RIVER

a man on a boat
sailed down the river

the river of lost dreams

the river where all the late night hopes,
the afternoon daydreams,
and the 11:11 wishes
drifted to

every wish,
every dream,
every hope,
winded up on this river
and stayed there forever;
they became one with it

legend says that this river,
the river of lost dreams,
had the power to give one happiness
if they took drank some of the water

and that was why this man,
this old
depressed
lonely
man
was sailing down the river
on a tattered boat
at dusk

he expected
this tattered boat
that he'd found
in his dirty
grimy
cobweb filled
garage
to sail him all the way down the river,
and back to whence he came

and it almost did

almost

he was taking a sip of the river's water,
letting the cold
magical
liquid ooze down his throat
when all of a sudden
he felt
a cold substance touch
his foot

he didn't mind it at first,
thinking he had spilled some of the water
he was drinking

so he continued to drink,
taking little handfuls 
of this mystical water

until he heard the trickling of water

perhaps there's a waterfall nearby,
he thought

so he carried on drinking this water

though,
reader,
this is where he made a mistake

he should've noticed that there was water
coming inside the boat
from one hole on the bottom of it

he should've noticed that this water
was rising
higher and higher

he should've noticed that he had begun
to sink

sink into the river,
the river of lost dreams

the man realized his predicament
and let himself sink

he had nothing left to live for;
his wife had died last year,
they didn't have any children,
and he had retired several years ago

he'd come to the river
in hopes of recreating that spark
and that yearn to live

but alas,
he'd only found a pitiful way
to end his life

so the man,
this old
depressed
lonely
man
sank to the bottom
of the river of dreams
with a large smile on his face,
feeling an immense feeling of joy

for at least,
he died a happy man
