Chapter 4: April

No one could guess the day our lives end on this earth, but for April she had expected it three times in her life. The first had been when she was 30 and she decided to end her life.

The next had been few months later and she had been a given new life in the form of Hope, her daughter. April would never regret the 30 years of life she got to spend with Anna and Hope but she is beginning to regret keeping them in the dark about her for so long.

She could even tell them the truth today, but she was maybe a coward that she didn't want to be present when the perfect illusion of her life shatters. She is worried about letting them pick the pieces after she is gone but even she is not sure if she would disappear today or not.

If anyone ever told a 30 year old April time travel would be possible she would have laughed at their face. But she is the living proof of such truth.

Her life changed on its axis when she was 30 year old as well. She never had gotten to celebrate her birthday because she was the curse of her mother's existence.

It had been her 30th Birthday when she got a call from her mother out of a blue since her mother never remembered her birthday but April felt a flicker of hope as she answered that call only for her mother to start ranting about how April was the reason everything went wrong in her life.

Her mom got pregnant when she was a teen and her parents refused to let her abort for religious reasons but when her mom turned 18 they washed their hands off her as well leaving her raising a kid alone.

April always known her mom as bitter person. Someone who reminded April about being the curse of her existence every single day. If she lost a job opportunity then she would come back home and blame April for it.

"Who would hire a single mother?" "Who would date a single mother?" , " I never really wanted you to be born" , " You are the reason everything falls apart in my life".

April had heard it all. It had been the reason she left home at 18 and never looked back. Even then she couldn't fully cut her mother out of her life, so she still answers her call. Usually there would be only two reasons for the call, one her mother asking for more and the another her mother calling to blame her for something that went wrong in her life.

On her birthday, she would have been relieved if her mother called asking for money but she called to blame April for another boyfriend leaving her.

"I could have had it all you know, if only I hadn't got pregnant with you. I hate you " those drunken slurred words stayed with April throughout the day.

It had been the reason she decided to end it all on her birthday. If April had one person that would care about her disappearance she would have fought those feelings or would have relied on them.

But after her mother's cruel words, she never could let anyone close to her fearing they would think of her as a curse as well if things fall apart.

Even then she couldn't do it on her home because it would mean the landlord and her roommates would have do deal with the repercussions. They might not be her friends but they had wished her happy birthday. Two words but she owed them that much consideration when her own mother failed to do so.

So she got onto a bus and packed all her belonging and left her roommates a note and the landlord her notice of moving away and got into a bus. She had intended to travel as far away as possible and then disappear.

She wired the remaining cash she had on her bank account to her mother and planned to stay the night at a hotel before travelling again. It was where she heard that place was known for its hiking and also known for its missing hikers.

That was where she found the idea of being found dead after gone missing better than known for killing herself. So she set out to go on a hike the very same night much against the advise of the fellow travellers who cautioned night wasn't the safest time for a lone hike.

She remembered that they all cautioned her not to visit the caves since most people went missing right around that place. So it was her go to spot as she walked and walked in her new hiking attire which meant her feet was filled with blisters and all her possession included the few jewelery she had on her and necessities to last the night.

Her courage almost failed her when the night grew dark and the realisation the death she longed for may not happen as she wanted it to happen.

The sound of wildlife scared her, the sound of stillness terrified her more but she couldn't turn back. Then she found the cave and no trespassing sign. She didn't know why she walked inside the cave that night except she was tired of her life always getting blamed for just existing had worn out her heart to the extent she didn't even realised she was truly depressed to the brink of collapse until her feet carried her inside the cave and her mind wondered back to every harsh words her mother ever uttered towards her.

Each sentence gave her the push to walk much further until she wished she could erase her existence from her mother's life not just now but even before she was born.

She kept thinking if only I somehow stopped my mom from going to prom and getting pregnant with me. Her life would have been different. It was illogical but she had heard it often from her mother about how she was crowned the queen of prom night only to make the biggest mistake of her life the very same day aka April.

She had seen enough horror movies to known what happened inside the cave at the moment closely resembled a scary scene from a movie. They were brightening light and loud sound of music that almost broke her ear drum and the next second she was standing inside a school campus.

The one thing that got her attention had been the big banner welcoming everyone for the prom night.
