Wedding (P2)
READ THE BOLD
Okay, so I edited the first part of this so go back and read that or you won't understand this one shot.
It's also the same one shot posted on my Life Goes On one shot book (The Big Day) so I'd you've read that one, you'll understand.
Anyway, it's just a one shot on Fredericks view on the wedding because I would want to hear his side of the story if this wasn't my book.
(I also didn't read through and edit so I apologize for any mistakes)
Enjoy!
Frederick took a deep breath and entered Camp half-Blood, giving Chiron a tight lipped smile before walking down the hill, his family trailing behind him. Why were they there? Well, his twenty year-old daughter, Annabeth, was getting married. In his opinion, she was far too young but if she would be happy, he'd allow it.
A couple months ago, Annabeth had called him on her phone she rarely used so he knew it was important. Thinking she was going to be heartbroken because Percy broke up with her, he picked up the phone but was surprised. They didn't break up, they got engaged. Frederick wasn't very happy. He gave Annabeth a whole lecture and wouldn't let her speak. He regrets that now but he won't take back his opinion that they're too young. Besides, he barely even knows the guy she's getting married to. He's met him once before they were dating then maybe another time after they started dating.
He was a bit surprised when she offered for him to walk her down the aisle. He'd expected that he'd just be sitting in the front row, watching his daughter be walked down by Chiron or even Percy's step-father, Paul Blofis. Anyone but him. She'd even told him that a few years ago after a large fight, that he wouldn't walk her down the aisle. But here he was, dressed up and ready to give his daughter away.
It was a bit heartbreaking actually. Frederick didn't not want her to get married or finally get her happy ending. He just didn't think she was ready. Annabeth wasn't even out of college yet and wouldn't be for another couple years. Was she ready for this big of a commitment? She'd always struggled with keeping things permanent. Why did he doubt his daughter so much? She'd accomplished more in a few years than he ever could in a lifetime and he was doubting her ability to be in a marriage? What a father he was.
The one thing he worried the most about was: who really is Percy? Like he mentioned, Frederick only had met him a couple times. Of course, the boy was very respectful both times and he seemed nervous while talking to him. But, how did he treat Annabeth away from others? When they were alone with no eyes watching them? Again, Frederick was doubting his daughter's choice in men. He had to stop doing that. If Percy was harming Annabeth, surely Athena would have blasted him by now.
Frederick took a deep breath as he and his wife, Helen, along with their twin boys, Bobby and Matthew, walked down between the two sections of chair; one for Annabeth's family and the other for Percy's. He noticed, as he walked, that teenagers and young adults around him whispered among themselves as they stared at him. Some even gave judgemental looks. Most were blonde or brown haired with striking grey eyes. Children of Athena. Well, Annabeth definitely told them about her home life before she ran away.
Making sure his wife and children were in the right seats, Fzrederick said goodbye then headed back to behind the chairs where a dark blue curtain was being set up. It was probably where everyone was going to stand before walking out since there were no doors to hide the bride from the groom's eyes.
Behind the curtain, Frederick stood off to the side from everyone else. There were about seven teenagers/young adults standing back there, all talking excitedly with each other. The girls wore light blue dresses while the boys wore suites. But then someone else caught his eyes.
She came walking into sight with a bright aura around her. She seemed to be glowing from the happiness radiating off her. She wore a long Greek theme wedding dress, her hair was perfectly curled and styled in a half up, half down fashion, and her makeup was not too much and not too little. Just perfect.
"Annabeth!" He started walking toward his daughter, freezing a few feet in front of her. "Wow, you look beautiful, honey."
"Thanks," She replied and he noticed she held onto her bouquet of blue roses tighter, her knuckles turning white. "The wedding is about to start."
"Right." Frederick cleared his throat awkwardly and stood beside her. "You know, Annabeth, I'm not very fond of the idea of you being married so young but if it makes you happy then I'm happy."
"Thanks," Annabeth repeated.
He knew it really wasn't his decision if she got married or not. He knew, deep down, that even if he had said no or forbidden her from getting married, she still would have. Much to his disappointment, Annabeth didn't care about anything he had to say about her life. She'd always reply with the same thing: You didn't want anything to do with me the first half, why would I listen to you know? It sent a pain to his heart every time.
The music started and he held his arm out so she could loops hers through it. Frederick bit his lips as the bridesmaids and groomsmen began walking down the aisle, and he realized that this was Annabeth's last minutes as a Chase. She would be a Jackson soon. It felt like only a second till the blue curtain opened up and they both came face to face with crowds of gods, demigods, and mortals (family).
"I'm ready," She told him confidently, her eyes glued to something down the aisle.
Frederick nodded then began to walk her down the aisle, trying to ignore all the looks that were thrown his way from the demigod section. Seriously, what did Annabeth tell them throughout all her years of being there? Did she tell them everything?
Much faster than he would have liked, him and Annabeth had made it to the altar. It was time to give her away. He met Percy's watery eyes and the young boys stuck out his hand for Annabeth. Frederick took a deep breath and placed hers in his, watching sadly as she was pulled up onto the altar.
Taking a deep breath, Frederick said, "Take care of her, Percy."
"I will." Percy gave him a firm nod before giving his attention to Annabeth.
Frederick nodded and slowly stepped away from the altar, going to sit beside his wife who gave him a gentle pat on the back, having some understanding of what he was going through. He straightened when Hera, the goddess of marriage, cleared her throat and started to speak.
"We are gathered here today to join the lives of Perseus Jackson and Annabeth Chase..."
Frederick zoned out at that part. His only daughter, his little girl, was getting married today. After tonight, she'd be living the life of a married woman. She'd be calling herself Annabeth Jackson instead of Chase. She'd be going back to college married. He took a deep breath because, gods, he needed one. It felt like just two days ago he was finding out she was dating someone named Percy Jackson. He had been so worried then, thinking that she was going to have her heart broken but no, two years later he gets a call saying they're engaged.
It dawned on him again that she was actually getting married. He took another deep breath. It was a hard pill to swallow. He remembered, twenty years ago, when he saw a cradle on his doorstep with a golden haired baby inside, wrapped in white cloth, crying for someone to hold her. He had wanted to call the police and was even in the middle of calling their number when he saw a note tucked into the cradle. He's pretty sure he almost passed out when reading it because he didn't remember having... you know with a goddess. Then he read on and found out how it worked.
He had panicked. He didn't have a crib, clothes, bottles, formula, nothing. There was nothing he had that a baby needed to stay alive. So, he had called his sister, Natalie, who had also had a baby a few months back, to come babysit Annabeth (the name Athena had given her). Natalie did it without questioning anything, but for some odd reason the facial expression on her face when she saw the cradle and the cloth made it seem like she knew how it happened. But, he didn't ask and went to buy everything.
It felt like just yesterday Frederick was laughing whenever little Annabeth made a terrible joke or smiling when she climbed into his lap when they watched a movie together. He missed, really missed, when it was just the two of them in Virginia. But then he met Helen and everything changed, and not for the better. He remembered when she was terrible to Annabeth and he did nothing to stop it. She had run away and what had he done? Absolutely nothing. Literally, he doesn't even remember sending out a missing person report. He just... let her go.
Their relationship hadn't been the same after that. They couldn't get through one visit without one of them starting a fight which resulted in her packing her stuff and leaving. He knew he had left a wound on his daughter that would never fully heal. And he regrets it everyday of his life.
And watching her and Percy up there, lost in each other's eyes, he thought, maybe it wasn't her age that bothered him. Maybe he didn't even care that she was getting married at twenty to a boy he barely knew. Maybe he just... didn't want to let her go just yet.
Frederick was snapped out of his thoughts when Hera announced it was time for the vows. He wanted to hear this, find out how strong their relationship really was. He stiffened when Percy cleared his throat but relaxed when Helen squeezed his hand.
"You must mean a lot to me because I memorized my vows," Percy started. "So, here it goes, Annabeth, I've known you for eight years and dated you for four of them. The best four years of my life. But it feels like I've known you for my whole life."
Annabeth nodded in agreement.
"The first time I met you, when I saw you, I thought you looked like a princess," He continued and Frederick raised an eyebrow at that statement. "And right now, you really do look like a princess. Since that moment, I knew we were bound to be something. I didn't know if that meant we were going to be enemies, friends or lovers."
Frederick could faintly hear Annabeth mutter something about seaweed.
Percy grinned. "Turns out it was the last one and I've never been more grateful in my whole life. We started dating and my whole life changed for the better. "I was happier and when I was... harming myself-"
Frederick widened his eyes.
"-a couple months after the battle, you told me I mattered and that's when I realized, Annabeth Chase was- is," He corrected, "my lifeline. And I just want to thank you. For staying with me, sticking by my side even though I'm sure it wasn't easy at times. During the times when I was angry, sad, or happy, you were always there," Percy said honestly. "Thank you."
Annabeth whispered, "Anytime."
"ANd as I stand here right now, I know that I am the luckiest man alive. I get to spend the rest of my life with Annabeth Chase, soon-to-be-Jackson. I get to be married to this beautiful, strong, kind woman right here, raise a family with her and grow old." Percy blinked and a tear rolled down his cheek.
Frederick watched Annabeth wipe it away with her thumb.
"I love you, Wise Girl," Percy told her. "I love you so much and I'll never hurt you, I'll never leave you."
Frederick had to smile at that.
"Wow, Percy," Annabeth said, wiping at her own eyes, "Let's see if I can compete with that." She laughed. "To be honest, I hated you. But I only hated you because our parents hated each other. I thought that meant we had to hate each other."
Percy rolled his eyes playfully and Frederick chuckled quietly.
"I was so busy trying to make my mother proud that I forgot about your feelings. You made me realize that no matter our parents' history, we didn't have to live in their footsteps," Annabeth said. "We can lead our own life the way we want."
"That's right," Percy said.
Annabeth smiled. "I became your friend and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Being your friend was the craziest point in my life for a while. I experienced a life of an average teenage girl, happiness, having crushes, and jealousy."
Percy laughed and so did Frederick, along with half the guests.
"When Rachel Elizabeth Dare came along, I couldn't describe the jealousy I was feeling. I thought I was going to lose you. You seemed to have fallen for her and I wanted to scream at Aphrodite for being so unfair," Annabeth said.
Frederick saw Percy caress her knuckles with his thumbs.
"But, no. You came to your senses when you turned sixteen. I kissed you and we started dating. Now, that is the best decision I've ever made." Annabeth laughed. "It was the best four months of my life but then you disappeared."
They both gave Hera a side glance which made Frederick smile.
Annabeth took a deep breath, looking back to Percy. "I was broken. I didn't know what I was feeling. I think it was a heartbreak. Everyone I've ever loved left me and then you left too. The worst part? I blamed you. I blamed you for your own disappearance, something you couldn't control." Annabeth looked into his eyes. "I'm sorry."
Percy smiled and whispered something Frederick couldn't make out.
Clearing her throat, Annabeth said, "Then you fell into Tartarus for me and that's when I really realized that I loved you. That I do love you. More than anything. And I'm the luckiest girl alive because I get to spend the rest of my life with a Seaweed Brain like you."
Most of the guests laughed while Percy wiped Annabeth's tears away.
Hera spoke, "Do you, Perseus Jackson, take Annabeth Chase, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health until death due you apart, to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
Frederick smiled softly when Bobby and Matthew came to the altar, holding a blue pillow where the rings were sitting.
"I do." Percy smiled as Annabeth slipped the ring on his finger.
"Do you, Annabeth Chase, take Perseus Jackson, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health until death due you apart, to be your lawfully wedded husband?" Hera asked.
"I do."
Frederick swallowed thickly as Percy slipped the ring on her finger.
"Then by the power vested in be because I am the goddess of marriage, I now pronounce you husband and wife," Hera declared. "Perseus, you may now kiss your bride."
Percy wrapped his arms around Annabeth's waist, pulling her close, and pressing his lips to hers. Annabeth responded by wrapping her arms around his neck, her hands coming up to run through his hair.
Most of the guests stood and started to clap, some even cheering. And by most of the guests, Frederick meant the demigods. Someone cleared their throat behind him and Frederick turned around to find Athena looking up at Percy and Annabeth with an unreadable expression. Realizing it wasn't directed at him, Frederick turned back around and started to clap, a little uneasy because of Athena. Did she not like Percy? Is there something about him that he should be worried about?
He shook out of his thoughts when he realized Helen was practically pulling him over to the pavilion where everyone else was already crowded around. Frederick turned to his wife and said, "What do you think about Percy?"
She gave him an odd look. "I think he's fine, why?"
"I don't know." He shrugged, his eyes glued to Percy and Annabeth who were cutting the first piece out of their large cake. The inside was blue causing Percy to twirl Annabeth around and kiss her. Apparently he liked blue. "I've just got an uneasy feeling. Athena doesn't like him so I feel like there's something i should be worried about."
Helen smiled at one of the campers in thanks as they handed her two plates with a slice of cake on both of them before replying, "Frederick, don't worry about it. They've been dating for four years. Do you really think if something was bad about him that Annabeth would still be with him and looking that happy?" She gestured to where Percy and Annabeth were sitting, both laughing so hard they looked like they were going to burst.
"Well, no." Frederick's shoulders slumped as he sat down, his eyes still on Percy and Annabeth instead of paying attention to where Bobby and Matthew were. "I just- I don't know."
"Just don't worry too much." She squeezed his shoulder affectionately. "I think what you're feeling is normal. She's your only daughter and she just got married to someone you barely know."
"That's the thing. I don't know him." Frederick took a bite out of the cake and was surprised at how good it tasted. " What if he's like an axe murderer or something?"
Helen stared at him incredulously. "Now you're just being stupid. Be happy for her, frederick. It's her big night and she doesn't need her father worrying about everything she does."
"What if he distracts her from her studies? She's still in college."
"This is Annabeth we're talking about," Helen said in a tone that screamed: duh.
Frederick took a deep breath. "You're right. I-"
He was interrupted by... a half goat, half man? "I would like to say a thing or two for the newly weds."
The pavilion grew silent.
"When we were younger, I never thought you two would be where you are today. If I'm, being totally honest, I thought Percy wasn't going to still be alive. But no, these two stared death straight in the eyes and told him no." Grover shook his head. "And now you two are going to have a wonderful life together and I'm so glad you guys are my best friends."
People clapped, Percy and Annabeth smiled, and the half goat, half man sat back down.
Frederick started up again, "As I was saying-"
He was interrupted yet again by a girl he knew as Thalia, Annabeth's best friend.
"I would like to say a couple things too. First of all, ew. This is all kind of gross. My cousin and best friend, who's like my sister are married and who knows what they're going to do after tonight." She made a face full of disgust. "But anyways, I wish you a happy marriage." She sat back down.
Frederick laughed when he noticed that Annabeth stuck her tongue out.
"Anyways-" He was interrupted again.
"Oh my gods." The girl he saw with Annabeth early stood in the middle, wiping tears out of her eyes. "I'm so happy for the two of you. I remember the day I met you, Annabeth, and since then you've been the bestest friend anyone could ever ask for. You'll make an amazing wife and hopefully we'll get some little Jacksons running around soon."
Frederick choked on his spit while Percy and Annabeth blushed.
"Anyway," Piper continued, "I think it's time for Percy and Annabeth to have their first dance as husband and wife." She gave a group of kids a look and they started playing a soft tune. She then sat down in her chair, gesturing for them to go onto the dance floor. Well, the dance floor was really the center of the pavilion where all the tables were pushed out of the way.
Frederick watched as Percy stood, offered his hand to Annabeth, and said something. She laughed and grabbed his hand, letting him pull her to the center before wrapping her arms around his neck while his went around her waist.
"What were you saying, Fred?" Helen asked him, taking her eyes off the newleds.
"I don't really know," Frederick said and watched as a woman maybe a few years younger than him walked up to Percy and Annabeth (other people were starting to join them on the dance floor) and tapped his shoulder. Annabeth smiled and separated herself from Percy, walking over to the table where all the drinks were, engaging herself in a conversation with Thalia.
"Well, I know something's off because you haven't stopped talking about these weddings since last night," Helen told him. "Do you still not think she's making the right choice?"
"She's just so young," Frederick sighed. "And he's the only person she's dated and it's only been four years. What if one of them meets someone else and realizes maybe they really aren't meant to be with each other forever? She'll be heartbroken."
Helen sighed. "Do you want to know what I think?" He nodded. "I think that you need to trust her. Trust her decisions. Trust her judgement. She's twenty and no matter how much you talk to her, she's not going to listen. So relax and just be happy that she's happy."
"But-"
"No buts," She said.
He glanced back over at Annabeth to find her talking to the same girl who brought her out to the beach. Pushing away from the table, Frederick stood and said, "I'm going to go talk to her." He ignored the look Helen threw at him and walked over to Annabeth, tapping her shoulder.
She turned around and he smiled, holding out his hand for her. She raised an eyebrow like she didn't know what he was implying. "Am I not allowed to dance with my daughter?"
Annabeth hesitated, setting the bottle of water down on the table, and grabbed his hand. "Yeah, sure." She let him pull her to the dance floor.
"So, how's it feel to be married?" He asked as they started to sway to the music, deciding to start the conversation lightly. "Any doubts?"
"No, no doubts, Dad." She was trying really hard not to roll her eyes, he could tell. "I know you think twenty is too young to be married but if you've been through what Percy and I have, you'd understand." Annabeth gritted her teeth. "And we've been dating for four years."
Frederick nodded with pursed lips. "For two years I didn't even know you had a boyfriend."
"I already apologized for that," She replied.
"You're also still in college," He pointed out.
Annabeth sighed. "Why can't you just be happy for me? Is that so hard? I'm your only daughter who just got married and instead of being happy, you're making me feel bad about marrying the boy I love?"
"I am happy for you," Frederick tried to reason. "I just don't want you to be heartbroken in the future. Study shows that people who get married young are more likely to fall apart."
"Yeah, like seventeen year-olds. Not twenty years olds. PLus, Percy and I won't get a divorce, we've been dating for four years, like I said," Annabeth replied and let go of his hand, pushing herself away. "Don't ruin my big night."
Frederick nodded and let her go. He watched her walk away to find Percy and he headed to the back, standing beside the same woman who was dancing with Percy moments before. He gave an awkward smile when she looked over at him.
"You're Annabeth's dad, right?" The woman asked kindly. He nodded and she stuck out her hand. "I'm Percy's mom, Sally Blofis."
He shook her hand. "Frederick Chase."
"It's nice to meet you," She said and retracted her hand. "It's nice to see them finally tie the knot. I've been waiting for this day since they came home to tell me they started dating."
"Oh," Frederick said and looked over at Annabeth who was laughing at Percy who was moving their arms back and forth, telling her something. "I'm a bit worried actually. What if they don't work out like everyone says they will?"
Sally snorted. "You obviously don't know their relationship very well. Those two are more in love than I've seen anyone before. I wouldn't worry about that, Frederick. Sure, they'll get into fights, big and small, but they'll come around in the end. Not even a god could tear them apart."
"But, Athena doesn't like them together. Aren't you a little worried about that?" Frederick asked. "She is a goddess afterall."
"She didn't like Percy the moment he stepped into Camp. She doesn't like him because he's a son of Poseidon but she came around eventually and approved their relationship," Sally told him, smiling when she saw Percy and Annabeth kiss. "I wouldn't worry about them. Just be happy for her."
"You're happy for Percy I assume?" Frederick asked.
"Happy is an understatement. I'm overjoyed," Sally said with a big smile on her face. "He really did a good job picking the right girl. They may be almost complete opposites but they compliment each other so well. Annabeth was also always there when he needed her, vise versa. I couldn't ask for anyone better for my son."
Frederick smiled. "I don't know why I feel like this all of sudden even though she doesn't listen to me."
"You're her dad, it's normal." Sally smiled warmly. "Like I said, don't worry and be happy." Then she walked over to a man about his age with sandy blonde hair. He was holding a girl who looked to be around three years old. Must have been her husband and daughter.
Frederick glanced back over at Percy and Annabeth to find them wrapped in each other's arms again, Annabeth's head on his shoulder and his resting on hers. He caught a small detail, Percy's arms were around her waist tightly and his thumb was gently brushing against her back which caused Annabeth to smile and bury her face in his shoulder.
Okay, maybe this Percy guy wasn't so bad afterall.
