"Seaweed Brain, this doesn't feel right."
"I'm telling you, Wise Girl, it has to be really tight. Just stomp a few times, you'll get used to it."
Annabeth stepped on her foot hard, doing as he instructed so that her feet were more comfortable.
"It still feels like the circulation is being cut off."
Percy rolled his eyes. "Come on."
Annabeth accepted his outstretched hand and stepped onto the smooth wooden boards.
When she finally found herself balanced on the roller blades strapped to her feet, Percy started forward, pulling her with him.
Annabeth watched his feet, trying to copy his smooth movements.
She'd spied him skating a few days before, watching how he'd gone backwards and kept his balance so well. He'd been out with friends, and Annabeth happened to be passing by. The way he skated was so fluid, so swift and smooth, yet hard and rough––it was almost like watching him sword fight.
She'd brought it up to him after, and Percy had said he wanted to share it with her.
So this was where she found herself––hardly on her feet, grasping Percy's hand for dear life.
Percy smiled at her. "Waist and below. Don't try to move with your arms."
Annabeth realized she'd kind of been flailing her arms to keep balance. "Whoops."
Percy gestured to the clumps of people skating around them. "Watch the way they turn." He demonstrated himself. "You have to trust that you won't fall when you lean."
Annabeth watched him again, but when she tried it, the wheel of her blades caught on the floor. She just barely grabbed onto Percy's arm with a death grip before falling.
"I am not doing that again."
Percy chuckled and helped her balance herself again. He turned himself around, still gliding on the floor, and grabbed both of her hands.
Annabeth raised an eyebrow. "And I hope you don't expect me to do that."
Percy shook his head, smiling. "Nope. Just have fun."
Annabeth was about to respond when a more...experienced skater flew past them, causing her to yelp instead at the close proximity.
Percy easily dodged the boy, tightening his grip on her hands. "That'll happen a lot," he explained.
Annabeth pouted. "That's not fair."
Percy nodded. "It isn't," he agreed. "But that's how it is."
When it came time to turn again, Annabeth yanked Percy back next to her and cautiously stepped in a semicircle.
"There," she said. "Works just as well."
Percy laughed. "Well, if speed isn't your concern, then yes, it does."
Annabeth tilted her chin up in mock pride, earning another laugh from him.
They watched as a woman spun in a tight circle, her arms emerging from her blurred form in an elegant position.
Annabeth snorted. "What I wouldn't do to see you try that."
Percy gave her a look. "Yeah, no."
She laughed. "Fine. Let's go get pizza."
Percy helped her up the step at the edge of the rink, bowing and calling her "Milady."
Annabeth shoved him away, watching as he only just caught himself. "Hah."
Percy stuck his tongue out. "Fine. You can make your own way to the table."
Annabeth glared at him.
Percy crossed his arms and held his ground.
Finally, Annabeth relented and reached her arms out for assistance.
Percy smiled triumphantly, knowing he wouldn't be so happy later, but grinned nonetheless.
When they settled at the table with their pizza, Annabeth pulled Percy's hoodie on. "So. Where'd you learn to skate?"
Percy sipped some cherry coke. "I'm mostly self taught. I had a friend, back in one of the many elementary schools I attended, who was pretty good at it. He showed me the basics, and I went from there. It's actually one of my first times doing it for a while," he admitted.
Annabeth looked at him when he turned towards the rink, watching people speed by. "How come I'm only just finding this out now?"
Percy turned back towards her. "It never came up," he said sarcastically.
Annabeth rolled her eyes. "For real! Why haven't we done this before?"
Percy popped a piece of pepperoni in his mouth. "You like it?"
Annabeth shrugged. "I'm obviously new to it, but everything takes practice. And you said it yourself––it's for entertainment purposes. Plus, I like learning from you. I feel like I'm in a class at Camp."
Percy laughed. "Alright, alright. We can do this more often. Truth is, if I had known this place was here before now, I probably would've dragged you down here sooner."
Annabeth smiled. She brushed her pizza-crust-hands on her pants. "Okay. Let's go around again."
Percy beamed and stood on his blades, helping her stand as well.
"We should bring my mom next time," he said, balancing her on the wooden surface. "She came with me once, a few years ago, and it was hilarious."
Annabeth looked up at him. "You are cruel."
"Maybe," he shrugged.
Almost as if it were planned, they both leaned in further, their noses touching before their lips met.
That was why Annabeth loved spending time with Percy. It was so natural.
It was also how she ended up on her butt as a small boy swerved in front of them.
