Chapter 9 - Taming Trolls

Percy was just about to kill something when Professor Quirrel came sprinting into the hall, waving his arms like a windmill, and face full of terror cried at the top of his lugs "TROLL! TROLL! IN THE DUNGEONS! — Thought you ought to know."

He then sank to the floor in a dead faint.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was an uproar. It took several blue firecrackers exploding from the end of Professor Dumbledore's wand to bring silence.
Perfects," he announced, "lead your Houses back to the dormitories immediately!"
The female Gryffindor prefect stood up taking charge "Follow me! Please everyone stick together."
"How could a troll get in?" Harry asked as they climbed the stairs
"Don't ask me, they're supposed to be stupid," said Ron
"Maybe Peeves let it in for a Halloween joke," said Layla "If so he really outdid himself."
They passed several different groups hurrying in different directions. As they made their way through confused Hufflepuffs, Percy suddenly gasped.
"Hermione, she doesn't know," Percy said "We have to go find her"
"Yeah your right," said Layla "I need to make things up with her."
Ron still seemed hesitant "Oh, all right."
The four hurried off toward the girl's bathroom with Layla leading. They had just turned the corner when they heard quick footsteps behind them. "It's Snape," Percy hissed pulling them behind a large stone griffin.
"What is he doing?" Harry whispered. "Why isn't he down in the dungeons with the rest of the teachers."
Quietly as possible, they crept along the next corridor after Snape's fading footsteps.
"He's heading off to the third floor," Layla said then to herself "What is he up to?"
Ron pinched his nose "Uhh can you smell that?"
Percy sniffed and a nasty stench reached his nose, as bad as those flesh eating horses that he had to clean forever ago.
And then they heard it a low grunting, and shuffling steps of gigantic feet. Percy pointed at the end of the passage to the left, something huge was moving towards them. "Guys I think we found it," he whispered
It was an ugly sight. 12 feet tall, its skin was a dull green-gray, its lumpy body like a boulder with its small bald head. It had short legs as thick as three trunks. Sure Percy had seen much much worse but this thing was disgusting. He wondered what the other were thinking. It had a wooden club, which dragged along the floor because its arms were too long.
"Guys we need to hurry," Layla said shaking Harry's sholder "It's going to the girl's bathroom. Which means..."
"Hermione!" they said together
They sprinted towards the bathroom "Come on Ron," Harry said twisting his neck.
Percy could see the bathroom with the door broken into pieces that's when they heard a high, petrified scream. "No, shit, shit" Layla cursed
Percy and Layla jumped over half a door and ran inside.
Hermione was shrinking against the wall opposite. Percy pulled out Riptide, flicked off the cap, and it turned into his sword. He swung it around experimentally, he hadn't used it in a long time and it felt good.
"Woah," Layla said taking a step back "Where did you get that?"
"Hey, you big fat lump! Over here!" Percy yelled at the troll who stopped a few feet away from Hermione. "Try to confuse it," he yelled back
Percy charged in with Riptide, he went for a slash on its leg but instead, the troll whipped his club and knocked the sword right out of Percy's hand. "Fuck." Percy cursed himself he was rusty he couldn't even get one cut on this stupid thing. Now what was he supposed to do?
"Oy, pea-brain!" yelled Layla from the other side of the chamber, she threw a metal pipe at it. It turned its head toward Layla, giving Percy time to run around it.
"Percy" Hermione shrieked
"Come on, run, run!" Percy exclaimed at Hermione, trying to get her to the door, but she couldn't move, she was still flat against the wall, her mouth open with terror. "Come on!" Percy tried aging. This time she got up and slowly made her way to Percy.
Percy had to do something, the troll roared again and started towards Layla, Ron, and Harry who were running out of things to throw at it. He pulled out his wand pointing it at the troll's head and recalled a spell Hermionie taught him.
"Aqua Eructo," Percy said chaneling the power casting a powerful jet of water straight at the back of its head causing it to stumble.
Then Harry did something incredibly brave and stupid. He jumped on the troll's neck when it was bent over. And managed to fasten his arms around the troll's neck.
What was Harry thinking when he did that? Now Percy couldn't use any more spells on the troll. He didn't want to hurt Harry. The troll was still recovering and didn't notice Harry latched on to him. Percy led Hermione to the door and got all of them grouped.
The troll didn't feel Harry hanging but it did when Harry stuck his wand up its nose. It howled in pain, twisting and flailing its club. Harry was hanging on to dear life sooner or later the troll was going to rip him off and whack him with the club.
Hermione had sunk to the floor in fright Layla trying her best to comfort her. Percy felt his pen back in his pocket he had to do something, so he uncapped it.
But Ron had other plans he pulled out his wand not knowing what to do he cried the first spell that came to his mind "Wingardium Laviosa!"
The club flew suddenly out of the troll's hand, rose high, high up into the air, turned slowly -- and dropped with a nasty crack, onto its owner's head. The troll swayed on the spot and then fell faceplanting on the floor.
Percy put his pen away, hoping they wouldn't ask questions about it.
Harry got to his feet. He was shaking and out of breath. Ron stood there staring at his wand and what he had done.
  Layla spoke first "Is - is it dead?"
"I don't think so," said Harry "I think it's just been knocked out." He bent down and pulled his wand out of the troll's nose. It was covered in what looked like lumpy gray glue. "Urgh troll boogers."
Percy checked if everyone was ok, somehow they managed to get out of that without a single scratch.
A sudden slamming and loud footsteps made the five of them look up. They hadn't realized the noise they had been making, of course, someone would hear the troll crash. Professor McGonagall had come bursting into the room, followed by Snape, and Quirrell. Quirrell took one look at the troll and sat down on a toilet, clutching his heart.
What a loser Percy thought. That thought quickly vanished when he saw Professor McGonagall's face. She was looking at Percy, Layla, Harry, and Ron. He had never seen her look so angry. Her lips were white.
"What on earth were you thinking?" said Professor McGonagall "You're lucky you weren't killed. Why aren't you in your dormitory?" "
"Hm I'm not surprised Potter is here as well as Jackson, always causing trouble," Snape spoke in his slick voice.
He gave both of them a swift, piercing look. Percy looked right back at him.
"Please, Professor McGonagall they were looking for me."
"Miss Granger!"
Hermione had managed to get to her feet finally "I went looking for the troll because I -- I thought I could deal with it on my own -- you know, because I've read all about them."
Percy couldn't just let her take the fall "No wait..."
"Percy, please thank you," said Hermione "If they hadn't found me, I'd be dead now. Percy shot a jet of water at the troll, Harry stuck his wand up its nose, and Ron knocked it out with its own club. They didn't have time to get anyone. It was about to finish me off when they arrived."
Layla spoke up "Wait I throw stuff at it."
Hermione smiled "Yes, and Layla threw metal pipes at it."
"Well in that case..." said Professor McGonagall, staring at them, "Miss Granger, you foolish girl, how could you think of tackling a mountain troll on your own?"
Hermione hung her head. Percy couldn't believe she was doing this. Hermione was the last person to break the rules, here she was pretending she had, to get them out of trouble.
"Miss Granger, Five points will be taken from Gryffindor for this," said Professor McGonagall "I'm very disappointed in you. If you're not hurt at all, you'd better be off to Gryffindor Tower."
Hermione left.
Professor McGonagall turned to the four of them "Jackson, Potter, Weasley, and Miss Adams. I still say that you were lucky, but not many first-years could take on a full-grown mountain troll. You each win Gryffindor five points. Professor Dumbledore will be informed of this. You may go."
They started to walk off when Professor McGonagall spoke aging "Jackson I want to talk to you in private, you three go to the Common Room."
Layla opened her mouth to say something but Percy cut her off "I'll be fine. You guys go."
Percy followed behind the Professor not talking until they got to her office where they sat down just like they did the first time all those months ago.
"I'm very disappointed in you" Professor McGonagall started " I don't care who your father is that does not give you any excuse to run off to fight a troll. And to bring other students with you is inexcusable."
"But Hermione would have died," said Percy
"Oh cut that, I know she lied to get you out of trouble." She said, "Let's be serious Miss Granger would never do such a thing."
Dang, maybe teachers so know everything. But why was she so mad at him? Nobody got hurt.
"She said that you cast a water spell. Tell me what spell?" Professor McGonagall asked calming down a little
"Aqua Eructo"
That was Percy's favorite spell he learned that he could control the intensity of the water flow that shoots out of his wand, it could be a thin fountain or a powerful jet.
"Ah, yes that is quite an advanced spell for a first year. I'm assuming that your blood helps you with it."
"Yeah, any spell water related is a lot easier for me."
"Hmh, I don't want to see you getting into any more trouble. If you do you will be sent back to America. You may go now."
Can she do that? "I don't think you can do that," said Percy standing up and getting ready to leave.
"Oh, and why not?"
"Cause you can't"
Percy walked out of the door tired of her. She was so nice to him before what changed all of a sudden now? He reached the portrait of the Fat Lady.
"Pig snout," he said and entered. In there he saw his four friends eating together chatting like they had been friends for the whole time. He grabbed a plate of food and joined them.
From that moment on their group had expanded to five. There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve foot mountain troll is one of them.
