Car Rides and Apples Continued, Again
Percy's POV
The drive to school was quiet. Annabeth didn't talk much and I could tell she was thinking about something. It was probably best not to disturb her.
When we arrived my parents were waiting out front. I climbed out opening Annabeth's door then walking over to my parents. I sucked in a deep breath of air and was about to open the doors to go inside when there was a bright flash. Immediately I reached in my pocket, uncapped Riptide , and spun pointing my sword. My dad, Poseidon, smirked.
"It's just me Percy." He laughed. I sighed lowering my sword. I gave him a quick hug before turning back around. I shook my head smiling. He actually came. I wasn't sure if he would.
The trip to the classroom was easy and my teacher was waiting. He stood upon my arrival coming to shake hands. He already knew me, my mom, and Paul.
"You are?" He asked my dad. He smiled shaking his hand.
"I'm his neighbor. Known the kid my whole life." I bit back a laugh and my dad winked at me.
Before he could ask Annabeth stuck out her hand.
"Annabeth Chase." He nodded. Then walked over to his desk perching on the edge.
"Please sit." I sat in my usual spot with Annabeth next to me. My mom and Paul sat one row behind us, and my Dad sat in my teacher's extra wheely chair. Why? I don't know, but hey, I had been dying to try it out all year.
"So, I'm sure you all know why you are here. Percy's graduation. But, before I give him his well earned diploma I would like to say a few words. First of all, Percy has been my top student all year. A's on every exam. He has an immense knowledge of sea life and marine biology. I have never seen kid with so much prior knowledge. As you all are aware I gave him permission to graduate early. I do not regret it in the slightest. So I wish you the best of luck in the future Mr. Jackson." That's when he pulled my diploma out of his desk and strode over setting it in my hands.
"Perseus Jackson, Graduating on January 2nd , the year of 2015." I smiled shaking his hand. Annabeth kissed me on the cheek beaming from ear to ear. My mom crushed me in a hug and Paul patted me on the back. My dad winked. The rest was a blur.
I exited the class when my Dad, and Paul pulled me aside. They waved Annabeth and my mom on. I looked at them confused.
"Do you want to take this? I'll back you up." Paul offered. My dad laughed.
"Sure." He looked me in the eye and continued. "Okay kid, so Paul, your mom, and I all know what you are planning tonight. Annabeth's parents obviously. Are you sure you're going to go through with it. I mean I'm with you." I laughed.
"Yeah! Of course." He nodded looking at Paul.
"That's good enough for me! You?" Paul nodded. I turned to leave when my Dad caught my arm.
"She'll love it." Waving I jogged back to the car. Annabeth was leaning on the frame and I unlocked it. I slipped inside the drivers seat. When we were safely in the car I told her the plan.
"So, I have my mom's permission to take you to Montauk as a celebration. No funny business as she says. Though, I don't know why she says it we are both smarter than that. Also, we will be staying two nights. Everything we need is there. My mom stocked up on food. All we need is to stop by camp, grab some cloths, and we are good to go. Also, there will be a few other surprises while we are there and one of them requires a dress so bring one." For once she didn't grown at the dress comment but looked puzzled. With that we drove back to camp.
As soon as we got there she made a bet. We had to race and see who got done the fastest.
"1...2...3!" She called. I took off down the hill sprinting to my cabin. I dodged campers and got a few angry looks. Especially the one from Clarisse. In a matter of seconds I was in my cabin. Tyson jumped upon my arrival.
"Are you racing Annabeth?" He asked I nodded. Then he continued. "Daddy told me what you planned. I tell you good luck." I smiled at him shoving things in my suitcase. When I was finished I gave him a hug.
"Thanks bud. Now that I'm gone though I need you to keep camp in check. We children of Poseidon are the strongest! So while I'm gone I want you to be the camp leader. If you need help ask Jason." He nodded. With that I turned booking it towards the hill. I saw Annabeth almost to the base. I shook my head. She probably even folded her clothes. It turns out because of my long stride I got to the top at the same time as her. She laughed.
"Tie?" I nodded and put her things in the trunk. Then we climbed in the car and headed to Montauk. When we got there the sun was setting.
Annabeth hopped put and went to pop the trunk. While she was getting that taken care of I went and inspected the cabin. Everything was in order and my mom had even made the beds. Wondering why it was taking Annabeth so long I stepped out side. She had stopped just a few feet outside of the door. Her expression was guarded. That's when I realized why she didn't want to come inside. When she was little her family took a trip out of state. They had slept in a large cabin like this. Her dad had business there so he wasn't home much. She told me that when she went to bed spiders swarmed the walls and floor. It happened every night and her mom didn't believe her.
"Hey, I know what this reminds you of. I promise though that its not like that. There aren't...you know. Besides if we had to we could sleep on the beach." She shook her head and displayed a small smile.
"Sorry I'm being silly. It's okay... I trust you." With that she followed me inside. Once we had put everything up where it needed to be I opened up the cupboards.
"So, what do you want for sinner?" I asked. She smirked.
"You know how to cook?" I frowned.
"Maybe a little. Besides, you can help me!" I turned back around and my jaw dropped. Everything was blue. "Mom!" I whined. Annabeth laughed. I thought for a second.
"Do tacos sound good?" She smiled.
"Sure." Pulling things off the shelves and the little freezer I set to work. After a few minutes We had blue tacos. I sat down at the small table. I realized that Annabeth hadn't heard me when I said that dinner was ready. She was reading, of course. Walking over I snatched up her book. She looked at me like I was dead.
"That is the climax!" She whined. I shook my head.
"No, reading. It's dinner time." She frowned crossing her arms. Then she kissed me. Though, I knew this trick. She reached for the book thinking I wouldn't notice but I held it away. When she pulled back I smirked. "Thanks for the kiss." She rolled her eyes before sitting down. We ate, and talked for a while before I leaned back in my chair.
"So, I was wondering. Do you want to look at the stars?" She looked up with a smile.
"Yeah." I took her hand and we walked outside finding a nice spot in the sand. It was different out here away from the city. The stars were in clear view and the nights were darker. There were no city lights illuminating the sky. I listened to the waves flow silently while Annabeth showed me knew constellations. I kept butchering there names and she laughed every time. Eventually though, we went silent. I looked over at Annabeth and it was hard to see anything but her eyes.
"Perce?" She asked. I turned propping myself up on my elbow.
"Yeah?"
"I've been wondering, and this probably sounds like a stupid thing to say but, how come my mom never showed up?" I frowned knowing what she meant. My dad had come to my graduation but Athena never showed up for Annabeth. I lay back down on my back taking her hand.
"I don't know." It was an honest answer. I could never figure anything out between the two of them. She nodded, then shifted resting her head on my chest. She was listening to my heart again.
"Thank you." She whispered. I frowned.
"For what?"
"Everything." I smiled kissing the top of her head. We stayed like that for a while. Eventually though we had to get up and go to sleep. As I lay in the separate bunk I found that now matter how hard I tried there was no way, I was going to sleep. Quietly I got up and changed into my swim trunks. I left Annabeth to sleep.
I stood at the edge of the surf letting the waves lap at my feet. With a small smile I went deeper until I could submerge myself entirely. The world underneath the water was entirely different at night. It had taken a while but I had lost my fear of drowning. I am sad to admit though that I had to have help from Apollo.
I willed the currents to carry me farther out and deeper. Of course they obeyed. Shapes of fish moved through the dark followed by the tangled arms of seaweed and coral. The most impressive of all though was the jellyfish. They glowed in reds, purples, blues, and oranges. I smiled because never before had I seen the ocean like this. The little creatures danced and swam, mixing the water and glowing in different intensities.
After dozens of minutes I resurfaced. I turned to the shore and saw the shadow of a person. I knew who it was. Excitedly I sped towards her. When I got out though She didn't come to greet me.
"Wise girl?" I asked. I came closer and sat by her. Almost immediately I realized she was shaking. "Nightmare?" She nodded.
"You went swimming?" She asked. This sparked my excitement again.
"Hey! I know exactly what will cheer you up!" I stood taking her hand and pulling her to her feet.
"What're you doing?" She questioned with a quiet laugh.
"Cheering you up! You can tell me all about the bad things later. There's something I want you to see." She smiled. Some of the light back in her eyes.
"Okay." With that I pulled her into the water. Wrapping my arms around her waist I sped our air bubble back out to sea. It was a short trip and soon we were floating back in front of the jellyfish. Annabeth gave a small squeak. I turned to see her mouth hanging open and her eyes full of wonder.
"It's beautiful." She said. I laughed and watched as the shapes bounced and moved through out the water. We spent the rest of the night exploring the sea. Of course we did get to sleep. But only a little.
The next morning Annabeth was still in awe about last nights adventure. We talked about it over breakfast , with her mumbling certain things to herself, which I assumed, were facts about the sea creatures. When we were finished I snuggled up with her on one of the beds while she read. I listened as she played with my hair. She read about a girl named after a playing card. There were tunnels and monsters. Builders, breeders, and hunters. We stayed like that for an hour or two until she finished. Grudgingly we ate lunch. After that we did more exploring in the ocean before returning to the cabin.
That's when my plan kicked into action. I jumped in the shower while Annabeth cooked dinner. When I had changed into my shorts and shirt I scribbled on a piece of paper before leaving it on the bathroom counter. I entered the kitchen area right when Annabeth finished setting the table.
"Man I have great timing!" She laughed, sitting down. Instead of sitting across from her I pulled up my chair so that our elbows touched. She looked up at me pleasure in her eyes. We ate like that our thighs touching. We laughed and smiled, and it felt like the world didn't exist. I felt like I could do this forever. That's when I remembered what I planned to do tonight.
When we finished it was time for Annabeth to get cleaned up. As soon as the door closed I changed. I through on my nice white dress shirt, black pants, and shiny shoes. Soon I was outside in the frigid air of January. I walked hastily to the pier. Once there I stood watching the waves. I knew it was only a few more minutes till she showed up. Zoning out I sucked in the fresh sea air letting it steal my nerves. I ran the contents of the note over in my head.
To Annabeth:
Hello madame. A young fine looking man is waiting for you at the pier. Wear something nice please. Also, remember, you have never met before. All previous memories are gone for the time being. You are meeting for the first time. :)
Goodbye, unknown.
Of course she obviously knew who wrote the note. After all there were only two people here that could have written it.
The waves rolled steadily against the wood of the pier. I almost didn't see her come up beside me. I realized she had brought her jacket. Perfect. I had something hidden in there. She stood for a second before grinning like a mad man.
" Are you waiting for someone?" She asked. I turned pretending to notice her for the first time. When I looked at her she had a playful smile , and my breath caught in my throat. She wore a knee length red dress that fit her snuggly with elbow length sleeves.
"Actually I am. You?" She laughed quietly.
"Yeah." She brushed her hair behind her ear looking out at the waves. "You look like you have been waiting a while." She stated. I smiled.
"I have but I am genuinely bored." I looked at her meeting her gaze. "You look remarkable."
She blushed a deep shade of red.
"As do you."
"Do you like walks?" She nodded. "Well lucky you. I love them and I need something to pass the time."
I gently took her jacket leading the way down the pier. The sun was setting casting the sky into a frenzy of hues. I stepped off the pier and onto the stairs. Looking back I took her hand pretending to help her down. I lead her up and into the city, still holding her hand.
The lights of the shops blinked with perfect contrast to the night. Almost no one was out around this time. It was quiet warm in the morning, especially in late winter, but night was a different story. I noticed her shiver and I slipped it around her shoulders. She peeked at me from the corner of her eyes.
"I can't believe no one showed up. Are you sure you were waiting for someone?" She asked.
"Him. Curious are we? In fact I was. Why do you ask?" She smirked.
"So maybe we can do more than walk?" I smiled.
"Anything." With that she stepped closer to me and we walked a few streets gazing at the lights and overall quietness of the night. Eventually I returned to the pier. She laced her fingers with mine.
"Why?" I asked sounding surprised and looking at our hands. She smiled stopping and meeting me eyes.
"Ever heard of love at first sight?" I nodded. "That hardly exists. I feel as though I have known you forever." I smiled looking down at her.
"As do I." She smiled her eyes full happiness that warmed me despite the cold. I took her other hand in mine
"I think its time to remember." She said. She stood on her tip toes and I leaned in kissing her. It was sweet and enticing. We shared the same air, her lips sweet against mine. It was a good couple of minutes before we pulled back.
"I remember. I never truly forgot." I whispered. She stared at me.
"You were never waiting for someone." She said and I winked. I took her hand leading her to the end of the pier. As if on cue, well of course it was on cue I planned it, a song started up. I knew who was playing it and I said a silent thanks to the man of sunshine, whom also goes by the name Fred. Annabeth cocked her head to, listening.
It's a drop in the ocean,
a change in the weather,
I was praying that we might end up together.
I turned Giving a slight bow.
"Care to dance?" She shrugged out of her jacket and took my hand.
"Gladly." With that she shifted her hands and I put one on her waist, the other fitted into hers. I stepped swaying, and spinning. The music accompining us. Her face lit up and I twirled her watching as she moved effortlessly. We made our way down the pier all the while twisting and spinning. My heart fluttered a little in my chest. We worked like an oiled machine perfectly at ease. Though we never practiced, it was like we were the same person. It was as if she knew to , and in that moment I knew how much it would hurt if I eveer lost her. I watched as she came to the same realization we stepped closer together, our movements flowing to the song.
It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I'm holding you closer than most 'cause you are my heaven
I don't wanna waste the weekend
If you don't love me pretend
A few more hours then it's time to go
As my train rolls down the east coast I wonder how you keep warm
It's too late to cry
Too broken to move on
I stared into her eyes completely lost in the moment never wanting it to end. Her dress flowed and I was mezmerized at her grace. I smiled as she saw me staring. With a wink I dipped her pecking her lips before continueing the procession.
And still I can't let you be
Most nights I hardly sleep
Don't take what you don't need from me
It's just a drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I'm holding you closer than most 'cause you are my heaven
Misplaced trust in old friends
Never counting regrets
By the grace of God I do not rest at all
And New England as the leaves change
The last excuse that I'll claim
I was a boy who loved a woman like a little girl
And still I can't let you be
Most nights I hardly sleep
Don't take what you don't need from me
Looking at her brought back some of my favorite memories. I knew she'd always be there for me chasing away the nightmares, helping me with anything she could , because that was how much I meant to her. Little did she know how much she meant to me. Tomight she would know for sure. all that was needed was an answer.
It's just a drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I'm holding you closer than most 'cause you are my...
Heaven doesn't seem far away anymore
No, no
Heaven doesn't seem far away
Heaven doesn't seem far away anymore
No, no
Heaven doesn't seem far away
Oh, oh
It's just a drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It's like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I'm holding you closer than most 'cause you are my heaven
You are my heaven
We had made it back to the end of the pier just as the song ended.
"Wow I really have good timing!" She laughed, shaking her head as she wrapped her arms around me. We leaned on eachother standing still. It was only when I noticed that her skin was prickled with goose bumps, did we pull away. I stooped picking up her jacket and helping her shrug it on. As if for the first time she noticed that something was in her pocket. I watched as she reached into the brown leather pocket and I reached into my back pocket. She pulled the object out, half of an apple. She smiled.
"What?" Was all she asked, with a small laugh. Reaching out I took her hand, with the apple, and held it out. Then, I produced my half. I watched as her eyes got big. I placed our two halves together and immediatly on touch they melted together. Now I held one apple. I tossed it ligtly to her, through the si inch gap. She easily caught it but when she looked up her eyes were shining. Thee was happiness, disbelief, and an overwhelming sense of pleasur in them as if she already knew what that meant.
"Percy... did you just-?
"Propose?" I asked cutting her off. That;s when I reached into my pocket again. I felt the little ring, and I knew every inch of it, every color, and groove. I had stared at it for over two months now. Then I slipped it on her finger before she could retort. "I'm afraid I did."
She practically leapt into my arms, her smile bigger than the sun. When she pulled back she kissed me, with passion. A single tear ran down her cheek and I kissed it away.
" You are the biggest gift I have ever recieved. I always thought that my future would suck. But, when I met you, when I was twelve years old, I knew things were different. I didn't realize that I liked you more than a friend. My first htouhgt was tha you were pretty. I always knew that about you. When ou started to seriously become beautiful that's when I knew. I tried to ignore it, but we bothe knoe how that turned out. You are my worl, Annabeht Chase. Without you I would die. I need you more than you know. My Mom and Dad came here, I came here with my Mom, now you are here with me. This is where my family is, some of my best memories, and where i was loved. NOw you are oficcially my family, so now I can share this place with you. So, will you marry me, my beautiful Wise Girl?" She smiled bigger at my words, if that was even possible.
"I've already said yes." With that we kissed under the stars. Where the whole worl could see if they wanted to. All that mattered was me and my Wise Girl.
