Awkward

Lukas woke up from his nap to the sound of people talking and music playing. He sighed in exasperation as he slid off his bed and headed over to his closet. After slipping on a sweater and some black jeans, the Norwegian looked at himself in the mirror. He looked exhausted. His blonde hair was disheveled and his lips were pale and chapped. Reaching over to his dresser, he grabbed a brush, a cross clip, and some chapstick.

After brushing his hair and smoothing the chapstick over his lips he headed out of his room to the party. Heading into the living room, Lukas found himself sweating a bit at the amount of people in front of him. It looked like the entire ballet company was in his little living room. When Tino said he was inviting over a "couple people", he really meant everyone he liked. And he liked a lot of people.

Before he could even digest how many people were crammed into their apartment, one of the ballerinas he was friends with came bounding over to him, drink in hand.

"Lukas! This party is great! How are you doing?" the girl asked.

"I'm great Lily, thank you. How are you?" Lukas responded kindly. Lily was a girl from the tiny principality of Liechtenstein who won a huge ballet competition in the U.S. and was immediately recruited by the Danish ballet. Lukas became friends with her during his first week at the company when they were partnered together.

"I'm fantastic! I just wanted to say hi and also tell you that Tino wants you in the kitchen. Ttyl!" Lily exclaimed, giving a sweet smile before turning around and bouncing away. Lukas smiled at her liveliness and went to find Tino. As he entered the kitchen, he noticed Tino talking to a tall blond who Lukas assumed was the barista he had been talking about at the theatre.

"Lukas!" Tino shouted as he noticed the Norwegian approaching them. "Meet Berwald. He works at the Starbucks by the theatre."

"Nice to meet you, I'm Lukas." Lukas greeted, lifting his head to make eye contact with the intimidating blond towering above him. The Norwegian was pretty sure Berwald had made his chai tea before.

"Hi." Berwald responded, his voice a surprisingly low grumble. Lukas smiled awkwardly and looked back at Tino who was excitedly clenching his fists at the encounter. He was obviously very excited for them to meet.

"Well now that you guys are friends, I want to introduce Lukas to another friend of mine. So excuse us for one moment Berwald." Tino said excitedly, bouncing slightly as he grabbed Lukas's wrist and pulled him away.

"Where are you taking me?!" Lukas questioned, slightly worried as the Fin dragged him through a sea of people in their dining room.

"There's this super hot piano player who works in the orchestra that I want you to meet." Tino explained before coming to an abrupt halt. Lukas wasn't expecting the immediate stop and let out an "oof!" as his face hit the back of Tino's sweater. Lukas heard a few giggles and immediately straightened himself out. That was embarrassing.

"Lukas, meet Mathias." Tino suddenly said, gesturing towards a man in front of them. Lukas looked up at the man and let out a little gasp. It was the same man from that time at the theatre. That time when Lukas's anxiety kicked in and he embarrassed himself in front of possibly the most handsome man he had ever seen. That time.

"Ahh, so that's your name. Lukas." Mathias spoke, chuckling as he looked down at the red-faced Norwegian.

"Wait- have you two met each other before or something?" Tino questioned, looking back and forth between the Lukas and Mathias in confusion. Lukas's eyes immediately shot to the floor in embarrassment as Mathias let out a small laugh.

"I think I'm going to go get some air." Lukas muttered, turning and practically jogging out of the dining room and into the hallway. Not looking back in fear of looking like a total idiot, Lukas stormed out the apartment door, down the stairs, and onto the cool Copenhagen sidewalk.

Sitting down on a black bench outside the apartment complex, Lukas put his head in his hands. Why did he have to be cursed with awkwardness? Why did he have to ruin everything with his anxiety? He had embarrassed himself in front of the same man twice in one week. Mathias probably thought he was a total freak. Taking in a deep breath, Lukas shivered. It was pretty cold at night with the sea breeze, yet he would still rather face the cold than face Mathias again. As he drowned in his own thoughts, Lukas failed to notice the door of the apartment open.

"Do I give off bad vibes?" Lukas heard a familiar voice say from behind him. Looking up from the ground, Lukas noticed Mathias walking towards him with a slight frown. "Because you run away from me a lot and I'm starting to think I look scary or something."

"I'm so sorry about that." Lukas apologized embarrassedly, his heart pounding a little harder as the taller man sat down next to him on the bench.

"Usually people don't run away from me when I try to talk to them, but you're quite the runner." Mathias joked, smiling in an attempt to make the Norwegian feel better.

"Can we start over?" Lukas asked, looking into Mathias's eyes hopefully. The Norwegian desperately wanted their past two encounters to be forgotten.

"Let's." the Dane shot back.

"Hi, My name is Lukas and I am a very awkward human." Lukas joked, holding his hand out for Mathias to shake. The Dane giggled and shook his hand firmly.

"Hello, I'm Mathias and I'm sorry I scared you at the theatre last night." Mathias spoke, causing a laugh to escape from Lukas's mouth. The two smiled at each other for a moment before Lukas's face turned red again.

"I have social anxiety, which often causes hypersensitivity to overwhelming situations. And I know it's hard to explain, but that's what happened the two times I met you. So I just wanted to let you know I'm not crazy, it's just- yeah. Sorry." Lukas muttered, nervously tapping his index finger on his thigh as he revealed his biggest weakness to his new friend.

"I completely understand. You don't have to apologize. Not everyone can be as extroverted or bubbly as Tino is." Mathias reassured, his words completely comforting Lukas in a way he had never felt before. Mathias was surprisingly really cool. Usually people scoffed at him or told him to "just stop being so anxious all the time", but Mathias was understanding and comforting.

"We should probably head back to the party." Lukas suggested, gesturing towards the door as he looked over at the Dane.

"I actually think I'm going to head off. I've seen all the people I wanted to see. Tino promised me if I came to the party I'd meet a cute Norwegian. He wasn't wrong." Mathias spoke, giving a wink before standing up from the bench. "See you around, Lukas."

"B-bye." Lukas choked out quietly, his face burning hot as he watched the crazy-haired man walk away. After biting his lip to stop himself from screaming, Lukas looked down at vacant seat on the bench next to him. Noticing a slip of paper where Mathias had been seated, Lukas picked it up and turned it over, letting out a little gasp as he saw a number written on it. Examining it closer, Lukas noticed "Mathias Køhler" written in really sloppy letters. Lukas briefly smiled before slipping the piece of paper into his pocket and walking back into the apartment. He never knew being forced to go to a party in his own house would be so rewarding.
