Chapter Thirty One
Well, this update took twice as long to get out so I made sure it was twice as long. Sorry about the wait, but PARCC has been PARCC backwards.
Hermione's POV
It was mid May and I would like to say that everything had gone back to normal. I wish I could say that Harry and Ron had apologized and that the entire school had accepted Percy as who he was only two months ago. But that would make me a liar. Exactly what Harry and Ron thought I was. And if there's one thing I've come to dread in the past month is prove them right.
Annabeth's visit to her cousin had been taking longer than expected. I hadn't been able to speak to her, but judging by her extended absence, she hadn't taken care of it yet. If there was one person that Percy needed more than ever it was her.
I looked up from my book as I bumped into someone in the corridor. It was Ron, and he was surprisingly alone. I didn't know where we stood. We had never officially broken up, but I we weren't on the best terms, and I wasn't sure I could deal with him right now. So I did the natural thing and tried to ignore the fact that I had just run into my boyfriend. Then again, it was Ron. So he did the natural thing and grabbed me by the elbow.
"Hermione," Ron said, stopping me in my tracks. "Wait."
I spun to face him. "Wait?" I asked quietly, "Isn't that all I've been doing these past months? Waiting? Waiting for you and Harry to come off your high horses and apologize?"
Ron bit his lip, running a hand through his red hair. "Harry and I have been waiting for the same thing from you."
I jerked my arm away from him, frowning. "Well the difference between you two pompous idiots and me is that I'm right about Percy Jackson."
He pulled a piece of parchment out of his pocket. "Harry doesn't know I'm doing this. But if you're going to spend all of your time with the traitor, I wanted you to have this." I didn't say anything.
He opened his mouth like he wanted to say something but didn't know how. After a couple of seconds, he shook his head and walked around me.
And I let him leave.
<*~*~*~*>
The Common Room was empty by the time I got back. The full moon shone through the window and I thought ruefully of the werewolf who'd died for the wizard community. He would be ashamed of how we had turned out after the war. We'd split up and there was a new war on the brink of starting.
I had a solid two minutes of free time reading my book before Percy Jackson burst through the portrait hole. Sad, but that's more than I'd been getting lately.
"Hermione," he called, grinning, "I found the stuff." I didn't ask what he meant, but I knew. Suddenly my book didn't seem so important anymore.
I raced out of the portrait hole with him, knowing full well it was after curfew. He led me through unfamiliar halls that I was sure hadn't been here a couple of months prior. When Percy was well ahead of me, racing through the labyrinth of corridors as if he had lived here his entire life, I pulled out the parchment that Ron had given me and whispered. "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good."
The map came to life, and sure enough, these passageways weren't even connected to the school. You would have thought that the Marauders of all people would have known they were here.
Something tickled at the back of my mind, something Harry had said two months ago. I shook myself. I wasn't supposed to be thinking about them. I'm not even their friend anymore.
All at once, as I was rounding a bend, it came barreling into me. Harry had said that this was where he'd encountered Percy only months ago. Percy wasn't dumb, that much I knew. So why bring me into this abandoned hallway when he could have brought all of the stolen items to me. There weren't so many of them that he couldn't manage to carry all of them, and even if he couldn't have, he has magic. Unless...
My eyes widened and I came to a screeching halt, but it was too late. Torches lit up along the walls, and at the end of the hallway was the one and only Percy Jackson.
It all happened so fast that I almost couldn't process it. His owl came from above me and plucked the wand right out of my hand, flying back to Percy's shoulder and dropping it in his lap. The way he pet the bird as if he were a stereotypical dictator stroking a cat was so dorky I would have thought he was still himself. But I knew he wasn't.
He smiled cruelly, something I was sure no one had ever seen on his face. "Hello, Hermione Granger." His voice was deeper and louder than usual, resonating through the hallway in a way that could not have been natural. "How kind of you to join me."
I said nothing, opting instead to glare at him. He walked toward me calmly, drawing and uncapping Riptide. There was something in his expression that told me by the end of this night, Trevor will not be the only one he's murdered. I frowned at the thought, not letting my unease show on my face.
His usually bright green eyes were pale and ruthless, his robes billowing around him even though we were inside and there was no breeze.
It was strange, the way he turned on me like I was one of the monsters from his stories. He didn't charge at me quickly, in fact, it seemed that he was savoring this moment. Without a wand or a sword, I would not be able to fight him or outrun him. So the only choice left was death.
"I threw away my friends for you!" I cried, trying to distract him, "They were right about you, Perseus Jackson, I was wrong to trust you." His steps didn't even falter. If anything, they got faster. In one desperate, last minute attempt to stop him, I spat, "You're a traitor."
At that, something shattered in his expression. His eyes brightened and he fell to one knee as if bowing. He looked up at me fearfully, sweat suddenly dripping from his hair and his face. "Hermione," he gasped.
"Eidolon."
I didn't know what that was, so I could only imagine what it did. But if it was strong enough to control Percy Jackson, it must've been quite the force to reckon with.
I snatched my wand from the ground, and as the eidolon took control back from him, I yelled, "Stupefy!" Now rendered unconscious, I took the chance to catch my breath and take a good look at him.
"Lumos." I whispered, holding my wand to his face. I could see how gaunt he'd become in that split second using his last preserves of energy to wrest himself from the control of the eidolon and spitting out a single word. I needed to bring him back to the Common Rooms and then, my favorite part.
Research.
<*~*~*~*~*>
The hard part was finding it in a book. After that, it was easy. After being reminded of what it was, I recalled the solution from Percy's adventures and quickly IM'ed Piper to get it out of him.
"Poor guy," she mused, watching him rest in the Hospital Wing bed, "Eidolons again?" She looked over at me and smiled softly, "For a wizard, you're not bad, Granger."
I nodded absent mindedly, thinking about Ron and Harry. I had been right. Then again, so had Harry. I regretted the last things I'd said to him, just as I knew I would. He needed to know what had happened. He didn't need to believe me, but he needed to know.
Piper put a hand on my arm, startling me out of my thoughts. "Go to them," she urged, somehow knowing what I'd been thinking, "I can take care of this Kelp Head for an hour."
I grinned gratefully, saying a small thank you before racing out of the room.
<*~*~*~*>
Just as I'd hoped, Harry and Ron were in their dorm. And alone, thank the gods. Harry was sitting on his bed polishing his broom with his back to me, and Ron was, surprisingly, reading the book I got him for Christmas.
They both looked at me as soon as I entered, but Harry looked away just as quickly. Ron kept staring at me in wonder, as if he didn't believe that I was actually standing in front of him.
I stood there silently until Harry couldn't take it anymore. "What do you want, Hermione?" He asked with a rudeness that didn't quite mask his hurt.
"It's about Percy." Looking back, I probably shouldn't have started with that, because Harry's hands clenched on the wood of his broom and he hissed.
"If you came all the way here to talk about Perseus Jackson, you're wasting your time." He vigorously wiped at the handle of his broom as if he wanted to rub it away into nothingness.
I sat at the edge of his bed, making him stiffen, and said quietly, "He's been possessed, Harry. You were right about him. He was a traitor. But it wasn't really him, if that makes sense in any way. I guess what I mean to say is..." I took a deep breath, swallowing my pride.
"I've missed you guys, Harry. I miss having my friends. Percy and Sophia have been great, but they can't replace the two of you. And I'm sorry I haven't had your back lately. Some of your actions have been misplaced, but I should have tried harder to make you understand. I should have-"
I cut myself off as Harry hugged me, my voice not working in my shock. When he finally pulled away, looking a little bit embarrassed as he glanced over at Ron, who didn't seem to mind, he smiled at me.
"I'm sorry, too. I shouldn't have said what I said. Losing you, if anything, has shown me how wrong I was. I called you a liar, and you're not. I called him a traitor, and technically, he's not. And I get it. It's kind of hard to have my back if I'm turning it on you." He bit his lip and smiled. "Friends?"
This time I hugged him. "Always."
"So about a certain Percy Jackson?" He inquired, his voice suddenly free of its previous venom. I stepped out of the Boy's Dorm, motioning for him to follow.
<*~*~*~*>
We had brought Sophia, Ginny, and Raydon with us to the infirmary to visit Percy.
"Wow," Harry breathed, looking down at Percy, "I haven't seen him look this... beaten since Lucius Malfoy had at him with a sword."
"Yeah," Ron agreed, "The bloke's been through a lot."
Percy's eyes snapped open, his breathing becoming less even. His eyes landed on the figures around him, and he relaxed into his pillow.
"It's out?" Percy asked, directing the question to Piper.
"Duh," she replied, "You really need to stop getting possessed, Waterboy."
"Got it," Percy muttered, closing his eyes again. "Harry?" Harry raised an eyebrow at the son of Poseidon, quickly processing that his eyes were closed and followed it up with a short, "Yeah?"
"I'm sorry about what happened," Percy said, "But since you're standing here and not killing me, I can only assume you're okay with me now." Percy smiled suddenly. "So how long have I been out, Potter?"
Harry grinned back, "Four days."
Percy looked at Raydon, who still seemed unsure of what he was doing there. "Raydon, has Ginny told you everything yet?" Raydon nodded. "Any questions?"
"Are you really the children of the gods?" He was motioning with his hands toward Percy, Piper, and Luna. He nodded slowly, letting his mind process it. "So you can make storms and you have this super weird pen-sword thing?"
Percy placed a hand on his chest, offended. "Super weird? Super awesome!" He ignored Percy's complaint and continued to ramble.
He shook his head, as if trying to clear it. "You're a god? You have Charmspeak and a future-seeing dagger and, uh, that horn thingy that can uh..."
Sophia folded her hands, saying drily, "Shoot pineapples. Absolutely terrifying. Run for your life."
Ginny and Sophia took Raydon into the hallway so that he could continue to have his mind blown in private.
"Well, that was something. Which leads to our next problem. You guys know that I'm not evil, but what about the rest of the school?" Percy furrowed his eyebrows, staring at us, "Apparently I killed a frog?"
"It was a toad," I quickly corrected him, "But that's beside the point. Percy's right. The entire school's against him, even some people from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. How do we fix this?"
There were no ideas, not even from Piper. Percy pressed his palms to his temples, groaning. "Annabeth would know what to do. I can't believe she's not back yet." Percy took a deep breath and looked all of us in the eye one by one. "I think it's time that we told them, all of them, what's really going on. Who I really am. They deserve to know. Especially after all that's happened."
Piper laid a hand on his forehead as if checking his temperature. "Well, he doesn't have a fever, so he's not delusional. Maybe he's actually not being insane." She frowned at him, getting serious. "You know Chiron didn't want you to tell anyone."
Percy nodded slowly. "Yeah, but I've done so much damage already since coming here. I destroyed a hallway, broken up some friendships, and killed a frog-"
"Toad," I corrected again, even though it didn't matter at this point. He continued.
"I've brought on a threat that I know the wizards won't be able to fight off." Percy started to fidget nervously with his bedsheets. "The other students don't even know about it. They need to know about it. Otherwise we really don't stand a chance."
"But you know Chiron will never agree to this," Piper countered, "You've already pushed it by telling Raydon, Ginny, Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Sophia, he's okay with, since she's a demigod, but maybe some things are better kept to ourselves, Percy."
Percy smiled mischievously. "Simple," he replied, "We go to a power higher than even Chiron."
"I'd bet there are a couple of things we could say that would make even the king of the gods bow at our feet."
<*~*~*~*>
Only an hour later, all of the students at Hogwarts had gathered in the Great Hall. They all stared toward the front of the room, where the demigods, or god, in Piper's case, Harry, Ron, Dumbledore, and I were standing. But it wasn't us, or even Piper that they were staring at.
No, they were staring at Zeus, the Lord of the Sky, and King of the Gods.
"Hi," Percy started nervously, "All of you know me as Percy Jackson." There were a couple of unplaceable boos from the crowd and even more glares. Even so, he continued. "But no one knows me as Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, god of the seas."
Piper elbowed him roughly as a clamor broke out among the wizards, much like I'd imagine Annabeth would do if she were here. "You skipped a part," she muttered under her breath, "And by part, I mean your entire life story."
Percy groaned, but listened to her. "What I'm about to tell you is ridiculous and fantastical. But I would swear upon the River Styx that it is all true." The voices stopped, so Percy grew more confident.
"I'm a Greek demigod. Half Greek god, and half mortal. There's a reason that Ancient Greek and Physical Combat are required subjects this year, and I hate to say that I had anything to do with the creation of a class, but that's my fault." Percy stepped forward, dragging Piper with him.
"I'm the son of Poseidon, and she's the daughter of Aphrodite. The difference is that I'm a demigod, and she's a, cue unbelieving gasps of narrow minded mortals, god." Just as Percy said would happen, the wizards started to gasp and call him a liar.
"QUIET!" Zeus roared, "Listen to the demigod before I fry your mortal minds!" That shut them up fast.
"She didn't start out a god, though," Percy said now that there were to be no more interruptions, "Only last August, she was a demigod just like me. She's a hero, and when you save Olympus the way she did, you get offered godhood."
Piper cut in, "But when you save Olympus twice like Perseus Jackson, you get offered godhood twice. Of course, when you act like an idiot like Percy Jackson, you decline it twice." Percy made a face at her when everyone stopped to look at each other incredulously.
"It started before I even knew what was happening," Percy admitted to the wizards, "I strangled snakes when I was in preschool. I saw things that no one else did. I never understood it. Not until I was twelve, at least."
"For a demigod, a monster or a satyr finding you is liking getting your Hogwarts letter when you're Muggleborn. Except our way is much more dangerous than an envelope. My Algebra teacher was one of the Kindly Ones. My best friend, Grover, is a satyr. He's the one who found me and brought me to our haven, Camp Half Blood. On the outskirts of the camp, my mother, Sally Jackson, was kidnapped by Hades and I fought the Minotaur, alone, without any training. That was only the beginning."
"Following that, I've been a part of many prophecies, adventures, and battles. I've fought almost every monster taught to you in Professor Di Angelo's Ancient Greek class, who, by the way, is the son of Hades. I fought Ares, the god of war. I jumped off the St. Louis Arch, travelled to the Underworld, killed Medusa like my namesake Perseus, and retrieved Zeus's Master Bolt and Hades's Helm of Darkness that same month with Annabeth and Grover. Annabeth is the daughter of Athena."
"The next year, I discovered I had a brother, Tyson, who was a cyclops. I fought Laistrygonian Giants, sailed through the Sea of Monsters, otherwise known as the Bermuda Triangle, and retrieved the Golden Fleece to save my camp. It revived Thalia, daughter of Zeus, who you might remember joined us for one of our classes."
I had never seen Percy so serious. Hearing his tales for the second time, even if they were summaries, was no less awe-inspiring than the first. Prophecies were like daily occurrences where he came from. The fight for their life begins the moment they're born. I grew up with two parents who loved me and couldn't have been prouder of me for going to Hogwarts. How many demigods lived in a household that didn't want them? How many grew up in an unstable environment because the gods couldn't be bothered to look out for all of their children?
"When I was fourteen, Thalia, Annabeth, Grover, and I went to Maine to retrieve the di Angelo siblings. Now, their story is Nico's to tell, but I'll tell you this. Annabeth was kidnapped. I met Rachel Elizabeth Dare, who grew to be the Oracle of Delphi. Thalia joined the hunt, and I held the sky in place of the Titan Atlas in order to free Annabeth and the Moon Goddess Artemis. Two of the bravest people I knew died on that quest. But here I am, still alive."
"Kronos was on the brink of rising. Luke Castellan was presumed dead by everyone but Annabeth. There was only a year left before I turned sixteen and the war truly began. So I trekked through the Labyrinth of Daedalus with Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson. We found the lost god Pan. Daedalus, who had still been alive at the time, died. There was a huge battle at Camp known as the Battle of the Labyrinth. I blew up Mt. St. Helens and landed on Calypso's Island. At the end of all of that is when Nico brought me the most insane plan I had ever heard. But it was our only chance at success."
"I was still fifteen, but there wasn't much time until the final battle. I took a dip in the River Styx, making me practically invincible. I blew up a boat, but along with it, one of my friends. The battle had begun. The gods and cyclops worked together to take down Typhon, the father of all monsters. Meanwhile, the demigods defended Olympus, what is known to mortals as the Empire State Building. Kronos was defeated by his host body, and suddenly the war was over. As is a demigod's luck, however, a new one started within a year."
Piper took the chance to take over the story. "Percy had gotten himself kidnapped by Hera, sending the entirety of Camp Half Blood into chaos. That's when Jason, son of Jupiter, Leo, son of Hephaestus, and I were found by Gleeson Hedge, a satyr. After our prophecy was delivered, we flew across the country on a dragon named Festus. We fought wind spirits, encountered King Midas, and freed Hera. Then we realized where Percy Jackson might be."
Percy continued from there. "I was at the Roman Camp, Camp Jupiter, in place of Jason, who was their praetor. By the time I had woken up from my eight month long nap with amnesia, it was June, and Gaea, Mother Earth, was rising to destroy us all. Hazel, daughter of Pluto, and Frank, son of Mars, needed to go to the land beyond the gods, otherwise known as Alaska, to free Thanatos, the god of Death, from his chains and make it back in time to protect camp from the giants. So we did. We freed Death, fought Amazons, and I regained my memory in a deathly gamble against someone who could see the future. I was named Praetor by the time the week was through."
"Later, I was reunited with Annabeth, and we, along with Jason, Hazel, Frank, Piper, and Leo, flew to Greece in the Argo II. We needed to get past the gods, the giants, and the Romans, who had been angered by an attack by eidolons on their camp, and stop the rise of Gaea. Along the way, Jason was stabbed straight through the torso by an imperial gold sword and survived. Annabeth faced off against one of her mother's oldest rivals and recovered an artifact lost for millennia and survived, and Annabeth and I trekked through Greek Hell itself, Tartarus."
"Needless, to say, Gaea is gone, but a new threat is rising. Much like the attack on Camp Jupiter, that vaporous figure that disappeared into me during the second Triwizard Tournament Challenge was an eidolon, and it has been wreaking havoc in Hogwarts through me. But that is long gone. Our opposing force is Steven Umbrano, child of Hades, who died decades ago at the hands of Zeus, who stands behind me. He's out for revenge, and he is going to enslave the Wizarding Community to get it. I don't know how, but it will be soon, it will be precise, and it will impact you like not even Voldemort did."
Zeus looked furious behind Percy. He obviously remembered the deceased boy and was outraged. Likewise, the wizards were bristling.
"No way a filthy half blood could enslave us," someone from Slytherin sneered, "And stronger than He Who Must Not Be Named? As if."
"We have magic," someone else reasoned, "Surely we can take a single person."
The rest was a jumble of words that I couldn't hear clearly. "Look," Percy called again, "Ancient Greek Magic is much stronger than what you have now. Think of it like a watered down Coke. Hecate blessed the founders of your school centuries ago, and now it's a knockoff of what we have at the two camps. Steven's taken over the rest of the Death Eater forces and is coming for us. I just don't know when."
As if on cue, the wall on the far side of the Great Hall was knocked down in a spectacularly horrifying blast. Steven marched through the hole with dozens of masked figures behind him, smirking. "Well, Perseus," he sneered, "If you don't mind, I'd like to begin my invasion now."
All wands were drawn and pointed at him, yet he seemed unfazed. "Please, put down your petty little sticks," Steven taunted, "It will make it that much easier for all of us." Not a single person moved. Instead, there were various balls of light shot his way that simply dissolved into his bronze armor.
"Steven Umbrano," Zeus boomed, "By order of the Olympian Council, you have been sentenced to death for traitorous activity against Olympus. Stand down, and perhaps you will not return to your father fried to a crisp."
Steven smiled. "Ah, Zeusy, is that any way to treat an old friend?" He took a single step forward, spreading his arms out. "And I'd prefer to stay out of my father's realm until I can at least send you there first." He turned his palms upward, making the shadows rise and dance on the wall, as well as a long fissure appear in the floor of the Great Hall.
"Then you leave me no choice," Zeus bellowed, his Master Bolt appearing in hand, "Be gone!" His bolt, crackling with intense electricity, was hurled across the room, straight at Steven. He did not move, either because he was too shocked to react to it, or because he was accepting it.
The bolt passed right through him as if he wasn't even there, instantly killing a five of the Death Eaters behind him. Zeus was shocked, his mouth hanging open and his eyes wide.
"Tsk, tsk, Zeusy," Steven scolded condescendingly, "You couldn't have possibly thought that that would work again." There was no response from the King of the Gods, who still stood there as if Medusa had petrified him.
All of the water rose from the cups, and the Black Lake at Percy's command, freezing into a single spike and crashing down upon Steven's head, quickly followed by some of Percy's firebolts. Steven continued to stand there calmly, the spike impaling the floor where he stood, but not harming him and the fire dissipating against his armor.
"Still, you do not understand, Perseus Jackson. I am shadow. And you cannot defeat what you cannot see or feel." Steven smiled evilly and raised his hands above his head a cruel laugh escaping his lips.
All at once, mist began to rise from the floor in the shape of human figures. They sunk into the skin of the surrounding wizards, drawing screams that were cut off abruptly as their minds were taken over.
We backed up, shooting spells that went right through the vaporous figures and into the far wall. "We can't stop them," Percy gasped, "They have no substance."
There were too many of them, and now that they had taken over the other students and teachers, there had to be two dozen of them still advancing upon our small group, cornering us.
I turned my head, seeing three disappear into Ron, Ginny, and Raydon. Everywhere, there was nothing but destruction as the wizards were sent about to turn Hogwarts to rubble.
Percy's eyes glared at the remaining eidolons. He looked back at us, sorrow in his green eyes. "Percy," I whispered, suddenly realizing what he was about to do, "Don't do it."
He smiled weakly at me. "I hope you've forgiven me," he said softly, "And I hope you can stop me." With that, he ran through the rest of the mist, forcing all of the ghosts into his body until there were none left.
I looked around at the only friends I had left, worried. It was down to three of us. Harry, Sophia, and I. Well, four it you count Annabeth, who should be back any day now.
"Now!" Steven yelled, not seeing us in the corner, "We march upon Olympus!"
Percy's POV
I am Percy Jackson. If you are seeing this, congratulations, you're still alive. But I might not be for much longer. The spirits that had risen from the ground were much more powerful than the simple eidolon that had been inhabiting me only hours before.
I am under the control of multiple phantoms and I don't know what Steven will make me do. Storming Olympus will be the first thing on his agenda, quickly followed by the rest of the world, I'm sure. And who ever does see this, I have only one suggestion.
Run.
Because no one is safe.
Not from me, anyway.
