Explanation Of Physical Appearance

Gratuita, or "Grady" as she sometimes calls herself, has dark brown eyes and shoulder-length brown hair that is dyed a dark pink at the ends. She wears her hair both up and down. When it is down, it reaches down her back somewhat, and the ends curl a little. The longer strands in the back are also dyed pink. When she has it up, she styles it into a low bun. At school, she wears the Kodo Academy uniform, and all of the patches and badges that correspond with her classes. Outside of school, she wears tank tops and a pair of pants.

During marching competitions, she wears the marching uniform for people who are playing instruments. This is the uniform worn by everyone except for 4 people within the Kodo Academy Marching Band and Color Guard.

For concerts, Gratuita wears a long black dress with a red brooch in the shape of a flower, specifically a carnation.

For the annual tradition known as the Band Prom, Gratuita wears a long, red dress when attending.

Explanation Of Personality

Gratuita is a kind and loving girl. She is calm and collected during band rehearsals, but outside, she worries about things like how she'll do in her classes. She's also a bit scatterbrained, and doubts herself sometimes because she sometimes feels like she's a bit too weird and cringy. Besides that, she's very free-spirited and strong-willed.

She also enjoys art, as well as science and botany. She cares very much about the environment.

Background

Gratuita was spawned to Blue Opal, a gem, and Fiona, a mortal. She grew up in a good environment, and her parents supported her goals. She liked to doodle in notebooks and honk into the alto saxophone Fiona owned. She liked to chat with her classmates about random stuff from preschool to 5th grade.

In 6th grade, she started doing band, and she met Hinotori. They talked to each other the most in band class and at the lunch table. They also spent a lot of time together outside of school. Eventually, Hinotori and Gratuita realized they had rather strong feelings for each other. They didn't know how to define their feelings, however, although Gratuita knew she wasn't interested in Hino romantically. During their sophomore year, Hinotori took Gratuita out to band prom, and they went as each other's plus one. They talked a lot about their future together to decide what their relationship was like and work everything out. 

Skills

She plays the alto saxophone for marching band season and Jazz Band, and the euphonium for concert band season.

Gratuita is okay at dancing, which is why she signed up for dance class.

She also is good at drawing, and loves to draw with Hinotori. The two are awesome drawing buddies. Gratuita has a green thumb, and works well with any type of plant. From the most delicate orchid to the most resistant succulent, she's very skilled when it comes to taking care of foliage.

Relationships With Other Characters

Gratuita is very close with Hinotori. They met in beginning band when they had a period of it together in 6th grade. She picks up signs of Hinotori overworking themself and encourages them to get some rest. Just before the band performs, she gives them encouraging words. Hinotori gets quite self-conscious before they perform, so Gratuita's words give them an instant boost of confidence. They often like to go to places like the public library or to one of their houses to hang out after school. They enjoy making small talk and catching up with each other, as well as sharing how they're feeling.

Gratuita takes a liking to Hinotori's high intelligence and odd sense of humor. Hinotori admires Gratuita's kindness, as well as the fact that she's always there for them, and she's easy to open up to. Grady does not like how self-depreciative Hinotori is, and she tries to help them feel better about themself. Hinotori isn't fond of Gratuita's self-doubt. In turn, they help her feel more confident about her abilities.

Gratuita gets along with her two younger brothers, Gale and Giovanni.
