Nobody's Sidekick

Nobody's Sidekick

"Hope you finally learn to drown, Seaweed Brain." Annabeth sneered, hands on her hips defiantly.

"Hope you finally come up with a good plan to win tonight, smartass." Percy teased back.

"You're impossible." She pointed a finger at him. Percy only smiled back amused.

"You're impossible."

"Woah, original" She huffed, "I'm so winning tonight."

"You're so not." He chuckled.

"If you really think that you even have the slightest chance to win, you're even stupider than I thought."

"Beware, pride comes before the fall." Percy commented, sticking his tongue out at her.

She rolled her eyes, "You still don't know how to put your armor on correctly after five years. It's all crooked." She adjusted a few straps and straightened his helmet. She looked in his eyes through his helmet, she had to control herself not to kiss him right now in front of their teams. She patted his chest. "All done. You can't look messy when I beat your ass. Good luck, Seaweed Brain."

Percy flashed her a grin. She almost melted on the spot. But she acted like it didn't do anything to her at all and raised her eyebrows in challenge. They stared at each other for a few seconds, but neither of them were backing down.

"Oooookay. Enough." Leo interrupted, coming between them and trying to pull Annabeth away. "Before you start fucking right here."

Everyone burst out laughing. She saw Percy get really red as he always got when he was embarrassed. She only laughed along with the others, Leo did have a point. She loved them like this. She loved that Percy never backed down from a fight, even against her.

Annabeth tried to act tough and annoyed and rolled her eyes again and walked back to her team with Leo, leaving Percy.

See, this was one of the rare times where Percy and Annabeth were on opposing teams at capture the flag. They were both team captains and dead set on beating the other. Things always got pretty heated. They roasted each other the upcoming days, they tried to keep their strategies a secret, supplies were flooded; all in all, Annabeth freaking loved it.

The game was about to start. While she was talking strategy with her team, her eyes and thoughts wandered off to Percy. He looked simply gorgeous while talking to his team. He had a serious expression on and was waving with his hands, trying to explain something. As if he felt her eyes he looked up and spotted her looking. He grinned at her and winked, before going back to talking to his team. That boy was going to be the death of her.

-

"Okay this is what we're gonna do." Percy started explaining, "Annabeth is expecting me to try and take the flag. So we're going to use me as bait." He explained the rest, it was quite simple really; Annabeth was way too prideful, her hybris, and he was going to exploit that.

When he was done explaining his strategy, his teammates nodded and smiled. They really got a chance of winning today. He didn't underestimate Annabeth one bit however, he knew her better than anyone else and wouldn't dream of underestimating her.

Before he knew it they were heading towards the woods and the game started. He'd put a strong defense and a small team that would try and capture the flag. He would go alone into Annabeth's territory to try and get as much attention as possible and lure everyone away from the flag so his attack team could snatch it and win.

So there he was, Riptide drawn, and crossing the river. He tried to get as close to the flag as possible, to get as many people fighting him. He'd felt Annabeth's presence as soon as he'd left the water, but acted like he only noticed when they were deeper into the woods.

"Hey Beth. No need to hide." He greeted. "You're too beautiful to stay invisible." He flirted, feeling bold.

She pulled her cap off and looked more amused than annoyed.

"You're so predictable, Seaweed Brain. Going after the flag on your own? Classic Percy Jackson move. Always the hero."

He wanted to laugh, she was falling for it. Finally he had a good enough strategy. He suppressed his grin with all his might. So he shrugged and tried to look disappointed, acting wasn't his strongest suit, but he hoped that Annabeth wouldn't see through him.

To avoid that she would, he made a run for it. Acting like he was fleeing from her and making a dumb and desperate move for the flag. Annabeth started chasing him and started screaming for her teammates for help. He smiled to himself, his plan was working out better than he could've dreamed. Campers appeared behind trees everywhere and started chasing him as well.

He got quite far, further than he'd expected. While he was fighting some campers and running away at the same time, he tripped over a trap wire. He groaned in pain and spit out some grass. An impressive number - around ten campers - surrounded him, weapons drawn and pointing at him.

Annabeth walked up to him and kneeled down next to him. She put her knife at his throat. "Face it, Seaweed Brain, there's just no beating me. I knew you were going to pull a stunt like this."

He tried to look disappointed, but apparently he really was a bad actor, because Annabeth frowned at him. "I've intercepted your plan, why do you look smug?" Then realization dawned on her face. That face was all worth it, even if he'd planned to play it out a bit longer to give his team some more time. Her mouth dropped open, "This- this is part of your plan!"

She immediately jumped up, "Everybody, go check our flag!" Percy saw his chance as she was distracted right now and sweeped her feet away under her with his arm. He put a knee on her chest and his sword at her throat, though he wasn't putting too much pressure on her, just enough that she would stay put.

Most people had already run away to try and save their flag, but the few campers that were still there looked nervously around, not knowing what to do.

"Put your weapons away and surrender, or you're without your captain." Percy threatened. Annabeth didn't look scared one bit, she only rolled her eyes as she always did when she was annoyed, or more accurately; as she always did when she acted annoyed. He knew that she was impressed and maybe even a tiny bit scared for her ego.

"Like you're going to kill me." She challenged him.

"Of course not, but I can keep sitting like this until the game is over. My team can manage without me, they know what to do. But since your team has to change their entire strategy, I'm not so sure yours can miss you. I'll release you if these campers surrender and withdraw. It's up to you, Wise Girl."

She looked up at him furiously, her grey eyes were a deadly storm. He only stared back at her, challengingly. He had her at a checkmate and she knew it.

"Do as he says." She called out to her team. Less than a second later he heard weapons clattering to the ground and they walked away.

He got off of Annabeth and stood up, offering her a hand. She didn't take it and stood up by herself. He rolled his eyes at her stubbornness.

"Admit that you're impressed." He teased. She dusted herself off, "I'll deal with you later." She muttered before running away. He laughed at her, Gods, he loved her so much. He ran in the opposite direction that she went, he didn't bother to tell her that his team would already be much closer to the border than she probably thought.

He ran into his team and joined them. They were already there, but he heard indignant shouts from his side of the river as well, he hoped it was the sound of Annabeth's team who couldn't get the flag and not his team who had lost. He could see the river and knew they were so close. He helped them fight Annabeth's campers. They were really angry.

One of the new campers, John, a son of some minor god, pushed the flag into Percy's hands, "Run to the border. We'll hold them off here." He wanted to argue that someone else should get a chance, but Percy knew, when a golden opportunity appeared, you had to take it.

So he ran, probably the fastest he'd run since Tartarus. Before he knew it, he crashed into the water where he had been claimed all those years ago. Cheers erupted all around him from his team, paired with the disappointed grunts of Annabeth's team. He jumped up and let out a triumphant scream. His team hoisted him up on their shoulders and started chanting his name, this really wasn't good for his ego.

He was smiling from ear to ear, his arms up in the air. The flag raised high. Annabeth emerged from the woods, she tried to look sour, but she also looked proud. When he was put down again he immediately ran over to her, he pulled his helmet off and dropped it to the ground, he stopped just before her.

Annabeth also took her helmet off, but as the good girl that she was she still held it, she smiled and offered her hand, "Well played, Seaweed Brain."

He rolled his eyes and laughed at her formality as he pulled her into a kiss.

-

Annabeth took her loss fairly well. If she was going to lose from anyone, Percy was the best for the job. And she really was impressed with his strategy. He pulled away from her, she wished she could have snapped a picture of this moment. The look in his eyes, his crooked smile, hair messy from his helmet and him in his armor was killing her. He looked so hot it was unfair to everyone else in the world.

He gave her one more kiss, a quick one, before he was pulled away by his teammates, all celebrating him. Other campers from Percy's team mingled with hers, all talking about the game. Everybody shook hands civilly, congratulating the winning team and the losing team on their best efforts.

Annabeth did the same. Eventually a group of new campers surrounded her. Percy was too far away to hear anything, talking busily. She had introduced these guys to camp. She was chatting with them mindlessly, when one of the new guys, John, suddenly sneered at her, "Hard to get by without Percy, isn't it?"

She frowned, "I get by without Percy perfectly fine."

He raised an eyebrow, "Why didn't you win then? You are his sidekick for a reason."

Her hands itched to take her knife and stab him. Or punch him or at least do something. But she decided to be wise and fight him with words, "If I were you I would take that back quickly. I don't need Percy, I'm not his sidekick nor anyone else's."

"I have to admit that you're quick witted."

"Well thank you." She laughed and began to walk away and call it a day.

"Something ought to remind you though," He called her back.

"What?" She turned around and looked at him sharply. She put her hands on her hips, challenging him.

"You're nothing without Percy behind you."

All the chatter around them turned silent for a second before people started whispering about what was just said.

"What did you say?" Her voice was wavering. She couldn't believe what she'd just heard.

"Oh you heard me just fine."

She was about to open her mouth again or maybe even punch him, when Percy walked up to them and called her name.

"Daddy's calling." John said nastily he smiled and looked at her, daring her to do something. Percy joined them and stood next to Annabeth, he was going to say something, but before he could Annabeth launched at John, not really thinking it through. She would've attacked him, but Percy grabbed her by her waist and pulled her in his arms before she could do anything.

"What the fuck!" He cried out, Annabeth was fuming and didn't reply. "What's wrong?" He asked the group.

"I don't know, man, your girlfriend just attacked me out of nowhere." John replied, with fake shock. "Must've been because she lost, but I don't know."

"Oh my gods, you piece of shit, you-" Annabeth shouted and started cursing in Greek.

"Okay, walk it off!" Percy said, pulling Annabeth away from the group. She was still yelling and cursing as she was dragged away, she knew she was making a scene, but she couldn't help it. She was just so angry.

After a minute or so, they were far away from the group. He stopped walking and held her shoulders and looked her in the eyes. He looked so confused that it would have been almost adorable if she hadn't been this angry.

"What happened?"

She shrugged his hands off his shoulders and brushed past him, her shoulder pushing him aside. "Jerk." She mumbled.

He jogged after her, catching up with her quick enough. "Hey! What's wrong? Did I do something?" She didn't say anything but just walked ahead, tears were pooling in her eyes, something that made her even more upset. She shouldn't let this asshole get to her.

"Come on, what is this?" He called after her, confused. "Everything was just fine before you talked to them."

"Just get lost. Mind your own business." She snapped, she knew it was unfair to lash out at him. Percy didn't do anything wrong, besides supporting her and having her back. But she couldn't help it, even when she knew she was being unfair.

"You're upset." He stated, still following her.

Yeah, no shit sherlock.

Apparently he had enough of this. He grabbed her arm, stopping her and turning her around to face him, "What's wrong?" She tried to pull her arm free, but though he wasn't hurting her, his grip didn't loosen one bit. He reached his other hand out and gently touched her face, wiping tears away. She pursed her lips, but didn't pull away.

"Come on, we're alone here. You can be vulnerable with me." He cooed. He was right, they had left everybody behind. She tried to pull away again, but he still held her.

"Percy let me go. I need to be alone for a minute." She said a lot calmer than she felt. He let her arm go immediately, but still held her face.

"Okay, I'll be in my cabin waiting for you. You don't have to deal with this alone. I can help you."

The problem is that you're always helping me. She thought.

After she nodded he gave her a reassuring smile, kissed her cheek and left. She walked further into the woods, as far as she could go while being safe from any monsters. She sat down on a log for a while, but quickly realized how ridiculous it was to sit here all alone, moping. She wiped her tears away, swallowed a few times and took a few shaky breaths, before going towards Percy's cabin. It was already dark and everybody had gone to bed.

He was sitting on his bed, but as soon as she walked in he stood up. She didn't have to say anything. He just held his arms out for her and she fell into them. She sobbed into his shirt, soaking it. This made her feel more stupid, like she was proving John right by being comforted by Percy.

She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to shut all those negative thoughts out.

"Please tell me what's wrong." Percy pleaded. "I just don't understand what happened. Did someone do anything to you?"

"John told me that I was nothing without you. That I'm just your sidekick." She muttered into his chest, while sobbing.

"He said what?" Percy exclaimed, letting her go and looking her in the face.

"Percy don't overreact." She pleaded.

"I'm going straight to that asshole and tell him that if he ever talks to you like that again I-"

"And that would make it better?" She cried out, grabbing his arm to stop him. "You threatening him won't make any of this better."

"He can't talk to you like that."

"You're only proving his point." She replied calmly.

"But he said-"

"I don't care right now Percy!" She shouted at him, taking him aback, "Because what you're doing right now is just as bad. You're only proving to him that I'm some little girl they only have to listen to if her boyfriend is standing next to her! It'll just make everything worse."

"I don't get why it will make everything worse. He just needs to learn that he needs to respect you!"

"He won't! He will only respect you!" She screamed back.

His face softened and he grabbed the hand that was squeezing his arm tightly and gave it a kiss. "I'm sorry. I know that you can handle this. It's just hard to see some douchebag treat you like shit and know that I could do something about it."

"I know that you struggle with that. But you can't fix all of my problems. I know you want to take away all my problems, but these are my problems and my life." She paused for a second, looking deeply in his eyes. "It is my life. And I know you mean well, but if my life is going to mean anything I have to live it myself."

He closed his eyes, trying to calm down for her sake. He pulled her into a hug. "You're nobody's sidekick, Annabeth." He whispered into her curls. She took a shaky breath and clawed her hands into his back for comfort, he hugged her back just as tight.

Annabeth stayed in his cabin that night, Percy fell asleep after a couple hours, but Annabeth stayed awake the entire night, thinking. Lights seeped through the curtains and she heard the sound of campers heading to breakfast when she finally felt sleepy enough to try and take a nap.

That was exactly the time Percy woke up. He yawned against her shoulder and tightened his grip around her waist. They were sleeping in Percy's bunk bed, so the space was limited. But she liked this the best, when they had no choice but to hold each other close.

He muttered a "Good morning" against her ear, his voice still groggy from sleeping. She turned around in his arms to face him, he looked gorgeous as ever, her stomach clenched as it always did when she saw him, she realized once again how lucky she was to have him.

"Good morning, Perce." She greeted back. "How did you sleep?"

"Meh. I didn't have too many dreams. And you?"

"Just fine." She lied, she didn't want him to worry too much.

"You didn't even close your eyes, did you?" He asked, apparently there was no fooling him today. She pursed her lips and shook her head.

"Do you want to get some breakfast?" He asked, she wasn't really hungry and would rather skip, but she knew Percy was probably starving as he always was.

"I'm not hungry. But you should definitely go." She told him.

"You sure?"

"Yes, Seaweed Brain, I'm sure. I'm heading to the Athena cabin to freshen myself up." She smiled and gave him a quick kiss before getting up, leaving his warmth and comfort behind. She looked at him, his hair was sticking out everywhere and he was smiling goofily; she loved him so much.

She put her jeans from the night before back on again, pulled a hand through his hair, even though she knew it was useless, waved to him one more time before walking out.

-

Percy ate his breakfast alone as he always did when Tyson wasn't there. He munched on some pancakes, he spotted John across from the pavilion, but reminded himself of what he promised Annabeth. He ate breakfast as quickly as possible to not be around that guy any longer than necessary.

He grabbed an apple for Annabeth to eat and stood up to his table. He was headed towards the Athena cabin, Annabeth would still be there probably. But something was bothering him, he kept thinking about his conversation with Annabeth last night. He had never once thought of Annabeth as his sidekick and someone to only respect if he was with her and he absolutely wanted to smash everyone's head into a wall if they did think like that about her, but did they? Or was it just John?

He decided to take a detour and ask around. He saw a random camper, a son of Hermes he thought, he was around 15 years old. The boy was still sitting at his table and was alone, so he was a perfect victim for Percy's little investigation.

-

After a long shower and some fresh clothes Annabeth decided to get breakfast after all. Breakfast was almost over, but she figured she could still quickly eat an apple or something. She ran into some people who were already heading back to their cabins, nobody said anything to her about last night. There was probably already another rumor that got everybody's attention.

She was almost at the pavilion when she saw Percy was about to head out, he had an apple in his hand, she hoped it was for her, and was about to wave at him to get his attention when Percy walked to another camper. His name was Tim, a son of Hermes. Annabeth quickly put her cap on, she was not in the mood for chitchat with a random camper.

"Hey where's Annabeth?" Tim asked Percy.

"Oh she's uh, taking a nap. I just went to get her some food." Percy stammered out the excuse. She almost laughed at Percy and how cute he was, but that would mean she would blow her cover immediately, because even if Percy was a dumbass sometimes, he would definitely know.

She could literally see Percy's brain churning as he came up with an idea. "Can I ask you something?" He asked the camper. The guy nodded and Percy apparently took that as an invitation to sit down across from him.

"What do you think of Annabeth?" Percy genuinely asked. She was annoyed that he asked some rando about her, but also curious where this conversation was headed.

"Oh, you know her much better than me. I'm sure I can't tell you anything new about her." Tim had probably heard the rumors about Percy; say one bad thing and you're dead.

"Probably, but I want to know how you see Annabeth. You can be completely honest. I won't kill you or anything." He joked. The camper laughed nervously, but did go on, "Well, she comes across as smart and pretty if I'm being honest," he glanced nervously at Percy, who didn't seem to care. "But she can also be really intimidating. I've gotta say that your girlfriend is scary as hell, dude."

Percy chuckled, "Yeah she is. But she is also the sweetest girl I've ever met."

"Annabeth's sweet?" The camper asked in disbelief. Percy laughed again and grinned. "She would do anything for me. People just misjudge her all of the time."

"Yes, I guess I did. But I still can't imagine it."

"Well maybe she isn't sweet in a typical way, but for example she forbids everyone from uttering even a word to me about Tartarus and all that shit. She doesn't know that I know about that, even though I wouldn't really mind people asking, I appreciate that she's being so protective. Or when I can't sleep, she always stays up with me."

"Well you sound lucky to have her."

"I truly am. And I know that she looks tough - and believe me she is, but she's also really fragile. She'd kill me if she were here." Oh yes, she would.

"Would you listen to her if she asked you to do anything? Even if she wouldn't be my girlfriend?" Percy pried.

"Yeah, definitely. She saved the world multiple times, she's a badass."

Percy nodded as if he was happy with the answer he got. "Well thanks man." Percy stood up and clapped the guy on his shoulder.

"You're weird, Percy Jackson."

Percy only laughed. "So I've heard." And he walked away towards his cabin with the apple in his hands. The minute Percy was 'alone', he suddenly threw the apple in her direction, she was surprised but did catch it. "You can take your cap off, Wiss Girl." He told her, he had a smug smile on his face.

Shocked, she pulled her hat off and stuffed it in her back pocket. "How did you know?"

Percy shrugged. "I just felt your eyes on me."

She rolled her eyes, took her cap off and took a big bite out of the apple.

"You were there for the entire conversation, right?" Percy asked, walking next to her, hands in his pocket.

"Maybe. Apparently I'm a super sweet badass."

Percy laughed and pulled her to his side. "Yeah you are."

They burst out laughing together, if only things could be like this all the time.

-

It was a few hours later, Annabeht was busy on her laptop, designing some new temple or whatever. Percy decided to blow some steam off in the training arena. On his way he saw John. He could feel his blood begin to boil, but he took a deep breath and ignored him.

John waved at him, but he also ignored that. What a dick. Percy couldn't help it but bump his shoulder as he walked past him.

"Hey man, what's your problem?" John called after him. Percy should walk on, but he couldn't resist it. He stopped and turned around to face him. His hand went in his pocket to clench Riptide. Most of the campers surrounding them had probably heard of the drama and quickly walked away, whispering.

"If it were up to me I would've already dragged you to the lake and drowned you a long time ago. But Annabeth wants to handle this herself."

Without anything else said, Percy walked off to the training area. He had just only beaten his third opponent in a sword fight, when Annabeth came storming in.

"Hey Wise Girl," Percy greeted with a grin. He was obviously being an idiot, because anyone else could've told him that she was angry at him.

"You asshole!" Annabeth yelled and stopped just before him. His opponent, Ray, quickly hurried off with some lame excuse. Good for him.

"What did I do?" He cried indignantly.

"I just heard about your standoff with John. You promised me that you wouldn't meddle. But you just can't help it, can you?" Her eyes were like a storm and though he should be scared, he couldn't help but think of how hot she was right now.

"Standoff is a big word for the record. I only bumped his shoulder and told him that if it was up to me that he would be dead now. But I did say that you're handling this yourself!" He defended.

Annabeth stared angrily at him, "You promised, Percy. John is part of the problem, but you're the biggest problem in this whole situation." And with that she stormed off.

He wanted to defend himself again that he didn't do anything wrong, but even he wasn't oblivious enough to believe that. He sighed, stuffed Riptide in his pocket and went to search for her.

He found her sitting at the docks by the lake. Her feet were dangling in the water. Her hair was loose for once and he smiled at how pretty she looked like that. He sat down next to her. He had no idea what he could say, so he didn't say anything at all.

"Did you even listen to a word of what I said last night?"

He frowned and looked at her. "Yes, of course I did. It's- I saw him just hanging around and I couldn't help but get so angry." He started defending himself, but while he was talking he realized how stupid he sounded, "But that isn't your point." He filled in himself.

She bit her lip, looking down at the water. He grabbed her hand, trying to comfort her. He just wanted to take all her problems away and knowing that he couldn't do anything for her right now was killing him.

"I shouldn't have said anything to him. I should've let you handle it alone. But-"

"I know, Percy." She interrupted him, "You meant well. You always do. Your intentions are never the problem." She rubbed her temple with her free hand in frustration, "I did overreact. I shouldn't have gotten this angry at you just now."

"And I shouldn't have meddled." He intertwined their fingers and squeezed her hand. "At least we're both wrong." He joked and to his delight, she chuckled and squeezed back. She scooted closer to him and rested her head on his shoulder. They sat like that for a while and he knew that they were okay.

-

Annabeth had decided to let it be. Going out of her to confront John wasn't the smart thing to do. Guys like that wouldn't listen anyway. So whenever she ran into him, she just acted like she'd never talked to him before. She could see that it drove him crazy.

She got her revenge a week later. She was teaching sword fighting to some younger and new campers, John was among them. When she asked for a volunteer to demonstrate how to fight, John eagerly raised his hand.

She accepted gladly. Percy only smiled amused and stood by.

John attacked the second the fight started. Though he was probably stronger than her, he was also much more inexperienced and too blinded by aggression. He wanted to prove to everyone that he could beat her, that she was some nobody and that he was the best. Well maybe another day.

Annabeth played along with him. If she ended the fight too quickly, it wouldn't be much of a demonstration for the other students. So got a few jabs in herself and easily deflanked his attacks. After a couple of minutes of this going back and forth, John smiled as if he was winning, that idiot, and opened his hideous mouth, "Careful girl, your boyfriend can't help you now."

That was it, in less than three seconds she had him on the floor, she was on top of him, knee on his chest, sword at his throat. She was pushing harder than was necessary to keep him there. She grinned at his shocked face.

"Say that again." She demanded and put even more pressure on her sword.

He looked her straight in the eyes, she had to admit that he got some balls. "You're nothing without Percy." He spat.

"I don't need him to kill you, however. So tell me that you were wrong and maybe I won't slit your throat." She whispered, she pushed even harder on her sword, John flinched, a small streak of blood trickled down his throat.

That's what did it. John looked away at the group of campers, surrounding them. Percy just looked back at him and raised his eyebrows as if in question of what John was going to do now. Still looking away, John muttered, "You were right, I was wrong."

"You need to look at me." Annabeth only responded coldly, if she was doing this then she was going to do this right.

He looked up at her, "You were right." He muttered begrudgingly.

She smiled content. She lightened the pressure of her sword and patted his cheek with her free hand. "You finally get it." Then she got off of him, pulled a piece of ambrosia from his pocket and threw it in his lap as he was still sitting on the ground.

"Lesson's over, guys." Annabeth told the other students. Percy was doubled over in laughter. John stood up and stumbled out of the arena following the other students, leaving Percy and Annabeth alone.

Percy had calmed down a bit, he was smiling at her from ear to ear. "You're amazing." He told her, she smiled back and walked up to him. She sheathed her sword and walked up to him. He offered her a bottle of water, which she accepted and gulped eagerly. He held his own bottle in his hand and looked at her.

"You were so sexy just then." He commented, making her blush. Percy only said stuff like that when it was only the two of them, the butterflies in her stomach were going crazy. She stopped drinking and smiled.

"Told you I could do it myself." She put her water bottle down and took a step closer to him so that their chests were almost touching. She grabbed one hand and started playing with his fingers.

"Never doubted you one bit." He replied, he bit his lip and she knew that he was trying his best to control himself. She didn't care one bit about control, he was almost more embarrassed than she was anyways. With her other hand she softly grabbed the back of his head and pulled his head down so she could kiss him.

Yes she was Annabeth Chase, her own person and nobody's sidekick, but it didn't bother her one bit that she was with Percy Jackson.
