Just Hold On To Me
Just Hold On To Me
"Hey Damon, come here!" Percy called as he was crouching down in the sand as he tried to get the interest of his two year old son.
He smiled and rolled his eyes as his son only waddled farther away from him. He looked over at Annabeth who was also smiling fondly.
"Hey Damon," with only one word from his mother he whipped his head around and focused on her. Percy let out a frustrated groan, with only one word from her she got all his attention. Though Percy couldn't completely blame Damon as he did the exact same thing.
"Don't you want to go to daddy Damon? Isn't that fun? Isn't it?" Annabeth exclaimed excitedly and walked over to Damon as she tickled him lightly. "Daddy." Damon cheekily answered and began searching for him, but apparently forgot that he had the ability to turn around because he started crying as soon as he couldn't find Percy, though he was only a couple feet behind him.
"Damon, I'm here buddy. Like right here." He said, a huge grin breaking out on both of their faces as Damon finally spotted him and ran - well he tried to run - to him and fell in his arms, hugging him tight.
"Daddy." He mumbled happily.
"That's me," He replied, "Now, do you want to go surfing with me as I tried to show you?" He asked kindly.
Damon's eyes lit up and he began to listen to his father, though he didn't exactly know what to explain to a two year old about surfing but, "Just hold on to me tight, okay?"
"Anything to add mommy?" Percy asked, smiling up at her, from his crouching position.
"Only that if you drop him, I will kill you."
He rolled his eyes and stood up, grabbing the surfboard on one side and Damon on the other, balanced on his hip.
"That would never happen." Percy argued back, but then remembered the one time that he had dropped Estelle on accident in the water. "But now I'm 29 and not 20 and he is my own son. Plus we're in the water!"
She only smiled, and he knew that she wasn't being all that serious but just reminding him, and walked over to them giving Damon a kiss on the cheek and then Percy. But when he whined about only being kissed on the cheek she rolled her eyes, but did give him a proper kiss.
"Sure you don't want to come?" He asked, she had been very persistent that she didn't want to join them, but he knew her and he knew that she secretly wanted to join them and watch Damon extra carefully. She trusted him, of course, but her mother instinct was always kicking in at moments like this.
"Yes, have fun you two. I'm going to read my book and watch you. And some time alone is good for you two. And I hate surfing."
"Well okay, love you Wise Girl." He said, kissing her one last time.
"Love you too, Seaweed Brain." He grinned and winked at her before walking into the water. The moment that he was in the water he already felt stronger and as if he could take on the whole world.
"Okay remember what I said, buddy?" Percy asked his son while he put Damon on the surfboard and joined him behind him so that he could hold Damon firmly.
Damon only nodded though in response, his curls already wet and giggling.
"Okay, just hold on to me." He repeated once again and then began moving them, paddling towards a small wave.
Damon let out an excited squeal and Percy couldn't help but laugh.
He saw Annabeth looking at them instead of her book, so he grabbed Damon and held him above the water to mess with her a bit. To which she only waved him off and shouted something unhearable, though she didn't seem mad.
He put Damon back before him and wrapped one arm around him tightly, while the other one was paddling them and just lying in the water. They only drifted over some waves - which was in Damon's opinion the most exciting thing to do - since he wasn't really planning to really surf on huge waves and only some small ones, since he wasn't that good at surfing because he hadn't done it that much in years. And getting up in time with Damon in time with a huge wave and not giving Annabeth a heart attack was really hard.
Though the small ones went great. He paddled really fastly, though he let most work be done by his powers and jumped up with Damon, letting him stand in front of him as he used one hand to hold him and one to keep his balance.
Eventually they sat down again and Percy showed his son some figures that he made in the water and created stories about them, like a fish that was lost or a man that was trying not to melt.
And when out of nowhere a dolphin shot up out of the water he didn't know who was more shocked. The dolphin very rapidly explained something, but he could only understand the words: Trapped. Help. Come now.
He thought about it for a moment, but knew that he couldn't refuse the dolphin his help, so he called Annabeth's name, waved, pointed down and hoped that she got the message. At least she was looking at them so that she saw them leave. He didn't want her to casually look up and suddenly see no one there. He knew she hated that.
"Do you want to go on an adventure Damon?" He asked and when he nodded furiously, he dropped in the water himself first and then got Damon, waving to Annabeth one last time and then going fully underwater and creating an air bubble around Damon.
They followed the dolphin to where another dolphin was trapped inside of a net, so he swam over to the dolphin, leaving Damon alone but telling him to stay where he was, and grabbing Riptide to free the dolphin. After a lot of peeling and cutting the net was off and Percy took it with him.
The dolphins thanked him and he tried to remind them to watch out for the nets, but they already swam away.
He turned his attention back to Damon, who hadn't moved an inch. He was just a sweet boy, Percy's heart swell up with pride and love for his son. They swam further, well, Percy swam and dragged Damon with him, but not any deeper to not get too much pressure on Damon's ears.
"Hey dad." He said as he could feel his father behind them. He still focused his attention on Damon and only turned around to face his father when he had Damon's hand in his.
At first they only stared at each other, they hadn't spoken in a long time. But then his father spoke up.
"He has grown a lot."
"Yeah." He answered dryly. These things were always kind of awkward with his dad, they loved each other, sure, but he didn't know what to talk with him about. And their relationship had only gotten more difficult when he had made clear that he didn't approve of Annabeth when they had just started dating. Though now he had accepted it kind of and they didn't talk about that aspect of his life when they talked.
"How is Annabeth?"
"Good. Busy now she has started working again." Annabeth had wanted to take a short break when Damon was born. But now when he turned two she went back to work.
"Tell her I said hi."
"I will."
"Daddy, who is this?" Damon asked softly as he grabbed Percy's hand only tighter.
"This is your grandfather." Percy explained kindly, "You have seen him a couple of times." Even though he didn't see his father that often he came by a lot for a god. He was there at Damon's birthdays and at huge things, like Percy's own graduation.
"Hi, Damon. How have you been?" Poseidon asked kindly.
Damon only nodded as a response which made Percy chuckle and answer for him, "He's doing fine."
"Good. Gods, he is so small. I remember when you were so small."
Percy raised his eyebrows in confusion, "You didn't ever see me when I was two."
"Of course I did. You're my son, Percy. I wasn't just going to ignore you."
"What about the time when you told me that I was a mistake?" Percy almost argued back, but swallowed his words as he didn't want to cause a fight.
His dad raised an eyebrow at him and Percy really hoped gods couldn't read minds, but eventually he continued.
"I just looked at you and your mom from a safe distance so that you wouldn't notice. Though I visited you once when you were just born."
"Oh." Was the only thing that he could stutter out at this sudden confession.
"Thank you for doing that. I really appreciate it." He said later as he had recovered from his shock.
"Of course, I wasn't going to miss out on my only mortal son growing up."
Percy smiled at that, never happier that he had Poseidon as a dad as he knew he could have it a lot worse.
Even though they didn't always see eye to eye, his dad truly loved him which made him feel better about the fact that his dad hadn't been present in most of his life.
"Well I should go. I still need to do a lot and Annabeth is probably waiting for you two." Poseidon said a bit awkwardly.
He nodded, but suddenly he didn't want his dad to go. He wanted to keep talking to him and maybe just get some extra attention from him, which sounded stupid since he was 29 and had a child of his own.
"Dad, would you like to have dinner at our place sometime? I'm sure Annabeth would love to see you again. And I do too."
A smile broke out on his father's face and he went forward to hug Percy closely.
"I would love to, Percy. Bye Damon. See you two later!" He said as he already began to move away.
"Bye dad." Percy muttered, a smile on his face as well.
As they began to swam back, after making some small talk with some fish who asked where the beautiful and hot girl was, which made him raise his eyebrows but also smile happily at the thought of Annabeth, they ran into a sea turtle who had gotten caught between the plastic and was stuck in some.
So they also helped him and gathered the plastic, which he put in a plastic bag he had found. As they swam back Damon pointed to all kinds of things and asked questions about it and Percy tried his best to answer him.
When they resurfaced he put Damon on the surfboard once again and set down behind him, the plastic bag in one hand. They drifted back slowly, drying up in the sun, until they had to walk. When they were on the sand again Damon immediately wanted to leave, but Percy held onto his little hand a little longer because he was checking for monsters, which was stupid since Annabeth was also here and would've noticed, and maybe because he didn't want this moment between them to end. Annabeth was Damon's favorite, for which he couldn't blame him - she was his favorite by far - and he knew Damon loved him as well, but it was nice to have some time with him and their own little adventure.
But as Paul always says, everything ends, as did this moment when eventually he let go of Damon as Annabeth started walking towards them.
"Mommy!" Damon happily exclaimed as he ran to Annabeth. Percy picked the surfboard up and laid it down next to where Annabeth had been sitting before returning back to them.
He walked up to them and heard Damon talk almost animatedly and fast as possible for a two year old about what they had done. Annabeth was listening along with him and began to bounce Damon a bit and tickling him softly as she noticed Percy. "Look who that is! Who is it Damon?" Annabeth asked while hugging Damon really close to her.
"Daddy!" He exclaimed and put his hands out for him. Percy smiled and hugged the both of them, kissing the top of Annabeth's head in the middle of the hug.
They pulled away and they then noticed that Damon had fallen asleep. So they decided to just go home.
As Percy grabbed their stuff and slung the bag over his shoulder and kept the surfboard under his arm, he wrapped his other arm around Annabeth and Damon as they walked home.
A/N
Hi, another short chapter again. Some fluff this time, also nice for once. I was actually planning to post this one for Percy's birthday, but I wanted to do it now instead. I'm writing a longer one shot, so this one is just in between and I'm writing one for Percy's birthday. Hope you liked it and have a nice day or night!
