Chapter 9: Relaxing
So, someone pointed out the age difference between Skye and Percy. While yes Percy is like nineteen I always thought of Skye being like, mid-twenties so between twenty-three to twenty-five sort of. I don't know for certain if I'm going to do Percy/Skye or not.
I let Skye sleep in a bit as I grabbed more firewood for the night, I already could just tell by the feel of the air that it might be a bit chilly.
By the time I was back I had a nice armful of wood, both sticks and actual logs, when Skye started to come around.
"How long was I asleep?" She asked through a yawn as she stretched.
"Well, it's like one pm." I said trying to be helpful and ignore the startled look on her face.
"That late? Why did you let me sleep in?" she asked quickly getting dressed as I fixed some late breakfast, with eggs, toast, and a bit of sausage that probably won't taste the best but will do.
"Because you're going to need your strength." I told her as I handed the pile of breakfast to her so we could both eat it on the couch, which now had the blanket neatly folded on the back of the couch and the pillows upright.
"What do you plan on having me do?" she asked looking nervous.
"First, we're going out on the pond and catching some fish. We won't eat them, but it will help relax your mind." I told her remembering when I was distraught and how Fury would take me fishing just to calm me down.
"I thought...I thought I was going to be using my powers?" Skye asked taking a bite out of her toast looking confused.
"You will, using your powers you will isolate to one part of the pond to make it shake, it'll scare the fish toward our direction." I told her calmly even when I saw her flinch a bit, she was terrified of these powers.
Calmly placing my food on the small table beside the couch, I put on of my hands over hers, "I promise you, nothing bad is going to happen out here. You aren't going to hurt anyone, you won't hurt me. I trust you." I said looking directly into her eyes which were staring intently at mine.
"If you're sure." she said uncertain and I nodded, removing my hand and getting off the couch, I placed the empty plate into the sink to be cleaned later.
"Are you ready?" I asked her and saw that she had a small boost of confidence as she grasped my hand and pulled herself up.
'We won't know until we try right?" Skye said grinning but I could see her nerves running amok by the look in her eyes.
"Remember, this is just so you relax and get attuned with the place around you. If you really don't want to, we won't use your powers. I just think it'll help you concentrate." I said and saw her look conflicted.
"I...I want to try." she said as we walked out of the cabin, I instantly let my water powers around to scan the area, so far there were only animals and no humans, good.
Slowly, I got the smooth wooden boat that was larger than a normal wooden boat, but small than a motor boat.
"Whoa, I didn't expect this." Skye said as she felt the smooth, old wood, "I built this, I was probably eighteen and got bored. Fury helped of course but he knew nothing about building a handmade, wood boat." I said remembering him glaring at it while I sanded the wood.
"How do we get it into the water?" Skye asked because he no doubt saw that there was nothing to connect the boat and bring the heavy ship to it.
I gave her an amused look, "You aren't the only one with powers remember." I joked and flicked my wrist easily as gallons of water rushed past us and lifted the boat easily.
Skye's mouth was open in shock, releasing this was my first time showing her my powers, I walked slowly, half-dragging the shocked Skye along, as I set the boat into the water gently.
"I thought you only had earthquake powers." Skye said but still looked amazed at how much ease I was at it, how I barely felt any strain.
"I have two powers, I wasn't given powers like you were. I was born with them, I just happened to have a few." I shrugged not feeling the need to mention that I can also talk to any horse family or fish for that matter.
I helped her onto the boat easily enough and soon we spent the time, relaxing under the sun, fishing and releasing the fish all the while working on pinpointing on specific area of the water to make it vibrate.
"Close, but relax. You're too tense. Trust yourself." I said rubbing at her tense shoulders, if she kept them like that they're going to seriously hurt.
"I can't." She said her face betraying the feeling she was alone for the first time.
"Hey." I told her softly and had her face me, "Close your eyes." I instructed and saw her just do that, "Just listen okay. Good. Do you feel the wind blowing on your face, throw your hair as it's gently carried by it. The swishing of the trees and the falling acorn that landed softly on the ground. Do you feel the smooth surface of the boat under your surface as it gently swayed on the lake." I said making the water a bit wavy, "do you smell the fresh air around you, take a deep breath, and just let your mind fill with the freshness of the air. Now focus back to the water, the gently swaying back and forth, back and forth, the sun gleaming off the surface, how in just one of the corners that was seems to ripple and you can feel the fish moving underneath you." I let my voice go very gentle and watched the water that I first instructor her to move, ripple.
"Feel the fish swim underneath you, as the boat gently rocks and the water ripples softly, like a cradle being rocked back and forth.
I stopped the boat swaying just a bit and watched as the corner seemed to go from ripples to gently creating small waves, 'You're doing it." I told her and watched as she slowly opened her eyes and watched the corner of the water.
"What..." she looked confused but just stared at the gently flowing back and forth water, until it slowly grew slower and went back into being still.
"What I just did was help you focus on your other senses, you're so focused on your sense of sight that it blocked your powers from being connected. Seeing it happen is what caused it to go on so long, because your powers connected with all of your five senses all around you, connecting you to the lake and forest. That's what powers do, they connect and help you feel around you." I said softly and saw her look content in what seemed like weeks.
"How'd the boat rock back and forth?" Skye asked once I was returning the boat back to it's place after cleaning it up a bit.
"I moved the water." I said gently and saw her smile.
"It was pretty awesome, I never felt more connected than that." she said smiling brightly, seeming to get over her fear of powers for now.
"Come on, I'm sure you want to talk to Simmons." I said and saw Skye brighten a bit more, I knew she was a bit homesick but I still had to watch time.
Because I don't know why, but I felt as if something might be coming soon, the air felt a bit tighter than before and I made sure to extend my senses until it reached the electric fence and out just a bit.
