Meeting The Folks
Meeting The Folks
"Just go yourself! I am not going with you!" Annabeth screamed at Percy as they paced through the house.
"Annabeth, it's your father. Family is important." He calmed trying to grab her hand to sooth her, but she yanked it away.
"I don't care, he is no family to me anymore. He doesn't deserve it."
"Come on, I thought that you had made up with him and Helen. And don't you want to see your brothers? I just want to meet your family. See where you grew up."
When Percy had suggested to visit her family in San Francisco she had practically exploded. And now here they were; pacing around the house and Percy trying to convince her to go.
"You know where I grew up? Camp. You've already been there. If you want to see where I grew up let's go to camp."
He sighed, now getting tired of this pacing so he grabbed her by her middle, sitting her down and the couch and him sitting on the coffee table, so he was facing her.
"Wise Girl-" He started, but she snapped at him. "Don't Wise Girl me."
"Annabeth," He grabbed her hands softly and kept eye contact at her, even though she tried the death stare; he wasn't afraid of her. "family is important and you should forgive him. It is important to stay in contact with them."
"Easy for you to say." She muttered. "What?"
"You have this great family! Sally, Paul, Estelle, even Poseidon! You're his favourite son. And I? Athena treated me like shit when I was younger and never even paid attention. My mortal family replaced me as soon as they had the chance. So no, that side of my family is not important. Maybe you think about it differently, but you have it easy with your family. Everything comes easily to you! You just have this great mother, father, stepfather, sibling and amazing upbringing-"
Percy tensed up at this, remembering not so amazing memories. He stood up and began to pace, needing to let his anger go.
"Maybe you didn't have the easiest life, but that doesn't mean that other people didn't have an easy life, Beth. You can stop the personal attack, I know what you're doing. I know that you're only doing this as some sick strategy to get me to become angry so that we won't talk about it anymore. Well you know what? This is what it is; I'm still going to see them. So you can join me and swallow your pride or stay here alone for awhile."
He walked in a fast pace upstairs having said what he wanted to say and not wanting to turn this fight into a bigger one.
"Where are you going?" She ran after him as he walked to their bedroom at a fast pace. "Percy wait! You can't just stop talking and run away!"
"Well, look what I'm doing now." He spat back stuffing some clothes in a bag. "Percy!" She shouted again, but he ignored her.
"Percy!" She shouted again, yanking at his shoulder. He was in pain for a moment, but he ignored that too.
"Wow, yanking my shoulder and pain will certainly help." He muttered sarcastically.
"Percy, come on you can't just leave when things get hard!"
"Must you say." He muttered, while grabbing the bag and starting to walk out. But before he closed the door he turned around to look at her again. She was crying now, something that Annabeth didn't do that often.
"I will be back later I just need to cool off some steam." He told her as he dropped the bag and left it by the door.
——————
It was a couple hours later and Percy had cooled down, but he was still mad. He had just walked through the city which normally helped to clear his mind, but it hasn't really helped him that much.
"I thought that you left." She muttered, looking blankly at him.
"Can't get rid of me that easily." He answered, a slight grin on his face.
He found his bag still at the door and saw her still sitting in the same position as when he had left. He set down on their coffee marble so that he was directly facing it.
"Hi, I'm back. Have you made up your mind about what you're going to do?" He asked softly.
"I thought about it too and Beth, it's okay if you don't want to visit your family. But I really want to meet your family and I think that you should make up with them or at least try to and go with me. But if you really don't want me to go I won't."
The tear tracks were still visible and it felt like a stab to his heart that he caused them. She started long at him before starting to talk.
"Would you?" She croaked out. "Would you forgive people that made you feel unwelcome and not at home in your own home? To make you feel replaced?"
"I- I don't know." He answered, rubbing his thumbs over her knuckles.
"Would you forgive Gabe?" She objected and Percy immediately released her hands.
He thought about it for a moment until he muttered, "No. No, I wouldn't."
"Well don't expect me to then." She snapped and turned away from him.
"But I thought that you made up. And what about when you used to watch those old movies with him? Like Roman Holiday. Or when he came to save you when we were 14." He encountered back.
Before she could answer, though Percy didn't know if she was going to anyways, he continued. "Just think about it Wise Girl." He kissed her cheek, though she pushed him away immediately.
---------------------
"Hey." Percy croaked out in a sleepy voice as he could feel Annabeth slipping next to him in bed.
"Hey." She replied scooting closer to him. "Can I hold you?" He asked softly.
"Yeah." So Percy pulled her closer to him, happy that she wasn't pushing him away anymore. "You were right, you know?" She muttered into his chest.
"Mmmh?"
"We should visit my family in San Francisco. I want to try again."
-------------------
"You ready?" He asked as they stood for the door of the Chase's household. He squeezed her hand softly and gave her an encouraging smile.
She smiled and squeezed back before knocking on the door. The door opened, showing Annabeth's family. Mr. and mrs. Chase were standing on the front engulfing Annabeth in a hug. So he let go her hand and stood next to them awkwardly.
"Hey, wow you got old." Percy said to Bobby and Matthew who were 18 now as Annabeth had told him.
"Yeah you too. You were 14 when we last saw you right?" Bobby asked, shaking Percy's hand.
"Yeah, a long time ago." He moved on to Matthew shaking his hand as well before he felt Annabeth standing next to him again.
"Hello mr. and mrs. Chase." Percy straightened his back a bit and shook their hands. They were different from his mother, though they still seemed loving and caring for Annabeth.
"Dinner's almost ready so you can just sit down in the living room or get your stuff upstairs." Mrs. Chase said after a brief silence. They nodded. "Okay, where do I need to put this?" He asked as he held their luggage up.
"Oh you can take it to Annabeth's room." Mr. Chase began, but mrs. Chase interrupted him. "We thought that you would want to sleep in the same bed."
He and Annabeth both nodded gratefully and went upstairs to put their stuff away. As soon as the door closed, he started to talk to Annabeth.
"Well that went great right? How was it to see them again?" He asked enthusiastically.
"Oh fine." She commented sitting down on her bed. "What? Fine you were all hugging and happy to see each other."
"Well yeah." She mumbled, smiling.
"See?" He gently pulled her into her hug, gently swaying around.
But Annabeth broke their happy moment with one sentence. "My father doesn't really like you though."
"Are you serious? I didn't think so."
"Nah, maybe it's just me worrying." She tried to assure him, but his mood was already somber now.
"Hey cheer up Percy." She tried, "At least Helen seemed to like you, and my brothers and I really really like you."
He let out a chuckle and kissed her.
Quickly after that they went downstairs to have dinner. Where everything went by smoothly to be honest. They talked about their flight and maybe a few jokes about him being terrified.
"So Percy where are you from?" Mr. Chase asked, looking straight at him and Percy didn't look away.
"New York. Born and raised."
"Because you couldn't already hear that." Bobby joked.
"Haha, yeah I have an accent I know." Percy replied, rolling his eyes and smiling.
"And who from your parents is godly?"
"Oh, my dad. He's Poseidon, you know with the ocean and horses and fishes and-"
"Yes, they get it Percy." Annabeth cut his rambling off.
"Cool." Matthew nodded. "Can you control water?"
He nodded, feeling a bit uncomfortable. "I can show you if you want to. But not now I think." He added as he looked at mr. Chase.
"Is Athena fine with you two dating?" Mr. Chase asked, probably talking about his father being Poseidon.
"Oh well..." He started but Annabeth interrupted him, "She's totally fine with it. She really likes him." At that he choked on his dinner, earning him a soft kick from Annabeth.
He didn't really know why it was such a problem if her father knew that Annabeth didn't like him. Annabeth didn't really talk with her mother anymore.
"So how was last Halloween?" Mrs. Chase asked, distracting them and causing Percy to smile at the memory.
Halloween had been a few weeks ago and since Annabeth was a big musical fan she had convinced him to go as Janet and Brad from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Annabeth showed them a picture on her monster proof phone, thanks to Leo, where they were in their customs.
"You two are real dorks." Bobby commented.
"What? Couple customs are fun. Plus we rocked it." Percy replied, high fiving Annabeth.
"And who else should we've gone as? I don't think that I could've rocked Frank-N-Furter or Rocky. Those lingerie and golden boxer shorts wouldn't really look that good on me and our friends wouldn't have appreciated it. Or Annabeth in golden boxer shorts, well I wouldn't mind-" Percy's rambling was cut off once again as Annabeth kicked him under the table.
"So where do you live? Not still with your mother I think." Mrs. Chase asked, breaking Bobby and Matthew's laughter.
"Oh no, we live in New York. It's still close to camp and my mother. Plus we have jobs there." He looked at mr. Chase's surprised face. "And you didn't know that we were living together." Percy's face was redder than it had been in a long time and his mouth was pulled in a thin line. Annabeth kicked him not so softly under the table and Matthew and Bobby fell into a fit of laughter.
"Isn't that great!" Mrs. Chase exclaimed looking genuinely happy. "Right honey? And Bobby and Matthew there is nothing funny about living together."
"No, not about that." Bobby laughed out. "Percy is the funny one." Matthew finished.
Annabeth smiled politely and Percy didn't understand what the big deal was. But he would ask later, since Annabeth would probably murder him if he asked now.
"You know it's funny the way you are Percy." Mr. Chase began and he could feel Annabeth tense up next to him.
"Really? I didn't know there was anything funny about me."
"I do." Matthew chirped in, owning him a glare from Annabeth and mrs. Chase.
"I always thought that it would be better if Annabeth would end up with someone more submissive and someone who would listen to everything she says. And you don't seem like that type."
"Well thank you. Life isn't dull that way, huh?" He replied with a grin.
Though Annabeth didn't take it the same way.
"Dad! You can't say stuff like that! And you know without Percy I wouldn't even be here. So you can better thank him instead of trying to make him insecure and insult him all the time!" She shouted, Percy murmured her name, trying to grab her hand and calm her down. But she already jumped up and stormed upstairs.
"I'm quickly going after her, go on without us." Percy quickly apologised and ran after her.
"Hey." Was the only thing he said as he sat down next to her on her bed.
"I don't know why he is doing this. Normally he's a nice guy." She mumbled out, Percy grabbed one of her hands and squeezed it lightly.
"Can't be easy to not see your daughter in years and when you see her again she comes back with a boyfriend. Who is amazing by the way-" He added, making Annabeth laugh at his joke and he kissed her cheek briefly before continuing, "Just don't be too hard on him, he's probably just dealing with all this for the first time."
Annabeth suddenly shot up, angry again. Apparently his words weren't as soothing as he thought.
"I can't believe that you're standing up for him! He's saying awful things to you, from the moment that you're here. And the only thing you do is standing up for him! Quit being such a nice guy and grow some balls."
Percy's smile disappeared in a thin line. "Wow, thanks Wise Girl. And besides I didn't really mind his words."
"Well maybe it's because you're too stupid to understand the insults."
Percy was used with the fact that Annabeth got defensive and tried to insult him when they were fighting. But this one hit a bit too close to home.
"You know what? Stay up here being grumpy and insulting me, but I'm not going to put up with it right now. I'm going back to dinner with your family." He spat with a bitter tone. "I'm done with you insulting me every time when things get too difficult for you."
"Wait, Percy I'm sorry." She tried to persuade him in staying. "We need to talk this out."
"What? You calling me stupid and that I need to grow some balls? Because I suddenly grew some and am standing up for myself right now." He said sarcastically and left the room.
When he sat at the table again, them almost finished he smiled a thin line, trying to conceal his anger. "Annabeth is coming back later."
They finished the dinner without saying that much. Matthew or Bobby would sometimes begin a topic but then they all fell into silence again. After dinner Percy offered to help mrs. Chase with the dishes, to which she agreed.
"Sorry if you're fighting because of Fredrick." Mrs. Chase commented while he handed her a plate to dry.
"Oh that's fine. It's not that uncommon. But how did you know?"
"Well the thing is that we could practically hear you," At that he blushed a deep red. "plus the fact that Annabeth wasn't coming back and you were slightly angry was also a good sign. But don't sweat it, you two are both young. Are the two of you going to be fine or was it a really big fight."
"Nah, we've had bigger ones. We're likely to make up soon, especially since we're not at home. But if we are, is the guest room still an option for me?"
"Of course. And Percy, for what's worth it; I really like you. I think that you're good for Annabeth, of course we and especially I don't have that much to say in it but still. And don't be bothered by Bobby and Matthew, they really admire you, they just show it differently."
This made him chuckle, thinking back to when he and Annabeth were younger and she insulted him all the time. "Must be a Chase gene then." He muttered.
"And in Fredrick's case, he'll probably come to terms with you soonly. It's just a bit weird for him to suddenly see his daughter with this guy, a really nice one who is like her new family. Normally he isn't like this; he's more a goofy history professor. But things have always been difficult with him and Annabeth. Just give it some time." She advised. Percy thanked her and they finished the dishes with some small talk.
As Percy went to search for Annabeth he couldn't help but overhear Annabeth talking to her father, they were sitting in the living room so it wasn't that he was really eavesdropping. Though yeah, he was.
"Just be nice to him. You don't have to be his biggest fan, but at least accept him. He's my family and I love. If it weren't for him I wouldn't even have come." He could hear Annabeth say.
He could hear mr. Chase sigh deeply. And Percy didn't know if he was going to reply, but even if he wanted to, Annabeth already beat him to it.
"Percy is a great guy and maybe if you would take a little time to get to know him you would know. So if you can't find it in you to try then maybe it's better to leave. And to be honest dad, I really wanted to try to make things better between us."
Percy walked away quickly leaving them alone. As he was still cleaning some things around the table he could feel arms wrapping around him and he knew they were Annabeth's. She leaned into his back and muttered a "sorry" in it. He squeezed her hand that was wrapped around his stomach, signaling that it was okay and that he had heard her.
He softly turned around wanting to see her face again, she changed the position of her arms, sliding them around his neck and softly hugging him. He hugged her back, putting his head above hers, seeing mr. Chase enter the room and gave him a nod, to which to his surprise he returned.
He untangled himself from Annabeth and put his arm around her shoulder.
"Hey, Percy, grab your jacket, we're going out."
"What? Where?" Percy, asked dumbfounded looking to Annabeth if it were her plan, but she softly shook her head that mr. Chase probably didn't notice, but clear enough for him to see that as a no.
"What do you mean that you're going out with Percy?" Annabeth asked, lips pursed and softly pushing him away from her.
As he grabbed his jacket he could still hear them talk clearly.
"You wanted us to bond, so we're going to. I don't know where a bar or something."
"A bar?" Matthew interrupted whatever Annabeth was going to say, with Bobby at his heels.
"Can we come?" Bobby asked, eyes eager. Though mr. Chase crushed that with his answer, "No, you're underage. I'm going to tell your mother." He explained and walked away to mrs. Chase while at the same time Annabeth focused on him again.
"You don't have to go, you know that right?" She reassured her and he kissed her forehead. "Nah, come on, this is going to be fun! Getting drunk with your father." He joked, giving her a wink.
"But you don't even drink alcohol." Annabeth commented as mr. Chase walked back to them. "He doesn't even drink alcohol!" She said, as she turned to mr. Chase.
"Well a strip club then?" He joked before yelling, "Helen! It's a joke! I'm not going to a strip club!"
"I'm going to be fine Wise Girl, they probably have some water there." He kissed her quickly before leaving with her father to a bar apparently.
As they were in the car they were both silent. Actually the whole way until they were actually at the bar and sat down at a booth. Percy didn't exactly know what to say and neither did mr. Chase.
"Sorry I'm new to this." Percy guestering between them. "To this father- and son-in-law thing." He confessed, not knowing if this had any adding value.
"So you don't drink alcohol?" Mr. Chase asked after a while, restarting the conversation after a silence.
"Yeah, not really a fan of it. I had this stepfather and I don't like the taste anyways." He answered with a tight smile.
"I normally don't drink a lot, but I think that I can use it tonight."
"So do you and Annabeth talk a lot?" Percy asked, ignoring the last comment.
"No, sometimes a brief conversation on the phone, but not much." He replied, sipping his drink. "Do you look a lot like your father?" He asked out of the blue, catching Percy off guard.
"Uhm, yeah quite a lot." He admitted, thinking back as when he last talked to his father. Which hadn't even been that long ago, as he had come at his graduating a year ago.
Mr. Chase nodded at this and Percy asked why.
Mr. Chase sighed, "Because I don't get it." He admitted slumping down a bit. "I don't get it that you're a son of Poseidon and that you're such a kind, loyal and even handsome man and not a monster. Not at all how Athena described Poseidon and his children."
Percy choked on his water. "You- uh, you think I'm kind, loyal and handsome?"
"Well I don't really know how I feel about you. But Annabeth talks a lot about you."
"Well Annabeth had trouble with me being a son of Poseidon at first too." He joked, though it was true, remembering when they were 12.
"Really?" Mr. Chase asked.
"Yeah, of course. Have you ever met Annabeth? She almost bit my head off. But on a quest we became friends. And eventually we got together when we were 16 when we didn't die and stuff so I guess that she eventually got over the Athena and Poseidon rivalry."
After that he seemed to relax a bit and the insults thrown at Percy were slowed down. Maybe it helped that there weren't any other people around.
"You don't hit her right?" Mr. Chase asked, a bit drunk Percy guessed. Percy was stunned at this question as how he could even consider it.
"What? No! No of course not! I would never hit Annabeth!" He exclaimed, earning a bit of attention.
"I didn't either. Never. You didn't think that right?" Mr. Chase asked and Percy shook his head no, though it didn't matter as mr. Chase already continued, "But I treated her badly. I didn't believe her when she told me stuff and I didn't bother meddling between her and Helen. You don't treat her badly right? Do you think she can ever forgive me? Because she is kind of mad at me."
Percy chuckled, thinking about Annabeth and kind of wishing that she was here right now. "I think she wants to. She came to San Francisco for you. I'm sure if you just talk to her." Percy reassured. "It would help not being at a bar talking with me."
"Well let's go to her! Come, let's go!"
Percy laughed again. "You know mr. Chase, you're pretty wild for a history professor."
They stumbled to the car as Percy got the car keys and convinced mr. Chase that it was probably better if he drove.
They drove in silence, Percy sometimes saying something or cracking a joke. Until he just turned the music on and jammed to Led Zeppelin. At least if he was going to spend time with his drunk father-in-law he would make the best out of it.
"We're back!" Percy shouted as they walked through the door.
"Oh great, how was it?" Helen asked as she approached them.
"Yeah, mr. Chase got a bit carried away." Percy remarked, seeing mrs. Chase's shocked face.
"Hey, what's going on?" Annabeth asked as she walked around the corner, into the hallway. "Oh my God, you got my father drunk!"
"I didn't get him drunk! Percy replied. "He did it himself and he's only a bit drunk, not totally hammered like you were when-" Percy stopped himself after a glare from Annabeth.
"Thanks for getting him home, Percy." Mrs. Chase said as she took him over from him.
"Yeah, of course. Can't leave him there." He joked as Annabeth walked to his side, putting an arm around his middle.
As mr. and mrs. Chase walked away, Percy wrapped Annabeth into a hug.
"So how did it go?" Annabeth asked.
"Oh, fine I think. He doesn't hate me anymore I think. And he told me that he wanted to make it up with you. It was fine I guess. Wished you were there though."
"Yeah, me too." She kissed him, but pulled away too soon in his opinion. "But it was nice catching up with Helen and the twins."
"Yeah that's nice, but you know what would be nice?" He asked, twirling her around. "Mmmh?" She asked looking up at him with a smile.
"It would be a lot nicer if you kissed me again."
"Would it, huh?" She teased before kissing him again.
"Hey, Annie! Come do you want to watch a movie with me?" Mr. Chase asked as walked into the hallway, making Percy and Annabeth jump apart from each other.
"Yeah, sure dad." Annabeth shrugged as she followed him into the living room. Percy stood there for a moment, leaving them alone.
But eventually he slowly walked into the living room, seeing Annabeth sitting onto the couch, a blanket spread over her legs.
"What about Roman Holiday?" Mr. Chase asked and Percy didn't need to see Annabeth's face to know that she was smiling.
"Do you want to join us Percy?" Mr. Chase asked, looking up at him.
But Percy only smiled widely, "Nah, you can watch it together."
Annabeth turned her head to him. "You can stay if you want." Annabeth reassured.
"I'm a bit tired of tonight so I'm just going to bed."
"Because the hour and a half that you two were gone was really tiring." Annabeth teased.
"Yes, Wise Girl it was." He joked, rolling his eyes.
"Thank you." She muttered in his ear before kissing him good night. "Good night, Seaweed Brain." She said louder for mr. Chase to hear it too.
"Good night, Beth. And good night, Mr. Chase." He told him, waving a bit awkward.
"You know Percy, you can call me Frederick."
--------------
"Care to walk with me Percy and Annabeht?" Mr. Chase asked them, it was the next day and they all went out for a picnic in the park.
Percy had shown his water powers briefly at the little fountain to Bobby and Matthew who were now suddenly his biggest fans.
"Yeah, of course." Annabeth answered, pulling Percy up and holding his hand as they started walking.
Annabeth and her father had kind of made up last night as she had told him last night. She had even woken him up to tell him. They had talked it out and according to Annabeth they had taken a good step into the right direction.
"I need to apologise to the both of you." Mr. Chase confessed. "Especially to Percy."
"Oh, it's fine-" But he interrupted him. "Just let me talk for a moment."
"I always say that to him!" Annabeth said smiling at Percy.
They were still walking, Annabeth in the middle and holding hands with Percy.
"Percy, you're a really nice guy. And though to be honest you wouldn't be my first choice for Annabeth- which is not my place I know that now -" He said, focusing on Annabeth. "But you're the one for her. And I respect that. And I know I don't know you very well but you seem like a nice guy. If I believe what Annabeth says and how you were when you were 14 and how you have been these past few days. I was struggling with how I should act as a father."
"Hey that's what I said!" Percy exclaimed, squeezing Annabeth's hand while she rolled her eyes.
"You two deserve the world, and I love you Annabeth. And I hope that if one day you two get married I hope to be there."
"Well, now that you're saying that," Percy started, letting Annabeth's hand go and bending down on one knee.
"Oh my God." She muttered, already almost crying which she didn't do that often. "Percy-"
"Annabeth Chase, my best friend and love of my life-"
He smiled up at her with the widest smile and she smiled back, "Can you wait a second? I need to tie my shoelaces."
Annabeth didn't say anything and he burst out laughing at her face.
Percy kept laughing as Annabeth stood there for a moment in complete shock.
"You asshole!" She eventually shouted, pushing him over so that he rolled over still laughing hysterically.
After some time, he didn't even know how long it had lasted Annabeth burst out laughing too. He stood up hugging her tightly.
"Aww, don't cry, Wise Girl." He wiped the tears away with his thumbs and hugged her again.
"I really thought that you were going to propose right now." She muttered.
"Yeah that was the point." Percy said back, earning a punch. Mr. Chase had walked away again during their laugh fit as he sat next to Helen again.
"Nah, if I'm going to propose I'm going to do it better than that. Just wait for it." He muttered back, lifting her chin up so she looked up at him.
"Can't wait for it." She breathed their lips inching closer.
"Yeah me neither." He replied, thinking about the ring that he had sought out with Grover a couple of weeks ago who was now safely in the inside pocket of his coat.
But as he had said, he needed to come up with a good way to do it.
And eventually he would, but for now he just kissed her.
A/N
Heyyy, sorry for the long time. I had exams and I was busy with other stuff, like rewriting Famous, which I'm still not done with.
About the story, it's kind of a mortals meet Percabeth. Frederick Chase is a many used topic and I thought that it might be fun to do as well. I hoped I did not rip anyone's other take on this off. I tried not to so if I did it wasn't intentional, but I never read a Frederick Chase one shot like this one I think. I don't really ever saw Frederick Chase as a bad guy and I didn't really wanted to portray him as one here, but on the other hand I kind of like the one shots where he kind of is evil or at least acts like that. I think that he would be struggling with where he and Annabeth stand and that he would kind of act like a dick to the one who Annabeth brought home. Plus I think that Athena would have told him not so nice things about Poseidon so that he wouldn't like Percy at first for that too. I tried to portray him as someone with a hard relationship with his daughter which he tried to fix and with his position as how he should act against his son-in-law. I hope that it come across as such. And him being drunk is maybe a bit out of character but I found it funny and I'm the writer so...
And another thing, so I curse a bit during stories and I was wondering if somebody minds? And if I should do a trigger warning?
Sorry btw if it's a bit too long, thank you for reading! I really appreciate it so thanks.
