It's Okay You Can Rest Now
"You've got to be kidding me!" Percy groaned, rolling out of bed, already seeing Annabeth getting dressed. They had been woken up from the alarm bell and Annabeth had been the first to jump out of bed.
"Come on, we've got to hurry! Just get dressed, I'm already outside. See you out there, Seaweed Brain."
But before she could hurry outside he pulled her into a hug, already having a bad hunch. He kissed her sweetly, never wanting to let her go. But the moment ended too soon as they had to go.
Their home, Camp Half-Blood, was being attacked after all. He pulled a shirt over his head and put some pants other than his pj's on and followed her, Riptide already drawn.
They ran into Chiron and asked him what exactly was going on.
"A roar up from Gaia's last followers. This should be the last one." He explained to them and then ran off to go and help some younger campers. After the war some followers of Gaia kept attacking them, not wanting to accept that Gaia was gone.
"Okay, a strategy." Annabeth mumbled, turning to him as they began running over the hill and into the battle.
"It's better if we split up I think." She looked at his frown. Normally Annabeth wanted them to stay together in battle, since they could really play into each other and knew exactly what the other would do. But they were both one of the stronger fighters and they could better help the others. And meet up at one point.
That was what she explained to him and she pointed at a point in the middle and they agreed that they would meet up there. She kissed him briefly and then ran off into the monster hurdle.
She sliced through monsters and it went pretty well; according to her calculations they could easily win if they kept going with this.
She saw Clarisse flashing by, attacking some monster who was about to attack the younger campers. Annabeth ran up to him to give them some instructions and advice on how they could survive.
There were more campers on Percy's side and they were defeating them faster. Sometimes she could hear Percy yell something at someone and couldn't help but sigh in relief that he was still alive.
Deep inside she knew that Percy was hard to kill and wouldn't die that fast. But it still got her chills if she thought too long about what could happen.
"Don't have time for this." She muttered and focused on some other monster. She sliced through it and focused on another one, not wanting to think too much anymore. Which was a rare thing to say for a daughter of Athena. She just wanted to end this fight, which had been going for far too long and they had lost far too many campers, meet Percy in the middle and hopefully get some rest in the afternoon.
So she fought and fought. She got stabbed in the arm, but that didn't really matter.
They were almost done when she saw Percy running up to her. She faced him, happy that he was there. And alive. His side of campers was done with the monsters, only two or three left.
"Annabeth watch out!" Percy screamed, pushing her aside. Annabeth couldn't register what was going on, Percy had pushed her on the ground, taking her place. And then she looked aside and then there was blood. Everywhere. Coming out of- Percy. There- there must have been a monster that she hadn't seen.
"Percy!" She roared out, tears already welling up in her eyes. He was laying on the ground, clutching his stomach.
She removed her hands and pulled his shirt up. He groaned in pain. Annabeth couldn't locate the wound since there was too much blood.
"Beth, just leave it. It's not- it's not going to make a difference." He croaked out. She couldn't believe her ears.
"What no! We can- I can- we-." She jumped up, searching for something, though she didn't know what.
"Beth, you can't. You can't do and fix everything. Sometimes you have to ignore your fatal flaw."
"Must you say!" She screamed at him. "If you didn't push me aside you wouldn't be hurting."
"Annabeth-" He stopped for a minute, catching his breath. "It's poisoned I think and I'm losing too much blood. I don't want to spend my last moments trying to keep me alive. Just let me die in peace please."
Annabeth pushed the tears back and nodded sitting down next to him. The battle was as good as finished and the campers around them let them be.
She held his hand and squeezed it lightly. Luckily he squeezed it back.
"Hi." He mumbled weakly.
"Hi." She tried not to cry for him, not wanting his last memory of her to be her crying.
"Wise Girl, you can cry, it's okay. You don't have to be strong for me."
Something about him using his nickname for her since they were 12 and saying that it was okay opened the gates and the tears streamed down her face. She was going to lose the love of her life. He was going to die.
"Annabeth, can you please tell my mom that I'm sorry. I didn't mean to you know- die." Annabeth nodded, she had stopped crying, only a few tears falling down once in a while.
"And Beth, don't dwell on me, okay? I'm serious. You need to move on eventually. We're only 17, you can't stay alone forever. Just remember me, please. Even if we don't see each other in a long time."
She only nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat away.
"I'm really going to die." He mumbled, gripping her hand stronger, though it wasn't much. He was losing too much blood too fast. He really was right, there was nothing they could do.
"I love you too much. So it's okay if you're happy with someone else, that's how much I love you." He told her, looking more determined than ever.
"I love you too." She told him, pecking him on the lips. "It's just not fair."
"No. It's not, but we're Greeks right?" He smirked slightly, though it turned into a grimace at the pain.
"Can we do anything? Sorry I only heard now." Will's voice spoke from behind them.
Annabeth turned her head to look Will in the eyes. He looked really panicked and had a medical back, but no- they couldn't do anything it was too late.
"No, he's losing too much. Just can you give us some privacy please? Just give him some peace."
Will nodded and left. The both of them fell in a short silence. She was thinking about what to say to him, what were going to be her last words. But her thoughts were interrupted when Percy muttered, "I'm really going to die. Oh Gods. I'm not ready- I-." He began freaking out and now it was Annabeth's turn to stay calm and reassure him. It was probably only really dwelling on him.
"I- I want to go to college. To marry you, grow old with you- and that's not- not going to happen."
"Hey, hey, it's okay. Percy, relax. It's all going to be okay. I'm going to be okay. It's- it's okay." It was so not okay. But this wasn't about her. This was about Percy leaving this world in peace.
"It's okay, you can rest now. You can finally rest. And you've deserved it. You're a true hero, Seaweed Brain and the love of my life. But I'll move on, for you. And I'll make sure your mom is okay."
He seemed to relax at that. And nodded, clasping her hand again.
"Can you please stay with me until I fall asleep? Lay next to me?"
"Of course." She replied.
Before lying down next to him, kissing him one last time. Trying to drown all the memories in. The way his lips feel, his hair, his arms around her, the way he looked at her when she eventually had to pull back.
She laid next to him and he wrapped one arm around her, the other still holding her hand tightly.
She looked in his eyes; grey meeting green once again. For the last time.
"I'm going to close my eyes now. So you don't have to later." He told her. As sweet as ever, always thinking about her.
She kissed him again, wanting to make it more comfortable for him.
And he didn't open his eyes like she secretly expected to happen. But no, he didn't because this was a Greek tragedy. They're Greeks.
She pulled away softly, tears streaming down. But he was still alive.
She knew how he still held her hand and she could feel him taking breaths and his heart beating faintly. She didn't look at him though, she just looked at the sky. A beautiful August day.
Until his breath hitched and hers in return. She closed her eyes too, tears streaming down as his hand fell limp in hers.
