Week Nine. #15: Kahelia.
Title of the Poem: An Old Folklore: A Siren and Her Lover
They said he was mad
His brain went wild in search of the sea
His body weathered under the elements
Arms strong clutched around oars that pushed to him to see.
He roamed under street lamps
Walked from cobblestone to sand to hear the siren's song
They say he was enchanted
Bewitched by sweet notes under the moon
Thus, fell in love with woman that lived in the sea.
So every fortnight under the silver moon
He travelled afar in his boat to hear the sweet tidings of his lover notes
When he came back rowing in the blazing sun
His face contorted in pain
For he was departed from his lover again.
T'was that one stormy night when he cried for the Gods to make him immortal
So he and his siren shall never be apart
But the Gods were not pleased for he had smite their name
Unbalancing the mortal world for his love for her.
So mad was he, that betrayed the rules set down
Rowed into the sea under black skies
His lover's tail caressed and her tears melted his eyes
Her beauty forever captured his heart.
But the Gods' looked down from high above
Watching the two unware as they enjoyed the secrets of their love
Their defiance angered the Gods' raging storm
Creating terror for the creatures above and below.
Some say it was she that killed him
With her golden comb
Pierced his agonized heart
So his soul will be forever immortalized for her alone
But others say it was Gods that killed him
For the courage and heart to betray their decree.
So every fortnight on this lonely island
We sing the siren's song in remembrance of her lover
But sometimes if you listen closely you could her cry
And on every stormy night as the wretched waves crashes unto land
You can see under black skies a boat rowing out into the night.
