naomi, this is for you. #clasher4life

Annabeth Chase didn't fear many things. She had been scared, she had been unsettled, she'd been frightened, but it wasn't often that she was terrified.

That horrible, gut wrenching feeling of not being able to catch your breath, not feeling your heart beat for slow, agonizing seconds, not having control over your body. And by then, it was too late to do anything. To be frozen, so unresponsive at the one moment it mattered most - that could leave you completely shattered.

She'd never felt so helpless. Just standing, watching, capable of nothing but cowardice.

Why did things have to go so wrong?

Annabeth had failed him. In the second he'd called for her, yelled for help, she'd stared in fear.

And done nothing.

Now he was gone, and she was on her knees, crying uselessly because he was gone. For good this time. Percy had always helped fix her mistakes, but this one had cost him his life.

"Annabeth!"

That would remain the last thing she'd hear his beautiful voice say, the last time she'd see his lips move. And it had been pathetic. His hand had reached out for her, just as they'd always had, and she hadn't been able to catch it like he caught hers.

And oh gods, it hurt. The sound of her own sobs had numbed her ears, because she could only see his own terror, seizing the green of his eyes and the calm tone he always had. All gone.

Annabeth barely felt the hand on her shoulder, and almost ignored it. But then a thought pricked at the edge of her mind. It was foolishly hopeful, something she never was. She was so messed up right now. So she turned, tearing her head from her hands and waiting for the comforting soft gaze she'd get, the little smirk that seemed to say see? I lived. I always bounce back.

He did. He did! He always bounced back, he always made his way back to her. So he could do it again.

But it was just Piper. There were no soft, sea green eyes. There was no cocky grin. There was no relief.

Percy was gone.
