We Meet Again part 2
It was Saturday afternoon and Matt was ready to go home. The cafe wasn't busy like it usually was but he was still exhausted. Guess that's what you get for being a high school drop out and your parents kick you out once you turn eighteen.
That's right, during Junior Year, Matt Sloan dropped out of high school because he thought he wasn't going to need it. Only if he knew what the consequences were going to be. His girlfriend broke up with him after she found out. Then when he turned eighteen, his parents kicked him out.
Nobody would hire him. The only place was a cafe in downtown Manhattan. It wasn't unpopular and it wasn't ratty. It was actually very nice, fancy even. It paid well, he was able to get himself an apartment after working for a month.
But for some reason, this Saturday, October 23, it was almost empty. Well, it was about to close in just two hours but it was empty almost all day. Matt wasn't complaining. Only three employees worked at a time, one at the drive thru, one at the cash register, and one making the drinks.
Matt worked at the cash register all day. For twelve hours he ordered people's drinks and accepted their payments. When he got home every night the only energy he had was to make himself something to eat then to get into his bed. Then he was out like a light.
At 6:00 P.M. he thought there would be no customers and he'd be able to go once the few people in the cafe went home. But no. The door had to open and the stupid bell had to ring. Matt sighed and got into position behind the cash register.
The people who walked in were a boy and a girl. The girl had blonde hair and unusual grey eyes. She wore leggings and a sweatshirt. She looked to be pregnant, maybe five months. The boy had black hair and green eyes. He wore a white button up shirt and black dress pants like he just got off of work. Thankfully he did not look pregnant.
"What can I get for you?" Matt asked.
The girl was looking up at the menu but the boy knew exactly what he wanted. "I would like an iced caramel frappuccino, thank you. Annabeth?"
Annabeth looked down from the menu and at Matt. "I'll just have a hot chocolate, thank you."
He wouldn't lie, she was very beautiful but not his type. Besides, she was pregnant with this guy's child, he assumed. He respected that she was taken. "Okay, $13.78"
The man pulled out his wallet and slipped out a credit card, handing it to Matt. That's when he noticed the wedding ring. Ah, they were married. Matt handed the credit card back after using it. "What name should I put it under."
"Percy," The boy, Percy, answered.
Matt nodded and wrote it down on the receipt. "Okay, you can go find a seat and when your drinks are ready, I'll call your name."
"Alright thank you."
Matt watched the couple as they picked a booth by the window. They looked more in love than half the couples Matt sees come into the cafe everyday. Just the way they look at each other said everything.
He gave the orders to his coworker in the back.
A little over five minutes, the drinks were handed to Matt. "Percy, one Iced Caramel Frape and one hot chocolate!"
Matt watched as Percy squeezed Annabeth's hand before standing up and walking over to Matt. He grabbed the drinks and was about to leave when Matt spoke up. "What's your last name? You look familiar."
"Jackson." Percy looked at his name tag. "Matt Sloan."
"Percy Jackson," Matt said. That's why the hair and eyes looked so familiar. This was the kid who he bullied. He thought that kid was not going to make it anywhere in life but here he was married and a kid on the way which most likely meant a stable job.
"Uh, yeah," Percy said awkwardly.
Matt glanced back at Annabeth. "And she's the girl who punched me in the nose."
Percy chuckled. "Yup."
"Look, man, I'm sorry. About everything, bullying you and Tyson. It was immature, stupid, and uncalled for. I really wasn't thinking. I thought that you weren't going to make it anywhere in life but it turns out it was the opposite," Matt said.
"It's alright." Percy shrugged. "Tyson doesn't even remember half of it."
"You're still friends with him? Nice." Matt smiled.
Percy nodded. "I never told anyone but he's my half-brother. So yeah, I still see him all the time."
"Ah, so that's why you were so defensive," Matt recalled. "Well, anyway, I'm so sorry."
"You were forgiven a long time ago Matt, I had other things to worry about than you making fun of me and Tyson. Literally the least of my worries." Percy laughed quietly to himself. "Anyway, I have to, you know." He held the drink up.
"Oh, yes. Enjoy your drinks and tell your wife that the punch hurt pretty bad," Matt laughed.
"Will do," Percy replied and turned around, walking back to the table.
Matt saw Percy say a few things to Annabeth. She laughed, turned to Matt and waved. He waved back and then grabbed some cleaning supplies and started cleaning off tables.
That day he learned something new about Percy.
Percy Jackson was very forgiving.
