Chapter 7: Practice
Jason held my arm as he taught me how to fly. I would stumble here an there, but he would hold on to my arm tight so I would fall. after a while he let go, and watched me fly on my own. The glory of having the wind against my face as I flew without anyone's help, only lasted about 30 seconds, before someone calls my name from below. It frightened me so much, that I went spiraling towards the ground, like a fighter pilot.
Thank god that Percy caught me on a cloud of water, to cushion my fall. It was like a slide made out of water. I went sliding onto the ground. I was half laughing and half coughing and choking. When I caught my breath, I looked up to see Chiron standing there.
"Come with me for five minutes. I need to ask you a something." he demanded pulling me to my feet helpfully.
Once we were out of earshot of my friends, he asked, "When will you be leaving for the quest. It must me in the within this week, at least by Sunday. That will give you today, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to practice."
"Ok, I guess. We will leave on Sunday." I repeated him.
"You can go back to practice now." he said.
I walked back to practice, wondering why he asked me over because it was more like he was telling me the answer to his own question. Not asking me and listening to my answer.
"What was that about?" Leo asked.
"Oh, he just wanted to know when we were leaving on the quest. Which by the way is Sunday, so you guys have enough time to teach me how to fight." he explained. "And fly." I added because Jason was looking at me sadly, but then he brightened up.
We got right back to practice. This time I was way more focused. I actually flew around in 10 circles in a row, AND landed without stumbling. The thing I didn't say yet was how long it took to be able to do that. It took me all day to finally be able to do that. In fact, tomorrow we will be practicing a little more. But instead of flying lessons it will be controlling lightning.
Eventually, I got super tired from practice, so we all went back to our cabins. The second my head hit my pillow, I was out like a light.
The next morning, I woke up late. I had to rush to breakfast. Why didn't Jason wake me up? He probably thought I looked peaceful because my dreams were't nearly as bad as yesterday's dreams.
"Ey guys. Practice again today guess?" I ask them, once I get to my table.
"You got that right." Leo winked at me patting the seat next to him.
I sat down and choked down my food, so we could hurry up and get to practice.
We ran to the field with me in the lead. I was super excited to get to practice.
"OK. Clover today we are starting with summoning lightning." Jason says, walking backwards on the field to talk to me. "I'll demonstrate."
He takes out his coin and flips it. When it landed back into his hand, amazingly it turned into a long golden staff.
"Wow. That's different. Oh well. Whatever, here we go..." he thrust his spear up into the sky. The sky darkened, and a bolt of lightning struck his spear. He directed it towards a young elm tree. When the bolt hit, the poor tree turned black and rumpled to dust.
My mouth was wide open, dumbfounded. We all clapped while Jason bowed, to be funny.
"Your turn." he pointed at me. "Now do as Zeus said, and think f what you want your ring to turn into."
I had completely forgotten about the small band around my finger. I studied it while walking up to Jason. Then, I thought of a spear and the ring grew into a perfectly weighted spear in my hand.
"Good. Now think of lightning nothing else. And just copy what I did." he reminded me.
I did just that. I thrust my spear into the sky just like Jason, and the sky darkened. Lightning connected to the tip of my spear. I would've cheered, but I didn't want to lose my concentration. I pointed it at tree, but instead of striking the tree, it hit the grass a few inches from Leo.
"EEEK!!!!" he screeched. Then scowled at me.
I shrugged and apologized.
"Ok, good. Let's try again, but instead try not to kill anyone. I'll guide you this time. Ok?" he assures me. I nod in agreement.
Jason grabs my arm at strongly thrusts up, again. The sky darkened EVEN MORE. A GIGANTIC lightning bolt struck down into my spear. Jason guided my arm as I directed the strike towards a tree. IT WORKED!
"YAY! I did it! Took me two tries! But I did it!" I cheered.
"Ok. Now try doing it on your own." he Jason said smugly.
"Fine, I will. And I will rock it!" I chimed.
I did it again, with sweat beaded on my forehead, and down my neck. I really wanted to prove him wrong, for an unknown reason. My spear lit up when the bolt struck it. I flinched a little at the light, but I kept my concentration. I directed it towards another tree. It struck... BOOM! I looked at the tree and saw the tree in blake dust where it used to be.
I looked back to my friends they were all wide eyed and open mouthed. Then they snapped out of it and started clapping instead.
"Great! Now you can use the rest of today to learn how to do sword play, or fight is what you called it." Jason said. "Percy you start with her.Only because we all know you are the best sword fighter here." We all nodded in agreement. I have never seen him fight before, but I am just going to take everyone's word for it.
"Can someone at least show me first? Like give m an example?" I asked hopefully.
"Ok fine. Annabeth come up here. Go with Percy." Jason gave in.
Annabeth unsheathed her long white dagger. She walked up top Percy, nodded at him, and got into fighting position.
Then, they finally started. It was hard to see every move they made, that's how fast they were moving. I was really surprised how they weren't getting tired.
After about 10 minutes of non-stop fighting, Annabeth missed dodging Percy's fast flying sword, and her blade went flying. He hit her with the flat of his blade, then put the blade to her throat. As expected, Annabeth had lost.
"Nice job. You actually held up for quite a while there." Percy said smugly.
"Shut up." she laughed. He reached down his hand to help her up, because she was now kneeling from the hit with the flat of his blade.
"Clover, you've seen a proper fight now. Are you ready to try?" Jason asked.
"I guess..." I said, unsure of myself.
I walked up to Percy, to show them my skills before they teach me anything. Within 3 seconds, I was crumpled on the ground. Well I failed. Don't you think?
I groaned as Jason helped me up. "Everyone do whatever practice, and if we need you, we will call for you." Jason told everyone.
Everyone walked way to do, whatever, will I continued to learn how to sword fight. I learned how to block, strike, disarm, and flee. The fleeing part I think was just for fun because it's kind of common sense on how to flee.
"Pretty good. You catch on fast." Percy sounded impressed.
"Yeah! Great!" Jason shouted from where he was sitting in the grass with a mouth full of bread. Why bread? I don't know.
"Ready to try on someone?" Percy asked.
"Sure. Who is the worst sword fighter?" I ask confidently.
"Uh.... Let's see......" he scratched his chin. "That would be Leo actually."
My heart did a flying leap, making me feel dizzy. Leo? What if I hurt him? Eh. No matter how bad he is, he is probably still better than me anyway. I guess I could gve it a go.
Percy called Leo over to us. Leo walked over smirking at me. That was seriously getting really creepy.... He has GOT to stop doing that.
"Sup. I knew you'd need me." he wriggled his eyebrows at me.
"Yeah, your now my opponent. Percy says...... Well it may be insulting, but he says you are the worst sword fighter here. So you should try against me." I explain.
"Whatever. At least he didn't say anything about my awesome engineering skills. Then we would have problem." he shrugs it off smiling.
I laugh and bring up my sword/ring. Leo asks Percy if he can borrow his sword, cause apparently he doesn't have one. That put up my spirits a little because at least I knew he hadn't had a lot of practice if he didn't have a sword.
"Good luck, I am getting pretty good at this." I smiled.
"GO!" Percy shouted, because we were just standing there, holding our swords, and staring at each other.
That shocked us back to reality, and we went into action.
I deflected all of his blows with ease. I could see him tiring after the first minute or two, but I was just getting started. We he slowed don enough for me to slam into him hard with the flat of my blade, I hit. He collapsed, and clutched his stomach where I had smacked him.
"PERFECT! You should try something a little harder than him, I assume." Percy congratulated me.
I reached out my hand to help Leo up, and he gingerly took it, like he was waiting for me to help him up. I had to pinch him, so he would let go of my arm.
"Nice job. I knew you'd beat me." Leo patted my shoulder.
"How 'bout I go against Frank?" I asked.
Percy and Jason both scowled, but then Percy said, "Are you sure? You know he is a so of the WAR god right?"
That hadn't occurred to me, but I still wanted to give it a try though.
"Yeah." I piped up. Totally lying though.
"Ok. Suit yourself. Go for it." Percy said, shocked. "Leo, go get Frank, and tell him to come over here."
Leo nodded and rushed off to get Frank. I could see a small limp from the hard hit I did gave him. Opps.
Once Frank got to us, I was ready to fight again.
"Ok, ready?" Frank asked.
"Yup." I said as we started up.
He was by far way better than Leo, but I could feel myself gaining on him.
Eventually, I disarmed him, and his spear went flying, and I shouted, "HA!"
"Nice job. If you can beat Frank, I think you are doing pretty good for yourself. Don't worry about anything. You will learn more as you do it more and more." he congratulated me, again for the second time.
I shook Frank's hand and he walked away.
"Since we finished practicing early, doesn't that mean that we can go on the quest early?" I ask.
"No. You could use all the practice you can get." Jason told me. "Percy, you can go now. And so can you, Clover."
"Ok. So just do..... Whatever?" I ask and they nod.
I run off to wear I see Leo fiddling with some metal on a blanket.
"Whatcha' doin'?" I accidentally freaking him out to the point of him throwing his tools in the air.
"God d-" he looked up and saw me. He instantly put a smile on his face. "Why you watching me work? Aren't the others more interesting?"
"Not really. I've seen people fight before, but not this." I was half telling the truth. I mostly just wanted to come over to Leo.
He sat down looking shocked and continued working. I of course plopped down next to him, and looked at his work.
"What you making?" I ask curiously.
"I don't know really. Something will come to me..... I GOT IT!" he exclaimed.
"Wait, what do you have?" I jump.
"I know what I'm going to build! You know celestial weapons? And how they can disguise themselves as a pen, coin of backpack?" I nodded as he continued. "Well, I have never tried to make a sword or anything that can do that. So, I'll make one! I'll give it to you, since well when you sat down and asked me what I was doing, that's what brought up the idea! Thanks Clover." He hugged me, making a hiver go down my spine. Of course, it was only a quick 'Thank You' hug, but I wish it lasted longer.
"Can I help in anyway?" I asked unsure.
"YUP! Go to the Hephaestus cabin, and ask them for any leftover scraps, like celestial bronze, or really any metal. Give them this note, so they know you re helping me." he scribbled down a note saying, 'Let her in- Leo Valdez.
"Ok. I think I know where the cabin is." I said shrugging. I hope.
I ran to the Hephaestus cabin, and they thankfully let me in. They rounded up a whole bunch of metals and through them all into a wheel-barrel.
"Thank You." I told them as I left back to the field, for Leo.
When I got back to Leo, he was waiting for me then laughed when I stumbled while pushing the barrel.
"That's perfect!" he yelled. It better be. Does he know how hard it is to push this thing?
"I might even be able to make multiple ones! Hmmm..... That may take an hour or two. I got like five hours. I'll be good." he decided.
About 2-3 hour later, he was finished. He made two. One for me and one for himself. Unsurprisingly, ours were matching.
"Sorry they only way to use all the metal, was to make them matching." was his excuse.
"Ah, it's alright." I reassured him.
"Ok.... Hey isn't it dinner time?" he asked.
"Yeah, I think so. Wanna go?" I asked him.
"Sure. I'm starving! They don't feed us enough here!" he helped me up.
I laughed. "You know you ask or what you want right? And how MUCH you want, too right?"
We laughed the whole way to dinner, forgetting to tell the others.
"Do you think the others will notice?" I ask.
"Maybe. Only if the are hungry, otherwise they are just wasting food." he joked.
When we got our food, we scraped a potion of it into the fire as an offering to our godly parents.
After dinner we went back to our cabins. Like the gentleman he is, Leo walked me back to my cabin.
"Thanks for my swordy-bracelet thingy, by the way." I wave to him.
"No problem. See you tomorrow!" he said goodbye and left.
For the next few days it was the same, until it came to Saturday......
