The Sweet Spot

Miranda scampered up the trail like a mountain goat. "Did you bring the fifty?"

Josh wiped from sweat from his eyes with his free hand and told his wife, "Yes, I brought the fifty millimeter lens and the 105. Can you slow down?"

"We need to be on the ridge before the sun starts to set. Can't you hurry up?"

"Why don't you go on ahead? Pick a good location. I'll be there when I get there." Josh shifted the heavy gear bag to his other shoulder. Not for the first time, he wondered why he allowed Miranda to involve him in her cockamamie schemes.

When Josh finally reached the summit, he found his wife pacing the ridge. "The sun will go down over there. I'll be here and I want you..."

"I know how to shoot a sunset, Miranda." He sat on a rock and unpacked his kit. He had to admit that it was the perfect spot. The view was amazing, and the distant hills and deep valleys would frame the setting sun perfectly. His major regret was that his wife was going to be in the pictures.

He took a couple of test shots, adjusted the reflectors, and set up the fill flash to light Miranda without a harsh glare. "Give me a pose," he told her.

Miranda pranced back and forth on the ridge, tossing her long hair and spinning.

"Miranda, you gotta stay in this area for the best light."

They practiced a bit more as the sun dropped towards the horizon.

"Don't screw this up," she told Josh. "I need the ratings."

Miranda was a social media contributor. She had recently created her own channel and was struggling to get her numbers up. With higher numbers came fame and recognition. This photo shoot was just one in a series of antics she had dragged her husband into.

Josh was beginning to feel that her fans were more important to her than he was.

Low in the sky, the sun was a big orange ball. Josh went to work. "Move left. Now swing your head. Jump. Again. This time bring your heels up." He worked his magic as the sky around them took on amazing hues. Josh estimated he had two or three minutes of good light left. It was time.

"You are out of the sweet spot. Take a step back. Another."

Miranda disappeared from his view finder.

Josh continued to shoot, bracketing his exposures and working the light. Finally he sighed, satisfied with what he had captured.

He carefully placed his camera on the ground and pulled out his cell phone.

"Hello, you gotta help us. Omigod, my wife just fell off a cliff."
