Chapter 16 - Long Nights

This took many long nights to write

Percy was sitting on the couch with the gang. He returned from the mysterious room a while ago and was in shock. From the moment, his mom told him about her pregnancy, all those days ago, he had been preparing himself to be the best big brother in the whole world. Now he is the worst brother possible.

"What are we waiting for, again?" Percy asked

"For Layla," said Harry "We just went over this."

"Oh, yeah I forgot,"

"Are you alright," asked Hermione "You look stressed."

"I'm fine," Percy said then he yawned stretching his arms to the sky "Just - tired,"

The clock on the wall had just chimed midnight and Percy's eyes were having trouble staying open. Just then the Portrait door flipped open and came in a limping Layla.

"Hagrid needs to get some help!"

"What did he do this time?" Ron asked

"Norbert bit my foot and Hagrid said it was my fault," Layla complained plopping down on the couch "I'm so done with all this,"

"Well you're in luck," Harry said waving a piece of paper in his hand "I just got Charlie's answer."

Everyone but Percy put their heads together to read the note. Percy feeling left out took out his pen and flipped it between his fingers. Layla was right he thought, he was so done with this school year.

Once they finished reading the letter, they looked at each other, they meant everyone but Percy.

"We've got the invisibility clock," said Harry "It shouldn't be too hard - I think the cloak's big enough to cover us and Norbert."

"No way the cloak can't cover more than two people and Norbert," said Layla "I shouldn't go my limp will only slow you guys down."

"Ok, then," said Harry turning to Hermione and Ron, "It's just us then."

"Dude, you know right here," Percy said rolling his eyes

"Oh yeah," Harry said "Forgot you were here,"

"I think Ron should go," said Layla "It is his brother after all,"

"Yeah, and I haven't seen him in ages,"

"And it is my cloak," said Harry "So I should go."

"Ok," said Hermione "Harry and Ron will go on Saturday night and put an end to all this,"

They all nodded in agreement. Calling it for the night they headed off to their beds.

Percy felt left out today because he missed his sister's birth, and then his friends left him out of the discussion. Was it cause he couldn't read, so they thought he was stupid and wouldn't know what to do? Annabeth always told him he was best when it came to strategies.

He took the picture of Estella and put it on his nightstand so that when he woke up she would be the first thing he seas.

By the next morning, Percy had pushed away his thoughts from last night. He remembered that they were his friends and wouldn't think that of him.

Layla on the other hand was in worse shape her bitten foot had swollen to twice the size and had turned to a nasty shade of green. They didn't know if it was safe to go to Madam Pomfrey, would she recognize a dragon bite? But they had no choice.

Percy and Ron supported Layla on each side as she hopped to the hospital wing on one foot.

later that day Percy and Hermione rushed up after class to find Layla in an even worse condition in bed.

"It's not just my foot," she whispered "My whole body feels like it's on fire. I told Madam Pomfrey it was a dog bite, but I don't think she believed me."

Percy wished he could give her some ambrosia and nectar, but it would set her body on fire. Or would it? How has Percy not thought of this before could witches and wizards eat godly food? Well, it's not like he could try it out, he doesn't have any of it.

"But that's not the worst part," Layla continued "Draco said he would tell Madam Pomfrey what bit me if I don't tell him what we're doing with Norbert. But-"

They didn't get to hear the rest. Madam Pomfrey came over at that moment and made them leave, saying Layla needed sleep.

"We've got to tell," Percy said rushing off

"Wait, Perce let's think about this," Hermione called from behind "She was just about to tell us something. What if she told Malfoy a lie."

"So, what if she didn't? We have to tell Harry and Ron to call it off."

"We can't. It's too late to change the plan now. We don't have the time to send another owl to Charlie and this could be our only chance to get rid of Norbert. They'll have to risk it. Knowing them will probably like the risk,"

They got back to Harry and Ron and told them there might be a chance the Malfoy knew about the plan.

"We do have the invisibility cloak, which Malfoy doesn't know about," Harry said

"Yeah and it will make it more fun," Ron added

Saturday night came and Percy and Hermione said goodbye to Harry and Ron, as they went out on their quest.

"Have you finished Professor McGonagall's essay yet?" Hermione asked

"Hermione we have been here for seven months," Percy said "What do you think?"

"Right, I'm going to work on mine then,"

Percy sat in the corner of the room waving his wand around and saying random words, seeing if he could make a new spell.

"Percy I'm trying to work here," Hermione complained

"Sorry," said Percy "Hey do you think there a spell that could get rid of my dyslexia?"

"Mhm, there very well could be. I can research to find out if you want me to?"

"That would be great, Mione."

Hermione went back to working on her essay, while Percy went back to his wand. For the second time this week, he has stayed up till midnight. Board he stood up and with his wand, he cast an orb of water around him in the middle of the common room.

"Hermione, look," he called from inside of orb

"That's nice Percy," she said

Percy let go of the orb of water letting it fall, but making sure it didn't touch him so Hermione wouldn't get suspicious.

"Ugh, now you just soaked all the furniture."

"Sorry, don't you know a spell to dry it all up," he said. He could easily dry it in seconds with his powers. It would be so much easier if he could just tell them about everything.

"Yeah, I read it about somewhere," Hermione said "I just - can't remember what it is. Why can't I remember," she said rubbing her forehead.

He could just point his wand at the wand and say something to make it look like the spell did it. He thought of the Latin word for dry, 'sicco' he remembered from some Camp Jupiter's Latin class.

He pointed his wand at the dark floor and said, "Sicco." Instantly the area around it becomes lighter. He didn't even need to use his powers. He did the same to the single sofa making it dry too. He was surprised it worked so well, could he do that with other words?

"What are you saying?" Hermione asked curiously "How do you know that spell?"

"It's Latin for, dry," Percy said shrugging

"You know Latin?"

"Some of it, yeah"

"Why? Nobody speaks that language anymore," Hermione said raising her eyebrows

"I know people that do,"

"Weird," Hermione mumbled under her breath then some more that Percy couldn't hear.

What if he just left a few clues here and there so that Hermione could figure it out on her own? That wouldn't be his fault. Hecate can't turn him into a guinea pig for that.

Pulling him out of his thoughts a portrait door opened revealing a red-faced Neville out of breath.

"Percy... Hermione thank gods you guys... here," he said catching his breath "Malfoy he - he knows about Harry and Ron and - a dragon."

"What!" Percy said jumping off his butt "Where is he?"

"Neville, how do you know this?" Hermione asked calmly

"I just saw him, he said that I won't see Harry, Ron, and Hagrid again after he tells McGonagall about the dragon," Neville explained. Then in a quiet voice, he asked "There not really a dragon, right?"

Percy looked at Hermione, Neville would probably faint if they told him about it.

"Neville it's really nothing to worry about," Hermione said softly "It's just a baby dragon."

"Oh, my granny was right," Neville said looking like a tomato

Percy turned to Hermione "We got to go save them,"

"I don't know Percy, what would we even do? Will be better off here."

"I'm still going even if you're not," said Percy walking to the exit. No way would he leave it up to fate if his friends into trouble.

"Ugh, fine I'll come," she said following after him

"I'll wait here for you guys," they heard Neville call after they stepped out of the room.

"Where do we go?" Percy asked right away

"To the Astronomy tower," replied Hermione "Honestly, Percy what would you do without me."

Percy smiled she sounded a lot like how Annabeth talked to him.

They made their way over to the dark tower hiding in the shadows just in case. They stood in front of the spiral staircase leading up to the roof. They hear footsteps coming down.

Percy pulled Hermione behind a stone statue. They listen for any voice, which could identify them.

"It's so over," they heard from the staircase.

Hermione mouthed 'Ron' to him.

He nodded. Both of them popped out from the side to see a frowning Harry and Ron.

"Percy - Hermione," Harry yelped

The next thing they saw a grim-looking Filch come from behind them.

"Oh my we are in some trouble, now," he said adding joyfully "more the merrier, right Weasley?"

Things couldn't be worse for Percy today. This had to land top 3 on the worst days of his life. Up there with the time he almost drowned in front of Jason and Piper.

Filch took them down to Professor McGonagall's study on the first floor, where they waited. Percy tried to ask them what happened, but Filch was having none of it. What could have happened Percy thought, where was the invisibility cloak? What happened to Norbert?

When Professor McGonagall came back, she looked furious. She looked like she could breathe more fire than Norbert.

"I would have never believed it from any of you. Mr. Filch says you were up in the astronomy tower. It's one o'clock in the morning. Explain yourselves?"

It was the first time Hermione had ever failed to answer a teacher's question. She was staring at her slippers, as still as a statute.

"I think I've got a good idea of what's been going on," said Professor McGonagall "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. You fed Draco Malfoy some cock bull story about a dragon, trying to get him out of bed and into trouble. I've already caught him."

Percy was about to say it does take a rocket scientist to figure it out, but Hermione grabbed his arm as she knew what he was thinking.

"I'm disgusted," said Professor McGonagall. "Five students out of bed in one night! I've never heard such a thing before! You, Miss Granger, I thought you had more sense. As for you Potter and Weasly I thought Gryffindor meant more to you than this, and Jackson I thought we already talked about this. All four of you will receive detentions. Nothing gives you the right to walk around school at night, especially these days, it's very dangerous - and fifty points will be taken from Gryffindor."

"Fifty?" Harry gasped "But Professor-

"Fifty points each," said Professor McGonagall, breathing heavily through her, Athena-like nose.

"Professor -- please -"

"You can't -"

"Don't tell me what I can and can't do Potter. Now go back to bed, all of you. I've never been more ashamed of Gryffindor students."

Percy tried doing the math in his head of how many points they had lost. He put a finger up for him, Hermione, Harry, and Ron. Counted fifty for each, fifty, one hundred, one fifty, two hundred. They lost 200 hundred points! Holy Poseidon's underpants.

Hermione and Ron didn't get it as badly as Percy and Harry got it. Whenever he walked around in the halls people would point at him and insult him, and not quietly.

Slytherins, on the other hand, clapped as he walked past them, whistling and cheering, "Thanks American boy, we forgive you for the war,"

"They forget it in a few weeks. Fred and George have lost loads of points all the time and people still like him," said Ron

"They've never lost two hundred points in one go, though, have they?" said Harry miserably

"Well - no," Ron admitted

Percy blamed it all on him. If he had listened to Hermione when she said they should wait back in the common room, they would have only lost one hundred points and would be in third place. Not good, but a least they would have some shot to win the House Cup.

Harry took in even worse than Percy. Asking Wood to resign from Quidditch. Wood didn't allow it though.

The five of them: Percy, Layla, Harry, Hermione, and Ron kept to themselves in the library, working late at night, trying to remember the ingredients in complicated potions, learning charms and spells by heart, memorizing the dates of magical discoveries and rebellions.

Percy tried his best to learn everything he could even though it wouldn't matter. But to him, it mattered he wanted to learn everything possible about this world.
