I'm Screwed: Percy
I'm so dead.
That was the only thing that was rushing through my head as I sat inside the Hab, which was my only way of escaping the atmosphere outside. If I go out without my suit, I will just suffocate to death which will generally suck.
God...I had been here for over a day now and I was still in deep shock of my current status. Why Chaos had to snatch me from my friends and family, I had no idea. All he said was that I had to stay here and survive for over a year until the truth of what I've done came out to Camp Half-Blood. But how in the name of the gods am I suppose to survive on the universe's only desolate planet, with barely any food and no way to contact my friends?
This sucks.
Maybe I should explain what happened. Okay, let me just go back to yesterday and explain what just happened.
===========
I was lying down on my bed with Annabeth lying next to me. Me and her were living in my mom's apartment, and when it came down to it my mom was generally alright with it as long as we behaved. The rest of the team were in the other room sleeping, which was fine with them because they gave me and Annabeth some space. The reason why we got some space was because we were looking after our four month old son, Alan.
Annabeth shifted in her sleep, sighing through her nose as she cuddled up next to me. As gently as I could, I wrapped my arm around her. I was still awake because I still had bad dreams when I slept - the accusing from Nathan Garrow; our expulsion from Camp; the look on every campers faces as they yelled at us to leave -
Alan started crying in his cot, which was at the foot of mine and Annabeth's bed. Annabeth stirred as she was about to get up.
"Don't worry it," I told her, getting out of bed and walking disoriented towards his cot. "I got him."
I looked down at my son who was crying and wailing and thrashing about. His hair started to come out and I could tell that he was going to have my black hair. Apparently, according to my mom, he acts just as I did as a baby - because my constant wailing for my mother got on her nerves when she tried to get some sleep. I sighed as I reached down and picked Alan up.
"Hey buddy," I gently said, holding him in my arms so that he could look at me. "Huh, you just want some company? Is that it? God, you got a loud way of saying it."
Annabeth looked at me as I cradled our son. Gradually, he stopped crying as he looked up at me. When he saw me, he tried to reach up and grab my face. I smiled down at him and leaned my face downwards so that he could touch it. Annabeth smiled at the sight of me and my son bonding.
"You two look cute together," she said. She must've been exhausted but she didn't lay it on or anything. "How you can calm him down and I can't, I will never know."
I smiled at her and kissed her forehead. "Guess it's just another one of my amazing qualities."
She chuckled. "It sure is, Seaweed Brain."
She held out her arms and I gave Alan to her. When Alan looked up at his mother, he started making cooing noises and Annabeth just smiled at him, her eyes sparkling with love.
While she and him were bonding, I walked out of the room just so I could get some water. For some reason, waking up in the middle of the night when my son cried was thirsty work.
When I got into the kitchen I saw that Leo, Jason, Frank and Nico were up and sitting at the table. They all wore their pyjamas and were all drawn out and tired. When I got into the kitchen, they looked up and saw me.
"That's the tenth time your son woke us up," Jason grumbled and yawned. "The tenth time in a row."
I gave him a pointed look. "Give it a rest Jason. You're not the only one who's tired. How do you think me and Annabeth are feeling?"
Nico looked up at me. His eyes had black bags underneath them which confirmed his tiredness. "We're not having a go Percy. Heck, the girls are still fast asleep - thank the gods that they're heavy sleepers. Otherwise, we would be having a huge argument right about now."
Hazel, Piper, Reyna and Calypso were asleep in the living room and they barely heard any noise. It did make me feel a little envious because I just wished that I could be able to get some sleep away from Alan's continuous crying. I wouldn't do that however because I could never do that to my son - I loved him too much.
I crossed over to the sink and got a pint of water, downing it all in one as my throat was killing me.
As I looked back at my friends, I still couldn't believe that it had been over two years now that since we were expelled from Camp. Well...it was only suppose to be me but the others wouldn't leave me so they came along with me, much to the camps obvious dismay. Nathan Garrow however didn't care - he just wanted my posistion at camp and nothing else.
Leo groaned as he stretched his arms. "Jeez, after this I think me and Calypso need a vacation."
Frank snorted. "Still thinking about taking her to San Antonio?"
Leo thought for a moment. "Now that I think about it...do you think we should go to a different place?"
"If it were up to me," I said, "I go to Montauk. It's really peaceful there - the sea is almost the calmest and the people there are always kind."
Jason nodded his head in thoughtful longing. "Yeah, it does sound like a good place, but wouldn't that remind her too much of old home on Ogygia?"
"Ah," I answered. "Yeah, good point. Well...if there was any other place...I would say maybe Santa Monica in L.A."
Leo frowned. "Really?"
I nodded. "Yeah. The sun always shine's there and the beach stretches for miles on end. She'd love it."
Frank scratched his head - sort of like a dog. In fact, I could almost imagine him turning into his bulldog form. "Right, I'm gonna turn in for the night - I got a big day tomorrow."
Frank had gotten a job as a security guard for the New York bank on 225 Liberty Street. They requested him when he managed to stop a robber who almost got away with half a million dollars.
I nodded. "Go ahead pal."
Soon after he went to sleep, we all turned in for the night. When I got into bed with Annabeth, I fell straight asleep. But when I woke up the next time, I was in for one nasty shock.
Because I wasn't even in my own bed.
==========
I woke up in the middle of what looks like a labatory with tables all over the place. All of them had computers on them and to be fair it looked more like a science classroom. As I looked down at myself, I could see that I was wearing light thermal jeans and a cool, light weight, long sleeved black top. On one sleeve, I could see the insignia of Olympus - a white patch with the omega symbol on it, with a lightning bolt behind it.
I got out of what looked like a bunk bed and saw the whole interior of the room that I was in. After walking in it for a good twenty minutes, I would have to say that it was roughly ninety two meters squared in total of space floor; three lab tables and what looked like hallways - something you would normally see in airports. In the corner is what looked like oxygen tanks and several tanks of water.
The one thing that got me really confused were the suits in the main living area - white body suits with several orange patches on them. On the shelf on top of them were helmets - heavy space helmets which said NASA on the side of the glossy glass.
Were these...space suits?
"I see you've noticed your oxygenated landscape suit."
I spun around and came face to face with a middle-aged man. He wore grey robes with black jeans; his eyes were midnight black and completely devoid of any emotion and his hair was a mixture of black and silver which made him look old but somehow keeping some of his youth. I knew that I was looking at someone from the world of the gods because he had a sword attached to his belt - one of them old-fashioned bastard swords that was black at the hilt and handle and silver at the blade.
"Who are you?" I demanded, reaching into my pocket and bringing out Riptide - my metre and a half bronze sword which started to glow. "Where am I?"
The man scowled. "Oh, for gods sake Jackson. Put the sword away - there's no need for violence. Not now."
His voice was very authoritive and I could tell by his voice that fighting him would be a bad idea. I lowered Riptide. "Who are you?"
The man spread his arms. "I am Chaos, Primordial god of creation and father of the other Primordials."
I frowned. "Chaos? What?"
He sighed. "Basically, I am the great-great grandfather of your father and uncles."
I dropped the sword in shock. I stared wide-eyed at him, finally realising who I was speaking to. I knew who Chaos was, thanks to my dad Poseidon. Chaos was the being that created everything in the beginning - creating Gaia and the first generation of Primordials. He was the god that helped create and shape the earth and the sky and the sea and Tartarus. And I could tell that he radiated immense power - way more stronger than any immortal that I have ever encountered.
It was way more stronger than Gaia and Tartarus combined. So at that point, I knew that I would never stand a chance against him if I resorted to violence. "What have you done? Why did you bring me here? What is this place?"
"This place is called the Hab," Chaos told me, starting to circle me. "Short for habitat, this place is designed to keep you alive for over two years at most. It is completely full of oxygen and it needs to be so you breathe. The whole place is built mainly from plastic and hard metal combined, so you'll be protected from the atmosphere outside the Hab."
"Protected by the atmosphere?" I asked, bewildered by his statement. "What's wrong with the air outside?"
In answer, Chaos snapped his fingers and a puff of white smoke surrounded me. When the smoke cleared, I looked down at myself and I saw that I was wearing one of the suits that was on the rack wall. It felt light, but the helmet was what felt the heaviest to me - the suit merged with the helmet (like when you see an astronauts suit, all you have to do is screw the helmet onto the collar of the suit and it is shut tightly). The boots I wore also merged with the suit, and it felt like I wearing solid bricks because they were rock hard underneath. I also wore clothes - leather clothes that stuck on the suit like velcro.
"What in the name of-!" I exclaimed. I looked up at Chaos, who was satisfied with how I looked.
"To answer your question, Perseus Jackson," he said, "come outside with me."
He walked into one of the hallways, making me follow him. He told me to close the airlock door because I couldn't allow the air to escape the Hab. As soon as I did that, he walked up to a control panel to another airock door and typed in a code of sorts. A brief hiss of smoke filled the room and then I could see clearly again. Then, Chaos opened the door and a bright flash of light filled the room, but that quickly vanished when I looked at the landscape.
All I saw was a barren wasteland. It looked as if it stretched for miles on end - because all I saw was gold and red sand with red pebbles and boulders. When I walked onto the ground, it felt like ordinary sand though it felt a little harder than any other sand I walked on. When I looked on either side of the Hab, I could see that I was in some sort of passageway - because I saw two massive cliffs overlooking the Hab. When I looked at the sky, I did a double take - the sun looked further away than usual and for some reason I felt cold. All in all, the whole landscape was just deserted apart from me and Chaos, who was not wearing a suit.
"Hey, why aren't you wearing a suit?" I demanded.
He looked at me with his hands behind his back. "Unlike you and the rest of your species, I am not affected by the atmosphere here. You need that suit on because it is your only source of oxygen when come outside here. Have you noticed the white pack on your back?"
I looked over my shoulder and saw that he was right. I was wearing a hard white plastic pack on my back and it was connected to the back of my helmet. "That's an oxygen pack?"
"Yeah. Once you get into the Hab, you refill it with more oxygen from the oxygenator. Don't worry about that machine because automatically starts forming more air for you."
"I...I...don't...where...?" I stammered, throwing my hands up in confusion. "Where am I?"
Chaos looked me in the eye. "Think Jackson. I am the god that created everything in the universe. I also created the other planets, forming your solar system in the process. Tell me - where do you think we are right now?"
My eyes widened. I was on another planet?! As I looked around, I started taking note of things - barren desert; red rocks and sand stretching all over the place; oxygen suit so I could breathe; the sun is further away...there was only one planet that would fit that description and that was -
"I'm on Mars?!" I shouted in shock and horror.
Chaos nodded. "You're on the Red Planet. The location of this sight is in Acidalia Planitia, which is right at the edge of one of Mars's many craters. Those aren't cliffs Jackson, they're the edges of a crater. You're five million miles away from earth with absolutely no way to communicate with earth. I am sorry to say that you'll be staying here for some time."
Oh, shit.
=========
I was brought back into the Hab where I listened to what Chaos had to say about supplies.
"Right, listen very carefully," he said, walking into the cafeteria and opening the cupboards. Inside, there were trays of silver packets. "All of these are your food supply - inside each of these packets is a completely different type of food. In th next cupboard over, you got your water and juices in there. On the cupboard next to that coffee machine and that microwave? That is your standard ration packs - protein, calcium, vitamins - everything your body needs to keep you going."
On and on he went about everything that the Hab holds. He taught me how to work the water reclaimer and oxygenator; he showed me where the toilets are (not going to talk about that); then, he told me that the days here on Mars was different - they are measured by sold instead of days. Apparently according to Chaos, the hours here are forty minutes longer than back on earth so that meant I will be having some late nights.
"Hey," Chaos snapped, waving a hand in front of my face. "Concentrate here Jackson. You need all the information you can get."
That's easy for him to say - I could barely remember any of the facts that Annabeth tells me and they nearly send me to sleep.
"You won't be going to sleep," Chaos ordered. He snapped hs fingers again.
I frowned. "What was that for?"
"I enhanced your brain intelligence by twenty percent," the Primordial answered. "You had a brain capacity of maybe fifteen percent. I can feel your intelligence levels just by reading your mind. You are now more smarter than you think - everything that a survivor will need if you are to get out of here alive."
"Just explain to me why you are doing this?" I asked him, desperate to know why I was here.
Chaos's shoulders slumped. He sat down on a nearby desk chair and looked at me with his arms resting on the arms of the chair.
"I brought you here because I have had enough of watching my favourite hero being scorned by his own friends at Camp Half-Blood," he answered sincerely. "I've seen what Nathan Garrow has done to you and the rest of your only friends. So I have brought you here to get their attention - NASA will find out your location soon enough with their satellite orbiting Mars 24/7. If Camp Half-Blood won't notice, then they'll hear it on the news. Plus, I have read the mind of one demigod who follows Garrow, but in his heart he is still loyal to you. I am sure he will have enough conscious to prove your innocence."
I listened intently when he mentioned Camp Half-Blood. Just hearing Garrow's name just makes my blood boil with searing hatred. But when he mentioned that someone could prove my innocence...I was already keen on listening. To be fair, I never took much thought to Camp because of what happened - I was happy with hanging out with my friends and family....and mostly spending time with Annabeth and our little boy.
"I'm guessing that I won't have much contact with my friends?" I grumbled. Just thinking that I won't be able to speak to my friends was killing me.
Chaos smiled. "You'll find a way. Don't forget, I have enhanced your brain - you can come up with some way to communicate with them. I'll only give you a hint - the way to contact them is out there."
He pointed at one of the windows, where I could see the landscape of Mars shining blood red in the morning light.
Chaos looked at his watch. "Oooh. I best be going - my wife is going to kill me otherwise."
"What - you're leaving?" I frowned. "But...how long do I need to stay here?"
Chaos sighed sadly. "If you want an honest answer - it'll be more than a year."
My eyes widened. "What?! It's that long? But I only got enough supplies to keep me fed for only thirty one sols! How am I suppose to eat?!"
Chaos smiled. "You'll find a logical way to overcome that. Now goodbye - I'll let your family know soon. Just stay alive."
And with that, he vanished like he wasn't even there in the first place.
=======
So, that's how I got here. I'm stuck here until I can think of a way to get off this planet.
However, I need to take this really seriously. I know for a fact that I'm in a small habitat to keep me safe for more than two years. I got enough food to keep me going for little over thirty sols.
And that's not the worst of the news - I've got no way to contact my friends or NASA and even if I did it's gonna be impossible for a manned mission to get here: the technology wasn't even invented yet and it's gonna take them more than half a year to get here.
And the problems with the Hab are way off the charts - if the oxygenator breaks I'll suffocate; if the water reclaimer breaks then I'll die of thirst; if the Hab gets damaged or part of it rips I'll just implode...and by some miracle none of that happens...eventually I'll run out of food.
So, in a depressing nutshell, I am simply fucked.
