Thinking About Her
It was two in the morning on the Argo II and everyone was fast asleep. Everyone except a certain Son of Poseidon.
Percy laid in bed, wide awake. He didn't want to admit it but he was terrified of closing his eyes. Terrified of going to sleep. Without her warm body pressed up against him or the sound of her rhythmic breathing, it was impossible to sleep without haunting memories filling his head.
Everytime he closed his eyes, images of her falling into the dark abyss alone flashed through his mind. They embedded themselves in his brain, forbidding him from having a good night's sleep. The nightmares haunted him every night.
He wanted so badly to sleep. It used to be one of his favorite things to do but he absolutely despised it now. Percy hated sleeping. It was supposed to be relaxing and help you function better! Sleep wasn't supposed to cause you pain or make you walk around like a zombie the next day.
Percy was so mentally and physically tired. After Tartarus, he couldn't function the same, getting triggered at the littlest things. Percy used to be able to go all day without getting tired but even one sparring match and he already felt like he could use a nap. But of course, he couldn't sleep.
Squeezing his eyes shut, trying to doze off. Percy instantly regretted it though. The sounds of the engines on the Argo II turned into the sharp scream of the girl he loved. Of the girl he couldn't save in his dreams.
His eyes snapped open. Percy felt like he had swallowed a dozen knives. He hadn't even fallen asleep and the memories already filled his mind.
It was no use. Sleeping was simply not possible for him anymore. Percy all but ripped the blankets off him and set his bare feet against the warm and sticky floor.
Before he left his cabin, Percy threw on a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt, hence he was only trying to sleep in his boxers. (It was super hot on the floating ship).
Opening the door, Percy sneakily slipped out of his room and walked down the corridor. He passed his girlfriend's room and paused for a second, gazing at her door. Her name was carved into it in Greek.
Shaking his head, Percy continued towards the stairs. He wouldn't bother her incase she was sleeping. At least one of them would be well rested for whatever they faced the next day.
He trudged up the stairs and made it to the deck. Leaning against the railing, Percy forced his eyes to look up at the dark blue sky. He focused on one of the many constellations: Zoe Nightshade. The constellation brought a stab to his heart and he looked away.
Percy suddenly felt sick and he leaned over the railing as he threw up, holding his stomach as he did so as if it would help the pain. After his stomach was emptied, he rested his forehead against the cool metal railing.
"Percy?" His head snapped to the direction of the voice. "I thought I heard someone come up here."
"Hey," Percy sighed. It was just Leo, not a monster. "Sorry if I woke you. I couldn't sleep."
Leo frowned. "Go see her."
"What?"
"Annabeth," Leo explained. "Go to her. You need her right now."
Percy pursed his lips. "But she might be sleeping."
"Look, dude, I know it's hard, okay? I get it. But this is Annabeth we're talking about, the girl who did not give up on you when almost everyone else did. The girl that wouldn't stop looking for you for even a second." Leo gave him a stern look. "She will not care if you go and talk to her right now. Who cares if you wake her up? Annabeth won't care. She loves you and when you love someone, you do anything for them. So, go be with her. Maybe she even needs you right now too."
Percy blinked. Who knew Leo, the jokester, had that in him. "Wow. Thanks, Leo."
Leo grinned. "No problem." Then he walked back down the stairs, probably to his own cabin.
----
Percy was about to knock and stopped himself. She wouldn't care. He set his hand against the cold doorknob and twisted it, pushing the door open. He was surprised to find that the bedside lamp was on and that his girlfriend was sitting up in bed, looking down at a blueprint.
She looked up and smiled brightly, her grey eyes shining when they spotted him. Percy forced a smile back. She was too cute in architect mode; hair up in a messy bun and she was biting on her pencil.
Annabeth collected all her blueprints and rulers, moving them to the end of the bed. "Come here." She patted the space beside her.
Percy shuffled into the room and plopped down next to her, leaning his head on her shoulder. "Hi," He mumbled and slipped his fingers through hers loosely.
"Hey," She whispered back and moved to a lying position. She grabbed his arm and pulled him down next to her, his head resting on her chest and his hand against her stomach. "Couldn't sleep?" Annabeth ran her fingers through his hair.
"No." He shook his head. "I can't even close my eyes for a second without images flashing through my head. Most of them are you and sometimes it's just black and all I can hear is your screams."
Annabeth kissed the top of his head. "I'm here and I'm not going anywhere. We're together and that's all that matters, right?" He nodded against her. "Good. Is that all?"
"I love you."
"I love you too, Percy," Annabeth said. "Do you think you could try to sleep now?"
Percy moved his head so he was looking up at her and she smiled. "Only if I can stay with you." Wrapping his arms around her waist, Percy buried his face into her side and mumbled, "Please?"
Annabeth chuckled. "I wasn't going to kick you out, Seaweed Brain."
She reached out to turn off the light but Percy stopped her. "Can we keep the lights on?" Annabeth nodded even though he couldn't see her and retracted her arm.
They soon fell asleep in the comfort of each other's arms and neither of them had a nightmare. As long as they were together, it would all be okay.
Sorry it was so short but I'm running out of ideas to write about.
