CHAPTER FOURTEEN, cyrano

"Cyrano De Bergerac stands in the shadows, whispering poetry to the lovely Roxanne. But she thinks it's the good-looking guy speaking to her. So, our poor, big-nosed lug wins the heart of the woman he loves, but he wins it for somebody else." Jonathan Turner explained to the class about Cyrano.

"That is so sweet and so noble that he would sacrifice his own happiness to help his friend." Topanga smiled.

Jonathan glances at the rest of the class, outstretching his arms in question. "Other opinions?"

"Loser." Every boy in class responded with the same answer.

"Okay, define 'loser'." Jonathan said.

"Big dip." Shawn spoke.

"It makes no sense." Cory furrows his eyebrows. "I mean, he likes this girl, and then he passes her on to another guy."

Shawn nods. "Dip. The biggest."

"I think it's sweet he's helping out a friend." Gwen chimed in and some of the girls in the class nodded and voiced their words of agreement.

Jonathan sits on the edge of his desk, pointing at his niece and Topanga. "Gwen, Topanga, can you two refuse the dip theory?"

"Cyrano preforms a totally selfless act," Topanga started.

"And he does that for the sake of love." Gwen continued, sharing a smile with Topanga when the blonde glanced back at her with a smile.

Topanga looks back at the teacher, finishing her and Gwen's answer. "That's so romantic."

"Why?" Shawn asks. "What does he get out of it? He knocks himself out spewing poetry. His friend gets the girl. All he can do is go home and blow his big nose."

Jonathan points at him. "Rebuttal from the estrogen section."

"Boys don't understand passion and romance and will never understand women." Topanga states. She turns around in her chair, looking at the boys in the class. "And that's why you'll spend half your lives confused and the other half paying alimony."

"Preach." Gwen commented in agreement, clapping along with the girls of the class. She just shrugged and smiled at her best friends when they both looked at her with offense.

Jonathan raises his eyebrows, nodding as he stands up. "This is interesting. The women here find Cyrano compelling and romantic and yet the men find him misguided, and, uh...Diplike. What does this tell us?"

"Women like dips?" Cory guessed.

"Sorry, Matthews, no luck." Jonathan tells him. "It tells us that men have a hard time understanding what women find romantic."

Shawn looks at him with confusion. "Will that be on the test?"

"Oh, yeah." Jonathan nods. "In ways you cannot yet imagine."

After school the boys told Gwen about how they had to help Frankie woo over the girl he liked and when Gwen found out Shawn didn't know what the word woo meant she found it amusing. She thought he would have know what that word meant by now. They both had asked her for help since they knew they couldn't help Frankie with this by themselves. Plus they added that Frankie asked specifically for her help which confused her but they said she wanted her help because she was a girl so she much know all about this feelings stuff so that's why she was with them at Cory's house. Gwen barely knew anything about having a crush on someone she was having trouble with it herself, but she was going to do her best to help Frankie.

"Hey, Cor." Eric greets his brother when he saw him walk inside. "Hi." Cory replies. Eric then greets Cory's friends after noticing them. "Shawn, Gwen."

"Hi, Eric." Gwen responded, sending him a small smile as she stood by her best friends in the living room. Eric stared at Frankie with wide eyes upon just then seeing him closing the door and he screamed.

"Eric, you know Frankie Stecchino." Cory introduces the two. "Frankie, this is my brother Eric."

"Sure, Eric." Frankie smiles, putting a hand on Eric's shoulder. "I stole your lunch every day in nineth grade." He takes his hand off, pointing at Eric. "Don't tell me...Tuna on white."

Eric nervously chuckles. "Wheat."

"Right, right." Frankie nods with a small smile on his face. "Those were days, huh?"

Eric nervously chuckles and nods. "Excuse me." He turns to face Cory, Gwen, and Shawn. "What's the Enforcer doing in our house?" He asked Cory.

"We have it under control." Shawn assured him.

"It's fine." Cory agreed.

"Yep, everything's fine." Gwen chimed in.

Eric raises his eyebrows, not believing anything the trio said. "Under control? Frankie Stecchino sprinkles guys like you on his pizza."

"Eric. Please. Everything's fine." Cory reassured his brother.

"Okay, just remember-no sudden movements, no shiny objects in front of his face. Okay?" Eric backs away from the trio, nodding at Frankie as he heads to the stairs. "It was nice seeing you again, Frankie."

Frankie points at him and smiles. "Nice to see you again, Tuna."

"Yeah." Eric nervously smiled and ran up the stairs.

Frankie walks over to the trio with a smile. "Okay, guys, teach me the ways of love."

"Alright, Frankie, this girl you like. Do you ever try to talk to her?" Shawn asked her.

A nervous expression forms on Frankie's face and he stumbles over his words. "Oh, I-I, uh...I-I-"

"You cannot let her psych you, man." Shawn points at him. "You just got to walk up right up to her and tell her you like her, okay?"

"Yeah, but that's usually easier said than done." Gwen speaks up. She smiles encouragingly at Frankie. "How about first you just try to ask her how her day is or compliment her."

"Oh..." Frankie's voice trailed off, obviously still nervous about this whole thing.

"Okay," Shawn picks up a lamp off the side table by the couch. "Let's pretend that this is her."

"Could the pillow be her?"

"Anything you want, big guy." Cory answered Frankie's question.

Cory picks up the pillow while Shawn sets down the lamp on the table. Cory holds the pillow in front of his face and Frankie stands in front of him. "Ah, there she is." Shawn said from his place behind Frankie. "Ooh. She looks very pretty today."

"I'd better go." Frankie went to leave, but Gwen quickly stood by Shawn and stopped him from leaving.

"Come on, Frankie." Gwen smiles encouragingly at her, turning him back to face Cory and the pillow. "Just try talking, alright? You got this. Now just tell her how nice she looks."

Shawn nods and whispers to Frankie what he should say next. "I can't take my eyes off you."

"I can't take my eyes off you." Frankie nervously repeated.

"Thank you, Frankie. That's very nice." Cory spoke in a high-pitched voice.

"I just wanted to tell you how pretty that dress is."

Frankie then repeated what Shawn told him to say. "Oh, this old thing?" Cory said in a high-pitched voice again, putting one hand on his hip.

Frankie laughs and smiles. "See, Frankie? Just like I said, you got this." Gwen encouraged him.

"No, no, no," Frankie immediately shakes his head. "I could never do this by myself. You guys have to come with me."

"Frankie, I think she's going to notice two guys and a girl hanging around you." Cory points out. He shrugs. "I mean, what are you going to do, put us in your locker?"

****

The next day at school was when the trio helped Frankie talk with the girl he likes. Thankfully Gwen wasn't put in the locker. Instead, she just hid behind the hallway while her best friends were forced to hide in Frankie's locker. Gwen had told the boys some advice as to what to say to Frankie since they both had no clue what to say today. She only hoped that they remembered what she told them and wouldn't screw this up.

When she noticed a familiar blonde-haired girl walk towards Frankie, Gwen grew confused because she thought that girl was Harley's girlfriend. Was Harley's girlfriend the girl that Frankie liked? If so, then that meant that this was not going to end well.

After overhearing the conversation, Gwen knew it went well by the way she noticed the two smiling at each other as they walked away together. She just hoped that Harley never found out about them together because she was a hundred percent sure that girl was Harley's girlfriend. But she was happy for Frankie finally talking to the girl he liked.

Gwen walks over to Frankie's locker and opens it, letting the boys out. "Awe, you guys listened to me and remembered what I said!" She smiles widely. "Good job, guys."

As he steps out of the locker with Cory, Shawn smiles brightly at her. "Thanks, Neve."

"Thanks to us, Frankie is happy with the girl he likes." Gwen smiled.

"Yeah, she likes him. We did it!" Shawn cheered, high fiving Gwen.

Cory looks at them worriedly. "We did it, alright. We just fixed up Frankie with Harley's Kiner's girlfriend."

Shawn shakes his head. "That's not possible."

Gwen cringes. "I'm afraid it is. I was gonna tell you the bad news, but I was just happy you guys listened and remembered what I told you." After seeing the looks her best friend sent her, she shrugs, sheepishly smiling. "It's rare when you guys do both things." She turned Shawn to face where Frankie and Gloria, Harley's girlfriend, were standing at the end of the hallway.

Shawn's eyes widen and he gasps as he points at the two teens. Frankie did the same thing to Gloria, causing her to look at him weirdly. She and Frankie walked away and Shawn faced his best friends with a panicked expression to see they both were as panicked as he was.

"Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy." Cory begins to pace. "We're in such trouble here."

"No. Nobody saw us." Shawn realizes. "No witnesses. And without witnesses, it's all just circumcised evidence."

"Shawn, we just helped Frankie snake Harley's girlfriend!" Cory yells. "I mean, we gave him love lessons," He gestures to himself and Shawn and then Gwen. "We hid in a locker and G hid behind the corner, we told him what to say. How is that not trouble?"

"Okay, let me think. Um, protective custody...Plastic surgery...Ha! We dress up as girls, Gwen could dress up as a boy or get like a complete makeover where no one could notice her, pretend we're our out-of-town cousins, and say we haven't seen ourselves."

Gwen stares at him deadpanned. "That sounds great and all except for all the horrible flaws."

"Yeah," Cory nods in agreement. "That'll never work."

"Oh, yeah?" Shawn raises his eyebrows. "Tell that to my Uncle Mary."

Gwen's eyes widen and a small gasp leaves her lips upon noticing Harley walking down the steps towards them and she moves to stand by Cory's side. She could feel her nerves begin to grow and her heartbeat increase. Her gasp caught the attention of her best friends and Shawn was quick to stand by her side, him and Cory staring at Harley with shocked expressions.

"Harley!" Cory exclaims. He smiles nervously. "How are ya?"

"Didn't I tell Frankie to dispose of you guys?" Harley asked, pointing at Cory and Shawn.

"Yes...And he did. He killed us. Big time." Shawn nodded.

"And...Now we're the...Angels of ourselves." Cory went along with Shawn's plan.

"And it's time for us to float away." Shawn said. He and Cory began to fling their arms around, jumping and skipping to the other side of the hallway weirdly, trying to act as if they're floating.

"Float..Float." Cory voiced.

Gwen chuckles lightly, crossing her arms and shakes her head. "Idiots." She mumbled.

"Either of you angels seen my girl?" Harley inquired.

Cory and Shawn stop and turn to face him. "You mean Gloria?" Cory questions. "No, there's no reason we could've seen her."

"We were in a locker and Gwen was hiding behind the corner the whole time." Shawn added.

Gwen pinches the bridge of her nose out of annoyance. "I'm saying this with love, Shawnie, sometimes you're an idiot."

Harley glances at Gwen and nods in agreement, agreeing that Shawn was an idiot. He then looks over at the boys with an intimidating stare as he slowly approaches them. "The whole time what, boys?"

"Come on, Shawn. Float." Cory pushed Shawn towards the boy's bathroom and the two boys acted as if they were floating again while Harley followed them, looking at them with a glare.

"Try not to kill them, Harley!" Gwen called out to him, watching them with a worried expression.

"Yeah," Harley responds. "No promises."

****

Gwen was now at Chubbies with her best friends and Harley. She honestly felt bad for Harley. He had just watched his girlfriend and friend, well, flunky, act all lovey dovey with each other. And he had a sad look on his face that made him look like a sad puppy.

"I cannot believe my eyes." Harley comments. "I am betrayed...By my best girl and my most trusted flunky."

"Maybe you just need some time alone." Cory suggested. He went to leave, but Harley grabbed his arm and pulled him back.

"My world is shattered. I feel so...Vulnerable." Harley admits. An angered expression replaces his sad one. "I think I'm going to have to kill somebody." He shoved Cory and Shawn further into the restaurant. He gestured for Gwen to follow them and she doesn't hesitate to follow the boys, not wanting to make Harley mad.

"Okay, everybody out of here!" Harley shouts and everyone scrambles to get up and leave. He points at Frankie and Gloria who were about to leave. "Everybody except you two."

While Gwen didn't try to leave since she didn't see the point, her best friends tried to make a run for it. Their plan of escaping failed since Harley grabbed the back of their shirts and pulled them back.

"Us, too, I guess, huh?" Cory nervously asked.

Harley lets go of them, leaning on the table. He looks at Frankie and then Gloria. "Frankie. Gloria." He chuckles and then an angered look forms on his face. "Imagine my surprise."

"Harley, I can explain." Frankie told him.

Harley nods. "I look forward to hearing it."

"I went behind your back and stole your girl. I know this is a betrayal of our sacred trust...But I have no choice." Frankie looks at Gloria adoringly and Gloria looks at him the same way. "I am but a pawn of love."

Harley looks at Gloria with an upset expression. "How could you do this to me?"

"You wanna know how?" Gloria stands up, standing beside Harley as she glares at him. "I'll tell you how. All it took was somebody saying something nice to me for a change, making me feel special for a change."

A look of offense forms on Harley's face. "I make you feel special. I get you stuff."

Gloria shakes her head, staring at him with confusion. "What did you ever get me that made me feel special?"

Harley is quiet for a few seconds before he exclaims, "Tires! Steel-belted!"

Gloria nods with an annoyed expression on her face. "Three!"

"The guy came back!" Harley shouted.

Gloria starts to get teary-eyed as she points at him. "You never think about what I like!"

"I ain't got that kind of time." Harley remarked.

"Well, maybe you should've made some time." Gloria informs him. "I mean," She goes on a rant, yelling at Harley angrily. "Maybe if you cared about me and thought about me instead of all the time thinkin' about you!"

"Well, if I thought about you, who'd think about me, huh?" Harley questioned.

"Guys!" Cory shouted, stopping the argument from going any father as the two teens turn away from each other.

"What?!" Harley yelled at him.

"You know, every couple goes through this. I mean, you're going through this, my parents are going through it." Cory told the couple.

Harley furrows his eyebrows. "Your parents do this?"

"Well," Cory shrugs. "Not quite as loud, but yeah. See, my mom's mad at my dad because he got her a trash compactor for their anniversary."

Harley chuckles. "What a yutz."

"Oh, yeah." Gloria rolls her eyes. "That's a long way away from tires."

"So. Your parents. Are they gonna split up?" Harley asked Cory.

"No." Cory shakes his head. "I mean, they'll work it out. They always do."

"How?"

"I don't know." Cory responded to Harley.

Harley nods slowly. "But they always do?"

"Yeah." Cory nodded.

Harley glanced between Frankie and Gloria before he walked out. Once again, Gwen felt bad for Harley. But she somehow knew that things would work out in the end just like they always do.
