Chapter 13 - Back At It
If you're gonna read this chapter you might want to sit down, it's a little less than 3,000 words
Percy got back on the first day of the new semester. He and Layla arrived at the same time, they told each other about their vacations as they walked up to the Gryffindor common room.
He saw Harry sitting by the fireplace looking lost in his world.
Percy and Layla tiptoed up behind the sofa, jumped over, and landed on opposite sides of Harry.
"Hey Harry," Layla said "We're back. You miss us?"
"Ah, Harry jumped up a second "Percy Lalya, where did you come from?"
"We just got here dude," Percy said
"Well thank goodness you guys are here," Harry said "Hermione has been driving me crazy, all because I was up walking through the castle three nights in a row."
"Why, oh did you find out who Flamel is?" Layla asked
"No, I found something else though," Harry said "It's this mirror that shows me my parents, and I know my parents are dead. But last night I was at the mirror and Professor Dumbledore was there and explained it to me,"
"Well," Percy said asking Harry to continue
"He said that the happiest man would be able to see his reflection just the way he is."
"What the hell does that mean?" Layla said
"That the mirror shows you what you want the most. Dumbledore also said that many men have died because of it and I should forget about the mirror,"
It sounds a lot like those Sirens that Annabeth wanted to listen to so badly on their way to the Sea of Monsters. Percy also remembered how dangerous they were.
"I wanna see this mirror," Layla said smiling "I better see Snape six feet under."
"I don't think you look at it," Percy said "It sounds dangerous."
"You sound like Hermione," Layla said back.
"Percy's right, I have had nightmares about my parents," Harry said "And it doesn't matter if you want to, Dumbledore said the mirror was moving to its new home."
"Oh well, still would be fun," Layla said.
Percy said, "So you and Ron didn't find out anything about Flamel?"
"No, we've looked through every modern advancement book in the library," Harry said "I remember reading his name somewhere though."
"It's not like you read much so it must be in a common book," said Layla
"I have an idea," Percy said "When I went back home I told my - uh someone about Nicolas Flamel and how we couldn't find him in any of the books we've looked at. So she said that we should look at older books about people, cause we have only looked at modern stuff."
"It can't hurt to try," said Layla
Percy was starting to give up on finding Flemel even with Annabeth's idea they couldn't find him. They were only still looking cause Harry was sure he read the name somewhere. Once classes were back the group would spend their whole time skimming through books. And it's not like he could read so it was the other four doing the work and Harry was always at Quidditch practice, so it was really only Layla, Hermione, and Ron looking.
Percy was watching Ron and Hermione play chess, but it wasn't like normal chess, these pieces moved and talked. Even with the magic chess, is so boring, where is Layla?
Harry sat down next to him and Percy saw his face "Gezz you look terrible, what happened to you?"
Harry quietly told them about Snape's sudden, sinister desire to be a Quidditch referee.
"Don't play," Hermione said at once.
"Say you're sick," Percy said
"Pretend to break your leg," said Ron
"Or really break your leg," added Percy
"I can't," said Harry. "There isn't a reserve Seeker, If I back out, Gryffindor can't play at all."
At that moment Neville toppled into the common room, with Layla behind him.
"Oh, Neville I told you that would happen," she said helping him get back up.
Everyone laughed at Nevile as he leaned on Layla bunny hopping towards them. Hermione leaped up and performed the countercurse. Neville's legs sprang apart.
"What happened?" Hermione asked, leading Nevile to sit next to Percy and Harry.
"It was Draco," said Layla "I was in the library and heard the idiot say he'd been looking for someone to practice that on."
"Go to Professor McGonagall!" Hermione said to Nevile. "Report him."
"Oh, no need for that." said Layla "Let's just say we won't be hearing from him for some time."
Percy laughed "I want to feel bad for him now, but I can't."
Percy also knew that Layla's parents invited Malfoy and his parents over for a few days, she told him that it was terrible, but it would have been way worse if not for Copper.
"Nevile you can't just let Malfoy do this to you," said Ron "He is used to walking over people - well not now, but you can't make it easier for him,"
"There's no need to tell me I'm not brave enough to be in Gryffindor, Malfoy's already done that." Neville choked out
"Nevile, that's not true the Sorting Hat chose you for Gryffindor, and where did it put Malfoy? In stinking Slytherin." Layla said
"Thanks, Layla, I don't know what I would do with you," Nevile said
Harry pulled out a box and handed it to Nevile "It's my last one, here have it."
"What is that?" Percy asked
"It's a Chocolate frog," said Nevile "Thanks, Harry... I think... I'll go to bed... D'you want the card, you collect them, don't you."
Percy couldn't believe Harry just had a chocolate frog in his pocket, how did he not eat it?
"Dumbledore again," Harry said "He was the first one I ever -" He gasped. He stared at the back of the card. Then looked up at them.
"I've found him!" Harry whispered. "I've found Flamel! I told you I'd read the name somewhere, the first time I got this card on the train ride here,"
"Holy sweat Mother you did it, Harry," Layla said "What exactly did you do?"
Harry grinned here listen to this "Dumbledor is particularly famous for his defeat if the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon's blood, and his work on alchemy with his partner, Nicolas Flamel!"
Hermione jumped to her feet. She hadn't looked this excited since they got their grades back for their very first test.
"Stay there!" she said, and she sprinted up the stairs to the girl's dormitories.
"What's she up to?" Percy asked Layla
"I don't know what goes inside of that elephant brain of hers," Layla said
In no time she was dashing back, an enormous old book in her arms.
"Hermione if I wanted to see about my grandfather I would look in there," Percy said thinking about his grandpa, how was he doing these days?
She ignored him "I never thought to look in here!" she whispered excitedly. "I got this out of the library weeks ago for a bit of light reading."
"Light?" said Ron, but Hermione told him to be quiet until she'd looked something up, and started flicking frantically through the pages.
At last, she found what she was looking for.
"I knew it! I knew it!"
"Are we allowed to talk now," Ron said groupily. Hermione once aging ignored him.
"Nicolas Flamel," she whispered dramatically, "is the only known maker of the Sorcerer's Stone!"
It didn't have the effect she'd expected.
"And we're supposed to know what that is?" Layla said
"Honestly, don't you read? Look read that, there." she pushed the book toward them.
Percy tried to read it but he really couldn't he wished there was some spell he could use to get rid of his dyslexia. Everyone looked deep through as they read it, this sucks.
"See?" said Hermione, when they finished reading "The dog must be guarding Flamel's Sorcerer's Stone! I bet he asked Dumbledore to keep it safe for him, because they're friends and he knew someone was after it, that's why he wanted the Stone moved out of Gringots!"
Percy was still lost, he was even more lost after what Hermione said.
"Nice job Mines," said Layla giving Hermionie a high-five
"Ok, I have a few questions, what the Hades is this stone and Mines?" Percy asked
Layla just shrugged "Just trying it out,"
"Didn't you read it - oh yeah," Ron said
Percy saw that Hermione was staring right at him. He knew where he slipped you but he couldn't care less right now, so what if she figures out, it's not like the world going to end.
"Well, how do you say this," Harry started "The stone makes gold and stops you from dying! It's really no wonder Snape's after it! Anyone would want it."
"And no wonder we couldn't find Flamel in the books his not exactly recent," said Ron "His six hundred and sixty five."
Woah that was a lot. A stone that makes gold and makes you immortal there is no way that exists. But if the Flamel guy is 645 years old, then it must be true.
"You know what?" Harry said "I'm going to play, if I don't then the Slytherins will think I'm just too scared to face Snape. I'll show them...It'll really wipe the smiles off their faces if we win."
"Just as long as we're not wiping you off the field," said Hermione.
"What's Harry talking about," said Layla
Percy filled Layla in about the new developments on the Quidditch match as walked to their separate stair cases to their dormitories.
Harry looked terrible a few hours before the game.
"Harry have you looked at yourself," Layla said
"I know - I haven't been able to sleep much I can't get this Stone out of my head and Snape, why do I feel think his following me around everywhere. I'm telling you sometimes it feels like he can read my mind. What if he knows what we know about the Stone."
"Bro calm down," Percy said
"Yeah don't worry about that right now," Layla said patting Harry on the shoulder "If we win will be in first place and that hasn't been done in 7 years,"
"Yeah, yeah you right," Harry said running off
"You got this!" Percy shouted
"I don't think he heard you," Layla said covering her ears
"Uhuh, are you and Lauren going to go all out again today?"
"Yup, it's a blackout theme this time. So you better be wearing black clothes or you won't be standing next to me."
Percy was walking up to the stands with Layla and Lauren. Both of them could be pass for spies right now. He saw Hermione and Ron up in front of them Hermione was showing him something with her wand.
"Hey Ron and Hermione are quite close now aren't they?" Percy said
"Yeah," Layla said "You should hear Hermione in our room she only does two things read or talk about Ron Weasley."
"I know, like I can only listen to so much about that boy," said Lauren
"Luckily most of the time she's reading," said Layla
"I didn't know they were that close," Percy said
"Aww is little Perce jealous, does he have a crush on 'Mione?" Lauren said in her baby voice
"What no stop it," Percy told her.
"Just joking don't got to be like that," Lauren muttered
In the locker room, Wood had taken Harry aside.
"Don't want to pressure you, Potter, but if we ever need an early catch it would be now. Finish the game before Snape favors Hufflepuff too much."
"The whole school's out there!" said Fred Weasley, peering out of the door. "Even - blimey Dumbledore's come to watch!"
Harry's heart did a somersault.
"Dumbledore?" he said, dashing to the door to make sure. There was no mistaking that silver beard. Harry was relieved there was no way that Snape would try to hurt him if Dumbledore was watching.
Percy also noticed the same thing.
"Guys Dumbledore's here," Percy said pointing to the old man "Harry's safe as long as his here right?"
"Yeah," said Ron "Maybe that's why Snape's looking so angry right now."
"Look - they're off. Ouch!"
Percy saw Malfoy poke Ron in the back of the head.
'Oh, sorry Weasley, didn't see you there." Malfoy grinned broadly at Crabbe and Goyle.
"Draco if you're just going to bother us, just go," said Lalya "Oh, and nice lip."
Malfoy ignored Layla, but she was right his purple lip was a good look on him.
"How long do you think Potter's going to stay on his broom this time? Anyone want to bet? What about you, Weasley?"
Ron didn't answer; Snape had just given Hufflepuff a penalty for no reason.
"You know how I think they choose people for the Gryffindor team?" said Malfoy loudly "It's people they feel sorry for. See there's Potter, who's got no parents, then there's the Weasleys, who've got no money - you should be there on the team to Longbottom, you've got no brains."
Nevile turned a bright red but turned to face Malfoy.
"Nevile just ignore him you to Ron," Layla said
Nevile didn't listen to her advice.
"I'm worth twelve of you Malfoy," he stammered.
Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyla howled with laughter, but Ron, still not looking away from the game said, "You tell him, Neville."
Percy whispered to Layla "How do you ignore this kid, I'm about to cut him with my sword and he's not even talking to me."
Layla shrugged "You get used to it after 11 years."
"Jackson, what are you whispering about." Malfoy said, "You know I don't know why your hear."
"You don't need to know," Percy said back not looking away from the game.
"Did your parents die like Potter's too, that's why your here, had no home left," Malfoy taunted
"Malfoy, I'm warning you, say one more word -"
"Look," said Hermione suddenly "Harry -"
Harry had suddenly gone into a dive, which drew many gasps and cheers from the crowd.
"You're in luck, Weasley, Potter's obviously spotted some money on the ground!" Malfoy said
That snapped Ron. Before Malfoy knew what was happening, Ron was on top of him wrestling him to the ground. Neville even jumped in.
Percy and Layla weren't watching the game anymore but they did hear Hermionie scream "Come on Harry!"
But at the same time, Percy was thinking come on Ron, as he punched Malfoy on the face adding to his bruise. He pulled his pen out of his pocket but Layla pushed his hand down saying
"That's too obvious. My brother taught me this jinx, it's really good."
But just then Harry caught the Snitch, they won Gryffindor was in the lead.
"Ron Nevile get up! We won, we won," Layla and Hermione said jumping up and down
Then Layla stopped and turned to Malfoy raised her wand and said "Levicorpus."
Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle all rose to in air dangling by their ankles. Shouting for them to be let down. Ron and Nevile were laughing and almost crying at the sight.
"Layla you are evil," said Percy
"Why thank you,"
"You want to see something else," Percy took out his own wand sneakily he said "Aguamenti." which created a stream of water, then Percy used his power to split it into three streams and shot it and Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle. Soaking them.
"Percy, I didn't know you had it in you," Layla said
"He insulted my parents and my friends nobody does that."
"Now let's go party," said Layla
Percy was having a blast even Ron and Hermione decided to come this time. Harry was still nowhere to be found, hopefully, Snape didn't kidnap him after the win.
"Harry, where have you been?" Hermione squeaked.
"We won! You won!" shouted Ron "And I gave Malfoy a black, and Neville tried to take on Crabble and Goyle, and Layla and Percy humiliated them in front of the whole school. Talk about showing Slytherin!"
"Yeah we did," said Layla giving Percy a fist bump
"Never mind that now," said Harry breathlessly. "Let's find an empty room, wait till you hear this..."
"But the party," Percy said
"That doesn't matter," said Harry "Look we were right it is the Sorcerer's Stone, and Snape's trying to force Quirrell to help him get it. He asked if he knew how to get past Fluffy - and he said something about Quirrell's 'hocuspocus' - I reckon there are other things guarding the stone apart from Fluffy, loads of enchantments, probably, and Quirrell would have done some anti-Drak Arts spell that Snape needs to break through -"
"So you mean the Stone's only safe as long as Quirrell stands up to Snape?" Layla said in alarm.
"It'll be gone by next Tuesday," said Ron.
"Oh, brother, were doomed brother," Percy said
"Not a time for jokes Percy," said Hermione "This is serious."
"I know that," Percy said "Harry how did you find all this out anyway?"
"I saw Snape head into the woods with Quirrell there too, so I got my broom and flew above them and listened in."
Ok so things are actually getting serious now Percy thought and he still hasn't had any time to practice with his sword, remembering the last time he used it, shaking his head. He has got to find some time to get ready.
