anyway, thank you for reading <3 Hope you enjoyed.
