"Hey! My wallet! It's lost!"
Singto smirked as he threw away the wallet of the man who was shouting in the middle of the busy road, after making sure he transferred all the money in it to his pocket.
Putting on his sunglasses, he walked away while the man's shouts and screams echoed in his ears. He glanced back for one last time see the man in suit panic.
"Money hungry bitches," Singto scoffed.
With a smile engraved on his lips, he walked towards the homeless man who sat at the corner of a shop.
"Uncle," Singto sat on his knees in front of the man. Smiling warmly as he kept the stack of money in front of him.
"This is for me?" The old man's eyes widened when Singto nodded his head.
"I-Thank you," He bowed his head, tears whelmed up in the corner of his eyes.
Singto shook his head, taking the latter's hand in his. "Don't, uncle."
"Take this money, buy some new clothes and food. Try to find some work too."
The old man nodded his head, "I'll, thank you, young man. May God shower his blessings upon you."
Singto smiled as he felt the hand of the old man on his head, blessing him. He nodded his head before he stood up, waking away after bowing in respect to the elder.
He walked ahead with a wide smile on his lips, feeling a sense of happiness he couldn't explain. He had seen the old man sitting at the same place for over a few months, and he would always try to give some money to him or buy him food.
And it vexed him that day when he found some conceited, avaricious man in suit throw harsh words at the homeless man. Not even giving him a penny, rather than that insulting him for 30 minutes straight. And Singto was determined to make that man go crazy, even for a day, for a minute.
So he did what he knew. He stole the man's wallet. And he wasn't surprised to see a huge sum of money in it and a few credit cards.
He took the money and left the credit cards in there, he didn't want to do anything with it as he threw it away. He had his leather gloves on, so he wasn't afraid of the man filing a complaint against him after finding his wallet. Depends on the luck of the man though, whether he finds his belong or not. He didn't care.
Singto kicked a stone off on his way, whistling as he walked down the familiar path to the grocery shop he worked at. Noises of children chattering and laughing filling the air as he walked closer to the shop. They had a kids park nearby and thankfully, it brought a liveliness to their shop.
Even a person who isn't fond of children like him agrees to the fact that the noises of the tiny human beings clear out their boredom from setting things up the racks and helping the customers.
Singto makes his way into the shop and he was way surprised seeing the number of people inside. It's going to be a long day he guess so.
He greeted some of the workers there before making his way inside the storeroom to change his clothes to the staffs' uniform.
This was his life, working daily at the shop and returning back home in the evening to his small apartment room. And he very much enjoyed the silence of his life. And him stealing money, or rather performing theft was a part of his life. He doesn't know from when he started doing it, it was a part of his life as far as he knew. He had been walking down the wrong path ever since he knew. Well, he was brought up in between thieves and criminals, and he was taught to do the same as he grew up. It was his only way of livelihood back then.
It's not until a few years back that he came out of the shell and tried to find a decent job. But it was hard for him to move away from performing theft, it was in his head all the while. It was something he was pro at from a very young age.
Growing in slums was hard for everyone, and so does it for him. He only received basic education, and he couldn't find a much better job than he's doing now at the grocery shop with it.
People always told that it was never too late to change. But like everything else in life, it was easier said than done.
But, he's trying. It just irks him to use his so-called skills when he finds rapacious men like those he met in the morning, he's just too glad to make them go crazy. He wouldn't use that money though, he never did, he'll either give them to the homeless or put it for charity.
And he was never caught for it. He was very much glad for it. No one suspected him too. And that's the only reason people in the slum praised him to perform more of them. He never leaves a trail behind.
"Singto! Stop daydreaming! Come on! We're on short of staff!"
Singto turned his head towards his co-worker, he rolled his eyes as he gave a thumbs up.
Making his way out of the room, he took a deep breath. Walking ahead to do his job.
He stopped in his tracks as soon as he saw a little girl, hugging a plushie in her hands. He could see her shoulders were shaking and one of his hands kept rubbing her cheeks.
Singto raised an eyebrow, what was this kid doing alone here?
He isn't fond of dealing with kids but as a human being, he felt the urge to check if the kid was okay. So he made his way towards the child. As soon as he got near her, he heard soft sobs from her.
"Hey," Singto called out softly, coming to stand in front of her.
A pair of teary doe eyes met his. And Singto found himself gulping, he doesn't know what to do now.
"Why are you crying, kid? Is something wrong?" Singto knelt in front of her.
She nodded her head, sniffling as he wiped her tears away.
"Why are you here alone? Where's your mom or dad?"
She sobbed louder and it alarmed Singto.
"Hey! Hey! Please don't cry! What happened?" He panicked.
"I-I can't find D-Daddy," she sniffled, hugging her plushie tighter.
Singto sighed, "Ok, don't worry. We'll find him, ok?"
"Will you?" She looked at him with wide eyes.
Singto couldn't help but chuckle, "Of course, kid. We'll find him. By the way, what's your name?"
"Daddy said I shouldn't say my name to strangers," she pouted.
"But I'll tell you!" Singto chuckled at it.
"I'm Sophia, but daddy calls me Sophi!"
Singto ruffled her hair, "Ok Sophia, we'll go search for your daddy."
A pout soon formed on her lips, "Daddy might be worried."
Singto sighed, getting up on his feet he walked towards the shelf nearby that had candies and took a large heart-shaped lollipop from it.
"Here, take this," Singto handed the candy to Sophia.
"For me?" A smile immediately bloomed on her face when Singto nodded her head.
"Thank you!" She giggled.
"Now come, we'll find your dad. What's his name?"
"Daddy."
Singto stopped in his tracks, staring down at the little girl who unwrapped the plastic around the candy and started savoring the lollipop.
"I asked you, what's your daddy's name, Sophia?"
Sophia looked up, "His name is daddy, I call him daddy."
Singto groaned, facepalming internally. What was he going to do now?
"Ok, we'll make an announcement then." Singto sighed, taking Sophia's hand in his he walked towards the counter to talk to the manager.
"There!" Sophia shouted suddenly making Singto turn his head towards her.
"What is it, Sophia?" Singto asked. Looking at the way Sophia was pointing at. People were already looking at them and Singto wasn't liking the attention.
"Daddy was there! He told me to not move from my place when I'm lost!" Sophia dragged Singto with her small hand towards the racks.
"Then why did you move in the first place?" Singto tried his best to not sound annoyed.
Sophia pouted, "I saw a puppy so I followed it. Forgot about daddy."
Her voice was low and Singto could see how guilty she was. Another thing was, where the hell did a puppy came from!?
"Ok, but we'll announce about you in the mic. Your daddy can come to fetch you then," Singto tried to reason.
"No, I'll wait here!" Sophia licked the lollipop.
Singto let out a frustrated groan. He had other things to look after at and he cannot waste time on this.
He carried Sophia in his arms and turned around, the little girl shouted for him to stay.
"Listen, Sophia, we'll have to find your daddy soon. Your daddy might be crying, worried about you."
Sophia sniffled, "I don't what daddy to cry."
"Exactly! So we can't waste time!" Singto took a deep breath, walking away. He groaned mentally at the attention they were receiving.
"Sophi!"
Singto turned on his heels when he heard a voice calling for the child in his arms. He immediately found Sophia rush out of his arms.
"Daddy!!"
Singto gulped as he watched Sophia run into the arms of a young man, clad in a black polo shirt and jeans. He stared at the man who was peppering kisses on his daughter's face.
"Sophi! How many times should I tell you to not run away from daddy?" The man caressed the girl's hair.
"Sophi is sorry, daddy. I won't repeat it," she sniffled.
The man sighed, giving a small dimpled smile. "It's ok, don't cry now. Daddy is here."
Sophia nodded. Leaning her head on her Daddy's chest.
"Where did you get this from?" The man pointed at the large candy in her hand.
Sophia perched up suddenly, looking around to find a familiar face and she smiled wide when she found it.
"There! That uncle gave me this! And daddy! He helped me to find you!" Sophia pointed at Singto who started fidgeting in his place.
The man walked towards him and smiled wide, and Singto found himself staring at the dimple in his cheeks.
"Thank you soo much! Sophi might have been scared, I'm grateful that you helped her."
Singto shook his head, "It's fine. I was just doing what any human would do."
The man nodded his head, "Thank you again. I was about to go to bill the things when I realized Sophi was missing."
Singto chuckled, "It's ok. Next time please be more careful."
"Yeah, I'll."
"Come on, I'll bill your things," Singto pointed at the trolly the man had left behind when Sophia ran towards him.
The man chuckled, "Oh-Yeah, thanks."
Singto nodded before turning on his heels as he walked towards the billing counter.
The father and daughter walked behind and they were able to bill their groceries without standing in the long queues thankfully. Singto had just opened the billing counter he uses, so people weren't lining up in front of it, he could easily bill the other's things.
"What about this?" The man pointed at the candy in Sophia's hand.
"She told me you took it from the candy section."
Singto chuckled, finishing up the billing of the groceries and waiting for the bill to be printed out.
"Don't worry about it, it's on me. She can have it."
"But-"
Singto shook his head, "I said it's on me. Don't bother about it."
The man chuckled, nodding his head. He payed for the groceries and took the plastic bags in his hand.
"Bye, uncle!" Sophia waved her hands at Singto, sending a flying kiss.
Singto waved back, chuckling. And he isn't sure but he might have seen the man staring at him for a little too long, with a beautiful smile decorating his fair skin.
*****
Singto narrowed his eyes as he stared at the two men who were talking with eachother. He watched one of them handing a suitcase to the other and in return getting three paper packets.
Singto smirked when he saw the man check the cash inside those packets. He could feel his heart beating fast against his chest as he watched the man with the suitcase get inside a car.
He took a deep breath, "Just this once, it's only a little help."
Singto gulped, watching the car pass away. He has to take that packets from the man and give it to his friend. He knows he shouldn't be doing this but when his friend asked him to, he couldn't help but agree.
He only had a few friends, who were there with him at the slum and one of them needed his help.
The latter has called him two days ago, telling him about the incident that happened. He isn't supportive of the line of work his friend is doing but he can't judge him when he himself has a black spot in his life. He was against the request at first but when he heard what the issue was about he couldn't help but agree to it. Moreover, his friends helped him a lot during the past, they never asked a lot from him, so he gave it a try.
One of the big men in their slum had cheated his friend, the money the man in front of him had was supposed to be with his friend at the point.
Thus coming to the conclusion of him stealing the money from the latter and giving it to his friend. No one would suspect. It had been years since he had gone back to the place he had grown in, so the man in front of him, who was familiar, wouldn't recognize him. And he had a black cloth covering half of his face.
"Time for action," Singto positioned himself as he watched the man turn around and admire the stack of money in his hand as he walked towards his own car.
He heard the man let out a dirty laugh as he fanned the cash on his face.
"Poor guy gonna lose it soon," Singto smirked, soon sprinting on his heels.
Singto ran into the man and kicked his leg, letting out a painful groan from the latter. Twisting his hand, Singto took out the cash from his hand.
"Fuck! Don't you dare!" The man shouted in his deep groggy voice.
Singto kicked the man's stomach, he had wanted to do it to the man for a long time. He had made him suffer a lot.
Singto punched him on the face making the man lose his grip on the packet in his hand and cover his nose.
"Shit!" Singto's eyes widened when he heard the siren of the police car. He didn't wait for another second as he kicked the man one last time and ran away deeper into the alley.
It was night and Singto was glad the darkness wouldn't help the police to catch him.
Or, he thought so.
"Don't run! Hands up!"
Singto heard a voice behind him but he didn't care, he just kept running. His heart was beating fast, his grip on the cash tightened as he tries to shove them into his jacket.
"I said stop!"
Singto didn't know why the voice seemed soo familiar to him, but he wasn't in the state to think about it. The only thing that ran through his mind was to escape.
He never got caught. But maybe, as they say, everything has a first time.
"Shit!" Singto hissed when a pair of hands circled around his waist. The next thing he knew was him being pinned on the floor.
And his mask was ripped off from his face.
A pair of hazel eyes, shining from the moonlight was staring into his. Both of them panting, too shocked to react. Singto felt the cold breath of the other fanning his face.
"S-Singto!"
The recipient of the name let out a grown. Can the day be any worse?
It was the same man who had been making him doubt his principles of being alone in life for two weeks! It was Sophia's father. And Singto doesn't know what he should be doing, he felt the urge to explain himself but he doesn't want to do anything with a cop!
Does he even have to ask from where this man got to know his name from!?
"Leave me!" Singto glared at the man.
The other smirked, completely changing from his confused state, "Do I have to?"
Singto panted, their face was extremely close and it was making him uncomfortable.
"I didn't know you were a thief," the officer's eyes stared down at the parted lips of the other man.
"And I didn't know you were a cop," Singto scoffed.
"You're under an officer and yet you have this arrogant mouth of yours," the officer smirked, tracing his finger on Singto's cheeks.
"Leave. Me. Alone."
The officer chuckled, "Why should I? I got the culprit. I should take you to the station."
Singto groaned. The man's weight over him was not helping either. He was completely hating the man in front of him, whom once started to make him feel special for.
And what made him hate the latter more was that he was a police officer. He hated them! Any thief would, right? And he was just one of them.
"I can explain," Singto panted, he was still trying to maintain his breath from running with his life.
"What will you explain? We saw you robbing the man with our own eyes," the officer stood up, his palm clutched across Singto's wrist as he pulled the latter up.
"See! You guys didn't see my face! I can just say you misunderstood me!"
The officer glared at Singto, soon pushing him to the wall. He moved closer to him, smirking when he heard a gasp from the other.
"I'm an officer, Singto. I can tell them that I caught you and show the money in your pocket as proof."
Singto closed his eyes. What has he gotten himself into?
"But, I can help you."
Singto snapped his eyes open, staring at the officer with wide eyes.
"W-what?"
"I said I can help you," The officer leaned in and whispered into his ears.
"And I should believe that? You're a cop!" Singto scoffed.
The officer chuckled, "It's your choice, baby. You can either believe me or let me drag you away to the station."
Singto let himself stare into the officer's eyes. There was this mischief playing in them that made Singto doubt the officer would make anything easy for him.
He didn't even know the latter's name when the other knew his. And Singto would be blind to not see the other's approaches.
It's been a whole two weeks since the incident of him meeting Sophia and her father. Ever since that, the father and daughter made regular appearances at the shop, and this very man would let Sophia speak to him for as long as she wants. And the man would stand there, gazing at his face with this twinkle in his eyes.
Singto never felt soo self-conscious in his life. And he who DOESN'T like children was kind enough to bear with Sophia!
But now, it was a whole 360-degree turn. He didn't know what he should be doing.
"I would love to stare at you like this for hours but we don't have much time, baby."
"Stop calling me that!" Singto glared at the officer who laughed.
"Feisty!"
Singto rolled his eyes, "I know you won't simply help me like that, what do you want me to do?"
The officer gave a proud smile to him, "My boy is intelligent."
"So here's my demand, you'll be given two choices. You can choose."
Singto raised his eyebrows, waiting for the other to continue.
"Number one, you have to stay in my house and be a good parent for Sophia in the morning, and..." The officer trailed his gun's mouth on Singto's cheeks.
"Surrender to Daddy in the night," he pointed at himself, the smirk on his lips unwavering.
"What the fuck!? Hell no!" Singto pushed the officer away, but the other's grip on his wrist stayed strong.
His eyes widened and he could feel the sweat prickling on the back of his neck. Feeling the hair on the it stand up.
Krist laughed, "And the second choice is-"
"You'll be imprisoned for 10 years."
"What!?" Singto gasped.
"It's your choice, baby. Either you go to prison or be a good baby for me."
"You can't just put me in jail like that!"
The officer laughed, "You're telling that to a cop, baby. I know the law, I can either put you in a 2nd-degree burglary case or get you in with the man who you just robbed from. And by the way, thanks for keeping that man in place. We have been in search of him for months."
Singto's mouth hangs open, the man in front of him was clearly abusing his power on him.
But, did he have a choice?
"I'll give you one night to think, and don't try to escape baby, because I know where to find you."
Singto groaned, cursing his friend in his mind. He wouldn't be in this position if he didn't agree to that idiot.
"So? Wanna give me an answer now or should I wait?"
"Listen, mister-"
"It's Krist, officer Krist Perawat."
Singto clenched his jaw, letting out a frustrated sigh.
"You can't escape me, baby. You're dealing with a cop, remember that. And I don't know why you're doing this but I know you do have a reason for it.
I might be using my job to let you go, but trust me, you don't know how much I've fallen for you," Krist smiled, showing his dimples.
He was thankful that they were deep inside the alley and other officers haven't come in to check on him. He could still hear the siren of the police car.
"Make it fast baby, we have no time."
Singto glared at the man. Feeling a look of great bitterness swept across his face.
Anger curled hot and unstoppable in his gut, like a blazing inferno that wanted to burn him from the inside out. He balled his fingers to a fist, wanting to punch away the smirk on Officer Krist's face.
"It's your choice, baby. Your future is in your hands."
Krist took out the walkie-talkie in his waist when he heard the other officer's voice through it.
Singto bit his lips, staring into the eyes of the man who was daring him to give an answer.
