Chapter 13 - Pearl and Steven
Hello! This wasn't exactly... requested, but more of suggested by MyOnlySilence. Pearl and Steven are in the spotlight, with other characters, of course, but pretty much everyone except you lol.
----------------------------------------
After you left Steven's place, you rushed home in hope that your Mum wasn't angry at you, just to find that she was out somewhere.
Steven stretched lazily and collapsed onto his comfortable bed in his pyjamas. With the little energy he had left, he pulled the link duvet over him and tried to get to sleep.
And, like every night, he felt he was being watched.
"We can't play now right now, Lion. Go to sleep." He spoke through his yawn and waved his hand to shoo Lion away.
"Steven. I need to talk to you about something." It took him a while to comprehend that it wasn't Lion talking, but it was actually Pearl. It's hard trying to function when your sleepy.
Steven rubbed his eyes and sat up in bed. After yet another yawn, he broke the silence.
"What is it, Pearl?" Steven asked, slightly grumpy from the lack of sleep he was receiving.
"Well, Steven, we need to talk about (Y/N)..." Pearl trailed off. It went from whispering to murmuring to nothing.
"What about her? Pearl? Are you okay, Pearl?" Steven sat forwards, a concerned expression amongst is features.
Pearl looked down and pressed her hands to her face. A flustered blue covered her cheeks and a similar colour dropped from her eyes. Steven quickly clambered towards her and engulfed her skaing body in a hug. All that could be heard was Pearl's soft sobs. They eventually died down and Steven let go, looking at her in the eye, demanding an answer for her sudden sadness.
She spoke.
"Steven. How do humans work?" Steven was dumbfounded. It was hard to come up with some sort of explanation about everything discovered about humans. He was about to begin but Pearl asked another question.
"More specifically, how do they love?" Steven was shocked at this outburst and especially the peculiar but thought-provoking idea.
"Well... when two humans love each other, it's torture..? That's what Dad says, anyway." The boy started, not knowing how to explain it.
"Greg? Of course, he has experience of loving another species. What else has he told you?" Pearl sniffed again, fiddling with the duvet covers.
"Well he mostly talks about him and Mom. He says that you have this kind of feeling or a sensation where you just know you're in love with that person. And that you'd do anything for them, no matter what." Pearl nodded at his extended reply.
"But..." Steven continued. "I think love is what you make it and what you believe it is. It can be platonic or you could get married! It just depends on who you are." He smiled at Pearl who eventually smiled back and they exchanged a hug.
"When did you become so smart?" Pearl asked Steven, ruffling his hair.
"Ever since I met Connie." He realised what he had said and started blushing but Pearl was already excited. She wore her "this-is-so-precious-and-beautiful-and-I-am-so-proud-of-you" face.
"A-Anyway, maybe you should talk to Garnet. Actually, if it's cross-species, then Dad might have some advice!" Steven suggested. Pearl took Greg's past into account and how it resulted in Steven. Not that she was looking for that kind of thing, but more of the commitment and sacrifice in their relationship.
Pearl longed for that. It was already available but she wanted all of it from the person she thinks she loves.
No.
She knows she loves.
