Week Six. #20.
A postman's anthem
With each step I wonder what a letter holds,
inside stiff envelopes, within neat folds.
Perhaps, the perennial worries of a mother,
understood and responded only by another;
Racy bites and poems between old lovers,
listing a saga of voyages under covers;
Stories strung by an imagination so wild,
undoubtedly, authored by a lonesome child;
The pangs of a marine, on-duty off-shore,
splitting time between family and corps.
Or maybe, it carries an important report,
a bill, a ticket, an order from highcourt,
a call for openings, a resignation letter,
or one last attempt from a tired go-getter!
And it can be such that it is none of these -
just an empty sheet, a prank if they please.
Yet, every day, sickness, disaster or sleet,
we will smile, and make the delivery upbeat.
For a lost letter is not only 'paper misplaced',
it is trust displaced, our honor disgraced.
And within these letters, some send treasure,
(as words of love have value beyond measure)
some fight a cause, and some build a world,
while some send tear stains from memories unfurled
