Chapter XL: Assume

Three days had passed since Tuff brought news of the upcoming attack, and preparations were still underway. The camp wall was nearly done, and the dens were blocked off nicely, with a small space for us to walk through that would be covered once the battle began. The pups were still training, but they had the basic moves down. Every wolf was well-versed in basic medicine by now, and many were training to touch up their skills.

Screams echoed from inside the camp wall. I pushed myself harder, running and running and running. But I was too late, no matter how fast I ran and how hard I tried.
It was inevitable.
"Ember!" I screamed, racing down the hill to his side. "Ember!"
He didn't move.
A short, piercing shriek cut through the silence.
"The pups!" I abandoned Ember and hopped over the bodies, skidding to a halt in the clearing, where a large tawny wolf stood over Reed's stilled corpse.
"Noooo!"
The wolf turned around.
I choked. "F-f-"
