Chapter 12 - New York
Percy was staring at the apartment with the blue Christmas lights in front of him standing on the sidewalk when the shadow of a car sped by and he really realized that he was back home, back in Manhattan.
He was somewhat scared, how would his mom react? He didn't tell anyone he was going to be back. He would just rip off the band-aid. Walking up to the door he knocked on the door, waiting patiently for someone to come.
He heard the door click and slowly open. That's when he saw his mom wearing his blue, ugly Christmas sweater.
"Hi, Mom,"
"Percy!" she gushed bringing him into a bone-crushing hug "It's a Christmas Eve miracle."
His mom held him till he felt something push on his stomach. Pulling away fast "What was that?"
"Oh Percy," his mom softly laughed "That was the baby she kicked, she knows you're back home," she said with her eyes glistening.
"Oh, how can the baby know that?"
"If I know, so does she," Sally Jackson said "Paul got over here we got what we wished for."
"A pizza," he heard come from the living room. Paul walked and saw him "Oh nevermind that this is way better than a pizza,"
"Hey Paul," Percy said sharing a hug with him.
"Come on," his mom said heading off to the kitchen
Percy sat down smelling the godly food he was about to eat.
"How you do get here?" Paul asked "Last we heard you were in London in some magic school,"
"Yeah," Percy said "Winter break started today and they let me come back,"
His mom put down a plate of hot blue cookies right in front of him and he instantly reached for one. And his mom didn't swipe his hand away.
"Where's Annabeth?" he said after chewing his first cookie
"Board of us already," his mom teased "She just left to go to Camp right before you came,"
"Oh, can I go see her?" he asked
"Percy you're 17 you don't need my permission to go," his mom said "But yes you may go,"
"Yes," he stood up but his mom pulled him back down.
"Only after you clean you. No way I'm letting you go looking like that."
"Huh, I look fine,"
"Have you seen your clothes and not to mention your hair It could take hours to fix it all,"
"Mom," Percy whined
"What you can't blame me for wanting to spend time with my baby when he comes back after two weeks,"
"Really it was 3 months for me," Percy said thinking about how that was possible as his mom dragged him to his closet. After what felt like hours of changing clothes his mom let go of him.
"Oh, you look so cute." Sally said "Alright you can go now,"
"Yeah yeah, love you," Percy said stepping out of the cozy apartment into the cold wind. He could walk there or surprise her by vapor traveling right into Camp. Closing his eyes feeling the water in the lake at Camp Half-Blood he opened them and there he was knee deep in the water. He made his way to the sand in a thin layer of snow.
Percy was happy his mom made him wear a sweater cause it was cold and snowing in camp. In the distance he saw the light flickering getting closer it was the bonfire with the campers around it singing Christmas songs. Percy's eyes tunnel visioned on a mess of blonde curly hair. He walked over slowly hoping this would be the best surprise ever.
But it all got ruined when she turned her head and looked directly at him somehow she didn't even look surprised at all just smiling. Percy stood there looking confused. She secretly pointed her finger at where Percy came from. She stood up from the crowd and walked away then put on her New York Yankees cap, going invisible.
Percy started to walk in the way she pointed completely clueless. He was supposed to surprise Annabeth, but Annabeth surprised him. He got to the beach and called "Wise Girl?"
Then he felt out of nowhere his arm twisted and he rolled over sold air landing on his back. Still invisible Annabeth knelt forcing her knee on Percy's stomach then suddenly flipped off her cap. And whispered "Seaweed Brain."
"Wise girl," he said pulling his girlfriend down slowly like it was their first kiss.
She pulled away and lay her back on the snow asking "When did you get here?"
"Around 30 minutes ago," Percy said, "I went to the apartment first."
"Hmh makes sense now on why you look so ready," said Annabeth "Your mom do all this?" sliding her hand through his hair.
"Yeah, she also baked blue cookies,"
"Sally missed you a lot," Annabeth said turning and looking into each other's eyes. "so did the camp. I missed you, Percy."
Percy wrapped his arms around all the cold from before went away he held her tight "I'm sorry,"
Percy held her perfectly fine if they were to fall asleep just like this. But Annabeth got off her back and now seating
"Tell me everything?"
"What," Percy said unsuspecting that
"Everything that you learned and what you did,"
"Wise Girl," Percy said "I already said everything in the letters."
"Yeah well, your letters aren't good at all they make more questions than you answer,"
"Can't we do this later?" Percy whined
"But then you have to show me every spell you learned."
"Ok, that won't take long," Percy said smiling
Then the horn sounded calling everyone back.
"We should get going, as much as I want to we can't stay like this forever,"
"But we can,"
"Come on," she put her hand out to pull him up.
Percy took her hand, and Annabeth pulled him up with ease. Together hand in hand they walked back to the campfire.
Percy woke up from on his bed having the best sleep he had in a long time. Opening his eyes he saw Annabeth towering over him "You drool in your sleep."
Percy could only laugh at that "When did you get up?"
"Way before you," she said "You do know what day it is right?"
"No what?"
"It's Christmas Seaweed Brain."
"What," Percy jumped up from his bed "Christmas!" and ran out of his room.
"Aren't you forgetting something?" Annabeth called
Percy walked back in shirtless "Oops." Percy put on a blue Cookie Monster shirt from Sesame Street. Going out of his room the second time he walked to the tree which had multiple presents on the floor. Realizing that he didn't get anyone anything he felt bad.
"Wait, I didn't get you guys anything."
"You being here is enough," his mom said appearing from the kitchen.
"And you still have to tell me everything thing," Annabeth said "That can be your gift to me."
"Yeah, Percy, why how about you tell us a story about your time in this magical school in London," Paul said sitting down on the couch.
"Ah ok, I have a really funny one. So me and this kid his name is Harry,"
"That's one you are protecting," said Annabeth
"Yes, that one. Well, Harry somehow got on the Quidditch team even though first years aren't supposed to."
Sally raised her hand "Asking for the all of us, what is Quidditch?"
"It's a sport they have where they fly around on brooms..."
"Fly on brooms, they really are witches," said Paul
"Yeah, anyway they fly on broom..."
"How do the brooms fly?" his mom asked
"I don't know maybe by magic," Percy said getting ticked off
"So they fly on these brooms..."
"Sorry," Annabeth said holding back a smile "But do you know what magic it is to make them fly?"
"Do you want me to tell the story or not?" he shouted "And yes I do know how to make things fly," Percy said smartly
"Really, show us," Sally said
"No, I don't think I will," he said crossing his arms "I'm not even going to finish the funny story,"
"Percy we are sorry we won't interrupt you again please continue the story," said Annabeth
"Fine, ok so Harry was flying on his broom looking the Snitch..."
"What a Snitch?" Paul asked
Sighing Percy said, "Right I didn't get to tell you what Qudditcih is."
After a long time, Percy finally got to finish the story.
"How is that funny." Sally said "The teacher tried to kill the boy that's scary, not funny,"
Percy realized what he told them "I don't know, it was funny when he caught the Snitch by almost swallowing it."
"Once again not funny," Paul said "The student could have died from that."
"I don't know I guess you just had to be there."
"That sounds important. Why didn't you send a letter telling me about that?" Annabeth said
"It just happened like 2 days ago or would it be - I don't know how the time works in this anymore,"
"It seems like he doesn't know a lot of things," Paul whispered to Sally
"Seaweed Brain, it doesn't matter right now." said Annabeth "Show us some spells?" she said bouncing up and down on the sofa.
"Ok fine." Percy pulled out his wand and pointed it at a bowl of candy in front of him.
"Wingardium Leviosa."
The plastic bowl flew up high and touched the ceiling then Percy slowly set it back down on the coffee table.
"Woah," his parents said
"Boring," Annabeth said "Next."
"That was cool, but fine." he pointed his wand back at the bowl "Aguamenti." Water appeared and filled the bowl to the top.
"Where did the water come from?" Sally asked
Percy shrugged "Magic,"
"That would have been extremely useful on our quest." said Annabeth "Would have saved a lot of time."
"I was thinking the same thing. There a bunch of spells that do all kinds of things that I don't know,"
Paul nudged Sally "Like I was saying."
The four of them were having Mexican food for dinner.
"Remember Percy when you brought that recommendation letter that writes itself," said Paul "That was fun."
Percy clearly remembered that it was stressful for him but Paul was right it was really funny.
Percy was helping his mom with the dishes when she whispered to him and handed him the car keys "Go take Annabeth somewhere, I got this."
"You sure?"
His mom nodded. Percy found Annabeth sitting next to Paul they were examining his wand. He grabbed Annabeth's hand and pulled her up.
"Come on where going," He said dragging her across the room.
"Going where?"
"Uh, to Sweat Frog," said Percy unlocking the door with one hand
"Why?"
"You're my girlfriend, that's why."
"So it's a date," she said
"Yeah it is, we can imagine that I picked you up from your house," Percy said hurrying to the car, turning it on, he lowered the window. "I'm here to pick up an Annabeth Chase for our lovely date."
"That's me," Annabeth said walking down and opening the passenger door. "I'm a passenger princess."
Percy laughed "Where to go, Princess Chase?"
"Hmh, we shall go to thy Sweet Frog,"
"Of course M'lady," Percy replied
They drove off to Sweet Frog listening to Upside Down By Jack Johnson. Pulling up to the Sweat Frog, Percy parked the car in the empty parking lot.
"That's a horrible park," Annabeth said looking at the car "Give me the keys I'll fix it."
"Hey, I haven't driven a car in like 3 months."
Annabeth parked the car perfectly of course. They walked into the store, got what they wanted, and walked out bearly staying in the store for 5 minutes. Over time they figured out they couldn't stay in one place too long or the monsters would find them.
While they were talking a shiny rainbow appeared in front of them, with their friend Piper Mclean on the other side.
"Piper look who I found," Annabeth said pushing Percy forward
"Percy!" Piper said, "You're an idiot you know that, you should have told us you would be back, the seven of us could have all celebrated Christmas together."
"Sorry," Percy said
"Yeah you better be I had to listen to Annabeth..."
"Ok Piper that's nice," Annabeth said cutting her off "Why did you call?"
"Just checking in on you didn't want you to be alone on Christmas," Piper said then in the background a voice said, "Is that Percy?"
"Hey Jason," Percy said recognizing the voice, then Jason came into view.
"Percy, bro I have missed you, oh and Merry Christmas."
"I've missed you too Jace, Merry Christmas."
"Nah I doubt that from what I've heard you're having a lot of fun at Pig Pimpls."
"Ha, yeah it's been fun, but not like with you guys,"
"Ok nice seeing you guys Merry Christmas," Annabeth said swiping through the rainbow
"I had to Perce otherwise you and Jason would have talked for hours about gods knows what."
"Yeah, I was telling the truth though if you were there it would be so much more fun," Percy said
The next two weeks went by fast but also slow at the same time. Percy was just having way too much fun with Annabeth. They did everything before he had to leave again. He told her every single detail of all he had learned at Hogwarts. She told him all her theories on Snape and Fluffy. They went back to camp on Friday to play capture the flag, Annabeth won, but it was still good to play again.
"When are you going to be back honey?" Sally said pulling away from Percy
"Mom I don't know," said Percy
"I don't know you have said that a lot," Paul said smiling
"I don't know Paul, I guess I have,"
"Tell me everything Seaweed Brain," Annabeth said
"I will Wise Girl, everything," Percy said
Hecate appeared "Ready, Jackson."
"Probably not but let's get it over with."
