Emma Matthews
Her heels could be heard clacking against the floor from down the hallway and the small group of friends cringed as the noise reached their ears. Emma Matthews, one of Goodes popular girls, power walked down the hall to the group of friends with a sour look on her face. She put on a glare as she stopped beside the group and cleared her throat, placing her hands on her hips. "Where is he?" She asked.
"Where is who?" A boy about six feet tall and brown hair looked down at her with bright green eyes.
Emma rolled her blue eyes. "Percy Jackson."
"Oh, him." A girl around her height with brown curly hair nodded.
"Well?" Emma flipped her black hair over her shoulder. "Where is he?"
Another girl, a little shorter than Emma, shrugged. "We don't know."
"Oh, please." She waved her hand in the air. "He's your guy's friend."
The boy from before sighed. "Fine. We do know where he is but why do you want to know?"
She inspected her perfectly manicured nails. "Hm?" She looked up. "Oh! I have to ask him a question."
"And what would that be?" A boy with glasses asked her.
Emma shifted her glare to his and he returned it. "Fine. I'm asking him to be my boyfriend."
The group of friends laughed. Some nervously and some just because apparently what Emma had said sounded funny. "Oh, good one!" The girl with curly blonde hair from before gasped.
Emma stomped her foot in frustration. "I'm serious!"
The laughter stopped and the boy who was speaking earlier- Eric- she thinks it was, laughed nervously. "Not a good Idea, Emma."
"Why not?" Emma glared.
"Well, you see, Percy has a girlfriend of two years." The curly brown hair girl- Hope- she believed informed her.
Emma shrugged. "Since when has a girlfriend stopped me?"
"No, you don't understand," Ryder, the boy with glasses, said.
"What do I not understand?" Emma gritted her teeth.
The shorter girl, Olivia, gave an anxious chuckle. "Percy's girlfriend is very protective of him and last time a girl tried to get with him, that girl left the building with a black eye."
"Uh, so?" Emma raised an eyebrow.
"And he loves his girlfriend, a lot." Eric told her.
Emma snorted. "Yeah right. Now, where is he again?"
Eric sighed. "Pool."
Emma flashed them a dazzling white smile that made most teenage boys swoon. "Thanks!" She turned around and put back on her straight face, walking through the school to the pool area. Some say it almost looked like she was model or cat walking.
She rounded the corner, saw the two blue double doors that lead to the pool, and she smiled. She placed her hand on the door knob and was about to walk in when she looked through the window on the door and froze. Percy and this girl stood a few feet away from the pool. Emma narrowed her eyes at the curly blonde. This must be Percy's girlfriend, She thought. And who wears a sweatshirt and sweatpants around their boyfriend?
Shaking her head, Emma focused back on the couple themselves. The girl smiled up at Percy and slipped her two pointer fingers through his belt loops of his jeans, pulling him closer. Emma leaned in closer, trying to catch what they were saying. Fortunately, she did.
"Oh, come on," She girl said, laughing a little bit.
"Nope," Percy replied, smiling down at her and Emma felt her heart leap.
She rolled her eyes. "We haven't gone out in forever!"
"I can't skip practice." Percy shrugged.
The girl looked up at Percy and bit her lip, moving her arms so she moved Percy from side to side. "Please? For me?"
Percy looked away but then sighed, defeated. "Fine." He pecked her forehead. "This Friday."
"Italian restaurant?" she asked, moving her arms around his neck.
Percy wrapped his arms around her waist. "Sure. Anywhere you want to go."
They were leaning in to kiss and Emma decided that was a good time to barge in. She slammed the door open causing the couple to jump apart. "Percy!" Emma called and stood next to them.
"Uh, yes?" Percy asked, looking confused.
Emma twirled her hair around her finger. "I'm Emma."
"Hi, Emma." Percy smiled.
"And you are?" Emma spun around and asked the blonde girl.
"Annabeth Chase." She rested her grey eyes on Emma. "Percy's girlfriend."
Emma nodded and turned back to Percy. "I've got a question for you."
"What is it?" He asked, looking down at her questionably.
Emma placed her hand on his shoulder. "I like you so what do you say? You and me? Friday night."
Percy chuckled nervously and pushed her hand off his shoulder lightly. "Look, Emma, you seem like a nice girl but I have a girlfriend."
She glanced behind her at Annabeth who nodded with crossed arms. "Oh, her?"
"Yeah." Percy nodded.
"Well, my offer still stands after you and..Annabelle, was it? Break up." Emma said, readjusting her backpack strap on her shoulder.
"Annabeth." She gritted her teeth.
Percy smiled, squeezing Annabeth's hand to calm her. "Sorry, but that's not happening."
"Suit yourself." Emma shrugged, gave Annabeth a glare, and walked towards the door. As she walked out of the pool area she saw Annabeth press her lips to Percy's through the corner of her eye.
Emma rolled her eyes but she couldn't wait for tomorrow which was Thursday. Annabeth should watch he back, who knows who will try to steal her boyfriend in the near future? All Emma needs is a plan.
------
Emma walked into school early on Thursday morning and switched out her school supplies at her locker. She was just closing it when she heard someone clear their throat.
"Excuse me?" A voice said from behind her.
Emma turned around and saw a girl with short blonde hair and blue eyes. "I'm new here and I can't find my first class."
"Oh, do you need help?" Emma asked, shouldering her backpack.
The girl smiled. "That would be great, thanks."
"Yeah, no problem," Emma said and started walking. "What's your name?"
"Ally. You?" Ally asked, playing with the sleeve of her black sweatshirt.
"Emma," She replied. "What room is your first class in?"
"212."
"Oh, perfect, that's mine too."
Ally laughed. "Really? How ironic." She opened her mouth but her words died in her throat as he eyes stared at something across the hall.
"Ally?" Emma waved her hand over Ally's eyes.
Ally managed to get words out of her mouth. "Who is that?" She pointed to...Percy leaning against his locker.
"That's P-" Emma smirked as she thought of a plan. "That's my boyfriend, Percy."
"Ooo, you scored a good one Emma." Ally nodded.
Emma laughed quietly. "Yeah, I did."
Ally frowned, noticing Emma's mood change. "Hey, what's wrong?"
"Well, I think he's trying- ah never mind." She waved it off. "It doesn't matter."
Ally placed a hand on her shoulder. "Well if it's bothering you than it does matter."
Emma shrugged. "I just don't want to tell you my problem on your first day."
Ally shook her head. "No, go ahead. I don't mind."
"Um, okay." She took a deep breath and looked at Percy with saddened eyes, her acting skills paying off. "I think he's trying to or is cheating on me."
Ally gasped. "That's horrible!"
"Yeah, I know," Emma said, sniffling a bit.
"B-but why would you think that?" Ally asked. "There's got to be a reason."
Emma sighed. "He's been really distant lately because he's been hanging around with-"
"With who?" Ally asked, looking like she was getting ready to snap whoever was causing Emma this "pain" to pieces.
"With her." Emma pointed to Annabeth who smiled and leaned across the locker in front of Percy. "Annabeth Chase."
"Oh." Ally lowered her voice. "I'm so sorry. You know, if he can't see how great you are, is he even worth it?"
Emma smiled and hugged Ally. "You're going to be a great friend." She pulled away. "And yes, he is worth it. We've been dating for-" She thought of how long Percy and Annabeth have been dating for. "Two years!"
"Two years?" Ally gasped.
"Yeah." Emma's eyes filled with "real" tears.
Ally glanced at Percy. "Is there anything I can do for you?"
Emma nodded. "He said he's going to Maria's Italian Ristorante with a group of friends but I don't know if that's true." She sighed. "Do you mind going there on Friday night and, um, spying on Percy for me?"
"Of course!" Ally exclaimed. "I'll bring my brother out for pasta and if I see Percy and Annabeth do anything romantic then I'll call you right away."
"Thank you so much." Emma smiled. "Now, come on, let's get to class."
------
After school Emma caught up with Percy in the hallway after making sure Annabeth wasn't around and used her acting skills to bring tears to her eyes. "Percy!"
He turned around. "Hey, Emma." He noticed the tears in her eyes. "What's wrong?"
"Well, my ex boyfriend didn't treat me well and he knows I'm single and is trying to find me so he can use me." She took a deep breath. "Can you pretend to be my boyfriend for a couple minutes? I promise I won't do anything to make you uncomfortable and it won't mean anything, I just need help."
Percy, being oblivious, said yes. "Sure."
"Thank you." She slipped her hand into his.
"Oh, here he comes." She had her cousin, Tod, pretend to be her ex boyfriend. It was all part of her plan.
"Emma!" He called from down the hallway. "I won't hurt you! I just want to... be with you!"
Percy frowned. "Hey! Leave her alone!"
Tod stopped in front of him and Emma. "Now who might you be?"
"He's my boyfriend." Emma quickly said, kissing Percy's cheek.
Tod shrugged. "Oh, okay, call me when you're single again." Then he walked out the door.
Emma sighed in relief. "Thanks."
"Yeah, uh, no problem." Percy said and felt Emma kiss his cheek one more time before walking out the door. "Weird."
-----
"Remember, call me right away," Emma said into her phone.
"Yes, I know." Ally's muffled voice assured her.
"Okay, great." Emma smiled. "Thanks again. This makes me feel so much better."
"Yeah, no problem!" Ally exclaimed. "My brother's ready to go so keep your ringer on."
"Will do. Thanks!"
"Yup." Then the line went dead.
-----
Ally parked her car in the parking lot, her brother, Max, and her got out of the car, and walked inside the restaurant. Right as they stepped in a waitress appeared in front of them. "Hello! Welcome, how may I help you?"
"Table for two please." Ally smiled.
"Right this way, Miss." The waitress lead them to a booth. "Here you go. Would you like to order drinks right away or would you like to look at our options first?"
"Look at the options." Ally sat down across from her brother.
The waitress nodded. "Alright, I'll be back in a couple minutes." She walked away and Ally looked around at the other people who were dining inside. She suddenly felt like she should've dressed nicer.
Max shook his head from across her. "There's no way that waitresses are that nice when they're not working."
Ally laughed.
After they had gotten their drinks, Ally heard the door open. Her eyes shifted over to the entrance and held in a gasp as Percy and Annabeth entered the restaurant, hand in hand. Ally reached for her phone when she paused. She'll wait a little bit and see if they do anything else so she sat back and watched and listened.
"Hello, welcome, how may I help you?" A different waitress asked.
Percy smiled and nodded towards Annabeth. "Table for two, please."
"Right this way." The waitress lead them to the table next to Ally's which was perfect and placed to menus on the table. "Would you guys like to order drinks?"
"I'll take a sparkling water," Annabeth told the waitress.
"..Okay." She wrote it down on a notepad and switched her attention to Percy. "And you?"
"A coke, thanks." Percy ordered.
"Yup. I'll be right back with those." She clicked her pen and turned, walking away.
Ally took in the two teenagers and now she really felt like her and Max should've dressed up more. Percy wore a white button up shirt with the sleeves folded up and black pants with fancy shoes while Annabeth wore light blue jean shorts and tucked in, a long sleeve, see through blouse with brown sandals. The whole outfit made her skin seem even more tan then it already was. Also, Percy's hair was a mess as always but Annabeth's curls tumbled across her shoulders while some curls were pinned back.
Ally looked down at her jeans and sweatshirt and winced. Yikes. What was she thinking? She shook her head and started to watch Percy and Annabeth again.
"Thanks, Percy." Annabeth smiled. "It means a lot."
"Oh, you know you begged me to take you out on a date." Percy laughed quietly, reaching over and placing a stray curl behind her ear.
"Oh shut up." Annabeth rolled her eyes and pushed his hand away with a laugh.
Percy shrugged. "Kind of glad I skipped practice for this though."
"Why?" Annabeth asked, smiling like she already knew the answer.
"Because I get to spend time with you," Percy answered. "I feel like we don't do this very often."
"Well, we can't because of, well, you know." Annabeth reached across the table and laced their fingers together which caused Ally to tighten her hand around her phone.
"Excuse me?" Ally tore her eyes away from Percy and Annabeth to see the waiter looking at her. "What would you like?"
"Oh, the chicken alfredo." The waitress nodded, jotting it down. "Thanks."
"Yup, I'll be back in a bit with your guy's food." She stuffed the notepad in her apron and walked away.
Ally must have missed a whole conversation because when she turned back to Percy and Annabeth she was so close to calling Emma.
Annabeth was leaning across the table, staring at Percy in a not so friendship way, and if you looked under the table you could see that she was trailing her left foot up and down the side of Percy's right calf.
"We could just leave the restaurant and go back to your car." Her eyes shifted down to his lips.
"Nah, I want my pasta." Percy shook his head.
Annabeth bit her lip. "Then at least kiss me right now." Percy raised his eyebrows. "Not to make out. Just a small kiss."
Percy smiled and leaned in, pressing his lips to hers, he smiled into it which showed he was enjoying it.
Ally gasped and unlocked her phone, scrolling through her contacts, pressing on Emma's name. It rang three times before she picked up. "Emma!"
"Hey, Ally," Emma said. "How's it going?"
Ally laughed nervously. "Did Percy ever smile when he kissed you?"
"Uh, not recently no," Emma replied. "Why?"
"Well, Percy and Annabeth- uh- she asked him to kiss her and he, well, did. He's a;so smiling into the kiss."
Emma sighed sadly. "I knew it. I'll be there soon."
"Okay, I'm so sorry, Emma." Ally said.
"It's fine." Emma sniffed. "Bye."
"See ya." The line went dead.
About ten minutes later, when Percy and Annabeth got their food and were enjoying their pasta, the door burst open and Emma stormed inside, her mascara smudged. She made eye contact with Ally who pointed to the table next to her where Percy and Annabeth were sitting. She nodded and made her way over.
"I can't believe you!" Emma shouted at Percy.
Percy looked up and his eyes widened. "Emma? What are you doing here?"
Emma held up her finger. "No! The question is, what are you doing here with her?" She pointed at Annabeth.
"She's-"
Emma held up a hand. "I won't hear of it! You said you ended it with her."
Ally frowned at that.
Percy opened his mouth to speak but Annabeth got to it first. "What do you mean he said he ended it with me?"
Emma turned to Annabeth and glared. "After the incident in the pool Percy came up to me in biology and said he had feelings for me and that he ended it with you." Emma turned back to Percy. "You cheater!"
"What-" Percy started.
"Why would you cheat on me, Percy?" Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"I-"
Annabeth looked at Percy. "Is this true?"
Percy was so confused he was lost for words and just stared at Annabeth with a blank expression. Being oblivious, he didn't know what was going on, what it means, or why it's happening. So being the Seaweed Brain he is, he decided to stutter and his cheeks turned pink and he probably looked guilty too. "I didn't mean to- I don't- she told- what?"
Annabeth narrowed her eyes. "Did you have any physical contact with her after the pool incident?" He shook his head not look at her.
"Look into my eyes!"
Percy gulped. "I didn't- she said it didn't mean- I don't-huh?"
Annabeth's eyes were wide and she nodded slowly, standing up. "I see." She picked up her back and stood next to the table and Emma slid into the spot where Annabeth was sitting a few seconds ago. "You know, after two years of dating and five years of friendship, I would have never expected this from you." Then Annabeth left the restaurant.
Percy stared blankly at the table and Ally could see tears pooling in his green eyes. He blinked and a couple rolled down his cheeks, he sniffed, and placed his face in his hands. He wiped his eyes and Percy shakily looked up at Emma across the table. "You said you needed help."
"Maybe I did." Emma shrugged. "Maybe I didn't."
Ally frowned and stood, telling her brother to stay put. Ally stood beside the table and glanced at Percy who was cursing himself out and seemed to be..crying. "Emma?"
"Yes?" Emma glanced up at her.
"If Percy was cheating on you." She pointed to Percy then Emma. "Then why did he react like this and why did Annabeth storm out?"
Emma laughed nervously and twirled her hair around her finger. "Um, well, you see-"
Ally's attention switched to Percy as he shakily pointed a finger at Emma. "Y-you said it wouldn't mean anything!"
"Did I?" Emma looked up, thinking. "Maybe I did."
Percy glared. "This would have never happened if you didn't trick me!"
Ally held her hands up. "Wait, what?" She turned her gaze to Emma. "You tricked him?"
Percy nodded. "Yeah, she told me that her "ex boyfriend" was trying to get together with her so she had me pretend to be her boyfriend but it was all a set up for this!"
Ally looked back at Emma, hurt.
"Emma...why?" She shook her head, eyes closed, before opening them again. "How could you-why would you do something like that?"
"I wanted Percy," Emma told her.
"But, I'm assuming that he wasn't trying to cheat on you with Annabeth but you were trying to make him cheat on her with you?" Ally asked.
"That's exactly what she was doing." Percy gritted his teeth.
Emma nodded. "That was exactly what I was doing."
Ally shook her head. "That's just sick, Emma." Ally was beyond mad and disappointed. "You made me think that you were being cheated on. You made me feel bad for you. You used me!"
"I did what I had to!" Emma glared.
"Oh shut up!" Ally threw back. "There's plenty of other guys in that school!"
Emma stood up. "But-"
Ally held her hand up. "I don't want to hear about it and don't talk to me again." Ally turned to Percy. "I'm thinking you were Annabeth's ride?"
"Yeah." He stood, setting $30 down on the table and grabbing his car keys.
"Then she's probably still out there." Ally gestured outside where the sun was setting a dark orange glow upon the restaurant.
"Maybe." Percy sighed and ran his hand through his already messy black hair.
Ally shook her head. "Go get your girl back. I'll take care of Emma."
"Okay, thanks, uh-" Percy said.
"Ally."
"Thanks, Ally." Percy smiled and ran outside of the building.
-----
Percy looked around urgently for Annabeth and spotted her sitting on the sidewalk, her back leaning against the brick wall of the building they were just inside. He silently walked walked over to her and leaned against the wall. "What are you still doing here?"
Annabeth huffed and stood up, crossing her arms. "What? You want me to leave so you can be with your new girlfriend?"
Percy shook his head. "No, she's not my girlfriend."
"Well it sounds like it." Annabeth glared into his eyes.
Percy sighed. "Will you let me explain?"
"It better be a good explanation," Annabeth grumbled.
Percy chuckled. "Okay, so yesterday she said she had a crazy ex boyfriend who was trying to get back together with her just to use her. She asked me to pretend to be her boyfriend just so her ex boyfriend could see that she was taken and leave her alone. I agreed because she promised that it wouldn't mean anything but it was all a set up so she could come here and blow up at me in front of you."
Annabeth's eyes widened. "Huh?"
"Very intelligent answer for a daughter of the wisdom goddess." He joked.
"No, no, you said that really fast," Annabeth said, leaning against the wall.
"Oh!" Percy mentally facepalmed. "So basically she tricked me into being her "boyfriend" so she could get rid of her "ex boyfriend" and she promised it wouldn't mean anything so that's why agreed." He glanced at her. "I was just trying to help."
Annabeth shook her head, a smile pulling at her lips, and wrapped her arms around his neck. "You oblivious idiot."
"So, are we back together?" Percy's cheeks colored.
Annabeth laughed and punched his shoulder lightly before wrapping her arm back around him. She ran her hand through his hair and leaned her head against his chest. "I never broke up with you."
He cleared his throat. "Oh yeah."
Annabeth moved her head to look into his eyes lovingly. "Oh, I love you, Seaweed Brain."
"Even though I'm am idiot?" Percy gave her a lopsided smile that she fell in love with over the years.
"You may be an idiot but you're my idiot." She smiled as Percy placed his hands on her hips and pulled her closer to him so they were flush against each other.
"I love you, too." Percy leaned his forehead against hers.
"That's good." She pressed her lips to his and he moved one of his hands to bury in her hair.
After a minute or two Percy pulled away and smirked. "Earlier you said something about going back to my car?"
Annabeth smiled. "Yeah.."
"Why don't we go to the car."
She pointed at him as he pulled her to the parking lot. "Now that's a good idea."
They hopped into the car and Percy put the keys in the ignition but didn't turn the car on. He turned to Annabeth and she leaned over the console and crashed her lips against his. Percy tilted his head, deepening the kiss, and buried his hand in her hair. She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling herself closer to him. They both smiled into the kiss as it deepened.
Well, they now know that nothing is strong enough to break them apart. Gods and mortals couldn't. They'd be fine as long as they're together.
The End
