Normal
Being a demigod was dangerous. Demigods didn't have all the freedom like mortals did. They lived an abnormal life, fighting monsters and running errands for the gods. They lived under a protective barrier, the mist, that kept the secrets of their mythology filled world from the mortal world.
But, there were some nights, when those demigods could live like normal people. When no monsters paid them a visit and the gods left them alone. A night where they lived freely, not a care in the world about what they did.
Tonight was one of those nights.
After they ate out for dinner after school on a Friday afternoon, they came home to find the apartment empty. There was a note, written by his mom on the table saying that she wasn't home, along with his step-dad and little sister.
Normal teenagers would have found that as an opportunity to get away with things they couldn't when their parents were around. But they were different. They knew, more than mortals, how valuable life was and that throwing one little party could ruin it.
Instead, they changed into more comfortable clothes (sweatpants/leggings and hoodies, of course) and settled for making cupcakes. Well, they were trying to make cupcakes. They might turn out as blue bricks in the end but it was the fun that mattered.
The girl, Annabeth, had just left the kitchen to go use the bathroom so Percy was in charge of stirring the cupcake batter. He wouldn't lie, he was getting frustrated that the clumps in the batter wouldn't go away.
A few minutes later, she came back into the kitchen. Percy was fortunate enough to turn around at the exact right moment. He watched, with wide eyes, as Annabeth slipped on a puddle of spilled water. It seemed to go in slow motion but soon Annabeth was on the ground.
Thankfully, she wasn't mad. They both started to crack up, not believing that actually happened. They laughed together until there was no air going into their lungs and tears were brought to their unique colored eyes.
Once the laughter died down, Percy helped her up. Still chuckling lightly, Annabeth wiped the tears from her eyes and leaned against the counter. "We should probably clean that up."
Percy agreed and handed her a towel. She bent down and dried up the water, occasionally letting out a laugh. "Did that actually happen?" He asked. At that, Annabeth practically collapsed to the ground in a fit of giggles. "Who are you and what happened to Annabeth?"
"Shut up! That was.. funny!" She wheezed out and stood, shaking herself out of the laughter. "Where does your mom keep the cupcake pan thing?"
"The cupcake pan thing?" Percy lifted his eyebrows and handed it to her.
She shrugged. "Well, I don't know what it's called." She poured the batter into the cupcake indents until the bowl was empty. "What do we do now?"
The cupcakes were no in the oven, waiting to be baked. That was the only plan they had for the night but Percy had an idea. Grabbing his girlfriend's hand, he pulled her into the living room. He didn't tell her what he was up to and connected his phone (monster proof) to the speakers behind the couch.
A song started to play throughout the apartment, Say You Won't Let Go. It was one of Percy's favorite songs, and though it sounded cheesy, it was because the song reminded him of Annabeth.
"We're going to dance and just have a good time," Percy explained when he noticed the confusion clearly visible on Annabeth's features. "Because we never get to just be normal teenagers."
"Okay, Seaweed Brain." He extended his hand out toward her and she grabbed it, not expecting to be pulled toward him. Annabeth let out a shriek as she flew forward, laughing when she gained her balance back.
He spun her around, loving the bright smile that she only let him see. It was known to everyone who knew Annabeth that she was guarded. It was hard to get to know her. She didn't let people in just like that, you had to seriously earn her trust.
But Percy gained all the trust she had. Every ounce of it. He deserved to see all of her, know everything about her. She had this one smile. A smile she only used toward him, it was big and lit up her eyes. It wasn't just lips either, her teacher also shone, all pearly white.
It was one of his favorite features about her.
He pulled her close again and held her, their hands clasped. This was what he was living for. This is what kept him going and he never wanted to lose it. Annabeth rested the side of her face on his shoulder.
Unexpectedly, Percy pushed her away again and started doing his own little dance that had Annabeth's knees weak. She was laughing, harder than she's ever laughed before and she felt herself falling even more in love with this boy.
"You can't just stand there!" Percy exclaimed as he continued to dance in his own little bubble. "Gotta loosen up! Who knows when we'll get to do this again."
Sadly, it was true. They were demigods, they weren't supposed to live as long as they already have. Their lives could end any day at any time. No one knew what the fates had in store for them.
But Annabeth didn't let the depressing thoughts stop her from having fun with her boyfriend. Thoughts like that could wait for a long, long time.
Pushing them aside, Annabeth started doing- well she didn't know. It was just a dance, nothing particular but Percy was laughing at her so she knew it was ridiculous. "That could for you?"
"Much better," Percy laughed and grabbed her hands, moving them between them much like they did at their senior prom a couple months ago. That brought up some good memories. He had so much fun that night and was sad that he'd only get to go once.
Anyway, Percy put the smile back on his face and spun Annabeth around then brought her to his chest. He leaned down and kissed her deeply, pouring everything he had into it. The kiss was soft and slow, just like she liked them.
The timer to the oven snapped them out of it. They pulled away and Percy changed the music to more upbeat songs. As they were going to the kitchen, Annabeth ran ahead, jumped, and clicked her heels together.
Percy laughed. "Impressive."
"I know right." She threw oven mittens at his face.
He slipped them on and grabbed the cupcake pan, somehow still managing to burn his arm. He yelped and dropped the pan onto the stove. Luckily the cupcakes stayed in place, probably because they were rock solid.
"Seaweed Brain!" Annabeth shouted. "How'd you manage to do that?"
"I don't know!" He turned on the sink and slipped his arm under the water. The burn immediately faded. "Good thing I can heal with water, right, Wise Girl?"
She shoved him. "Oh don't get a big head."
"I'm not. I was just stating a face," Percy defended.
"Well that's the first," Annabeth teased him. "You do have frosting right?"
Percy tapped his chin. "Frosting... frosting...yes." He opened a cabinet and pulled out a container of it, handing it to Annabeth who already had to butter knives in her hands.
They frosted the cupcakes in silence. At least, it was silent until Annabeth thought it would be funny to swipe the frosting off the butter knife with her finger so she could literally paint the tip of Percy's nose.
"Very funny." Percy did the same with her nose.
Once the cupcakes were all frosted and their noses were free of frosting, they sat down on the counter and devoured half of them. Percy couldn't help it as he watched Annabeth eat her third cupcake, he leaned over and kissed her cheek.
"What?" She asked with a mouthful. "Sorry."
Percy smiled. "Thank you."
She swallowed. "What for?"
"Being with me, making me happy," Percy answered.
"Anytime." Annabeth leaned over and pecked his lips.
Percy stood. "Wanna build a fort?"
Annabeth laughed. "So random. But sure." She followed him into his (practically theirs) bedroom and grabbed all the blankets they could find. Percy grabbed the pillows.
They got back to the living room and just stood there. "How do you suppose we do this? You're the architect," Percy pointed out.
"Would your mom mind if we used the chairs?" She pointed to the kitchen. Percy shook his head and she dropped the blankets on his feet, going to grab the chairs. "A little help, Seaweed Brain."
Percy dropped the pillows and went to grab a couple chairs.
Now with the chairs placed around the room like Annabeth said, they started placing the blankets on top. The blankets were soon done being placed where they needed to be, or more where Annabeth wanted them to be.
They started putting the pillows inside but that resulted in a pillow fight. Annabeth, as always, won and had to boast in his face about it. Of course, Percy didn't care, it was a stupid pillow fight! Plus, he loved her too much to make her upset.
"How are we gonna see the TV?" Percy asked, stumped.
"We can use my laptop," Annabeth suggested and headed down the hallway to her room.
"Isn't that for architecture stuff?" Percy called after her.
"The other one, Percy!" Annabeth called back, laughing.
He waited patiently for her to come back. After the course of five minutes he got bored of just sitting there so he went to find her. She was in the bathroom brushing her teeth. She met his eyes in the mirror and smiled.
"Hi," Annabeth said once she spit out the toothpaste and rinsed her mouth.
Percy grinned. "Hey." He surged forward and enveloped her in his arms from behind, nuzzling his face in her neck. "I love you."
She reached her hand up and ran her fingers through his hair. "I love you too. Brush your teeth."
Percy groaned but did as he was told. After he rinsed his mouth he resumed hugging his girlfriend from behind.
"Percy, as much as I love your hugs, we are still in the bathroom," Annabeth noted, grabbing her laptop off the counter.
"Right." Percy let her go and they walked back to the living room, turning off the lights as they went by.
They snuggled up underneath the blankets in their fort. Annabeth opened her laptop and pulled up netflix, picking a random movie for them to watch. Although, Annabeth wasn't really watching it.
She turned onto her side, up against Percy, and laid her head on his chest, also intertwining their legs. Turning away from the screen, she grabbed Percy's arm and traced his SPQR tattoo, still not a big fan of it.
It reminded her that he once thought he was Roman. Forgot about who he truly was, a demigod Greek hero. But, he remembered her and that kind of made up for it.
"Did it hurt?" She asked as she traced the trident.
"Hm?" Percy turned his head away from the laptop to look at his girlfriend.
Annabeth tapped the trident. "The tattoo. Did it hurt?"
"Oh, no, not really." He rolled over on his side and wrapped his arms around her tightly. "I love you, Wise Girl."
"I love you too," She mumbled into his chest before they both fell asleep.
About an hour later, Sally, Paul, and Estelle came home. It was late, maybe around midnight and Estelle was asleep against Paul's shoulder. The first thing they noticed were all the lights were off and a soft sound came from the living room.
Sally laughed as she spotted the fort, assuming that two teenagers were sleeping inside.
Percy woke up to pressure on his chest. He blinked open his eyes and saw baby blue ones staring back down at him. His one year old sister giggled and laid down on top of him, her head against his chest.
"Hey, Stella." He sat up, wrapping his arms around her.
What a nice thing to wake up to.
