Chapter 8 - Two Months Later
Ya'll are the best people in the world
Today was an interesting day Percy thought, as he lay awake till midnight with Harry and Ron. Listening to Dean and Seamus fall asleep, Neville still wasn't back from the hospital wing.
Percy wondered if he should go with them to the dual with Malfoy, on the one hand, his job was to protect Harry on the other he was exhausted from school the last couple of days. All of his classes ramped up, and he was given homework due for the next class.
"Half past eleven," Ron muttered at last, "we'd better go"
"You coming Perce?" Harry whispered to him as he got up from bed
"Umm, I don't think so," Percy whispered "I will walk down with you guys though. Just in case this is the last time I see my friends."
They pulled on their robes and picked up their wands, Percy also got his pen, and crept across to the spiral staircase, and into the Gryffindor common room. The fireplace glowed in the dark casting shadows throughout the room.
They made it halfway across the room when a voice spoke from the chair nearest to them, "I can't believe you're going to do this, Harry."
A lamp flicked on. It was Hermione Granger, wearing a pink bathrobe and a frown.
"You," said Ron furiously. "Go back to bed!"
Then another voice came from the girl's staircase " Hermione did you really wait till I fell asleep to come down here."
"I can't let them make a fool of Gryffindor, they lose all our points, and I don't want Slytherin to win the house cup" Hermione hissed
"Look Hermione," Layla said coming closer "I go with them and make sure nothing bad happens." Then she walked closer to the boys in a quiet voice so that Hermione couldn't hear said "I would never miss a chance to humiliate Draco."
"Never" Ron whispered
"But, but, you'll lose all the points I got from Professor McGonagall for knowing about Switching Spells."
"Oh go away." Ron snapped
"Hermione, if it makes you feel any better I'm not going either," Percy said
"You'r not?" Layla asked, "Why not?"
Percy shrugged "Tried, school's hard you know"
Hermionie face lit up "Oh oh I could help you with your homework, I already completed all of mine."
Percy's face looked of horror "You guys got room for one more?" he said yawning "Ah never mind I'll just wait here until you come back. Sleeping" He added at the end to Hermione
The three walked through the portrait hole into the dark.
Percy sat down on a sofa across from Hermione. Who was now staring at a book on her lap flipping through the pages.
Percy closed his eyes trying to fall asleep, but he didn't. He lay across on the sofa trying to fall asleep, but he didn't. Frustrated he moved so his feet were at the top of the couch and his head was hovering over the floor, but he still couldn't fall asleep.
"Uh, what are you doing?" Hermione asked
"Trying to sleep"
"Huh, and you think that will help you? You see when I have trouble falling asleep I think about something that calms me down, like reading a nice book in my bedroom."
"Hmm I could do that," Percy said thinking about the ocean and its soft waves. He closed his eyes picturing himself at Montauk beach as the sun set making the sky pink orange. He was drifting off but something was stopping him. He could feel Hermione staring at him.
He opened one eye at Hermionie and said "What?"
"Oh sorry, it's just that I was wondering what you were thinking that calmed you down?"
"The beach with small soft waves, at sunset, and listening to music."
"That sounds nice."
"It was, till some girl came along whose name rhymes with Himionie."
Hermione giggled "I have been called lots of names but that's the first time I heard that."
"Really, I feel like it's kinda obvious."
"I guess not," she said "How's it like in America?"
She does ask a lot of questions, teachers must love her. Percy didn't mind right now.
"Uh well I guess it's good, I don't have anything else to compare to so I don't know."
"Yeah, I understand, I have never been out of England, I've always wanted to go to Greece, I have heard there's a library there with papers of ancient wizards."
Percy's been to Greece, though it wasn't a fun way to visit for the first time. "You know actually I'm half Greek, my dad's from there."
"That's so cool. I'm assuming you've never been there then."
"Yeah never"
This was awkward now neither of them had spoken in what felt like hours. Should he say something to make it less awkward or would that make it more weird?
"Whatcha reading?" he asked hoping to start a conversation
She said without looking up "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander."
"Ha what are there any water beasts in there?" he said as a joke
"Yes actually there are lots, I'm reading about Grindylows right now"
She told him all about these Grindylows and many other water creatures. By the end, Percy learned more than he had his whole time at Hogwarts. At around 30 after 12, the others came back bursting through the portrait their robes hanging off their shoulders and their flushed, sweaty faces.
"What happened to you guys? You look like a three-headed dog chased you through the school." Percy said thinking about Cerberus. He hadn't seen him in a long time, how was he doing, he hoped someone was playing fetch with him.
"WE WHERE CHASHED BY A THREE HEADED DOG," Ron said "What do they think they're doing, keeping a thing like that looked up in a school?"
They sat down on the couch except for Nevile who looked like he would never talk aging. Layla, Harry, and Ron told them what happened on their light night adventure.
"I told you I told you," said Hermione crossing her arms
"You guys should have been there it was awesome," said Layla "Did you see what the dog was standing on though?"
"The floor?" Harry suggested, "I wasn't looking at its feet, I was too busy with its heads."
"No, not the floor. It was standing on a trapdoor, which means that it's guarding something" Layla said looking pleased with herself.
Hermione stood up, glaring at them
"I hope you are pleased with yourselves. You could have all been killed - or worse, expelled. Layla, I thought you were going to keep it under control. Now, if you don't mind. I'm going to bed."
"Ah yes I would much rather be expelled than killed," Layla said to Hermione back
"So this dog is guarding a trapdoor, what do think it's guarding?" Percy asked, "Is it the thing that Hargid took from Gringots, Harry?"
"Yeah that's what I'm thinking," Harry said in a low voice
Percy would have to go to see this knock of Cerberus later with them. And to check out the trapdoor that Layla talked about.
Malfoy couldn't believe his eyes when he saw that Harry and Ron were still at Hogwarts the next day, looking tired but perfectly cheerful. Percy talked with Harry and Ron about the package that Hagrid took out. Nevile didn't seem interested in this at all just as long he never saw the dog again. Hermione was now refusing to speak to Harry and Ron, which they liked, but for Percy, it sucked as he just got close to her that night. She wasn't that bad once you get to know her.
As the owls flooded into the Great Hall, everyone's attention was caught at once by a long, thin package carried by six owls. The owls came down in front of Harry and dropped the package in front of Harry. As the owls went back up one of them dropped something right on Percy's hair.
"Ha, what are the chances of that" Layla pointing at the white stuff on his hair.
"Very likely apparently," Percy said Why Athena why?
Percy saw Harry open the letter and pull out a card, then he handed it to Ron, and both of them started to smile like crazy.
"Harry got a Nimbus Two Thousand!" Ron said moaned enviously. "I've never even touched one."
"Percy, we're going to our dorm to open, want to come with?" Harry said
"Nah you guys go." The two left the hall quickly
"What was that about?" Layla asked with Hermione looking in
"Harry got a broomstick, I think he said it's a Nimbus Two thousand or something like that," Percy said trying to get the rest of the poop out of his hair.
"I heard that you and Hermione are friends now" whispered Layla "That good"
"You still got a bit left up there," said a new girl sitting across from Layla making a discussing face.
"Uh, who are you?" Percy asked he had never seen her before which was odd cause she was HOT. Annabeth was way hotter than her but this new girl was hot she had the same blonde hair as Annabeth, but different eyes.
"I'm Lauren Hughes you probably haven't seen me through I have been hanging with the older kids."
"Yeah she's in the same dorm as me," said Layla "We're good friends"
"I didn't know that?" Hermione said
Perhaps it was because Percy had nothing to but he's been at Hogwarts for 2 months already and it couldn't have gone slower. Percy kept his promise to Annabeth by writing to her once a week. When Harry was gone for Quditich practice every evening it was awkward when he and Ron were without Harry. So Percy would spend his time with the girls. Surprisingly he was mostly with Hermione rather than Layla. Layla and Hermione and a small fallout since Layla became friends with Lauren Hughes.
Lauren is an interesting person in the beginning she flirted with him all the time. Sometimes he thinks that Ron is only friends with him because of Lauren. But once Percy got past all the flirting Lauren was pretty nice and fun to be with.
Hermione became one of Percy's of his best friends. The only problem was that nobody else liked her at all. Percy didn't care he learned so much by just being with her and he also had a lot of fun. They quickly discovered that Percy was good at water magic, as Hecalte said. He had mastered some advanced water spells according to Hermione, some of them she couldn't do herself. That made her skeptical but Percy told her it was cause he loved the water. He still didn't think she fully believed him.
On Halloween morning they woke to the delicious smell of baking pumpkin wafting through the corridors. Even better Professor Flitwick announced in Charms that they were going to make objects fly today. Percy couldn't wait, for the number of pranks he could pull off with that spell, Hogworts wouldn't know what hit it.
They were enjoying their Halloween breakfast and Percy noticed someone wasn't with them "Where's Hermione?" he asked Layla
"Huh, what, why would I know" she blurted going back to eating
Ok, that was weird. Percy did hear some shouting early in the morning today from the common room. He didn't think much about it.
Percy wasn't able to perfect Wingardium Laviosa in class today, no matter he would just ask Hermione to teach him. Harry, Ron, and he were walking into the Great Hall for the Halloween feast. On their way they overheard Parvati Patil telling her friend Lavender that Hermione was crying in the girl's bathroom and wanted to be left alone. Ron was awkward when they heard this. Percy wanted to go see if she was okay but if she wanted to be alone then he would have to honor that. A moment later when they entered the Great Hall, where the magical Halloween decorations and food put Hermione out of their mind.
A thousand live bats fluttered from the walls and ceiling while a thousand more swooped over the tables in low black clouds, making the candles in the pumpkins stutter. The feast appeared suddenly on the golden plates.
"Did you guys hear about Hermione?" asked Lauren
"Yeah, I still don't know how it happened," Percy said
"It's kinda my fault" Layla started her voice shaking "This morning I made fun of her that she has no friends and nobody likes her."
"Wait what," Percy said getting mad at Layla
"I know I feel so bad"
"Oh gods, oh that bad" Ron said face turning to the shade of the pumpkins "Well um after charms class today I also said the same thing and she heard me."
Harry added "And I saw her crying after Ron said that. Also just want you to know I didn't say anything, so you don't need to kill me."
"What!" Percy said ignoring Harry's last comment "So you both told her on the same day that nobody likes her and she has no friends"
"Look I know that's bad and I do feel bad but it's not like isn't true," Lauren said "Nobody can stand her," she said shrugging her shoulders.
Percy was just about to kill something when Professor Quirrel came sprinting into the hall, waving his arms like a windmill, and face full of terror cried at the top of his lugs "TROLL! TROLL! IN THE DUNGEONS! — Thought you ought to know."
He then sank to the floor in a dead faint.
