The Origins of the Chaos Cretures: Percy POV
"Luke is back?!"
I nodded to Annabeth's question. I had her on FaceTime on Yugi's iPad, and I could see the look of deep horror when I told her what I saw yesterday. I managed to get healed from my duel against Luke and Keith, who just vanished into nowhere after the duel. Whatever power that was that caused me pain with every attack, it was bad - it was like feeling a knife shard running up my spine, and let me tell ya': it freaking hurt like Hades.
Annabeth leaned back on her chair in the video call. "How is that possible?"
I told her what Luke told me - how the gods lied to us about where his soul was at the moment; how he lived through Tartarus; his deal with the lord of the pit and his alliance with his new master. As soon as I finished, Annabeth had a very angry look on her face.
"How could they lie to us?" she fumed. "They assured us that he would be placed in Elysium! How could they do that to him?"
"Luke said that the gods only saw the bad in him," I told them, my own annoyance at the gods spiking. "So, rather than give him a second chance, they decided not to give it him and send him to hell. And now because of it he's seriously pissed off with me. Why though, I have no idea. All he said was that Tartarus wanted to punish me for what me, you and the rest of the Seven did to Gaia."
Annabeth sighed, burying her head in one hand. "If Luke is back, and is actively seeking revenge on you, then you really need to be careful."
I gave her a lopsided grin. "Me? Being careful? When has that ever worked when it came down to Luke?"
Annabeth actually chuckled at that. "Anyhow, I try and see if I can get to Domino City as soon as I can. By the sounds of it, you're gonna need a lot of help."
I frowned. "Are you sure? With Luke on the loose, there's no telling what he might do. Plus, you know what he was like in the Titan War: he was very manipulative towards you. He's always tricked you into doing what he wants."
Annabeth nodded. "I know. But I don't want my husband dealing with this trouble on his own. If you're going through a problem then me, you and Zoe are going through it together. As a family."
I hesitated, but I eventually gave up after hearing her say that. That's the thing about Annabeth - she always knows what's right. "Alright. Let me know when you arrive, I'll come and pick you up."
"Alright. Now take care of yourself, Seaweed Brain," she said. "Oh, and if you see Luke..."
She gave me a knowing look. "...kick his ass." The video call ended, leaving me sitting at the coffee table in the silence.
"Oh, I will," I softly said, clenching my fist. "Don't you worry about that, Wise Girl."
=============
"...and you managed to beat this guy?" Joey finished his question, chomping away at his slice of pizza.
I nodded. I had just finished explaining who Luke was and what he caused all those years ago in Manhattan. At some point, Tristan (Joeys childhood friend with dark brown hair, dark brown eyes and was wearing what looked like a bikers uniform) asked questions about why he would be a problem.
"You've defeated him before," he pointed out. "Can't you just beat him again?"
I shrugged and shook my head, grabbing another slice of pizza. "That's the thing. He hosted the spirit of Kronos last time and he was nearly impossible to beat as it was. With him working for Tartarus and this unknown master of his, I don't know what to think."
"By the sounds of everything you've told us," Teá said slowly, picking at the chips and salsa in front of her, "it's really personal to you and Annabeth."
"Personal?" Nico muttered, eating grapes. "Are you kidding me? Luke was Annabeth's best friend, along with Jason's sister, Thalia. Luke and Annabeth have a history, and this was way before Percy and Annabeth got together. Luke acted like Percy's friend, and then he tried to kill him with a poisonous scorpion. Annabeth doesn't like it when people fail her, and she hated the fact that he practically betrayed her and tried to kill Percy. With him back, there's no telling what he'll do this time. He's very manipulating when it comes down to Annabeth."
I grimaced. "It's true. He was like that when it came down to Annabeth. He could get her to do almost anything he wanted."
"And you're wife is coming here? To Domino City, along with your daughter?" Solomon said, drinking his coffee. "If what you said about this Luke character is true, wouldn't Annabeth be in danger along with your daughter? That could represent a major problem."
"It would," I told him, "but then again, Annabeth wouldn't listen to me if I try and warn her about something like this. She said that if I was in trouble, then we handle it together. There's no way I could convince her if she said that. So, she's coming here to help. Whether I like it or not."
"She's a very determined demigod, I'll give her that," Jason said, finishing off one of his buffalo wings and wiping his hand with a tissue. "She's the smartest out of the Seven, and Athena's most treasured daughter. If anyone has a plan, it's Annabeth. She knows what she's doing."
I nodded to Jason.
"Well, whatever she does, I hope that she can get here safely," Yugi said, his Puzzle dangling from his neck. "By the sounds of it, we've got more trouble along the way, and I fear that it's going to be worse than dealing with Pegasus."
I thought on his words, thinking how this could any worse than Pegasus or the Titan and Giant Wars. Then again, based on my luck in life, that means that there's always something dangerous waiting for me and my friends.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when Joey picked up the TV remote. "Ah, I'm done listening to the music channel. Let's find something more entertaining to watch."
He flicked through several channels, moving so fast that I couldn't see what was on. Not that I minded - I didn't watch a lot of TV as it was. I was about to take a bite out of my slice of pizza, until I saw something on the TV suddenly.
Did that just look like the Millennium Symbol?
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!" I said quickly, quickly tapping Joey on the shoulder. "Joey, go back two channels."
"Why? What's up?"
"Just go back a couple of channels. I thought I saw something."
Joey frowned, but did as I said. Soon, the TV showed a live news footage of what looked like a museum, and then it came to some old Egyptian slabs. On one of the slabs was the Millennium Symbol.
"Yugi," I said slowly, my eyes never leaving the TV. "You might want to tell Yami about this. This might interest you both."
Yugi nodded, closing his eyes. Before I knew it, Yami's astral form appeared right next to Yugi and he watched the news footage, his eyes frowning for interest. He stared quite intently at the screen, before the news reporter started to speak.
"As you can see, the artefacts have been carefully and professionally delivered over at the Domino Museum of Egyptian History," the news woman said to the microphone. "These old stone slabs have been presumed to be well over five thousand years old, and researchers are still baffled and amazed at how well preserved they are, even after all this time. Leading team member Ishizu Ishtar has kindly stated that these slabs will remain here, until further notice. And here to speak about these stone carvings is Miss Ishtar herself."
A young woman stepped into the image. She had long black hair and dark kind eyes, though they seemed to hold a vast amount of knowledge in them. Her skin was deeply tanned as if she's lived her whole life in the sun. She wore tan and creamed coloured robes, that flowed to her feet and she had a kind smile, though I suspected that it was a put on. But the thing that interested me was the necklace around her neck. It was all golden, just like Yugi's Puzzle, and in the centre was the Millennium Symbol. It glowed just for a fraction of a second.
"Thank you, Miss O'Riley," she said with a kind and calm voice. "As you can see, these stone tablets have been safely locked and contained. We have indeed concluded that they are from the period of when duel monsters first started, which we believe was little over five thousand years ago as you've stated. We have also looked at the history behind them - it states that the game was created in a time of deep depression and war, and the Pharaoh during that time had helped his followers summon powerful monsters to help fight a great evil that threatened to destroy him and the world. These tablets will serve as a great way to show the fans and community of Domino City how treasured the game really is."
"So, this basically explains the origin of Duel Monsters?" Teá said with a look of deep interest. "I have to admit that it does sound somewhat interesting."
"This could help me out with my memory loss," Yami stated, his arms crossed. "I knew that I was once Pharaoh, but I don't know the whole background story and I could do with learning more about this."
"Well, you may be right," Yugi said quietly since all the others were now glued to the screen, apart from Teá who heard Yugi. "We could have a look at that, but I'm not sure how much we can gain from that."
"You can learn a lot by talking to that Ishizu woman," I pointed out, pointing a finger at the screen. "I don't know whether you've noticed it or not, but I think she's wearing another Millennium Item."
"Really?" Yugi's eyes widened. "I don't see it."
I pointed at the screen again. "That necklace of hers. It has the same symbol as your Puzzle, so it must be connected to it somehow."
Yugi observed the necklace intently, as well as Yami. I swear, they both looked so alike that it was freaky - they both have the same intense stare and they both had their arms crossed over their chests. It was like seeing the 'like father, like son' complex, though I knew that they weren't related in any way, though they did look the same, even with the obvious age difference.
Just then, my phone rang. I looked at my screen and saw that it was an unknown number. I frowned and I instantly grew wary of it. It could be anyone trying to call me. And I knew that it was dangerous of me to answer it because monsters can get easily attracted to the signal. I knew that if I answered the phone, it would be like sending up a flare to any monster within ten miles. I might as well have put a sign on my head saying 'FREE SNACK OVER HERE, FOLKS!'
I stood up and walked out of the room, quickly answering it. "Hello? Who's this speaking?"
"Good evening, Mr Jackson," a woman's voice said on the other side of the phone. "My name is Ishizu Ishtar, the woman you may have seen on the TV."
My eyes widened. It was that Ishtar woman? I quickly looked back at the TV in the other room, which caught Jason and Nico's attention. She still appeared to be talking to the news reporter, her kind smile still on her face. I slowly turned back to the phone.
"How is that even possible? How'd you get my number?" I quietly said, not getting the others attention.
"I got your number from one of those old news stories that was written about you," the woman answered. "Free appliances to your stepfathers office, while recovering from your traumatic abduction when you were just twelve years old. You gave out the number to call home, so I assumed that it was the same after all this time."
I felt my cheeks go warm in embarrassment. Damn, I seriously need to change my phone number.
I crossed my arms whilst still holding the phone. "Okay, you got my attention. What do you want?"
"Please look at the TV and that will explain your answer."
I frowned before leaning back to listen to the TV screen.
"And I am personally inviting Mr Seto Kaiba and Mr Percy Jackson to a meeting concerning these tablets," Ishizu stated. "The reason for this is because out of every duellist, they are the only ones who possess cards relating to the famous and notorious Blue Eyes White Dragon, which a number of these tablets talk about. This will be the chance for them to become more aquatinted with their most powerful monsters."
My eyes widened, before turning back to the phone. "There's something you want to show me and Kaiba? What is it?"
"Please meet me at the Domino Museum, and I'll show you what it is I want to show you."
===========
After quickly changing into smart clothes, I managed to get a taxi down to the museum, with Jason and Nico tagging along of course. We were all dressed up in tuxedo blazers, which were black for me and Nico, while Jason wore a white blazer. We were all wearing jeans and boots, so we looked like a trip of dudes that were going to a casino of sorts.
And we were arguing about what was going on.
"You don't even know who this woman is!" Jason said, waving his hands frantically. "For all we know, she could be another duellist who wants to test herself and you haven't got time for that!"
"Yeah, but she asked for me personally," I countered. "No duellist would do that. Well...Pegasus did that, but this is completely different. She said she was inviting Kaiba along, so this must concern me and him. It could be important."
"To be honest with you Jason, Percy does raise a fair point," Nico said, straightening his jacket as best as he could. "If it's important, then we should check it out. If it concerns Percy in anyway, then it's must important."
"I know, but everyone seems to be after Percy a lot," Jason muttered with a sigh. "And I'm afraid that our bro over here is gonna get hurt one day."
I chuckled. Over the years, these two guys and I have grown close as brothers. We fought together, we play fight with each and we train new heroes daily at both Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter. Everyone called us the younger version of the Big Three gods, which we silently agreed on. Not that I'm being proud or anything: I just like the fact that me and my two cousins have a group name for ourselves.
Our taxi stopped and we got out, looking at the massive museum in front of us. To be fair, it looked like a metal version of the Parthenon back in Athens, but it seemed much bigger than I thought. It was easily around ten stories high. Banners ran down from the top of the building, and even though my dyslexia played up, I could tell that it was promoting all the newest Egyptian artefacts.
"Well, this gives me a feeling of de'ja'vu," Jason announced solemnly. "It's like we're back in Athens all of a sudden."
I nodded. Nico - who wasn't there at the battle of the Giants in Athens - just looked at us sympathetically before turning back at the museum in front of us.
"Well, if it isn't the Blue Eyes Duellist and his two friends."
I rolled my eyes slightly, turning around to see Kaiba walking over to us, holding his usual silver case. This time, he wore a purple version of the coat he wore last time we met. On his wrists were silver bracelets and he wore what looked like a card attached to a string around his neck. He looked slightly annoyed, but he hid it really well by feigning a look of interest.
"I'm guessing you got the same call from the Ishizu woman," he said, stating it rather than asking it.
I nodded in agreement. "Yep. I have no idea how she got my number, but I did as I was asked and came here. So, there's only the question as to why she asked us to come here."
Kaiba pondered this, before looking at his watch. "Well, I hope it will won't take long. I've got a company to run."
I frowned. "How come she asked you here?"
Kaiba shrugged. "She said something about a card that surpasses Exodia."
"WHAT?!" Me, Jason and Nico exclaimed in shock.
"A card that exceeds The Forbidden One? How is that even possible?!" I demanded. "Exodia is the rarest card in the game, and it's even rarer to draw all five pieces of Exodia as it is! How can there be a card that exceeds it completely?"
"I have no idea," Kaiba said, admitting for once. "Even I'm a little doubtful about this. But I figured since I like collecting rare cards, I'll look into it. But I wonder why she brought you here?"
"All I heard on the news was that she wanted to show us something, since we both possess cards relating to the Blue Eyes White Dragons," I answered, my confusion growing even more. I looked at the building. "That makes me question as to what she really wants to show us. I don't know if she's being real, or if she's just wasting my time. But I might as well get this over and done with."
"What makes you say that?" the CEO of KaibaCorp said.
I looked him dead in the eye. "I figured out a long time ago to just go with what people ask you, because the more you ignore them, the more they will keep asking you until you finally consent to what they ask."
"Hmm," Kaiba said, scratching his chin. "You raise a valid point there, Jackson. If push comes to shove, you'd make a good businessman with everything you're saying."
"Percy being a businessman?" Nico laughed. "Yeah, next you'll be saying that Percy would turn out to be an sea animal rescuer or a fireman!"
Jason chuckled along with Nico, which made me roll my eyes at them.
"Welcome, Mr Kaiba and Mr Jackson."
All of us turned around to face Ishizu Ishtar. She walked graciously down the steps leading to the museum, her tanned robes dragging behind her a little. Behind her were two men in black hijab'a and black suits, standing protectively as if expecting some sort of attack.
I bowed slightly. "Miss Ishtar."
Ishizu smiled slightly. "No need for formalities, Percy Jackson."
I nodded in understanding. "Sorry. It's what I'm like when talking to new people."
"That's perfectly alright," Ishizu said. "It just proves that you really are humble as people say."
She turned to Kaiba. "Welcome to Domino Museum, Mr Kaiba. I am pleased that you have come tonight, as well as Mr Jackson."
"Look, spare me all the talk," he harshly said. "I'm here because you've caught my interest about a card that exceeds Exodia. To my understanding and knowledge, there is no such card that has such capabilities like the one you described to me on the phone."
"Yeah, I agree with Kaiba here," I told her, my doubts already coming back to me. "I really can't see how there's a card that can exceed The Forbidden One. I know that's it's rare to draw all five of its pieces, but it's still the most powerful monster in the game. So how can there be something even more powerful than that?"
Ishizu smiled. "All in good time, Percy Jackson. So, if you'll be so kind, follow me. As for your friends..." She turned to Jason and Nico. "I must apologise, but you must stay here while your friend and Kaiba are having this meeting with me. I assure that I'm not up to anything in particular to cause them any form of harm," she said whilst holding up a placating hand when Jason was about to protest. "I simply wish to show them something and to give them advice about...certain situations that revolve around them."
Nico came forward. "With all due respect Miss Ishtar, I don't think that is leaving Percy alone is gonna happen. We made a vow to his wife that we would look out for him, and that means accompanying him wherever he goes. So, sorry but if you're gonna talk to Percy then you'll gonna have to bring us with you."
Ishizu tilted her head a little, as if curious about Nico. She was about to respond, but I held up my hand and turned to Nico.
"Nico, you and Jason stay here."
Nico looked like he was going to protest, but I quickly cut in. "I'm gonna be fine, Neeks. I've got a feeling that I can trust this woman. She doesn't seem in any way shape or form to be a threat. In fact, I'm sure she's harmless. Just wait here, while I talk to her and I'll be back in a few minutes. I promise."
Jason placed a hand on Nico's shoulder. "I think Percy is right, Nico. It'll be alright. I know he won't go far."
Nico finally relented, letting me go as me, Kaiba and Ishizu walked into the building.
==============
"Your friends are very protective of you," Ishizu stated as we walked down the hallway.
I smiled. "Yeah. Sorry about that. They're protective of me for a reason. They think that my wife will kill them if she finds out that I've been harmed in any way, or if I go missing. And let me tell: you do not want to mess with my wife when she's mad. It's terrifying."
Ishizu chuckled quietly. "She sounds quite the woman if she's also protective of you. I'm sure Annabeth will be assured that you're not in harms way."
"Thank god, otherwise-" I stopped, looking at Ishizu. "Wait a minute, how did you know my wife's name? I didn't even tell you."
Ishizu looked over her shoulder at Kaiba, who only stared straight ahead and not really looking at us. She looked back and gave me a subtle wink. I understood the message quite clearly: 'I'll explain in a moment.' I kept my mouth shut, knowing that I would demand an answer in front of Kaiba and he would get suspicious...if he even believes in any of this.
Ishizu lead us down a staircase to a restricted area. Down we went, until we entered a small enclosed room that was pitch black, so I couldn't see anything. That was until Ishizu switched on the lights and I was instantly both awed and amazed at the sight of what filled up the room.
"Whoa," I said, looking at three massive stone tablets that stood proudly at thirteen feet tall. They had impressive carvings on them: people and monsters surrounding and covering the tablets; hieroglyphic writing stating stories and names, as well as the deeds of overs I presumed; then I saw the the real thing that caught my attention...
"These portray duel monster games!" I said in awe.
Kaiba came over, looking at each individual monster carving. "How is this even possible? They look exactly like the monsters we duellists use today."
"There's a theory that these monsters were once real," Ishizu said, standing next to me as she spoke, "and that human beings once called upon these mighty beasts to help them with everyday life. But soon, they learnt that they could not control the monsters and that they could not control their powers. They nearly brought Earth to the brink of destruction. So they turned to the Pharaoh to help them. Though he could not permanently defeat the monsters, he manage to use his magic to seal them away in stone tablets and brought peace to the world. The people could then summon and command them to do their bidding."
"So, this is the origin of Duel Monsters then?" I asked, looking at the carvings with deep interest. "To be honest, this is rather interesting. To know how it all started is definitely something to learn about."
"Though I'm sensing a 'however' at the last part," Kaiba summed up.
Ishizu nodded. "However, over time, evil sorcerers learned how to control the powers of these creatures, and used them to aid them in their conquest to take over the world, nearly destroying it in the process. The Pharaoh had to step in with his disciples to contain this great evil, since the conflict got too much."
She walked over to the tablet on the left, looking at it grimly. "This tablet is the one that I want you to look at, Seto Kaiba. This depicts the main conflict in the war against the Pharaoh, where the leader of the sorcerers - the Pharaoh's greatest opponent - tried seizing the Pharaohs throne."
Kaiba frowned before walking over to the tablet Ishizu looked at. He turned his head to look at the tablet, looking at it in confusion before his eyes widened in shock.
"But...that's Yugi!" he exclaimed.
My eyes widened and I quickly walked over to look at the tablet, to see what he meant. On the tablet were two figures, facing each other in what appears to be a duel of sorts. Above each duellist was a single monster, battling for their master. On the right was a familiar face, his right arm reaching outwards as if stopping his opponent from doing something...and the Millennium Puzzle dangling from his neck.
"No way," I muttered, looking at Yugi's face with awe. "There's no way that can be Yugi...unless..."
My mind went into overdrive. If this wasn't Yugi, then it must be Yami. It looked exactly like him. He looked about the same age as him - mid twenties or so. His hair looked slightly taller than Yugi's hair. Plus, he seemed taller in the carving.
I looked above the figure of Yami, seeing his monster for the first proper time. Was that...?
"Is that the Dark Magician?" I asked, looking at the familiar spellcaster with a small frown.
"It is," Ishizu answered, nodding in confirmation. "In ancient times, the Dark Magician was the Pharaoh's most loyal monster, willing to protect him at all costs. It was said that it was once his old friend, and it vowed to be there for him when he needed help the most. But the fact is that this is only part of the reason why I brought you both here. Have a look at his opponent."
Both Kaiba and I turned our heads towards the Pharaoh's opponent. This guy held a rod of some description and he wore high priest robes. He looked on towards the Pharaoh with a look of strong determination. He too had his arm stretched outwards as if to repel his opponent away.
"Is that...you, Kaiba?" I asked in shock, as I took in the face of Yami's foe.
"That's insane!" Kaiba said nervously, also taking in his face. "That can't be possible!"
"If you're having doubts, look at the monster above," Ishizu said, pointing above Kaiba's look alike figure.
Kaiba and I looked at the monster above Ancient Kaiba, and when I looked at the monster, I felt my face go completely cold. It was a dragon that hovered above him, snarling as its wings were completely outstretched to the max. And the shocking thing was that I knew that Dragon all too well. I know because it was a dragon that I use in my most powerful deck.
"Blue Eyes..." I breathed out. "It's the Blue Eyes White Dragon, the one monster that both me and Kaiba use in our duels. This is incredible."
"But...how is that even possible?" Kaiba asked again. "That can't be me. How can that be me?"
I looked at Ishizu, indicating the tablet. "What's the story on this then?"
Ishizu looked at me. "It says here on the tablet that this Sorcerer marched into the Pharaoh's chamber and challenged the Pharaoh for the right to claim the throne, and that the Pharaoh fought back to protect his people and home from harm. Both of them summoned their most powerful monsters, fighting for the right of supremacy. However, the reason why this was one of the main conflicts in the war was because the whole world was at stake in this one duel. And now, five thousand years later, this exact duel is being played out once again."
She then turned to Kaiba. "I'm sensing doubt from you, Kaiba. You do not believe my story. Therefore, if you won't trust my words, I think you need to see for yourself. You, and Perseus here."
She raised her hand to touch her necklace, which started to glow brightly. I instantly backed away, wary of what she was going to do.
"What are you doing?" I demanded.
In answer, she said, "Showing you the past."
The whole room brightened, and me and Kaiba shielded our faces. As the light completely consumed the room, Kaiba and I screamed in terror as our sight was completely blinded.
========
When I opened my eyes, I saw that I was floating in midair. As I looked at my surroundings, I saw that I was in some sort of ancient temple, braziers lighting up the room. In the middle of what looked like an old fashioned duelling arena, was a staircase leading up to a raised platform with a throne on top of it.
"What in the world is this?" Kaiba said next to me, making me notice him immediately. "Is that a duel?"
I looked to where he was pointing, noticing that there was indeed a duel going on. On one side was a tall muscular man who was crouched down as if waiting to tackle someone. On the other side of the arena, was-
"It's you!" I gasped in surprise.
"No way!" Kaiba denied it, though he could see the whole thing played out.
Ancient Kaiba raised his golden staff. "I hereby declare a challenge to the Pharaoh. By the rites of tradition, duel me if you are not a coward." He turned towards several stone slabs that lay in front of him. "Magic powers, heed my cry. Release the monster trapped inside."
One of the slabs was raised and coming out of that slab was an astral monster that snarled at Ancient Kaiba's opponent.
"As the Pharaohs loyal servant, I'll defeat you traitor!" the other duellist proclaimed, one of his own slabs standing up, revealing the Winged Dragon Guardian Of The Fortress, which appeared and roared at Ancient Kaiba.
I was amazed at the whole scene in front of me. This looks exactly like how duelling was today. Even the monsters were a couple that I recognised in some of my earliest duels before.
"Attack, my monster," the Pharaohs serve the yelled. His dragon roared and shot a blast at Ancient Kaiba's monster, obliterating it. The blast got so bright, that I was once again blinded.
=========
"AH!" I screamed, sitting up quickly.
I looked frantically around, taking in the kneeling form of Kaiba who had a stunned look on his face. Ishizu crouched in front of me, extending a hand to me.
"I hope that it wasn't too much for you to handle," she said, looking apologetic. "Sorry if that came a little rough for you."
I looked at her wide eyed, pointing at her necklace. "What the hell is that thing?"
"My Millennium Necklace," she said. "It gives me the ability to look into the past and the future. It allowed me to show you a part of Kaiba's past."
I sat there, just staring at her extended hand, thinking, Something tells me that this is gonna be a long night.
I took her hand and stood up shakily. "Well, next time at least warn me completely when you use that thing next. I really don't like it when something like that happens to me."
Ishizu nodded. "Of course."
Kaiba groaned, as he struggled to stand up. I went over to him and quickly helped him up before he could protest. He shot me a glare, but he backed down when I glared back at him. Yeah, after all these years, I've forgotten that I still have my wolf stare.
"So, I saw the past?" Kaiba said, "with me against this...Pharaoh you speak of?"
Ishizu nodded. "The battle raged on with neither side backing down or showing mercy. They summoned monsters that were increasingly more powerful and vicious."
"Then who won?" I demanded. "I know for a fact that only one of them won, but who was it?"
"I have no idea, it doesn't say," Ishizu said, pointing to a worn out part of the tablet. "The winner of the duel was written here, but as you can see, the hieroglyphics have been worn away."
"Or broken off," I added, looking at the worn out part. "Look at the damage - it hasn't been worn away due to time or being buried underground, it's nothing to do with that. Someone broke that section off, like they didn't want anyone to know who the victor was."
Kaiba looked at me with curious eye. "You're smarter than you look."
"You have no idea how many people have said that to me over the years," I muttered. "But thanks anyway."
"What you say may be true," Ishizu said, looking at me. "Though we may not know who the real victor was, we can see glimpses of how this duel progressed in the beginning. Let us take another look into the past, using my Millennium Necklace."
"Oh, no you don't!" Kaiba said, backing away from Ishizu.
"I don't think we HAVE A CHOICE!" I shouted as the whole room was engulfed in the same bright flash of light as before.
==========
"I summon La Jinn The Mystical Genie Of The Lamp!" Ancient Kaiba screamed, as his green smoked genie appeared on the field.
I looked on with a pounding headache, the side effects of the Millennium Necklace already affecting me. Kaiba stood to my right, holding his head whilst watching the duel as well. He looked slightly pale like he was going to be sick.
"How can this be me?" he demanded. "Sure, he may use some of the monsters that I have in my deck, but the way he uses them aren't the same as the way I do them."
"Ishizu said this was in ancient times," I reminded him. "They didn't do things the way we do them today. Though I have to say that he acts like you. All tough guy and everything."
Kaiba looked like he wanted to argue, but decided against it when he looked back at the duel and saw that I was right. "I'll let you have that one, just this once."
I rolled my eyes, though I smiled a little.
As I watched on, I saw Ancient Kaiba's monster get destroyed by the newest monster owned by the Pharaoh's servant. Ancient Kaiba snarled as his monsters tablet got smashed into pieces. He turned towards the throne that was present in the room at the top of the stairs to the left of the arena.
"This duel isn't over, Pharaoh," he hissed. "I will emerge victorious and I will see to it that your reign will be over!"
I looked to what he was looking at. Sitting on the throne was what appeared to be...
"Is that Yugi?" Kaiba asked in shock.
Before I could answer, the whole room started to glow and with a groan, I knew that Ishizu was pulling us back to the present.
"Oh for the love of-!"
The whole room flared with light and I blacked out.
=========
I fell on my knees as soon as the world came back into reality. I was panting slightly, and my eyes were wide open in disbelief at what I witnessed in the vision. To my right, Kaiba grunted as he struggled to his feet, his hand on the wall to balance himself.
"That priest is a loser!" he shouted in annoyance to Ishizu, who continued to look at the tablet. "He keeps on losing every battle! There's no way you can compare him to me!"
"Kaiba's right," I said, panting as I too struggled to my feet, though it did prove slightly hard. "That guy you showed us was losing big time in that duel. What makes you think that's Kaiba when that ancient version of him was losing?"
"Because of the next monster he summoned," Ishizu said simply. She turned towards me and Kaiba. "If you don't believe, then maybe the third vision will help." As soon as she said that, her Necklace began to glow again.
I shouted out a grown of annoyance. "Oh, come on! Not AGAIN!"
"Stop it right now!" Kaiba screamed.
I looked to my left, noticing the astral form of my Black Luster Soldier who stood waiting instructions. When he caught me noticing, he stood to attention.
"Please, stop her! I can't take these visions anymore!" I pleaded.
"I can't stop them," my Chaos Soldier said quickly, "but I know who might be able to!"
My deck started to glow, and just before the room was lit up with light, the Dark Magician Of Chaos leapt out in front of me and held his sceptre outwards, creating a barrier of dark magic to shield me from the light. I covered my eyes with my arms, crying out as the light got too intense.
Soon, the light died down and the room was back to normal. I slowly lowered my arms down and opened my eyes, seeing the stunned look on Ishizu's face. She kept one hand on her Necklace. My two Chaos Monsters came up to both my sides and stood guard, waiting for any move Ishizu might pull against me.
"That's not possible," she said with narrowed eyes. "How is it that you've summoned two of the legendary Chaos Monsters?"
I looked at my two monsters, who glared at Ishizu. I knew she wouldn't make any move to harm me, so I placed a hand on my both their arms, getting their attention. They nodded in understanding, drawing their weapons back.
"Because we serve and protect our owner and commander," my Chaos Mage said, lowering his sceptre down. "He's a demigod, thus meaning that he holds quite a tremendous amount of energy in him - duelling energy to be precise. And when he needs help, the duelling energy flares up and we act upon helping him."
"The power of the Millennium Items have no effect on us and the one who owns us," Black Luster Soldier added. "You only managed to use your items power twice on Perseus because he didn't ask for help. If he didn't want to see those visions you've shown him so far, then we would've stopped you right there and then."
I stood up shakily, with the help of my Chaos Mage. "They say that in their master. They've chosen me for a reason, but I don't know what that reason is. I've tried asking them, but they don't know themselves. I need to know why exactly, and I'm suspecting that's what you're gonna explain why to me, aren't you?"
Ishizu still looked shocked at what she saw, though that slowly faded to a look of curious amazement. "I indeed know why they've chosen you. I'll explain it to you as soon as I return Kaiba to this workd."
Just then, I saw that Kaiba isn't in the room. I turned in a circle, taking in every part again, though I saw no sign of Kaiba. I frowned at Ishizu. "You're gonna bring him back now, right? Because those visions you've showed me so far left me feeling like I've just got hit by a freight train. I don't think Kaiba will appreciate that at all."
Ishizu actually chuckled. "He'll arrive in a few minutes. So I think now is the time to tell you - tell you how it is that you got a new deck, and why you now have the company of the most oldest monsters in Duel Monsters history. As you may have heard from Pegasus the other day, they choose you because in ancient times, these creatures formed an alliance to the Blue Eyes Dragons, proving to be very formidable in battle when they joined forces. However, what Pegasus didn't tell you was who the owner of the Chaos Monsters were."
I frowned, my curiousness rising. "You mean...the original owner?"
Ishizu nodded, waving her hand towards a third tablet to the left of the second tablet. I walked over to it, and my eyes widened at the scene that was carved into the stone.
It was an all out battle between a massive army of dark monsters: ghouls; zombies and skeletons with swords and armour, led by a massive entity covered in shadows and eyes that shot out of the blackness that covered it. On the opposite side of the tablet, facing this army single handily, was a warrior dressed in what appeared to be Greek armour, armed with a sword and shield. At the top of the tablet, stood a man in elegant robes, suggesting that he was a man of high power and respect. He had his arms spread open as if embracing the world in a hug.
Next to the armoured warrior stood his own small army of monsters - more specifically, the Chaos Monsters that now reside in my deck. On the right stood the Black Luster Soldier, his sword raised high like he was about to strike. Then there was a dragon next to him - the Chaos Emperor Dragon, throwing its head back as if roaring at the sky, its claws ready to slash. Floating next to the armoured warrior was the Dark Magician Of Chaos, his sceptre sparking with live energy, ready to banish any opponent who dared come close to him.
Apart from them, there were a whole array of chaotic monsters, all of them ready to fight to the death if they have to. But there was one creature that stood out from all the others. A dragon of very high regard and immense strength - is that...?
"Isn't that the Blue Eyes Shining Dragon?" I asked Ishizu in a confused voice, wondering how it could've been there.
Ishizu nodded. "That dragon is older than any dragon that has existed on earth. It's almost as old as the earth itself: watching over the stars and sky, ready to save its master at any moment. It was first created by the man you see at the head of the tablet."
I looked at the top, looking at the robed figure. "Who is he?"
"She has many names, but you know her...as Chaos."
My eyes narrowed. "Chaos? You mean...the-the deity that created the whole universe? The father - sorry - mother of the primordial gods? That's the one you're talking about? But...how can a Greek creating deity be connected to something that's Egyptian?"
Ishizu smiled, and then shook her head. "That's the thing people least expect about Chaos. They believe that men created everything, but it is women who have more knowledge and creativity than men do. And Chaos was the very personification of that statement. She created all. It doesn't matter which religion you come from - every belief; every bit of history; every legend - it all points directly to her as the creator of everything. Before the universe and this world was made, there was nothing but her realm. Nothing but the infinite darkness of Chaos."
"Yeah, I know what that's like," I said, my thoughts on the memory of me and Annabeth in Tartarus, when we had to completely douse ourselves in this death mist to hide us from monsters, when we stood on the ledge that led to Chaos itself. "I know what the Void looks like."
"Then you know powerful Chaos is," Ishizu said. "But...there is a theory...that Chaos herself...had a child."
"Of course she had a child," I sarcastically said. "She's had dozens of them. I met a couple of them in person, and let me tell ya' - not nice company."
Ishizu chuckled. "Not them. I meant that she had a mortal child."
My eyes frowned for just a few seconds. Then they got wider by what she actually meant. "You mean...she had a...a demigod child?"
Ishizu nodded. "Precisely. And if you want to know who, take a look at the tablet. He's the one controlling the Chaos Monsters and the Blue Eyes Shining Dragon after all."
I turned towards the figure in the carving, the one in the Greek armour. "Him? Who was he?"
"That was the only demigod child of Chaos in recorded history. The only demigod child of a primordial goddess. The first and only of his kind. That, Perseus Jackson, was Tobias - your ancestor."
===========
I looked at Ishizu with an emotionless face, though on the inside I was feeling a cross between confusion and shock. And I thought that I couldn't get anymore shocked than before.
I have an ancient ancestor from Ancient Egypt?! I thought incredulously to myself. How-ho-HOW?! Okay, take a breather Percy. You need to go down. OH, who am I kidding?! This is crazy!
"A lot to take in, isn't it?" Ishizu said, an amused look on her face. "I know what that feels like. When I first learnt that children of the gods do indeed live amongst us, I was shocked. But then I realised that they didn't want to show themselves to anyone, for fear of discovery and that people would call them mad. That's why I investigated you, out of every possible person who could be one. That's why I saw you in the future my Necklace predicts."
I continued looking in shock. "That Necklace...shows the future?"
"One possible future," she admitted. "That is still yet to come. And don't worry about your true identity - your secret is safe with me."
I nodded my appreciation, before turning to the tablet again, looking at the carving of Tobias. "So this is my ancestor? How far back is this?"
"Little over five thousand years ago," Ishizu said. "That makes your family older than your friend, Frank Zhang. Your ancestry spans the years of many heroes and heroines that lived before you, many of which you may of heard of. Names such as Briseis; Perseus; Alexander the Great - names that have lived on in your family for generations. You are descended from all those heroes, but this hero," she pointed to the carving of Tobias, "was the oldest of your ancestors."
I turned towards the carving again. "What made this one the most important though?"
"He was the only one of his kind: a child of a primordial and a mortal. There's never been any other. That made him special, and very powerful. If Zeus heard about what Tobias really was, he would've got rid of him by any means necessary. However, Tobias died in his own way."
I looked at the entity that Tobias was facing: that towering monster, bathed in shadows and surrounded by fiendish monsters and demons. "He died fighting this creature. A creature that was trying to destroy everything. Tobias tried to stop him and died trying."
"His sacrifice gave the people of the Pharaoh's kingdom enough time evacuate and hide. His wife and daughter were among those who escaped the kingdom. As a last wish, he ordered his monsters - the gifts and friends he received from his mother Chaos - to look after his family for all eternity. He then fused with the Shining Dragon, and sought out one last blow against this evil entity. He did so, and managed to weaken the monster dramatically in power."
Ishizu nodded towards the tablet. "This tablet is the last piece of evidence to prove Tobias's existence and his noble sacrifice. Without this, there wouldn't even be the memory of him. His family continued on through the ages, generations of his family siring heroic demigod warriors...until it passed onto you."
I frowned. "But...I'm just one demigod. How can I be that important. Yeah, I helped save the world so many times, but that doesn't mean that I'm a hero. That was just me doing the right thing. The real heroes are the ones who died in those wars, the ones who's lives meant nothing to the gods of Olympus."
"And that's why you really are Tobias's descendant," Ishizu said with a small smile. "It says on the tablet that he never cared once about glory, not even giving it a second thought. He says here that he only cared for his family and friends. That's how I know you're of his family. You act like him. Plus, you are now in control of some of the most mightiest monsters that roamed the earth."
I looked behind me, seeing how my Chaos Mage and Soldier stood guard over me, like it was something that they were use to. If what Ishizu said was true, then these guys were older than me and were once Tobias's monsters.
"And that's why I need your help," Ishizu said now in a almost pleading voice.
I turned to face her, wondering what she wanted. "Why? What's wrong?"
Before she spoke, her Necklace began to glow. She looked down, sighing. "Ah, that would be Kaiba returning to the present right now. I will tell you when he gets here."
Suddenly, a bright flash of light appeared and Kaiba materialised out of thin air, on his knees and hands and looking pale as hell. He groaned as he struggled to stand up, but he only managed to fall on his knees again. I walked over to him and extended my hand. He took it without question, and I pulled him to his feet.
"Where were you?" he panted.
"I was here," I said, giving Ishizu a knowing look. "I wasn't pulled in for some reason. Why, what did you see?"
"My ancient self won," Kaiba said, shock and a little awe in his voice. "He summoned the Blue Eyes White Dragon and won."
"Now are you convinced, Kaiba?" Ishizu asked. "As I've said before, history is destined to repeat itself. It's not just coincidence that Yugi is your greatest opponent. You two have battled in the ancient past. It was destiny that you and Yugi duelled, and it's destined that you two will battle again."
Kaiba struggled to take this all in. Finally, he shook his eyes, picked his briefcase up and turned away from the tablet. "Thanks for the lecture, but I make my own destiny and I do what I want to do."
I felt a little disappointment towards Kaiba, but then again who was I to judge? After all, I was still struggling to take in the fact that I'm descended from a demigod son of Chaos.
I looked at the tablet depicting Kaiba's duel with Yami. Then I noticed something at the top - three stone carvings of three monsters.
"Kaiba, wait," I said quickly
He turned around, looking at me in question.
"Ishizu, aren't those the monsters that you wanted to show Kaiba?" I asked the Egyptian woman. "The one thing that convinced him to come?"
"Ah yes," she said. "I knew he wanted powerful monsters, the Duel Monsters card that surpass the power of Exodia. He was so caught in everything that happened that he failed to see that they were in front of his eyes the whole time."
"What?" Kaiba finally turned around to look at the tablet.
"They're at the top of the tablet," I pointed.
He looked at the carvings with surprise. Even when I looked at them, I was a little amazed by what I saw. Three separate monsters that looked slightly menacing but yet divine and powerful.
On the bottom right was what appeared to be a demon with a stone like appearance, muscles that showed it's superior strength and hardness. It had fists that looked as if it could destroy several mountains and it's face brought doom to all those that opposed it.
At the top of the triangle was a snake like dragon with two sets of mouths, it's wings razor sharp as well as it's claws and teeth. It's body was completely long like one of the drakons I fought back in New York, and it looked like it was regarding the world around it with a blazing look.
On the bottom left of the triangle was what appeared to be a bird made completely out of fire, though I could make out what appeared to be an eagles head and it's wings. It's claws were also razor sharp it looked more majestic than the other two carvings of the other monsters.
"These were the most feared monsters in all history," Ishizu said. "Obelisk The Tormentor, Slifer The Sky Dragon, The Winged Dragon Of Ra - control one and you can destroy a million armies. Wield all three, and the planet itself will quake in fear."
"So they're basically Titans in their own way," I said, looking at each monster. "That's incredible. I mean, I'm not a big fan of Titans, but seeing these are awesome."
"And Pegasus turned them into cards?" Kaiba demanded. "That can't be true. If they were real, why didn't he use them against me when I duelled him?"
"Because they nearly overwhelmed him with their powers," Ishizu said. "They threatened to destroy him, when he woke them up from their slumber. You can't fathom the ancient powers they possess. It was too powerful for Pegasus to control. And it frightened him."
Pegasus being scared of monsters like these...damn, if thats true, no wonder they weren't released to the world. If Pegasus couldn't even control these monsters, what chance did anyone have?
"What did he do with the cards?" Kaiba then asked. "I can't ask Pegasus directly, since he's dropped off the face of the earth. In fact, I have no idea where he is at the present moment."
"He was in Domino City a couple days ago," I said, remembering the duel I had against. "He challenged me to a duel - which I won - and gave me permission to keep the Blue Eyes Deck."
"Pegasus gave me the God Cards for safe keeping," Ishizu explained. "He knew that if the cards fell into the wrong hands, they would bring about the end of the world. So I had them buried in separate locations around the world just to make sure that they weren't swiped. However, they were recently found and were taken. I've got to retrieve them at all costs, so that I can hide them again."
"So, if Pegasus doesn't have the God Cards, then who has?" Kaiba asked in confusion.
"The Rare Hunters," Ishizu said grimly. "They're an underground set of elite duellists. The rob and sell rare and valuable cards on the black market for enormous profits, though they keep the most powerful cards for themselves to create powerful and dangerous decks that destroy all opposition. They operate in the shadows, so they're nearly impossible to find."
"So, what you're basically saying is that you want Kaiba to bait them out?" I asked.
"And you if you can," she nodded. "This plan involves you two working together. I just know it."
My mind started going into overdrive over the many ideas that formed in my head, until I finally realised what Ishizu was implying. I turned to Kaiba with a smirk. "Ha ha ha, she's more crafty than I thought. I see where she's going with this."
Kaiba frowned in confusion. "What is she saying?"
"If you were to start a Duel Monsters tournament, your reputation would attract all sorts of duellists from around the world. That would make it the most concentrated income of rare and precious cards in history. And who among all these duellists would come along?" I asked him.
Kaiba nodded along with the story, his own smile forming. "It's a trap. These Hunters wouldn't resist such tempting bait. If they come along, then that mean that they'll bring the Egyptian God Cards. I'm liking this plan already."
"Of course you would," I muttered, rolling my eyes sarcastically. "You would do anything to get your hands on powerful cards such as these God Cards."
Ishizu smiled at my sarcastic comment, then she walked up to Kaiba, reaching into one of her pockets and pulling out a card. "One last thing before you go. You may need this."
Kaiba took the card, turning it over to see what it was. When he saw the picture, he gasped. "Can it be? There's no way! It's Obelisk The Tormentor!"
"SAY WHAT?!" I exclaimed, taking the card from Kaiba and staring at it.
It was a dark blue coloured card, with the image of a tall, muscular, statue-like demon with light blue stone skin. Its head was like a crown styled up into three separate spikes, with a dark blue sphere in the centre of its forehead. It's chest and arms were heavily muscled and it's claw-like hands were clenched into tight fists.
"I thought that all the God Cards were stolen?" I demanded in shock.
"I managed to retrieve Obelisk in time," Ishizu said. "You may borrow it during the tournament, Seto Kaiba, but I expect you to return it to me when you are done with it."
Kaiba gave her a triumphant smile, then he reached over to take Obelisk back from me, but I immediately leaned my arm backwards out of his reach. He frowned.
"Don't worry, Ishizu," I said, giving Kaiba a stern look whilst speaking. "I'll make sure that Kaiba will return the card back to you when he's done. Because I don't like it when people steal from others."
I extended the God Card outwards to Kaiba. He scowled before taking the card and placing it into his deck, which he had with him just in case.
Before we left, I took one look back at Ishizu who nodded to me before turning around to face the tablets. I left that room thinking that there was more to this than she let on. I just hope that it didn't meant another prophecy and hopefully not another war between any enemy of the gods...
