Oneshot #16: oh gods Serena is back
Hey demigods (or cats)!
I had to give a mortals meet a try. Sorry if it's sucks XD
Hello, world.
Why am I talking to you?
Great question. I'm sure you're awesome, but really, don't I have better things to do?
Obviously not.
Anyways, I'm here to prove to the world of Goode Highschool that Percy Jackson is a phony.
(Hey Percy! Love you, man.)
My name is Nova Cadwell. I go to Goode Highschool, and I'm the school's journalist.
Now, we're all familiar with the 'popular' stereotypes, the jocks and the nerds.
Percy Jackson is none of those. He has the potential, yes, but I guess he just doesn't realize it. So he spends his time with nobody's, people who aren't on the popular or unpopular scale.
They're just somewhere in-between.
That's me.
I'm the in-between nobody.
Nice to meet you.
Percy is one of my good friends, and yes, he will forever be a friend.
What that moron (in the nicest way) doesn't realize is, I'm onto him.
Because of his looks, his "potential," you could say, he draws quite a bit of attention.
Remember those populars I mentioned earlier?
Yeah, them. They can't seem to stay away. It's like he's a magnet, drawing the cruel metals (aka the populars) closer with each day.
Oh, look. Stuck-up paper clip at 12 o'clock.
"Percy!"
Gods, it was Serena.
Percy, who sat next to me, scribbling in his notebook, sighed quietly. "Nova, help."
I laughed. "You're on your own."
In reality, I was watching his every move, taking notes, and drawing conclusions.
I'm not a stalker. I'm just--observing for good reason.
Serena pulled a chair out from under the table and sat across from us. "Oh, hey," she said kindly to me. "Who are you again?"
I held out my hand. "Nova. Pleased to meet you," I said, boredom laced throughout my words.
Serena ignored my hand.
"So, Percy, what're you working on?"
I had to admit, Serena was one of the better ones. She wasn't completely obsessive, but she was confident that she had Percy wrapped around her perfectly manicured finger.
"Uh, Physics. Mr. Rogers is--"
"Cool," Serena interrupted. "So, what're you doing this weekend?" She was acting so innocent, it made me want to gag.
"Oh, nothing much. I was planning to take Annabeth canoeing, maybe hang with Grover a bit..." He lost himself in his thoughts, and I held back a snort.
Serena raised an eyebrow. "Annabeth..." She feigned thinking. "Oh, yeah, I remember her! She's your sister or something, right?"
Percy blinked. "Serena, you know full well that she's my girlfriend."
I noted the way he clenched his fist when he said "girlfriend."
Serena stood, shouldering her bag. "Sure, sure," she said absentmindedly. "So Saturday?"
Percy just shook his head and turned back to his notebook.
When Serena was out of earshot, I nudged him. "Girlfriend, huh?"
Percy rolled his eyes. "Nova, I'm not going to go through this entire conversation again."
"Then don't," I stated simply. "Admit it--Annabeth isn't your girlfriend."
Percy fingered his capped pen. "Grow up, Nova. I wouldn't lie about something like that. There are other ways to get Serena to go away."
"From what I heard, you'll be seeing her every soon."
Percy looked up at me, smiling. "Shut up."
---*cries* Bob Says Hello---
"Alright, cupcakes!"
I sighed as the stubby man walked from side to side in front of us.
We were in gym class, my least favorite time of the day, waiting for the boys to finish dressing out.
"I'll be subbing for you today, you can address me by Coach Hedge."
A chorused mumble echoed throughout the large, empty gymnasium.
"I need a volunteer to start off the game."
Someone from behind (suspiciously sounding like Serena) called out, "Nova!"
Coach Hedge studied us. "Alright, Nova."
I just stepped forward, brushing off the way I was singled out.
You get used to it.
Just then, the boys locker room burst open, and boys came stumbling out.
Percy was talking to another dude, but they broke apart when he spotted me.
"What are we doing today?" He whispered.
"Kickball, I think."
I think Percy failed to realize that we were the only two standing apart from the group.
"If it isn't Percy Jackson."
Percy's head snapped up. "Gleeson?"
"Who else, cupcake?"
"Why're you here?"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm your substitute."
"Oh. Makes sense. Is there...?" He trailed off.
"Yep. I'm here to, ah, recruit them."
"Oh. Cool."
I watched the entire exchange with narrowed eyes.
Percy knew Coach Hedge, Hedge knew Percy, and they both knew something we didn't.
Yeah, I wasn't connecting any dots.
"Well," Coach said gruffly, "You're my volunteer for the boys, Jackson."
Percy glanced at me. "And Nova?"
"The girl's."
"Got it."
I elbowed Percy. "Did I miss something?"
Before he could answer, Coach blew his whistle and announced that we were playing kickball.
Called it.
--Time skip brought to you by Monster Donuts--
"I'm slightly confused."
"Okay," Percy responded. "What do you want to know?"
We sat in Physics, minutes before the last bell of the day would ring.
"How did you know the Coach?"
"Met him at summer camp."
Makes sense. But I still didn't understand how he connected to Annabeth.
How did I know that?
Well, I may or may not have eavesdropped on a conversation. A little.
The bell rang, and we both shot up.
"See you tomorrow, Nova."
"Yeah, bye."
He made a beeline for the door.
I walked casually, but I didn't turn left like I usually did.
I was following Percy.
Serena wasn't too far ahead of me, obviously following him as well.
I laughed to myself, and when I finally got outside, I scrambled to get behind a tree.
When Percy was being confronted by Serena, I grabbed a textbook from my bag and placed myself on a bench.
A girl sat to the right of me, also watching Percy and Serena, but her book was not covering her face in an attempt to blend in.
I pretended to read, and it was then that I realized I would never grow up to be an actor.
"You're book is upside down," the girl beside me noted.
I quickly flipped it around, laughing nervously. "Right."
I turned to face her.
A mass of blonde curls were thrown up in a ponytail, and piercing grey eyes stared straight into my own brown ones.
I must've been staring, because she held out her hand. "Annabeth Chase."
I raised an eyebrow and shook it. "Nova. Nova Cadwell."
She nodded and closed her book for a moment. "Does this happen to him a lot?" She gestured to where Percy was detaching his hand from Serena's.
I chuckled. "Quite often. It's amusing, really."
Annabeth laughed. "You know him, then?"
"Yeah. We hang out." I fingered my jeans. "And you're his girlfriend, right?"
She nodded. "So it seems."
I studied her. "Are you guys, like, actually dating?" I inquired.
"I would hope so."
"You are sassy," I noted.
"That's what happens when you spend time with that goofball."
I agreed, and we laughed.
"You're pretty cool," I concluded. "I have to go now, but I'll see you around?"
"For sure," she smiled.
I stood and grabbed my bag.
When I made it back to my tree, Percy finally got rid of Serena and spotted Annabeth.
He walked over, and for the first time since I'd met her, Annabeth put her book away.
They talked for a minute, and when Percy took Annabeth's hand I may have slightly awwed. Slightly.
I kept my distance, but walked behind them.
I couldn't stop smiling at the way they laughed together, how Percy joked like crazy, at one point even getting down onto his knee as Annabeth pat his head. I caught the word, "peasant."
Eventually, they calmed down, stopping right outside of a coffee shop.
I figured they were going to head in and that was my cue to leave, but when they stood there further I stayed where I was.
Percy gripped her hand and said something in answer to a question Annabeth had asked.
I couldn't hear what they had said, but Annabeth was clearly taken aback.
Percy rubbed the back of his neck and repeated it, and when he smiled Annabeth jumped on him, the hugest grin I had ever seen plastered to her face.
When they regained balance, Percy gently brushed her hair from her face and kissed her, and my heart straight out melted.
My phone buzzed, the caller ID reading Ben, and I realized I'd forgotten to call him and let him know I'd be late.
Oops.
But, honestly?
It was worth it.
Oh, and if I'd learned one thing, it's that Percy isn't a liar.
A/N: Hehe I'm really not happy with this, but it's an update, so here you are.
Now, you might be confused as to why that whole Coach Hedge thing was in there. Any guesses? →
I may or may not use Nova as an original character in a pjo fanfic in the future. Idk.
Nova Cadwell has been a character I've used in prompt writing pieces before, and I'm happy I was able to use her.
Anyways, sending lots of blue cookies!!
Peace out in demigodishness and all that,
~ Grace 💙🍪💙🍪💙🍪
