First Letters & Chapter
"Hi Phillip.
I'm Dan.
You probably don't know who I am. In some ways you do, in some ways you don't.
I guess you will be my friend.
Someone that I can write to.
My doctor said that I should start writing a diary, but I didn't see any meaning in that, so after just some days I stopped. She noticed, and now I'm here writing to you.
Why did I pick you? Well. I like the name Philip. And "Lester". It sounded nice and special. Not a boring family name, like mine. "Howell", boring and usual.
I've been here a month. Maybe two. I don't count anymore. I just want to get out. I get bored just sitting here on a bed, in a hospital where every single child is mental. I guess I am too.
My mum and dad will be here soon. We'll be celebrating my Birthday. I miss them. But I hate my Birthday.
Best wishes and cat whiskers,
Dan"
Dan stood up and put the letter on the bedside table. His doctor would pick it up when he came to talk to his parents. He sat down on his bed, looking at the plain hospital room. Picking up the comics he had read so many times & now reading them again.
"I hate this place", he said and started reading. After a while he got bored. You're reading the Avengers, Dan! You don't get bored by that!
Well. Today he did.
Dan looked at the door.
"I hate my birthday", he said to no one. Because that's when everything has to be perfect - but I'm not.
Suddenly Dan heard someone knock on the door.
"Come in!", he mumbled. Soon his parents walked in - smiling like everything was okay. But Dan wasn't, and he'd never been.
"Hi Honey! I missed you so much, sweetie! It's so lonely at home when you're not there", his Mum said. Dan hugged her tightly.
"I missed you too", he said, meaning every word. They pulled away and he hugged his Dad.
"Hi Dad", he said.
"You okay?", his Dad said.
"Yeah. Mostly", Dan lied. They pulled away and Dan sat down on the uncomfortable hospital bed.
His parents laid his birthday presents in front of him.
"Th-thanks, Mum, Dad, but you didn't need to...", Dan said.
"We wanted to, because we love you. And we want you to feel better, and since your brother...", his mother said. Dan looked away.
"Stop", he said. "He's not alive. And it's my fault. It is my fault that he died, isn't it?", Dan said, shaking.
"Of course it isn't, darling", Dan's Mum said.
"I told you to not mention it!", Dan saw his Dad pouting to his Mum.
Suddenly dr. Margaret came in. Dan looked at her, panicking. She was the only one he trusted in here.
"Amelia, will you please let your hands of your son?", she said. Dan's Mum nodded.
Dan immediately stood up and took the letter to Phil from his bedside table and gave it to her.
"It's too my pen pal", he said.
"Thank you, Dan", she said, taking it.
"I'm sorry Mum & Dad", Dan said.
"Oh, sweetie. It's okay. We get that you feel like that", his Mum said. His Dad never said very much. Dan sat down in the window and looked out over the beautiful view and faded away into his thoughts.
I just want to get out.
A week later Dan woke up after a good sleep. As he reached for his book he saw a letter on the desk. His eyes lit up just seeing it. He ran to the desk and ripped it up. He started reading the letter Philip had written with a sharpie pen.
"Hi Dan!
You can call me Phil.
I'm sorry to say to you that I don't think I know what I'm doing. I don't think I've said that I wanted to be a pen pal that people could talk to. It must've been a misunderstanding.
But it's okay. I like to write. And help others. So, you can still write to me - and of course, I will answer.
Let me tell you about myself.
My name's Philip Lester, but you can call me Phil. Philip sounds too formal.
I am 22. I live in Manchester. I like to watch anime and be on the Internet.
What about you?
Why do you hate your Birthday so much? It's okay if you don't want to talk about it. Not everyone can like their Birthday.
And what's with the cat whiskers? I like cats. They're cute and squishy and fluffy and stuff.
Best wishes and cat whiskers,
Your friend Phil
PS. You're not mental. "
